I took the moving referral off Angi's list. There were two recommended moving companies:
National Van Lines
Shleppers Moving
After calling both companies, Shleppers Moving seemed easy to work with, so I chose them. The contract specified to pay half deposit, and half at delivery. My total was supposed to be $3200.
The office people at Shleppers are VERY nice, but can't always be reached.
When the moving team showed up, the lead guy was a "tough guy" who advised none of my IKEA-type furniture could be moved safely. I elected to remove five large pieces from my inventory. He told me unless an 18-wheeler truck could access the new apartment, I would be charged an additional amount of money to reload onto a smaller truck.
I called the new apartment complex and they confirmed an 18-wheeler could access all alleys. My belongings were loaded onto Richard's truck and I was advised the moving company would contact me when the load was ready to be delivered.
Shleppers called me the day of delivery and advised I must pay the drivers in CASH. I drove to the bank and pulled out $1600.
On delivery day the movers contacted me by text and said they must be paid IN CASH or a money order from the Post Office, but they couldn't accept any money orders from a bank.
When they arrived, the drivers said the 18-wheeler would not fit in the driveway, and I would need to pay an additional $600 IN CASH, and $75 because the access was more than 75 feet. I challenged the access fee. The lead guy paced out 76 feet, which meant I needed to pay this additional fee. I was too tired to pace it out myself, so I agreed.
I had to go to the bank and pull out an additional $700 in cash while they were "supposedly" reloading the truck onto a smaller truck.
When they unloaded my things, the boxes were smashed. The second guy told me "That's because they placed heavy boxes on top of light ones". When I initially spoke with Jo Ann, the lead salesperson at Shleppers, she advised: "Oh, you don't need to worry about heavy and light boxes, these guys are expert movers."
When they unloaded, boxes were damaged, lights were broken, and I knew I had been "had".
I checked Google under Shleppers Moving, and there were many one-star reviews. My experience is not "one of a kind".
Conclusion: If you care about consumers, you will NOT recommend this moving company.
Claimed loss: I had to spend $1000 to purchase new things that Richard said could not be moved. Even though these items were not moved, my moving charge did not go down. I was charged the same amount of money.
Desired outcome: Please DO NOT recommend this company to anyone.
