Mercantile Adjustment Bureau misrepresentation

Mercantile Adjustment Bureau left a voice-mail on my cell phone at 8:30am this morning June 3rd 2009. A man by the name of Brad said to call him back immediately in regards to an important matter. He left his phone number and extension as [protected] ex:3091. He also left a case number to reference.

I called back the number on my lunch break and was able to reach his assistant named Kate. Kate asked for my case number and explained I owed a $14, 000 dollar debt to American General Finance. I explained to Kate that this debt was over 5-7 years old and under a chapter 13 bankruptcy years that I had filed in 2001 or 2002 and was for a personal loan.

She said that Mercantile Adjustment Bureau represented American General Finance and this debt was still owed. She said that American General Finance would be willing to settle for $7, 000. I told her that I currently live pay check to pay check and did not have that kind of money. She then offered me a settlement of $5734.35 and said I could pay it in two monthly payments.

I was confused as to why I still owed this debt, but I was frightened too because she said that if I did not make payment plans then it would go to an attorney I would go to court and the judgment against me would require the whole 14, 000 to be paid back as well as all court and attorney fees. I was so scared, but a little relieved to hear that she could settle all this for $5, 734.35. I was almost grateful to her for reducing this amount significantly for me from $14000 to $5, 734.35. I told her I would try to borrow the money from friends and family to settle this.

She said she would need my checking account number today to lock in the deal and to call back if I need it cancelled. I gave my checking account number and routing number . She did not need a check number.

I felt good about locking the deal and felt that it would at least buy me time to do my research on this matter. I did my research and I found out that others have been threatened and scammed by this company all over the US.

I called Kate back immediately to tell her to cancel my checking withdraw that was scheduled for June 23rd, 2009 and to also cancel the 2nd checking withdraw scheduled for July 23rd 2009. She said she cancelled it and nothing would be withdrawn from my checking account on those dates. I asked for a receipt of confirmation however she stated that there was no way to do that.

I was still concerned that Mercantile Adjustment Bureau might do the electronic withdraw from my checking account on those dates or alter the pay plan however they wished to debit on different dates or different amounts since I gave them my routing and checking account number. I then called my bank and asked what I could do to block or stop these people from withdrawing funds in case they did not keep there word. My bank said that because Mercantile Adjustment Bureau only asked for my checking account number and routing number and not a check number with it, they could go in at anytime and withdraw. She advised me to open a new account and slowly switch everything over while I closely monitor the current account. Then she recommended closing out the current account. I'm in the process of doing this right now. What a nightmare. I thank the people who take the time to write these warnings and complaints all over the internet.

We have received calls on one of our cells phones for at least 3 years looking for a Christina T******. It is a recorded message. In spite of the fact that I called them back once and told them we had had the phone number for years and we had no idea who this Christina person was and to remove the number, the calls have started up again. This time they will hear from my lawyer and I may look into filing with a class action lawsuit against them for harassment.

Adjustment Bureau has been calling my house for months looking for someone who we do not know. Their message says that if you are not the person you need to hang up and by continuing to listen to the message you admit that you are the one. I have been disconnecting these calls to let them know I am not the person they are looking for but in vain: they keep calling over and over again. Finally, very tired of these calls, I contacted them and told them that the person who they were looking for was sure not in my house and asked them to remove our number form their system. I was told they would. That didn't happen. They keep calling us and they call every day. Today I have contacted them again asking why they called again and what they didn't understand when I had told them that their information was wrong. The operator (his name was Steve) was very rude! He would not listen, interrupted, raised his voice...as if he was trying to convince me it was me who was wrong and he hung up. Nice! I called them again and they would not take my call! I tried again... and talked to another operator he was no better, - he claimed I had never contacted them before and it was the first time I was calling them, which is a lie, of course. And I called them the third time (if they call my house from debt collecting bureau (every day!) stating we owe money (and we do not!) And look for someone who is obviously not here - why cannot I call them at least a few times to make them feel like I do? So, I did. The same man named Steve took my call and was (and I can understand why) very irritated and not happy to hear me on the phone again. He asked me what I wanted I told him I wanted them to stop calling my house. Again he said I never had contacted them before with this request - liar! Also, he tried to convince me that the reason he hung up on me was because I was rude. I could only smile at that. I was sure irritated of having been getting their calls for months! - and I sure wanted to let them know that I was tired of it. - Was this rude from me to let them know it? I called them only one time last week and three times today - and they didn't like it and kept hanging up on me. So, they do not like to be bothered with such calls but this is what they do every day - harass people. Anyway, very irritable he asked me in a rude manner what I wanted and if I wanted to talk to the manager - what is the point to talk to the manager? - It is obvious that they are all like that there and such companies who harass people like that should not exist. Anyway, I asked him to tell me the name of the company he represented but he wouldn't. Instead, he kept telling me how rude I was... - Simply amazing! He kept asking me what I wanted I told me once again that I wanted him to tell me the name of the company - again he wouldn't give it to me. I insisted. I had to ask him THREE times and finally he gave me that information. I do not believe that people like that will keep their word and stop calling us. So my husband said we were going to report them. Enough is enough.
I believe in paying bills and debts but if you do owe money to somebody I would not pay it off through this bureau. I would not give them a penny.

I too got a letter from them last february about a debt from Citi hahah I will not even name the name of the person i spoke to because i think they give faqke names so it wouldn't matter. But if you receive anything, one advise ( i was silly not to follow it for the first time) but send them a validation letter. That'll stop this nonsense. They broke so many rules over the phone with me that i am done with them. I can just block their number as they have an "e-number" obviously not my real phone number. good luck to all

I got a letter from Mericantile Adjustment bureau LLC stating that i owe 2, 564.63 but they will take 642. First of all, i dont owe citibank any money. that's the first clue i notice that this company is a scam. the second clue was if i owe 2, 564 dallors any banks isn't not going to settle for more then 40% off the orginial debt. the amount they offers was 70% off the orginal amount. Now all the bank i knows are in for profit. Why would they take the lost? that was the second clue. so the next thing i did was did a search on this company sure enough i was right a scam company.

WOW... I am glad that I looked all this up online before returning a phone call to these people. They have been calling me for a bout a week now everyday at the same time. They continue to tell me it regards a personal legal matter and that I need to attend to it immediately. I know for a fact that I have no legal matters that need my attention, my bills are paid on time if not early and I monitor my credit on a weekly basis. I guess now I am prepared for the next time they call and I can tell them not to contacting me anymore and then if they continue to contacting me then I will go to an attorney for a harassment suit, I bet that would shut them up real quick... Thanks to all of those out there who still look out for your fellow man, good to know there are still SOME good people left in this world.

This company keeps calling and leaving messages on my answering machine. Since I know I do not owe anyone and have no past due debts (I monitor my credit reports regularly) I do not even bother to call them back. Today's message said something about arbitration. Yeah, right! Why have I not received anything in the mail regarding this? I even went as far as to check my County's public records. Nothing!

I'm an educated individual and won't fall prey to this company who evidently attempts to defraud people. It is a good thing this site exists for others to research before they get caught up in the baseless threats!

Merchantile is threatining me to the point of wanting to die. I'm trying my hardest to pay my bill. Pamela screams at me, slams the phone down and hangs up in the middle of our phone conversation. She giggles and takes pleasure in when I cry. She is a terrible heartless individual, who does not work with you.

This company loves to ruin peoples lives. They scare people to the brink of suicide. They make threats to drown you in legal issues. Pamela takes pleasure in screaming at me and making harmful threats, belitteling me and she has no idea what I'm going through financially. She slams the phone down and hangs up on me in anger. She's verbally abusive. This is terrible, what do I do?

Called Ms. Moore back last night and left voice mail: denying the debt, send validation & do not call. She called again this morning and left message to call her regarding a "complaint". I called her back and she said she got a "disturbing" voice message from me from last night. I told her I had requested her to not call. She proceded to tell me the law says she has to make contact. I told her the law also says she has to provide validation. She then proceded to yell that I was "harassing" her and hung up. I called her back, identified myself and again tried to request validation when she started screaming over me that this is "harassment" and hung up. I don't understand why when she calls its a requirement of the law and when I call its harassment.

Just recieved a voice mail from a Ms. Moore stating that she was calling regarding a complaint filed against me in the county in which I live. She wants either me or my attorney to call her back to discuss the options. After some research found the phone number belonged to Mercantile Adjustment Burea. I don't have a clue what she is talking about but don't plan to call back. I believe if a complaint was filed against me a county deputy would have served me with a court document.
