We adopted our dog Bella from Barbara, Goldendoodle breeder and owner of Barleycroft Kennels in Oxford, PA in 2006. Approximately two years later, in 2008, she developed Type 2 diabetes, considered very rare for a dog so young. We immediately contacted Barbara to explain the situation and asked for a refund of the cost of the dog to help defray the expense of raising a diabetic dog. At that time she acted somewhat defensive, but agreed to a 50% refund. Time went by and we eventually received a 1/3 refund. Barbara explained that she felt the diabetes was not her responsibility and was providing a small refund as a courtesy. Bella recently passed away (December, 2012) at the age of six. We were never truly able to completely stabilize her over the past 4 years and contracted Cushing's Disease in addition to her diabetes. Needless to say a very unhealthy pet. We're writing this review because we felt that a responsible breeder would have taken a greater interest in the situation and at a minimum provided a full refund.

Wow diabetes was the dogs diet. Cushings disease... It happens. How come dog buyers treat dogs like products and make complaints.

I purchased a dog from them in 2003. Later in life he did have problems of his own, but I would not say the breeder had anything to do with it. Dogs get things it's a fact of life. Mine passed away at recently from pulmonary hypertension and heart failure. I got almost 14 wonderful years with him. And yes in his lifetime I did spend a lot of money on his health but I would not blame the breeder for selling me a defective dog. Stuff happens and there are no guarantees in life.

We purchased our Goldendoodle from Barleycroft and he'll be 11 years old in December 2018. He was everything they described on the website when we first saw him, all the puppies were well socialized, clean and made it very hard for us to chose. He has had no significant health issues related to the breeder. He is the best dog we have ever had, wants to be with us, is a people dog and gets along with all kinds of animals.

Jhoeh -

We are currently looking through breeders to hopefully purchase a dog this summer. Can you please email so I can discuss your experience - This is our first time ever purchasing a dog from a breeder and of course have heard horror stories - so trying our best to do as much research as possible. jallegra413@verizon.net.

Thanks so much!

We have gotten 2 AMAZING goldendoodles from Barbara at Barleycroft Kennels! I would recommend her kennel and breeding practices 100x times over ! After doing a ton of research on the breed and many breeders, we chose Barleycroft. Our dogs have been nothing short of AMAZING! Our first goldendoodle, Kobie was a certified TDI Therapy Dog making his rounds in senior centers, elementary schools, our children hospital ICU and pediatric cancer unit.

Our daughter did a college presentation on Barleycroft Kennels practices vs irresponsibly breeders. The comparison was astonishing!
We give Barleycroft 5 stars!

This is a very unfortunate story. I too purchased our gorgeous, brilliant, ball obsessed goldendoodle from Barbara Clardy at Barleycroft in 2015 and have had no major health issues at all. Like people, dogs are not factory made and therefore things, unfortunately happen. I have met dozens (no exaggeration) of other goldendoodles from Barbara Clardy at dog parks and around town and with the exception of 1 dog that cannot socialize with other dogs (whether that was lack of training and/or crated too much or otherwise who knows) all owners have been overwhelmingly pleased with their doodles from Barbara. I never would have expected a refund and I don’t believe those are items she claims to cover in her contract. It is unfortunate and sad this particular doodle had medical issues, and emotionally and financially I understand the hardship but I think it is very unfair to peg the blame on the breeder.

@goldendoodlemommy
I have a three and a half year old doodle from Barbara. I periodically check this site to see if anyone ever mentions dog to dog aggression with Barbara’s breed. My boy is perfect in every other way except with other dogs. He is intelligent and well behaved friendly to (most) people and a joy to have in our home. But he becomes psychotic around other dogs. I had him at the dog park the moment he was able to go after competing his vaccines. He was around my mothers lab since day one and that is the only dog he loves. After going to the dog park a few days a week he got a little better with the dogs he knew but it doesn’t transfer to new dogs and the group doesn’t go as much anymore. I’m embarrassed to try a new group bc he is so nasty and aggressive people think I’m crazy for bringing him. It’s very upsetting bc he is such a love. I have always wanted to know if anyone else had this experience. I don’t remember his moms name but his dad was Q tip. Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Ours too is very aggressive with other dogs. We took him to training and even the Trainor was shocked. He is a very nervous 2 year old dog. Pees whenever someone comes to the door & has bitten twice. Our heart breaks we can’t trust him. He is good for us only. If the door rings or neighbors are outside it’s so embarrassing. I am happy others have great doodles. Ours unfortunately is special. His dad was q tip too. He goes crazy when he sees other dogs on walks. Barks like he wants to attack. It’s so embarrassing and very dangerous for whoever walks him. He is a beautiful dog. He growls at my children too who are all teens and just love him. I think it’s just the pick of the litter. We will keep trying. If anyone has any tips please share.

Our dog is the same age as your pup and is also ball obsessed! He was from the February 2016 litter. Carson’s dad was Q-Tip and his Mom was Maggie.
He is the absolutely most loving dog we could imagine! He’s like a big teddy bear—80 pounds with the height of a standard poodle. Everyone says he’s the biggest doodle they have ever seen!
Carson LOVES people and is so great with kids. He is very smart and knows several commands and likes to watch TV...I’ve never seen a dog actually watch and react to the television!
He doesn’t seem to have any issues with other dogs. He does like to jump up and “give hugs” and likes to hold something in his mouth when he’s excited. He runs to grab his blankie or a ball when guests come to the door. That’s the extent of his quirks. :)
We couldn’t be more pleased with Barelycroft Kennels and are so grateful we found them!

Hi! Our wonderful girl Molly was born on Feb 8, 2016. Her parents were Qtip and Maddie. Wondering if they could be from the same litter. It sounds as if you are describing our dog when you speak of Carson. Molly is a terrific dog and so sweet and ball obsessed. She is around 71 lbs and we also get the comment she is the biggest doodle people have seen.
I have asked Barbara if I could have contact info for her siblings but she said she is not allowed to share info. Just thought I would reach out in case Carson happened to be Mollys brother! Take care

Rosanna Isabella was purchased from Barbara in 2006. She recently passed away at 12.5 years from cancer. We are grieving a beautiful, intuitive and highly intelligent dog who was a very valuable member of our family.
Rosanna as a pup didn’t receive the socialization she needed as a second pup in a household of 2 dogs… until Quentin Dean, a labradoodle was bought when Rosanna was six. She embraced him immediately
and played with him until she became ill a month before she passed. She got along with other dogs in the neighborhood and I thank Mrs. Clardy for bringing her into our lives.

We purchased our Golden doodle (Ginger Lu)from Barbara in 2009 and have been extremely satisfied. Ginger has been a joy to have, a people dog, and loves to follow you around. She has been in good health all this time. We think diet has a lot to do with it. We have been feeding her a dry mixture from Honest Kitchen for numerous years after she had stomach issues. Now at age 12, she still likes to chase balls and run around, and is not aggressive around other dogs. Doodles are the dog to have.

We have had 2 golden doodle dogs from Barbara over the last 15 years. Presley lived for 13 years with no problems but food sensitivity. She was the best dog we ever had. We currently have Maudie who is 3 and equally as healthy. She is just as wonderful!

Hi I got my Isis from Barbara Feb, 2014. Her mom Maggie and dad Qtip. I saw both parents. Isis is 10 but still acts like a puppy. Plays and still gets in trouble(good trouble). Everyone who meets her falls in love with her. She does like to playfully bullie the little dogs (I also had a Norfolk Terrier) but they just ignore and being a doodle she wants the attention and wants to play

We bought our golden doodle in 2011. She was the smartest most lovable dog I have ever owned. Molly contracted Addison' disease in 2016, and despite the disease, she lived to 12.5 years old. She was a scamp; knew how to get into anything. We loved her and miss her so much. She passed away in October of 2023.
