GoodLife Fitness - suspicious business practices

My son (age 18) is interested in joining a new gym. The annual membership where he's been going for the past two years has just expired and he's looking to try somewhere new. I decided to do a little comparison shopping so I called Goodlife Fitness to inquire about their rates (their website doesn't offer any details).

I was immediately passed along to a "manager" who, instead of answering my question about the fee for a 3-month membership, inquired about what type of services I required. I explained that the membership would be for my son and he just wanted basic fitness (toning) and strength training. The manager then wanted to know if the membership would be a gift. I replied that whether or not it would be a gift depended upon what the fee would be. I was then informed that rates weren't discussed over the phone since Goodlife offered superior "service" and that it wasn't fair to compare what Goodlife offered based on the cost-to-the-client. I replied that cost is part of the equation when comparing facilities and would certainly factor into any decision that I would make. The manager responded that the Goodlife policy IS TO NOT discuss rates over the phone, it has to be done in person. I was shocked!

Any business that refuses to divulge such basic information as what they charge for their services is "highly" suspicious in my book. After reviewed some of the other Goodlife complaints on this forum. I'm not surprised that clients have had problems with Goodlife because their business practices seem somewhat "shady" to me.

My daughter was only given the option to sign for a full year when she went to re-new after her three month Sept-Dec membership expired. She lived in Antigonish NS while attending university. A yearly membership obviously made no sense but it was her only option in January. Her gym partner, it turns out, had their parents phone and complain and it was magically adjusted to a three month term again. We only found this out afterward. At end of term she came back home to Ontario (small town, no GoodLife gym available). After a couple of months, a collection agency contacted her about overdue payments for the balance of that 'year' of membership, her checquing account having been closed. Snakes is right. Don't even waste your time trying to get someone that can apply common sense or see 'policies' as guidelines rather than 'laws'. We waited a full year for a Business Bureau complaint response to simply read back all the obvious about the fine print in the contract, signed by a person of age of majority, policies must be equally and inflexibly applied to ensure fairmness for all members. Crapola of course. Obviously not interested, in teh least, in salvaging a positive customer experience. We and all we ever speak with will always be advised against GoodLife. I met Patch evans once and heard him speak...I don't think he would see waiving a portion of a fee for someone unable to attend his facility, thus enjoying no value for money, would be a problem...just common sense. Selling a 1-year membership to a student who lives in another province when they make clear they only want 3 months is criminal...setting up a big, negative scene.

yes, you are instantly locked in for a year with them when you sign on, after giving them your banking information. Snakes.

Shady alright. I did the mistake of going into the Goodlife at Bardon, asking a consultant for the cost of a 12 MONTH MEMBERSHIP for my daughter as a gift. I advised the consultant I had a set period of time and she proceeded to take us around showing the facilities of which I had already agreed to join her and seen them prior, not realising she wanted to have me sign in a rush so I wouldn't hesitate to sign the manipulated wording/boxes.
Goodlife proceeded to have the payments come from my credit card, apparently that is so you can't cancel your credit card once you have an ONGOING contact but you can cease the payments coming from your savings account. Hence 12 months later, payments still coming from my credit card. I ring up to advise that the 12 month membership period is up and to stop taking my money, only to be told you need to make an appointment with a consultant, come in and explain why you want to cancel. I said, No, I took out a 12 month membership I want to cancel NOW. She then said to email an email address she gave, of which she just happened to leave out one letter of the address, so of course, that went no where. I then proceeded to ring again 2 days later to be told, "You have to give 30days notice". I then complained, emailed again at the different address given asking for confirmation of my request - still no reply. Went to the gym, to be told the consultant is away till next week and she would leave a message. 3 days later finally a phone call - no regard to my 12 MONTH MEMBERSHIP, only thing they say, "you signed an ongoing contract". Manipulated by their sleazy practices to get as much dollars as they can from you. WATCH OUT!
