Ahava Afghan Hounds Kept my money and sold dog to someone else

Here is the timeline of what happened to me when trying to buy my first puppy.
I contacted the seller and asked for pictures. Talked on the phone. She seemed nice. Said puppy is Show quality for $800 and flight would be around $345.
I fell in love with puppy and told her I wanted him. She sent me unsigned contract stating he was pet quality (over phone said show quality). RED FLAG
She then told me if I want him for show I have to pay $1000 RED FLAG ...why did I continue after this?
I told her I wanted the show quality puppy for $800 as she originally stated. Later she agreed. I sent her $1200 by wire and signed contract.
She said she took puppy to airport, but because she bought the wrong size crate they wouldn't ship. She told me she we would have to use the largest kennel #700 and it cost $185. I called the airline to make reservations and they said it would cost over $800 for the ticket. I called and told her I couldn't pay that much for the airline flight...she said no problem she would refund my money. She also said he would probably fit in a #500 kennel but she couldn't find one.
That night I called all airlines and found a flight for about $600 and they had all sized crates for $100! I sent her an email stating I might re consider and get him...she never replied. I called. No reply. I emailed. No reply. I made the airline reservations and since I couldn't reach her I called her husband the next morning. He said they couldn't take the dog to the airport. I asked him to have her call me. She didn't. I sent more emails. No response.
Now I'm getting real nervous. They have my money. They have the puppy. They will not answer phone at work or at home. ..will not respond to emails. RED FLAG
I finally called the woman who she used as a reference. Anne was nice, and succeeded in getting Cherie to write to me. Cherie stated we can give this another try...then a half hour later wrote and said someone inquired about the puppy and she wants to see what happens.
Of course I'm upset...I have already paid! BEYOND RED FLAG
She sold the puppy to the other people. I was angry and asked her to wire my money right away. She told me she wired the money.
LIE. She did not wire anything.
A week later still no money. Every day she says to wait one more day...I finally called Anne (The referral) again asking for help. Anne succeeded in getting Cherie to respond to me. Cherie stated she would mail my money. She sent a check for $800 with no note and apparently no conscience.
This woman stole $400 of my money. Beware of Ahava Afghans.

This breeder is not a very good breeder IMO. We contacted her and wanted to buy 2 female puppies. She told us they were all 900 dollars and we asked if she could send us some more pics. She had her husband send a picture of a bunch of puppies running around the yard. We asked if she could send pics of the females "stacked" so we could get a better idea of the way hey looked as we were buying them by looking at photos only. She responded by saying if we wanted show dogs then the price would be 1200 when she already told us the price was 900. :(

It always took her several days to a week to get back to us . She said we should send 1800 dollars immediately as some dogs were promised and other people were interested. We responded by saying the information on her site and the information on Puppyfind were totally different and we wanted to make sure which dogs we were buying. She said they were puppies and getting a stacked photo was difficult. This was a huge red flag because reputable breeders don't have a problem with this kind of request. We couldn't get her send the pics we requested and she kept saying one might be able and one might not and would not tell us if we could have the pups we picked out so we decided a reputable breeder would not give a prospective buyer such a difficult time that was agreeing to purchase 2 of their 6 pups. She also never sent a contract for review . She seemed very unprofessional and after some investigation of my own I found that she had another Kennel name a while back. My guess is she had similar problems and changed her name.

Glad I followed my instincts.

It comes as a surprise to read any negative comments about Cherie/Ahava because after scouring the entire United States and 4 other countries for the best Afghan Breeder I could find, I felt gifted and blessed to have found Ahava. Why? Because only Cherie and Christopher met my exceedingly high standards and were patient, reasonable, efficient, timely & responsive during the buying (and shipping) process. I know, firsthand, their top priority remains the well being of their dogs and litters, so I felt honored to meet their criteria. The sum of money "kept" by the breeder is likely to represent a non-refundable deposit agreed to by the potential buyer. The rationale behind why some money was allegedly kept is left out of the equation, so it holds no merit. In any event, it's disconcerting when things like this happen (to all parties). I feel it's always best to resolve complaints in a mature manner through direct contact and not compound mistakes by airing them as dirty laundry. My Ahava pup is the best bred Afghan I've owned & I would buy again & recommend!

This breeder is very honest and would never do anything like this. I'm glad that this breeder did not give one of her well bred dogs to this person. Now this breeder is paying the cost for trying to help prospective buyer. The breeder made the right decision in not allowing this person to buy one of her dogs...absolutely loco! I can vouch for this breeder...they are great people and would never do anything like this complaint form says. Please remove this person's complaint as there are no facts to back it up.
