I was standing outside at the Hawkesbury, ON Home Hardware Store at 3:40pm Saturday April 2, 2020 on my crutches waiting to be served due to COVID-19 Protocols, and what appears to be the manager, a big bald guy only asks questions, and speaks to me in French when i've already demonstrated that I speak only English. I do understand some French, but can't keep up in understanding if spoken too fast. I asked for the availability of a product, and still continued to answer me in French... this is an Ontario town, but is known to be a French community, too bad, there are English that live here too who also deserve respect.
A moment later an older Blond Haired woman comes out to ask what I needed, and spoke only French to me also, now its hard to believe that for people in the customer service industry would Not speak a word of English to better, and Politely serve their customer.
She must have understood my request for the product, cause she went in the store to get the product for me, and returned with a similar product, but a different variation for a different application of my specific request, telling me in broken English this time, that this is all they had left, and was the most expensive. Since I wasn't able to freely walk the store for any other variable options for my needs at a decent price, I only said I wanted 2 instead of a full pack for $2 less than than the price I paid for 2 items that cost $5.
I'm sure they wanted to give me the hardest time possible by grabbing the most expensive and the incorrect item off the shelf to teach me a lesson for not speaking French, by telling me this was the only thing they had left, when it really wasn't, just to make me pay more. Ignorant, disrespectful, discriminative, under my skin, blatantly, outright rude. I personally will Not be shopping there for any of my own personal needs EVER AGAIN. I will drive to Cornwall, ON for it which is an hour away.
After instructed to come in the store to pay, I could hear the Bald guy and the Blond womans voices bickering about "on parle Anglais" "Les Anglais Colis", toute-toute Angais, then some more chatting, and giggling from the both of them; which almost drove me over the edge to say some thing about their location being in Ontario, where it is expected that they honor their English customers language rights. Well I found that deeply insulting and condescending at the same time, and had the mind to tell them to their face before I left that "Congratulations you just guaranteed yourselves to appear on the 6 o'clock news for discrimination" Good work dummies.!
But I didn't since I was running an errand for my mother with a Serious Respiratory Disease called COPD, who couldn't get it for herself without putting her life at risk, and the fact that I may have to return to the same location for more product, and feared I may not get served the next time.
I'm almost 50, and normally when I hear things like that happening behind my back, I Always open my mouth, and certainly don't use a verbal filter to express how I feel about the discrimination if I know I don't visit often.
That's alright, because if its Not Dealt With satisfactory on Monday when the Head Office is open, I Am Going to the Press about this one... Enough is Enough.!
