I went to Wal-mart today to cash my Federal tax refund check. The clerk input the information they need to cash the check. It was denied, and I was given a little slip, from Certegy Check Services, with reason number 3 as the reason they denied the check. The clerk entered it again, and same result. So I called Certegy (ultimately 3 times), and was told by the first guy, that this happens sometimes and he gave me instructions to give the clerk to try again. I hung up, we tried his way with the same result; reason 3. I called them again, got a different guy, and he said the problem was that my social security number did not match my name. Keep in mind, I've had this name (and of course SS # lol) for 16 years. I was told by him the problem was with Equifax (they provided the information), and that I should call them. I called, and was unable to talk to a live person unless I requested a credit report. So I came home, got online and did my annual free credit report to see if I could figure out the problem. Everything there was correct, so I called Certegy AGAIN, and got a different woman this time. She looked at everything and could NOT find a reason that my refund check was denied. I was then connected to a supervisor, who ultimately told me the reason the check was denied, was because SOMEthing about the check had sent a red flag up and tripped their fraud procedures and denied the check. I asked how could this be as it is from the US Treasury? He told me that somewhere in their database, someone passed a fraudulent/bad check that had SOMEthing in common with my check. So they refuse to cash my check, and that's that! After doing some thinking, the only thing I can think of, is that when Walmart enters the check #, their program (Certegy) only asks for the last four digits of the check #. I think if they had been able to enter the entire check number, all would have been ok. But because it was only the last four digits, someone, somewhere in the world probably passed a bad check with those (the last 4) numbers on their check, so it spit mine out as fraudulent, based on that. Of course, the supervisor could NOT tell me what the exact reason was as it would jeopardize their fraud safety measures. So I am surmising it had something to do with the check number. That's the only thing it COULD have been. So I think Certegy needs to ask for the ENTIRE check number, so that this doesn't happen again. It was a horrible experience, as whenever a check is refused, all anybody sees is your red face walking away with no money...as though it is your fault. I hope this experience is helpful to anyone else out there, and will help change Certegy's practices (though we know THAT'S a pipe dream).
I went to Walmart today, a day later than you, to have my Federal Tax Return Check cashed and I got the same exact thing. Certegy declined my check and called it Reason #2. When I looked up why it was declined on AskCertegy.com, the response was that something didn't match the check, or the check was printed wrong. So instead of dealing with Certegy, I plan to call the IRS directly tomorrow and see what they can do. Were you able to get someone to cash your check? I don't think it's a coincidence that someone else had the same exact thing happen to them. Either Walmart is full of crap or the IRS released a bad batch of Checks.
I also cannot cash my check. I called the IRS, who, of course, is IMPOSSIBLE to get a live person on the phone. I already had previous problems with the IRS and my refund check. I did my taxes in FEBRUARY and hadn't received my return until the other day. I had called the IRS as the online status told me to and got a live person then. They took my address ( I had just recently moved ). This occurred twice. I finally have it, was so excited, and now it keeps getting declined.
Same thing just happened to me! Was anyone able to get the check cashed anywhere else?
This just happened to me at Fry’s grocery store when I tried to cash my Tax refund check from this veterans claim. I thought it was denied because the people might have thought it odd why I received it in January but nope! Certegy wouldn’t tell me the reason. They said either some of my information doesn’t match theirs (which is stupid because why would they have my information in the first place) or that it was denied because I “don’t cash checks there often enough” which again is a ridiculous reason. This amended return is literally 10 years late only due to a law passed in 2016 & the IRS deciding to refund many of us veterans money they took so why in the world would I be cashing checks with them “often”. What a joke! I tried another place and they said they couldn’t “verify it”. I’m not sure if it has to do with this government shut down or what but it’s literally from the Dept of Treasury, what could be fake about it. Tuh. What a hassle. We finally receive the check but can’t cash it & I can’t even call the IRS because they’re still shut down ha sheesh. A mess.
I just had the same thing happen to me with my stimulus check, now who doesn't cash a stimulus where check cashing is available... they said my file info is incomplete? it said I can obtain a free copy of my info where my file is being held in certegy's, and I have 60 days to do this in... so do they only cash these checks if you have good credit? are you kiding me! rhonda kuaana springer
