Mixed Experience with BikesDirect: 2011 Windsor Knight Bike Review
I bought a 2011 Windsor Knight bike from BikesDirect in May 2011. When I placed my order, I received a quick email confirmation. I ordered the bike on a Thursday evening, and it arrived at the UPS terminal the following Wednesday evening. I picked up the bike at the terminal to check for any damage. The bike box was a bit beat up, but luckily, my bike was not damaged. However, I wish BikesDirect would use a different shipper because UPS has damaged a lot of my stuff over the years.
Assembling the bike was easy. I only had to bolt on the handlebars and wheels. All the cables were adjusted correctly, but I had to air up the tires. I set them at the max sidewall recommended pressures. I took the bike for a short drive around the parking lot at work, and I ran over a small pothole, which caused two instant flat tires. After checking them, I found that both inner tubes were blown out at the factory seam. I had to buy two new quality inner tubes on my dime, and the problem was solved.
When I had the rear tire off, I checked the cassette to see what gears it had. The bike was listed as having a 12-26 10-speed cassette, but it had an 11-28. I emailed BikesDirect, and they basically told me that they don't build bikes; they just sell them, so there was nothing they could do. I had to buy the correct cassette on my dime again and install it. I found out that my bike was delivered with a 105 cassette instead of what I thought should have been an Ultegra.
After riding 700 miles on this bike, I think it's an okay bike and worth the $900 I paid for it, especially for the Vuelta PRO wheel upgrade. However, it's advertised as being as good as a Trek bike, and there's no way it's the same quality as one. The bike is at least 2lbs heavier than a Trek 2300 they compared it to. The finish quality is not even close to a Trek. A Trek has better welds, and the paint is of better quality. The bike has Ultegra components, but I think they are seconds or cheap copies. They work okay, but my friend's Ultegra shifters on his Trek work better. And yes, I have taken my bike to a bike shop for a tune-up, but the shifters don't work as well as the ones on my friend's bike.
All in all, the bike is an okay value for the money. But in a few years, I plan on purchasing a different road bike. Will I buy it from BikesDirect? Maybe, but it won't be a Windsor or another off-brand name. It would probably be a Motobecane.
Review: Mercier Kilo WT - A Tough and Versatile Bike for Commuting and Weekend Rides
Mercier Kilo WT is a great bike for commuting and weekend rides. I bought it in 2012 and it has been my go-to bike ever since. I am a big guy, 6'4" and 210 lbs, and I ride hard and aggressive. I jump curbs in both directions and ride on rolling hills with rain, RR tracks, broken glass, and variable road conditions. I also carry heavy loads, up to 55 lbs, including groceries, lumber, and yard sale scores. Sometimes, I even carry my girlfriend on the top tube, and if she enjoys the ride, we have a future together.
The 62 cm frame is perfect for tall people like me. It fits me well without raising the seat post too high. I added lights, fenders, a rear rack, a Brooks leather saddle, and switched out the drop bars for bull horns. I ride about 1500 miles per year and prefer the direct drive for hard summer riding and flip it to the freewheel for more conservative winter conditions. I like the WT model as I can run beefy 35mm tires without any problems, even with fenders. My Kilo WT has had a rough life, but it has held up very well. Sadly, after six years and about 9,000 miles, it developed a crack in the frame at the seat tube/top tube joint. I had a buddy TIG weld it and got another year before it cracked again at the same point. Given my size, extreme conditions, and hard riding, I consider 9000 miles to be a long and respectable life for a bike well under $1000. I have cut up the frame for scrap and saved the components for a future custom build on a new frame. R. I. P. Good memories and no regrets.
I have purchased three bikes from Bikesdirect and am a satisfied customer. Their mountain bikes use outdated components like Shrader valves or ugly spokes, but the Kilo WT is a class act; as tough as it is good looking. All have arrived within a week, were easy to assemble, and have served me well in extreme conditions, delivering great value and a good price.
BikesDirect Gravity 27.5 Mountain Bike Review: Good Entry-Level Bike with Some Assembly Required
I ordered a Gravity 27.5 Mountain bike from BikesDirect and it arrived in about a week. When I opened the package, I noticed that the front wheel was bent so badly that it barely spun inside the fork. The rear wheel wasn't as bad, but one of the pedals had bent one of the spokes due to the packaging.
I contacted BikesDirect and they told me to take it to my local bike shop for minor adjustments and truing the wheels. I managed to true up the front wheel to the point where I could drive it, but both the front and rear derailleurs needed significant adjustment.
I decided to take the bike to the bike shop to make sure everything was okay. The technician said that he wouldn't bother replacing the bent spoke because it would require taking the whole wheel apart. He told me to bring it in if I break any spokes down the road and they'll change it out for me.
As others have noted, there is no provision for a kickstand on this bike. When I asked BikesDirect if they had a recommendation for a kickstand, they replied that this bike has no provision for a kickstand. They're just a drop shipper, so it's best to go to your local bike shop first and get fitted for a bike. Don't go by their chart.
The medium frame that I ended up getting is probably too small for me, but we were able to compensate for that by adding a 5-inch rise set of handlebars. The pedals on this bike were poor, so I changed them, along with the grips because the stock ones were never tight. I also swapped the seat from my Schwinn bike because the stock seat was the most uncomfortable thing I've ever sat on in my life!
The bike cost $450, and I spent another $130 on parts and labor. Overall, I think this bike is a very good entry-level bike. It has everything you would want, including dual suspension, disc brakes that work great, and a bike that looks very good.
Would I order from BikesDirect again? Yes, as long as you're aware that the first thing you're going to have to do is send the bike to the bike shop to get properly set up, and I mean every single component of the bike.
Motobecane Immortal Force Review: A Porsche on Two Wheels!
My Motobecane Immortal Force arrived yesterday and I was stoked! It only took four business days from my order date (I ordered it in the evening on February first so I won't count that one). The bike arrived in perfect condition and was nicely packaged. Everything was as expected, although the only surprise was the tire selection since there was not choice in that regard. I ended up with the Vittoria Rubino Pros, which are a nice tire. The Mavic Asksium wheels are very nice and true. The Ultegra shifters, derailleurs, cassette and chain are very nice. The FSA crank is very nice too. The full carbon frame and fork are better looking than the picture (obviously). I am also pleased with the Cane Creek SCR6 brakes (OEM model that you won't find on any website--but I sent them an email and Cane Creek said these are comparable to the SCR3 or 5 which I can't really see any difference, heck they stop the bike and that is all that matters).
Assembly took about 45 minutes, but that was after I decided I did not want to screw it up and had my neighbor help me out who is a bike mechanic. Some things really do need a professional. If your a bike guy it's simple, but even though I'm mechanically inclined I would choose a professional for the basic fit and tune. The only thing I changed out was the seat which I took off my old bike. Why mess with a new seat when the old one works just fine (any review that you see with a bad review of a seat should be ignored--you either like it or don't--so find one that you do like)? I also did not use the Wellgo pedals that came with the bike and got some Shimano PDR540s that are similar to Ultegras but are just a little heavier and are black which match the bike. The pedal is also wider and the cleat is a Look configuration. The Wellgos seem more like mountain bike type pedals (I could be wrong).
Anyway, I took the bike out for a short test ride this morning. Awesome ride! Just 5 miles but it was sure different that what I was riding. I went from a Steel Huffy 10 speed that weighed in at a hefty 30+ pounds to maybe an 18 pound bike. I went from a Mack truck to a Porsche. On the flat for over a mile held almost 23 mph like it was a casual ride (I would have kept going but I hit a stop light at a major intersection, which on my old bike it was a strain to get to 18 mph and not get tuckered out. The ride ended too soon, but it was a great little ride to test the gearing, brakes and handling which are all fantastic. Cornering was smooth. The bike is responsive. You just look where you want to go and it goes. No hills this morning as I'm still recovering from my half marathon on Sunday, but I'm pretty sure I can take the ones in my area. Can't wait!
(This is what I sent to Bikesdirect also--I hold nothing back and it's true. One caveat--do your research and know what you want and get the proper size)
Review of Mercier Galaxy ST Express: Affordable Steel Frame Road Bike for Heavy Riders
This is my review of the Mercier Galaxy ST Express, in Black with Drop Bars. I ordered it and it came fast.
First off, I'm a 6 foot 2 inch Supper [protected]@ 300LBS+. I haven't ridden a road bike in 20+ years. I have a custom-built Breezer Thunder Comp hardtail, and a Fuji reveal also bought from BikesDirect. It beefed up with 40 spoke hand-built rims. I ride off-road and hard. I recently found Zwift and did not like the stress I was putting on my aluminum frame hardtail. I went in search of a cheap steel frame that I could build up. My trainer is a wahoo snap.
First off, out of the box, this bike looks cool. The paint, welds, and frame are pretty nice and well-made. The steel is 240 Hi-ten steel, nothing special but not aluminum. The Rear Wheel is a bolt-on 130mm w a 7-speed freewheel. It is not QR! Or a cassette. The front is a QR, the rims were not perfect, but I did not care about the front as it's never going to spin. The Hubs are no-name china. I was going to convert the rear to QR it but my Local Bike shop had a QR Rim with (machine breaking surface and a better hub) spot on true for 59.00, and they swapped the cassette and mounted it for free. The shifters and derailleurs are all ok shift smooth and no ghost shifting they won't need an upgrade till I wear them out. They did need to be adjusted. However, The square BB and the Crank on the bike are absolutely no good for anyone weighing more than 80lbs. The cogs are riveted and stamped, and they flex I can see the defection in the cogs as I spin. (98 watts, and it feels like I'm going to bend the cogs). The Bottom bracket is a standard 68mm English tread. I had a spare Hollow tech 2 BB installed it and took the saint crank off my hardtail. I plan to install a Claris r2000 HT2 road crank (8-speed double) and time ac2 clip pedals, but with the saint installed, I now see 0 issues with cranking out on this bike, and the frame works nicely in my trainer no flex or twisting like I had with my aluminum frame bikes. I have over 100 miles on this now, no creaks or noises.
The following should be noted. The stem is a 22.5 it's weak it has some flex but works. It is going to be replaced with a suntor adjustable. The Bars are nice but are nothing special and wrapped nicely. I don't use the brakes or levers, the bike is used for my trainer. They look adequate, but I would upgrade them before ever using them on the road. The seat went the first day. It was rock hard. Comfort seat installed. If I ever ride this on the road, I will also replace the front wheel matching the rear one from my LBS.
Overall, I spent 229(248 w tax) for the bike, 59 for a rear rim, 80 for a good crank, and 48 got clip pedals. I Total 436.00. I'm happy, and I'm not worried about trashing an aluminum frame that cost a small fortune. I hope this helps someone looking for a cheap but decent road bike.
BikesDirect Gravity X-Rod Review: Cheap Components, Poor Quality, and Maintenance Hassles
These guys use some really cheap and low quality bike components, and they don't even have a place to buy new parts. The bike I got was broken when it arrived. The rear rack was completely unusable, and it was just dead weight on my bike. I've only had the bike for a month, and already the pedal assist stopped working, both tires popped, and the front brakes were completely out. I've only ridden less than 120 miles on the Gravity X-Rod rear rack. I tried fixing things one by one, but it cost me a few hundred dollars and took me a lot of time. The hub motor completely stopped delivering power to my rear wheel, and whenever I pressed my throttle, the connection pins between my hub motor and the rest of the bike were automatically torn apart, making the bike completely powerless. They couldn't do anything to help me, except recommend I move a washer. I was able to fix the issue by asking another more experienced professional to take a look at the orientation of the washers on my bike, which hadn't changed since I received it. They were able to place the screws in the correct order, and restore function to my bike for a good price.
However, the quality of the bike is not comparable to brands like rad power, sondors, and van moof, even though the price is similar. If you want a bike that is meticulously assembled with exclusive components and care that ensures a consistently functional and safe ride, you should buy a Sondors. The Gravity X Rod is definitely not for people without prior bike industry knowledge, and who can't do regular maintenance. Children, and many families fall into this category. Sondors will accommodate this type of consumer more than BikeDirect. If you still insist, you will need to learn maintenance skills, as well as connect with people who will regularly service this bike for a fair price. There are going to come issues that your own experience is insufficient to repair just as mine was. Regardless of this whole hassle, you or someone you know with the professional experience can build a better version of this bike for around half of the price. Don't buy from BikesDirect. Their tires seem especially poor quality across the board on the multiple bikes I own from this website, electric and standard. A handful of my buddies own these other brands, and none have faced a single of these issues in nearly a year of ownership. I guess if you plan on buying a fixer upper, but don't want to pay the bargain price of a used bike which you'd perform maintenance upon, you can just buy a brand new fixer upper from BikesDirect instead! You'll be fixing your new broken bike right out of the box!
Mixed Experience with Bikes Direct: Delayed Delivery and Misleading Features
I just got my bike from Bikes Direct and I gotta say, it was a bit of a hassle. I ordered a 29ER 4BY4 SRAM X9 30 speed full suspension bike and it took a full 3 months to finally get it. I know it wasn't all Bikes Direct's fault, but the dockworkers union and management were moving slower than a snail during the Christmas rush. I didn't get my bike until 2 months after I ordered it. Plus, when I got it, neither the front nor rear shock would "lock out" like it was supposed to. I had to take it to a bike shop because I couldn't talk to a Bikes Direct tech person directly. The shop told me that the front shock was low on oil and the rear shock was a custom shock built for this particular Motobecane model. I had to send it back to the factory to get it examined and rebuilt. When I finally got my bike back, the shocks still didn't completely lock out like they were supposed to. The description of the bike's features was misleading as far as the shock's lockout feature. It should not be called "turnkey lockout" if their is still significant movement after it is locked out.
But, it's not all bad. The sales people were really nice and helpful. The tech rep via email was polite, but not very helpful. They just told me to take it to the local bike shop for evaluation/repair. But, they did say they would help cover the cost of the labor for the shocks. Rockshox also covered the cost of shipment and rebuild of the original rear shock by changing the ports to make a stiffer shock.
I finally got to ride the bike yesterday, a full 3 months after ordering it. I think I'll like the bike and consider it a good value, but I'll have to put in several days of riding to see how I like a full-suspension bike that won't completely lock-out. The delays weren't all Bikes Direct's fault, I'm sure. The shop told me that UPS had shipped the shock to the wrong place and that cost 3 or 4 days as well.
Overall, I might order from Bikes Direct again, but only if I'm willing to deal with assembly myself or take it to the local shop. I'm a pretty decent mechanic, so I can resolve most problems myself. But, I won't be in a hurry to get my bike.
Review of BIKESDIRECT Gravity Singlespeed 29er: A Budget-Friendly Option for Mountain Bikers
I'm a mountain biker who loves to ride single speed bikes. I used to ride a custom-built steel Rocky Mountain 29er with all the upgrades you could want. I spent over 2k on it and over the last 5 years, I've had to replace the seals in the fork three times, replace the front rim with Stans tubless, and rebuild the Juicy brakes twice. I'm hard on my stuff, and I recently cracked my frame and had to send it back to Rocky Mountain for a replacement.
I ride 2-3 times a week on mostly single track trails, and I was really itching for a ride. I couldn't wait around for a month for a new frame, so I started looking for a backup bike that wouldn't break the bank.
I looked on eBay for some used 29ers, but I needed a small frame, wanted steel, and couldn't find anything decent. I started looking at some of the online bike sites like Performance and Nashbar. I had a great experience ordering a KHS solo one single speed, soft tail from Jenson about 10 years ago for about $400, so I was open-minded. I didn't know about BikesDirect, but they had a nice single speed steel Dawes for $350, which seemed too good to be true. Unfortunately, they only had a 19 and I needed a 15.
So I decided to settle for an aluminum frame and started looking at the BIKESDIRECT Gravity and the Nashbar singlespeed 29er. The Nashbar got great reviews, but it was $400 plus shipping, and it had an aluminum frame and steel hard fork. At first, I was hesitant to buy a Gravity because I'd never heard of it, but after another week of research and soul-searching, and riding my wife's 26er, I decided to pull the trigger on the BIKESDIRECT Gravity singlespeed 29er.
I went for the flat black 15.5 with the front suspension fork. It was delivered for $399, and I ordered it on a Tuesday. The bike showed up that Friday, and I spent about an hour putting it together with some simple hand tools. I had to grease and silicone the brakes, the headset, and the cranks, but other than that, it was ready to go. The only thing that was a little tricky was getting the mechanical disc brakes to align so they didn't rub. Not a big deal, I have a stand and just had to make some minor adjustments. NOTE: If you're not good with bike tools, it's probably best to go to a shop, but it's not a hard bike to work on if you have insight and tools.
I rode it around the neighborhood, jumping curbs and riding up inclines. The fork worked great, and the bike was a blast. The next day, I brought it over to my local single track and put it to the test. Is the aluminum as soft as the steel on the bumps? No, but did the bike work great and was it fun to ride? Oh yeah. The only upgrades I made were Shimano pedals and a bigger saddle. I'm sure that I'll get a lot of fun miles out of this bike. If and when stuff goes bad, I'll just replace it with better stuff.
BikesDirect Review: Dawes Lightning 1500 - Affordable and High-Quality Triathlon Bike
I bought my Dawes Lightning 1500 from BikesDirect in May and it's now September. I wanted to wait a bit before writing a review to give the bike some time and see how it held up. As someone who participates in triathlons, I was in need of a new bike but after visiting several local bike shops, I quickly realized that their offerings were way out of my price range. That's when I stumbled upon BikesDirect.
I was initially hesitant about buying a bike online because I knew how important fit was. However, after doing some research on the components and BikesDirect, I decided to give it a shot. I used their sizing guide and after a few emails and a phone call, I got everything fitted up and ordered my bike. I received an email saying that the bike would arrive in 5-7 days but to my surprise, it arrived just three days later via UPS. The bike was very well packaged and 90% assembled. Honestly, it was so close to being fully assembled that even a trained monkey could have finished putting it together. I don't know what all the complaining is about.
After assembling the bike, I took it out for a spin and it was perfect. The very next week, I took it out for its very first triathlon and finished first in my age group (55-59) and 8th overall! It was a personal best and not bad for a "cheap" online bike. Unfortunately, the following week, I had a nasty spill on the Dawes in an incident involving a free-range dog. Neither the bike nor myself fared very well. I took the bruised and battered Dawes to a local bike shop for repairs. The salespeople and some of the brand snobs in the shop dissed the bike for being a BikesDirect bike. But when I went to pick it up, the service tech told me confidentially that the bike was as good or better than the bikes they were selling for twice the money and in his opinion, it was an excellent bike.
I ride with a local bike club and have no problems keeping up with them. In fact, the Dawes gets several comments on how great it looks and I'm constantly asked where I got it. Some are surprised to learn it's a BikesDirect bike. So basically, here's what I got out of the experience: (1) do your research, (2) pay close attention to the sizing guide and ask for help if needed, (3) understand that you're buying the bike online and be prepared to do some assembly, (4) be prepared for some brand snobs to try to diss your bike, and (5) enjoy your new bike!
Would I recommend BikesDirect? Darn straight! In fact, I'm getting ready to buy my wife a new bike from them and my next bike will likely come from them as well.
Bikes Direct Review: Good Value, But Be Prepared to Tweak and Upgrade
Bikes Direct is a pretty good place to buy a bike from. They claim that their bikes are comparable to ones that cost $3,500, but don't believe that hype. You're not going to get a $3,500 bike for $600 or $700. But that's okay, just be aware of the features and parts they offer on their bikes at their price point and compare them to other bikes at similar price points. It's just common sense, really.
I bought the Boris X7 and it arrived in good condition, with only a small scratch on one of the rims. Assembly was pretty easy, taking only about 10 minutes with a helper. But once I got it home, I had to do some tweaking on the brakes, derailleurs, seat, bars, and such. This is normal for any bike, so don't blame Bikes Direct or the bike if you can't do this yourself.
The bike has decent, but not great, components. One problem I had early on was that the bottom bracket was not assembled correctly when I received it. There were extra and weird spacers inside that messed up the spacing of things, but I didn't notice it right away.
When I contacted Bikes Direct about this, they were responsive, but they told me to go buy the parts (about $85 worth) and they'd issue a credit. I bought exactly what they told me to buy, but the parts they suggested were not the right ones. They should have known this, but they didn't. They suggested a Surly bottom bracket (which is for a Shimano style crank), but my bike has a SRAM style crank, so the Surly part wouldn't work. This was their mistake, and they lose a star off their rating.
I tried three local bike shops, but none of them wanted to help me with my fat tire bike. Bike America was the worst of the bunch, wanting $150 just to look at it, change the bad part (which only took 5 minutes), and adjust it, plus the cost of the parts. So I had to rely on my own sleuthing skills. I learned a lot about bike assembly, tweaks, and repair, and I got the right bottom bracket (which cost about $40) and did the work myself in just 5 minutes. It took another 5 minutes to get the sticky grease off my hands!
Overall, I would have given Bikes Direct a five-star rating, but they sent me on a wild goose chase. I had to get the right parts at my own expense, but I actually did an upgrade when I got the right part, so I don't feel too bad about it.
I would definitely buy from Bikes Direct again and recommend them to my friends and family. They're a good outfit, but you're going to have to either do it yourself or pay for local help. Bikes from Bikes Direct are like sweat equity houses. I'm pretty good at fixing things, but I'm not an expert on bicycles. I work on all my own vehicles and have even rebuilt Harley engines with no problems. I'm also pretty cheap and love to save money, but I won't sacrifice quality for price.

BikesDirect Bike Review: Nice, but Overpriced and Not Competition Ready
This bike is pretty good, but they say it's like a $1200 Trek bike. They sent it with resin pedals for a big guy like me, and one broke on the second ride. My son fell off but he's okay. The pedal just snapped from standing on it and riding on the pavement. They say it's a professional bike, but I don't think any pro rider would like it. They say it's competition ready too, but I don't think so. The bike itself is nice, but it's not worth $1200. It's more like a $500 bike. They're sending us more plastic pedals, but I don't trust them anymore. I read good reviews about the company, but I don't think this bike is all they say it is. They should say it's like a $750 bike at most. My son likes the bike, but I don't understand why they sent such weak pedals for a bike that's supposed to be like a $1200 Trek. The shifters are okay, but they're not as good as a Trek or Giant at $1200. The brakes are okay, but the Schwinn from Walmart had better brakes for less money. We had to return it because of some plastic parts inside the tube/fork area. It was a good bike besides that. I think the BikesDirect bike is nice, but it's not as high-end as they say it is.
BikesDirect Mix-Up: My Motobecane Has a Gravity Logo - Review
So, I got my bike from BikesDirect and after putting it together, I noticed something strange. Instead of the Motobecane logo on the head stock, there was a Gravity logo. I was pretty bothered by this, so I sent an email to the shipping address asking what was going on.
The response I got was from Larry at BikesDirect, who apologized for the mix-up. He explained that Motobecanes and Gravity bikes are made in the same factory, so it was just a small mistake. He even said that my bike was now one of a kind, which I guess is kind of cool.
But, I'm still pretty annoyed about the logo. I mean, I bought a Motobecane, not a Gravity. Now I have to explain to everyone why there's a Gravity logo on my bike. And, if I remove it, I'll void the warranty. Not that I think anyone will actually honor the warranty from BikesDirect anyway.
Overall, I'd give the bike a 3 out of 5 because of the logo mix-up. And, I'd give BikesDirect a 2 out of 5 for their response. It just seemed kind of ridiculous to me.
BikesDirect Review: Decent Bikes, Terrible Customer Service & No Replacement Parts
I gotta say, I bought a Motobecane HAL5 2018 from BikesDirect a couple years back and I'm feeling pretty mixed about it. On one hand, the bike itself is pretty decent - nothing to write home about, but it gets the job done. On the other hand, when I recently damaged one of the suspension linkages while trying to replace a stuck bearing, I found myself in a bit of a pickle.
See, BikesDirect doesn't really have any customer service to speak of. No phone numbers, no names, nothin'. Just an automated phone line for sales. So if you need help with anything, you're stuck sending an email and waiting 24-48 hours for a response. And when I finally did get a response, all I wanted was a part number so I could buy a replacement from them. But it turns out they don't even have spare parts for their own bikes! And this is a bike that's only two years old, mind you.
At first I thought maybe they were just out of stock or something, but nope - they just don't carry replacement parts like any other bike brand would. They've got some generic components like wheels, but nothing specific to the frame. So I tried reaching out to Motobecane USA, but they don't have any contact info either. They'll try to tell you that BikesDirect is just a distributor, but it's really just the same business.
After a few emails back and forth with BikesDirect's "customer service" (a guy named Larry), I started questioning why they don't have replacement parts for bikes that are less than two years old. And you know what? They just stopped answering my emails altogether. Real classy.
So yeah, while the bikes themselves are alright (if a bit outdated in terms of geometry and components), I really can't recommend buying from BikesDirect. They don't have replacement parts, they don't have phone support, and their email customer service is pretty lackluster. Do yourself a favor and go with a brand that actually cares about their customers. Don't just take my word for it - check out their website and see for yourself.

BikesDirect Review: Good Bike, Bad Customer Service, Expect to be Run Through the Ringer
I bought a mountain bike from BikesDirect a few weeks ago, and it's the second bike I've bought from them in the past five years. The first time around, I had no issues, so I decided to order from them again. However, on my first ride with the new bike, I got a flat tire. It wasn't BikesDirect's fault, though. I took the tire off to replace the tube and found that the rim tape wasn't installed properly. I fixed that, put in a new tube, and went for another ride. But I didn't even make it five feet before the tube blew again. I should have been more careful the first time around. It turns out that there was some machining slag in one of the spoke holes, which caused the flats. Again, not BikesDirect's fault, but two flats in such a short time made me decide to go tubeless. Luckily, the bike came with tubeless-capable rims, so I bought the necessary tires, tape, sealant, and valve stems and converted the front wheel. It worked great, with no leaks.
Next, I tried to convert the rear wheel, but it's leaking from the rim joint to the point where it won't hold pressure. I've been emailing back and forth with BikesDirect, and they've suggested some bandaid fixes, but they keep asking for more pictures and videos. I've tried their solutions, but they didn't work. I've already spent too much time and money on this simple problem. I've told them that I just want the wheel replaced or to return the bike altogether. It's not worth the frustration. However, they keep asking for more pictures and videos. I'm not sure how this will end up, but based on my experience, I wouldn't expect a quick resolution from them if there's a problem. Expect to be run through the ringer. If I don't get satisfaction soon, my next step is to dispute the charge. Hopefully, that will get their attention. Even that may not do any good, but I'm hopeful that I'll get this worked out.
BikesDirect Review: Terrible Wheels, No Customer Service, Transaction ID: 88Y-G
Purchased a bicycle from BikesDirect, with the transaction ID 88Y-G. The wheels were significantly misaligned. Customer service responded indifferently, suggesting I rectify the issue myself or pay for repairs. Even budget bicycles from other retailers come with better-aligned wheels. I'm dissatisfied. Mike, the wheel defects were clearly pre-existing, not shipping-related. After assembling the bike and correcting a misaligned crank arm and brake pads, I'm now expected to deal with returning it or accept factory defects as standard? Even for an entry-level bike, this seems unreasonable. Your dismissive reply to my complaint and insistence on shipping damage being the cause are unhelpful. A replacement set of wheels is the only acceptable solution. Regards, a frustrated customer. Update: I've documented the wheel issue in a video available at the provided BikesDirect link.
Beware of Bikesdirect.com: Paid for Two Bikes, Received None, and Terrible Customer Service
I bought a bike from bikesdirect.com and the frame was messed up. We agreed on a $200 credit for a new, more expensive bike. I ordered and paid in full in March, but they never shipped the bike. B. D. made up stories about why it didn't ship, but they said it would ship in April (it was a web page error). They kept making up more stories, blaming Covid-19, the shipping company, the ports, and even Paypal. They show the bike for sale on their website as ships now, but they refuse to ship it to me. I called and called, but they never answer their phone. I sent email after email, but they claim they sent a partial refund (I'm still waiting for it). I told them I wanted my bike, and the CEO said he was going to have it sent to me right away. But days later, the employee said they needed to make a new invoice, and I never received it. They claim it's Paypal's fault, but I offered to give them my credit card info or just order the bike as listed on their website, and they refused. So in the end, I paid for two bikes and have zero bikes to ride. All the other bikes I could have bought months ago are now sold out. I wish I never ordered anything from bikesdirect.com. If you're thinking of ordering a bike from them, try calling them first and see how that works out for you. Also, ask yourself why a bike company like Bikesdirect.com would use and pay Paypal. It's super hard to find any type of bike right now, but I wouldn't recommend dealing with this company!
BikesDirect Review: Shady Business or Good Deals?
I gotta say, my first purchase from BikesDirect was pretty good. It was about 5 years ago and everything went real smooth. But maybe I just got lucky or something, ya know? I've heard some negative stuff about how they do business, so you gotta be careful. They do save you some money though, which is nice. But I mean, any business that's not a physical store should save you money, right? That's just common sense.
Now, here's the thing. I think BikesDirect is kind of shady. They promote certain bikes that make them the most money, even if they're not really the best deal for you. And they use all kinds of tricks to make it seem like they're giving you a better deal than they really are. Like, they'll compare their prices to other stores, but those prices don't really mean anything because their bikes are made up of parts that they put together themselves. So it's not like you're getting the same thing as you would at a regular bike shop.
One thing you should know is that they paid for the rights to use the name "Motobecane" on their bikes. And that's a big part of their whole scheme. They make it seem like Motobecane is this great brand, but really it's just a name they bought. And they pass the cost of that name onto you. So you gotta be careful when you're looking at their bikes.
But here's the thing. You can still find some good deals on BikesDirect if you know what you're looking for. I got a Windsor Dover 3 a few years ago and it's a great bike. The frame is really solid and it's well-balanced. If you're looking for a comfort bike, I'd definitely recommend it. And I just got the 2016 version with disc brakes and it's even better than the old one. My friend has a 2016 Motobecane Jubilee Deluxe and my bike puts his to shame. So don't let the Motobecane name fool you.
Overall, I'd say BikesDirect is worth checking out if you're in the market for a bike. Just be careful and do your research before you buy anything.
Mixed Experience with Bikes Direct: Great Bike, Poor Customer Service
I got my bike from Bikes Direct a month ago and I gotta say, it's a great bike for the price! I mean, where else can you find a better deal? And the customer service is top-notch too!
But hold up, I gotta give y'all an update. So I've been riding my Sturgis Bullet for about a year now (well, only 3 months out of that year because I only ride it in the snow), and I'm super disappointed with Bikes Direct. The rear hub has been giving me nothing but trouble, and since it's still under warranty, I went to BD for help. They told me to order a replacement freehub body through them, so I did. But guess what? Three weeks later, I still didn't have the part! So I went to my local bike shop and they helped me find a replacement. When I called BD to ask why I never got my part, they told me they didn't have any. But they still charged me for it! So I had to ask for a refund. And then, less than two months later, the hub failed again! When I contacted BD about it, they told me to contact the hub manufacturer directly. And when I asked if I could talk to someone at BD about it, they said they only communicate with customers by email. Like, seriously? There's no customer service beyond purchase!
So yeah, I wouldn't buy from BD again. Sure, I saved a few hundred dollars, but I've spent way more than that on shop fees and missed riding opportunities. If you're a serious rider, go to a local bike shop. They'll take care of you if anything goes wrong. BD doesn't have any customer service beyond purchase, and that's just not cool.
BikesDirect Review: Not Recommended for Non-Professionals - Nightmare Experience with Dawes Eclipse City Model
I just got my first bike from BikesDirect and I gotta say, it was a pretty BAD experience. I'm not a professional bike assembler, so I don't recommend this company if you're not one either. It's not safe for you to assemble it yourself. I got the Dawes Eclipse City model on April 2nd and it's been a nightmare ever since.
First off, the website advertised how easy and cheap it is to get the bike ready, but that's NOT true. It has cost me probably an additional $100 and (still counting) 10 hours+ to assemble and de-assemble it to return this. Unfortunately, they want EVERYTHING in the original packing and stored the same way. I need to pay for shipping & who knows how much they'll refund me. At this point, I'm praying I can get my original amount back given all the hassle.
Let me tell you about the list of issues I've had with this bike. First, the website stated my bike was for 5'8-5'11. Me being 5'11 I chose this size to be safe, but the post was way too high that I could not see anyone shorter than my height even getting on the bike! I had to go all the way to Home Depot buy a hacksaw to cut it shorter for myself. Given that I already spent 6 hours on the bike, I was tired and just wanted the company to reimburse me for this. It took 4-5 back and forths just to get them to reimburse $10 for me to get the hacksaw.
Second, upon getting on the bike, my chain slipped and it was so dangerous! I almost fell off the bike on the road. I asked a friend about this and they said none of the pre-assembled parts were ready and this is unacceptable from a safety standpoint.
Lastly, the spoke guard broke after the 2nd time of riding it. I only noticed since I heard a clacking noise as I was riding it. There is no way it would break unless there was something wrong with the bike given that it is brand new. At this point, I just want to return it and get a refund.
Dealing with BikesDirect has been a hassle. I will update this review based on what they say. I can only deal with them via email since they have no phone number for customer support. It's been a frustrating experience and I don't recommend this company to anyone who's not a professional bike assembler.
BikesDirect Review: Lackluster Technical Support & Hidden Details
I gotta say, BikesDirect ain't the best when it comes to technical support. They got some canned answers they'll email ya, but don't expect any real help. I got myself a Motobecane Caf? Centrtury from 'em, but I couldn't get a hold of Motobecane themselves. No phone, no email, nothin'. They say to contact the dealer, but that's BikesDirect and they ain't much help either. So be careful, ya hear?
I did some diggin' and found out that Motob?cane was a French company that made all sorts of vehicles, including bikes. They went bankrupt in 1981 and got bought out by Yamaha, who reformed 'em as MBK. Nowadays, they make motorscooters. But that ain't the same as Motobecane USA, who imports bikes from Taiwan.
If you ain't handy with bikes, you might wanna go to a local shop instead. They might charge ya more, but at least they'll help ya out. I'm pretty handy myself, but I still had some issues with the bike. BikesDirect said it could take a 700x42cm tire, but I spent $100 on some 700x40cm road tires and they didn't work. The front derailleur wouldn't clear the tire in top gear, and the frame clearance in the rear was only .060" on the sides. I had a heck of a time keepin' it centered, even with the wheel straight. And I had to remove one brake pad just to get the tire off. Plus, there was this weird chip-like noise comin' from the front tire that I couldn't figure out.
So, if you're thinkin' of buyin' from BikesDirect, just be aware that they ain't gonna be much help if you got technical issues. And make sure you do your research on the bike you're gettin', 'cause they might not be tellin' ya everything.
They are always unavailable
It's absolutely impossible to get their attention if something is wrong with your order.
In a nutshell. Had several issues with my received bicycle (torn gear cables).
I called their customer service. Only one out of my 6 calls were answered. And to be honest I was said nothing useful. They just kept transferring me from one rep to another, and it took me 2 hours. I just wasted time, nothing else.
Then I stopped paying them and on the next day, I got about ten calls from the reps! Miracle!
ps. my issue hasn't been resolved yet...
Extremely poor customer service
I have ordered an expensive bike from BikesDirect website and was promised a 3 day delivery. When the delivery date came nothing showed up so I immediately contacted BikesDirect for more details. I was expecting at least some information but these guys simply said that they have no idea when will I get my bike!
I asked them to get some info and contact me back and they said yes but of course that never happened. It's over a month now and I still have no idea what is going on. They refuse to refund my money and ask me to be more patient! Ridiculous!
It is impossible to contact them.
I wanted to buy a bike. I went to the local stores, looked online and finally found the perfect bike on BikesDirect. I am not a reach person, so I could not afford to buy something expensive. But there was a simple and not very expensive one on their website. So I ordered it the same day! I was dreaming of my own bike for years, so I was extremely excited about my purchase. When it arrived I was not so happy anymore. When I placed the order I picked up the red color, but they sent me the blue one. Also the wheel was a bit damaged. I wanted to contact them, but couldn't find their email or phone number on their website. I was upset and disappointed. But I finally gave up. I don't recommend BikesDirect, because it is impossible to contact them if something goes wrong. There is no customer support at all.
I recently placed the order on the website www.bikesdirect.com. I tried to pay with my Visa card, but nothing. The page showed error. I tried to reach the support team, but all agents were busy suddenly. I waited couple of hours, but nothing changed. I don’t understand why such problem occurred. The worst company and services ever, so avoid these ### and post comments about your experience with them.
Unprofessional staff and better don't deal with them
I bought bike from the website www.bikesdirect.com, but I would advise this website. It broke after a week and these ### refused to repair it. I argued with them within several weeks, when finally the rep told me a lot of unpleasant and it was really unprofessional. I was shocked, but therefore I decided to warn other people. They are rude, unpleasant, unprofessional and better don’t deal with them or you will lose money and time. Please leave comments about your experience with this seller.
I got a set of Continental tires from this web site and there was a flaw in the tire and I could not personally talk to anyone about it. I don't recommend ordering anything from this website.
whoops- meant to say: You ordered from Biketiresdirect.com. They sell bike tires. Bikesdirect.com sells complete bikes and does not sell Continental tires by themselves. They have some pretty incredible deals on complete bikes and wheels which come with free tires.
Bikesdirect does NOT sell tire. You ordered from Biketiresdirect.com - please correct this?
No order
50cc scooter still on order from 14th of may. Then got the colour wrong and said it could be another week. 2 and a half weeks later-nothing
These kinds of companies are a toss up.I myself ordered a chinese motorcycle from a wholesaler(powersportsmax), and got lucky enough to get it in one piece and working properly, but i've heard plenty of horror stories to counteract my luck. Honestly, don't bother with them, you'll just get jerked around if something goes wrong and you want it fixed. The cheaper price isn't worth the headache.
