Moneygram 'secret shopper'/survey scam!
I received an email from this company like 10 minutes ago & I knew it was a scam - but only because there are a ton of these out there. The other ones look nowhere near as 'real' as this one - if you google their address its some shack on a rural route (A friend suggested that after I tried cashing the postal money order that was a perfect counterfeit) & they never have a company web site - but again they send either a check (Applied to one more just to see if they're all fake) or postal money order that's so legit looking the postal worker would have cashed it if the computer didn't stop him - and it didn't say why so he gave it back to me! I thank god I don't have a checking account or I would have been screwed in the past! This company has a legit looking site! Fyi: real secret shopper jobs pay like $10-30 a job & register with some secret shopper association! I hope everyone researches before doing this! There are plenty of real studies, focus groups, & product trials that pay good money!
Survey Participation Scam
I answered an ad for a research study on Moneygram customer service. They said you would be sent a check and you would cash it keep a portion of the money and deposit the remainder in different Moneygram locations, then you would complete a survey rating their customer service. The claimed they would send a survey packet and all they sent was a check for $1590.00 and a photocopied letter claiming to send detailed instructions after I confirmed the delivery of the funds. The letter is signed Ruby Andrews Sr Research Analyst. Her email was [protected]@fieldscopesolutions.com and no phone number was provided.
#1. Look carefully, this is not being sent via FedEx - it's a cheap "Priority Mail" envelope. #2. The return addresses on the check and the envelope are completely different. #3. Everyone should know that an 'out of state' check (Oregon) would take a minimum of 8 days to clear - even if the check was good. #4. And finally, who in their right minds would mail out checks for over a thousand dollars to complete strangers? No one does business like this. Remember folks, "If it seems too good to be true, it usually is." I knew this was a phony scam as, soon as I opened it. What really pisses me off though, is that I know they got my name and e-mail address from one of the survey companies I usually do business with. That means there's a leak. If MoneyGram was really diligent they would they would do a thorough investigation and report these people to the appropriate authorities for "Mail Fraud." But I doubt they'll take the time or effort; which is why these scams and frauds continue to increase.
Beware even if you cash the check and leave the money in your bank account your bank will most likely close your account and mail you the money. This happened to me. Luckily I was able to get a new bank account quickly, but things could have been way worse. My old bank teller told me your name could be added to a list so it was important to open a new account quickly.
I found it strange when I received this check via fedex. I've done many survery's in the past so at first I thought it was payment for one I had already done but forgot about (it's happened before). Glad I checked it out.
Thank you...I got the same check from the same company and contact as the OP. I cashed the 1590 a few days ago and when I went to my local moneygram at CVS the operator on the phone mentioned secret shopping scams. Something along the lines of "If you were asked to secret shop a moneygram location do not wire money to anyone you do not know. It could be a scam" . Luckily, I hung up the phone came back and researched. I put the cash back in my account and contacted both moneygram and my bank. I told Moneygram the name of the company as well as their contacts. Hopefully they investigate it further and stop people from scamming others.
This is a scam. I've worked with multiple market research facilities in the past and was duped into this "survey". I am embarrassed to share that I deposited the check for $1580 into my account, pulled out the cash the following day, and then sent the moneygram. Today, 3 days after sending, the check bounced and the $1580 was removed from my account. DO NOT cash this check or send any money to this person. I hope they get what's coming for them and hope that someone will read this before doing what I did. If anyone else has any information, please let us know. At this point I am pretty confident that I will not see the $1330 that I basically threw away, but hope that I can help in anyway to catch these thieves.
I got the same thing. Is this a scam?
