Words to describe this experience would be more than horrifying. The contractor was hired to do some simple jobs around the house. The payment was divided into three parts and the ordeal starts there.
He takes the first payment around June 2012 and then disappears for about two weeks. After constant follow up, he agrees to be back and does two small jobs and disappears for a 2 week vacation. He comes back and starts to ask for second installment when the work was not even done 10%. This payment was again done as required and on his insistence. He was extremely aggressive and threatened to stop the work.
The ordeal continues. All the big promises made by the contractor before signing the contractor soon vanishes in the air. He was soon found to be cutting corners and using substandard materials in complete contrast to previous verbal agreement. The workers used to be working half day and soon leave to be working on some other projects which the contractor was working simultaneously at the same time. The contractor has no control over the work management and the materials which lead to the fact that the workers sometime would be there and just siting around and doing nothing.
During the course of the job, the work that was supposed to be done in 10 -15 days got extended to 2 and half months. we had to sacrifice our work schedule and sit home to be understanding the work progress. During this we found several flaws in the workmanship in some core jobs like tiling, cabinets, painting etc. He destroyed carpet as this was not protected enough that had to be replaced back by him on his own expense and after enough arguments on the fact. The list is quite long and we have enough documentation regarding those facts and we would soon contest him in the court for them,
Over the end of the period, one fine day he starts asking for more money on the pretext of "good faith money" as before claiming to be broke even after taking into account that there were severals projects half finished and some not even started. Uptill now we had given about 66% of the installments and this was supposed to be last installment to be given after full completion of the jobs. On reminding him the facts, he soon turned agressive again as before and threatned to quit stating absurd reasons. He soon quit the job half finished and he even had the nerve to claim in small claims court for the last installment after even understanding that the projects were left unfinished and some not even started.
During this whole time, we had to occur immense mental trauma and stress and we are currently contemplating a legal case to counter his claims in the court. We would not like anyone to be undergoing the same ordeal again. DO NOT HIRE THIS CONTRACTOR PERIOD. Beware before signing any contracts with the contractor and always insist on making it using your own language to avoid any such ordeal. It is also a good idea to search the company reviews in sites like BBB, complaints.com, /link removed/ pissedoff customer and complaintsboard.com rather than depending on one site to be sure about his reputation. We sure learnt our lesson and would like to warn everyone else regarding this dubious character and stay away from this contractor
Update on October 2012
well it's good that the contractor is making notes of extremly negative reviews being seen in BBB. The above review is in addition to another complaint seen in BBB. People usually don't take pains to go to this lengths wasting time in writing reviews unless they are extremly being conned or swindled by the contractor. The contract is claiming to be working for last 30 years and is boosting on miniscual reviews being done for last one year in the noted site. A true review on any contractor would have positive and negative reviews and consumer than has to give weightage based on the gravity of any negative reviews based on his own descretion. If a consumer is made aware of previously negative reviews and patterns being followed he or she would often make enough provisions and seek all the required answers before deciding on a contractor. The contractor site which he is claiming isitself is in question since it never gives consumer a chance to choose the contractor and instead gives the leads to choosen few contractor based on some internal arrangement and this is where everything gets setup. Consumer gets 3-4 contacts from the related contractors and he gets no choice but to select from the given few (2-3) numbers as compared to other sites where the consumer would choose the contractor based on reviews and gravity of any negative reviews as such. Other sites would give a huge list (more than 50 -60) of contractors to be choosen and evaluated as compared to this particular site and this is where we went wrong in our choice as well. When we first choose this contractor the BBB complaint (which is different that shown above) and this review obviously did not existed and if we had even a slightest idea about such negative review or complaint even from 1 or 2 people we would have applied enough weights before choosing this contractor and stayed miles away from him as well. I would agree with Diane who has written the review here in terms of the contractor being all talk with substandard help and materials. He works with a team of 2 -3 people taking numerous projects from other consumers all at the same time without comiting any deadline to complete the job. The job that is often estimated to be completed within days then takes months. The ordeal does not end their, he has no managment over the money and labor, often would only show up his face and his charm when he requires money which would be often dedicated on other projects with other consumers or some other unknown personal expenses. This fact would often cause him to fall in the trap of having no money to buy for the original projects and then he starts to purchase substandard materials and takes shortcuts with the workmanship to save on labor and materials. He would keep on using someone else's money for some other projects untill the point he is dried up and shows his sorry face again asking for money. As mentioned by the reviewer regarding the workers working for 3 hours and often diappearing for hours would again be testimonial to the fact that they would be working on other projects all at the same time over other places. He was doing the same thing in our projects as well. This fact would never be told and would have never found out unless a close supervision is ever done and when confronted the previously friendly face would soon turn out to quite opposite. You would soon find a aggressive contractor on your face trying to finish the projects with no consideration to materials, workmanship or the consumer property. At that time he would seek shelter in his cleverly crafted contract that would be done in a way to con the consumer. Consumer would often would explain in words regarding the expected work and he would obviously use his charm to make believe that it is being accepted, but would soon confront with a contract which would have no relationship with the previous discussion. He would often estimate the jobs quite cleverly taking advantage of consumer knowledge of the jobs and then start to cut corners in materials or labor in complete contract to the initial discussion. Three different people all reporting the same pattern cannot be wrong and all of them have the same complaints regarding substandard materials, workmanship and streching the job to infinity and only to turn up when he requires money. In our case he left most of our projects in unfinished state and some where not even started and he had the nerve to ask his so called "Good Faith Money' as if we are supposed to have faith in him after all the ordeal. He is questioning the reviewer why this was not told him before and now is being discovered after a year is a testimonial to his workmanship that has detoriated after a year and was found over time when really being investigated. He has also questioned why this medium is being choosen is as there is no other medium to let other people know regarding such practices and warn them well before before going throught the same ordeal. I would advice anyone to consider all the facts and if given a choice make a weighted decision after evaluating all other contractors using apples to apples comparision before signing any dotted line with this contractor. No consumer would ever deny payment to a work done to his or her satisfaction and there would be no fire without a sparks given by the contractor.
i agree with this and we had similar experience with this contractor.
