Very Nice except text formatting
I think this reader is excellent start. I like the reverse mode that gives white text on a black background. That gives it an edge over iBooks for me when it comes to the reading experience. I also like the access to all these great texts. What I hate is the formatting. If this is based on the Gutenberg scans of the documents then I guess it's nice that they are available. It is kind of ironic that Gutenberg's name is used, though, when this formatting is a total insult to the idea of the printing press and typesetting.
iBooks carries free titles too and they are formatted more professionally with things like, you know, chapter page breaks and a hot-linked table of contents. It also does note taking and highlighting. This reader and google books have more titles but awful formatting. I go back and forth between this and iBooks depending on what I need.
Hostage = Whining
There are only ads when browsing for books... Not while reading. Please enlighten us as to how this is "holding you hostage." Self-righteousness and overblown melodrama only degrade the credibility of your review...
My main complaint is purely aesthetic... The page turning animation looks like the book is bound at the top, like a note pad, rather than on the left... Not a major thing, but the animation does not follow a normal page turning gesture, which is a little distracting. All-in-all this is a convenient way to browse the thousands of public domain titles out there... Combined with a decent (but not great) reader. I'm hoping that future updates will improve the look and functionality of the reader... An alternative is using this app to remind yourself of a classic book you'd like to read then finding it on iBooks or Kindle, where you'll usually find a free copy.
Exceeded expectations!
I downloaded this app hoping for enough material to keep me entertained for a few hours, hopefully not having to search that same amount of time to find something worth reading. I then spent about five minutes looking through the books offered, and found a few days worth of books I want to read. All the books on this app are in public domain, meaning they are older; If you are trying to find newer books, you will have to get one of the paid apps, or an app that has books for purchase. This being said, many classics are in 'Free Books' as well as a multitude of more obscure titles that are hard to find even in many libraries. If you are interested in the older writings, want reading material that, although not new, you more than likely have not read, or just want some books to pass the time, this is definitely worth the memory space it takes up, and the cost is perfect.
Free Books is a great app!
So far I have read only the first several chapters of my first book, so I cannot speak to the consistency over many books. There have been astoundingly few errors in the text so far, and the books download amazingly quickly.
Naturally, the iPad's display makes the pages look nice; the way the pages turn is also pleasant. This iPad application has many other great features and should not be underestimated. I definitely give it a five.
***
I have had this application for a while now and am still delighted each time I search its contents. Usually there are too many books to go through in one sitting, so I have to come back to the lists later. There are categories like philosophy, history, fiction, autobiographies & biographies, and many others. I would rate this app as high as possible if the number of stars ever changed.
Convenient
As a student of law, this app has all of the original political philosophers I need to study for school: Homer, Plato, Aristotle, Machiavelli, and more! I can thumb through the pages and add notes during class when my teacher addresses direct quotes.
There are a couple things the app could improve on, though. Firstly, the highlighting and note taking feature is helpful, but advancements to the system would be beneficial. For example, the highlighter only comes in yellow. I personally like to read and study texts with color coded highlighters to keep my thoughts organized. Multiple highlighter colors rather that just one would improve this app. Secondly, not all of the books are organized with a table of contents, so it's sometimes necessary to thumb through the pages to find a particular chapter rather than jumping directly to it.
However, I appreciate this app and will continue to use it.
A Literature Force Multiplier
The iPad and this app have done more to encourage me to read than all the classes I've ever taken.
Aside from the ease in finding literary "greats," it's biggest contribution has been finding obscure, out-of-print writings of the past that reveal more about life back then than all the revisionist history texts written years later and forced down our throats as students.
To read a "History of Abraham Lincoln" written only 20 years after his death by a historian of the time, reveals more about the thinking and world of Lincoln's time than anything written years later and assigned as required reading.
The incredible ease with which the app invites you to discover new experiences took me to places I never before imagined -- and exposed me to more of the world's literature than I ever thought possible.
I never dreamed that this electronic toy would serve such a noble purpose so elegantly and easily.
Great app!
Although there are a few things missing from this application that are found in most other e-readers, the ability to have all of these classic books in one place, available at any time, and all for free, truly makes this an amazing app. That being said, there are a few improvements I'd like to see before this could become the 5-star application it deserves to be:
Streamlined layout: The layout of each book suggests that the pages were just scanned. Chapters end and begin on the same page instead of on separate pages like in most real books. It'd be nice if these digital books had the same layout as their paper counterparts.
Bookmark function
Dictionary function: Because many of these books are quite old, the vocabulary used in them can be confusing. It'd be nice to be able to look up a word right in the app instead of having to have a dictionary at my side, or having to switch applications just to look up a word.
Other than these minor nitpicks, this is a great application that I have been and will be using for a long time.
Great concept, but buggy
The problem mentioned in several reviews about missing words between pages is an error when displaying two columns. If you switch to single-column view, that seems to alleviate the problem (but it's still a bug--I like my two-column view!). Speaking of bugs, I tried to report the problem within the app, but of course(!) GetSatisfaction, the service the developers use for feedback, just hangs after I sign in. Another bug! :-(
The most maddening bug that's hard, if not impossible, to live with is the "reformatting" message that's displayed when opening some books for the first time. The message references the "great new reader" included with the current update. This is my first version of the app and I'm opening a freshly downloaded book. Why do I have to wait while the book is updated for the new reader? That should be done on the server side before the books ever reach my app!
Free is free, and it's a good start toward what could be a great app. I recommend getting it but not upgrading to the pro version until the developer fixes these issues.
excellent app, one of the very best, highly recommended!
I have been using this app to help my daughter improve her reading, pronunciation and even reading comprehension, for years now and it's simply the best tool I could have asked for. I gave it five stars because it's illuminated, you can enlarge the letters and even has a built in dictionary although some books it seems doesn't have one like Sherlock Holmes which we are almost finished reading. We have read Heidi, treasure island and the secret garden will be next as well as little women and other classics. Tithe literature is rich, all the classics are to be found and more, my only hope for future updates will be the expansion of new and current books like, Chronicles of narnia, Percy Jackson and the Olympians, the entire selection of Newberry award winners for children books so that we can follow guided reading and level . the vast majority of the Newberry award books are excellent except for a few controversial ones like the Giver, and others.
in addition more current sci fi and fiction books etc.yet the selection they have is very good. thank you very much.
BEST book app so far
I am taking my time here to let everyone know how amazing is this app: first of all, all the books are in fact FREE, which is great seen all other apps that try tricking users with pay-to-read novels and such.
First of all, the variety is incredible: I mean, from Edgar Allan Poe to Jules Verne and pretty much any author you can think of, there are literally THOUSANDS of different stories to choose (all downloadable in less than 10 seconds, AND in different languages).
Second, the reading interface itself is simple and pleasing to the eyes, with options to change brightness, font size and others.
Third, the only think I might complain of is that, in some cases, symbols are used to mark words such as people's names and others (E.G: _Jules _Verne). I really don't mind seeing little adds appear in the application, which seems to bother some...
Finally, I really recommend to download Free Books if you want an awesome app to read whatever you want, at any time!
5/5 if you could correct these minor problems: thanks for this incredible app Spreadsong Inc.!
Is this even a real app?!
Nearly all the books lack any sort of description at all. It says it's unavailable at the moment but it's something "we are working on." How hard are they working on it?! This app has been around long enough, and so I find it slightly troubling that they are still "working on" something so basic as the descriptions for the majority of the books.
But the thing I find most troubling is that when I click on the tab for "SUPPORT/FAQ" it takes me to an in app web page that immediately has a pop up of a picture of a naked women laying spread eagle with the name of a porno hotline covering up the bare minimum of her unmentionables that apparently, according to the spread eagle woman in the ad, has several "hot and ready" woman on hand who want to chat with me.
I am completely annoyed, how am I getting soft core porn pop ups in the FAQ section of an app for free classic literature?!
My first impression was that this app was a total scam to get my email info but judging from the 21k plus 4 star reviews for the previous version prior to the last updates, I can see that's not the case. So what gives?
Best way to read for free on the iPad
It didn't take Free Books long to update their app when people started yelling for search and delete. Both were essential features, and now they're in there, making this the absolute best way to read Project Gutenberg books on the iPad (Apple's iBooks store contains some of these, but it should be noted — it is not the complete catalog). As another reviewer noted, this app is basically the equivalent of the indispensable Stanza on the iPhone.
The reading interface itself is sepia, which is nice, it's how I set my Kindle app as well because it strains on the eyes a little less than black on white. I think some readers might like the option to do black on white (or white on black, for vision-impaired users) though. Another option from the Kindle app that would be nice is the ability to turn off the page animation. It's cute at first, but eventually it just slows you down and becomes kind of irritating. But iBooks has it too, oh well.
Overall, Free Books gives you access to a lot of great content for free that will keep you reading classic books for a long time, and does it in a pleasant interface.
Nice app
Overall this is a very nice app. I prefer classic literature, which is usually free on most eReaders, thanks to Project Gutenberg, but it is nice that all books here are free. It has most of the features I want, such as night reading (white print on black), bookmarks, point size control, and a dictionary.
I do find that it changes pages too easily, so that if my finger slips I can end up several pages away. I also prefer a right to left page turn effect as I sweep across the screen but this app has a bottom to top page turn which is distracting.
It would also be nice if the dictionary size could change along with the text because I'm blind without my contacts and I mostly read in bed, or if the dictionary could switch to night reading, but I have not found a single eReader app that does either of those things.
The only other thing I would like would be to synchronize my library amongst my iPad, iPad mini, and my iPod touch so that I would only have to download books once, and if switching devises, be able to pick up where I left off reading on the other device.
Even with my wish list of enhancements, I am very happy with the app and the large selection of free books.
Used to be excellent, currently not so much
When I first started using this app a few years ago, it was wonderful, and I used it regularly. Then, after a couple of years of not accessing it regularly, during which time there were at least a couple of updates, I started using it again, only to discover to my disappointment that it has become very clunky and difficult to use, as follows: 1) the choice of having a white or dark page appears to be unavoidably tied to whether you have chosen to scroll or turn pages -- why on earth would they set it up like that? 2) As with almost any other book-reading app (iBooks, Kindle, Nook) I used to be able to bookmark my place in any given book so that I could be in the midst of reading more than one book at a time; for some unfathomable reason, this app no longer offers that functionality. 3) When I try to scroll down through my library of downloaded titles, I cannot get beyond a couple of rows without having the app quit on me. 4) There is no longer any way of telling how many pages remain in the book. There may be other flaws that I haven't discovered yet, but these are plenty to be going on with. Very disappointed and frustrated. The two stars are for being an app that provides access to a vast library of classic books; zero stars for functionality.
Update? FAIL!
Since I received no help from the "App Support" that is posted on this page, here is what my husband suggested I do. It worked for me.
First, delete your original app. And yes, you will lose your books.
Second, reinstall the app. You will have to download all your books again. It wouldn't be a huge problem...BUT you may find that some of the books you have previously downloaded, are no longer listed for download. I had the entire set of Wizard of Oz books, but can only find three of them now.
I know I said I would give this ONCE wonderful app five stars, but I am only giving it two stars. Not only did I receive NO help from app support and I had to have my husband fix the problem, I can't get ALL my books back!
Whatever stupid thing you guys did to this once wonderful app, you've ruined! Put it back the way it was BEFORE this latest crappy update!
UPDATE...AGAIN (Sept. 15, 2011)
What is it with all the commercials popping up on this app? I know this is a free app and I don't mind an occasional ad plastered at the top or bottom of the screen...BUT I HATE BEING FORCED TO WATCH A COMMERCIAL! You can't skip moat of them! There is NO WAY I will "buy" this app now. I will just stick with my Kindle app. If I could give negative stars to this app, I would! Shame on you for RUINING this app!
UI needs work
I love this app, and have a hundred or more books, some of which I have read and some I am reading. Unfortunately, the app's UI, so appealing to the beginner, is now getting in the way. I'd like to see the app open to my library, which is confusingly labeled Browse on the main screen. Then I'd like to see new ways of viewing and presenting the list of books I have -- e.g. a simple text list I can sort by author, title, or genre. I'd also like to see all my notes in their own screen so they are not dominating the library screen and instead see a list of books I am reading so I can quickly pick up where I left off.
And then there's the actual reading. The options for this are good, but very basic. I'd like to be able to change fonts, for one thing, and be able to change the background color. But most important, I'd like to see the various plain text conventions for emphasis converted into styled text. Why can't the app (or the developer before download) convert _fake underlines_ to italics, e.g.? And finally, I realize page numbers are inaccurate in ebooks, but if you're going to show me the page I'm on, please also show me the total number of pages in the book at the current font size.
Finally, the various buttons at the top of the screen are partially obscured by the iPad status bar. This may only be in iOS 6, though.
Reading for Fun In a Cool Site
The Classics, most of them make people think they're smarter than they really are, you know? Ah, but a lot of these are truly fun, and yes, entertaining, if you try. I mean they are cool & hip, & true to the finer things, or call them the bawdy, the really relaxing, the far out, whatever, but if you look beyond the old timely words, they speak gentle, crazy & even walk the fine line between what's nice & what's walking on that wild side, or, fighting back with the smarts you need in these crazy daze ( I mean days). Look at Fanny Hill, the original vernacular for the bawdacious. And sure there are the Classics' Classics, but even these are chosen with having a good old reading time, the way reading's supposed to be. Reminds me when I first fell in love with reading- Now don't laugh- But hey- Comic Books Vocabulary is way up there in College level Words(!), but Good Old Superman used to fill my lonely teenage hours with wild excitement- Until Colleen Phalen walked into the Candy Store- But that's where & when my reading tastes took a " Candy Turn to the Fanny Hill Side of Life," so it's all good- As is this delicious guilt free site is too: Expensive Mind Candy- But for Free! Like a Great Gift that keeps on Giving, even when the Party's are all over! Read on Brothers & Sisters: Read On! And on and on and on...
Hot Dog!
Yippie Skippy, a site that makes many books free and available right at your fingertips. The best part is the application is FREE! it seems like so many sites that when started we’re great and what made them super great was that they were free. Let’s stop all this greed. Lets all start realizing it feels so much better in life if you just share the wealth (book, Apple, a smile and a hello, open the door for someone, pay for the person behind you coffee)...the world needs more “free” and available to more than just the civilians with cash money all day long. Everyone has a story...don’t judge. Just for the fact I have books at my fingertips and I don’t have to take a trip to the library is super! Just to have this available during times my kids and I are waiting on something we can read together (instead of them playing some mindless game). It’s said best and we need to “rewind” our ways of thinking and treating one another “Come on people now, smile on your brother, everybody get together, and try to love one another right now”. Especially with all of us being trapped inside bc of this virus. I as a Triple Negative Cancer survivor says “F-that Ma͏s͏k” it’s like a kid playing in dirt...won’t hurt, builds immune, let your children do their job and be children and play! It’s time we stop living in a constant fear of a virus that may or may not kill you...that is something not a single soul has a choice or say on and that is when it’s their/your time to go and be transformed in your next life. So, all that said Thank You! Read a Book! Read the banned books (I bought at a museum in Chicago a I love banned books bracelet and it has the books as little charms. Very bad [censored]! Looking forward to your site. Cheers!
Started with Sherlock Holmes
For many years I have only been reading science, especially medical books. Now thanks to my switching from IBM PC to Apple Ipad3, thru free books I am once again back to reading the classics. One of my favorites was The Holmes stories written by a physician (A. Conan Doyle) from whom I learned the power of seeking facts upon which I could eventually deduce causes of diseases such as Paget's disease. From a number of clinical, radiological and pathological and lad experimental facts I eventually was able to deduce that the initial event (etiology of the disease) was most likely a slow virus that entered a bone destroying cell known as an osteoclast. After entering said cell I surmised that it induced the cell to start destroying bone outside of a normal host's physiological mechanisms. This in turn leads to a cascade of events which leads to the disease known by it's original descriptor Dr. (Sir) James Paget. The discovery of etiology and the mechanisms which lead to an understanding of the signs and symptoms of a particular disease is known as The Pathogenesis of that disease. Anyway, reading and coming to a full understanding of Conan Doyle's famous detective with regards to his deductive abilities is extremely important to free thinking and discovery, not only for detective sleuthing, but for completely rational scientific thought/discovery as well.
Thank you Freebooks for bringing these classic works to the Internet, where undoubtedly they will educate our youth, likely far better than our modern day school system, which has declined a great deal in just 50 years. The education of the modern scientist and many other pursuits was definitely at its Zenith in the 19th Century: Pasteur, Koch, Metchnikoff, Virchow, young Einstein, Edison, and many, many other great scientific minds.
There were So many good books. Used to have great formatting
11/21 UPDATED REVIEW: Like many recent reviewers, I am severely disappointed by the update on this app. At first, I was pleased by the new aesthetic as it gave a sketchy-looking, but wonderful/user-friendly application a modern and more sophisticated appearance. I figured the creators would resolve the glitches and shoddy functionality of the updated app within a matter of a few weeks, but nah. They've turned a smooth experience into a frustrating one.
In this update we lost quite a few helpful functions. Fist and foremost, we lost the ability to define many words within the app (it works for some, and not for others). When it works, you'll highlight a single word, it will provide the option to define the word, and then an entire, bright and cumbersome page slides up with the dictionary entry. Otherwise, it only provides the option to highlight/underline the word, but it doesn't actually highlight nor underline.
Secondly, we've lost the ability to make notes about passages. I loved this function because it helped me remember why I highlighted something. I'd return to the passage, see my highlight, and take genuine joy in reading about my first reaction to the passage.
Browsing the app has turned into a nightmare wherein your favorite books/authors from the old version are either absent or dysfunctional.
I could go on but I've procrastinated enough at work by writing this.
techie-app-creators, you had a wonderful app. When are you going to fix this nasty update? At least give us the old version until you figure this one out. Please and thank you.
ORIGINAL REVIEW: I'm very impressed by this app. The books are formatted so well, there is a "night theme" option to give a black page with white letters, and it provides a space to define new words. I've already read 2 books with this app, and I'm currently on my third. Books are free! I mean they aren't new/modern books; they're classics. Personally, there are a lot of classics with which I need to be acquainted, and this app facilitates that process.
My Books – Unlimited Library Complaints 18
Terrible app!
I’ve had this app for many years and admit I don’t use it with great frequency. That being said, I often have issues when I do.
I purchased it in 2015 to remove the ads and open more audiobook options, etc. They want me to pay again to remove adds and open more audiobook content! There is no “sign into account” option either which is really strange. I’ve reached out to them twice by email and have had no response. I’m very disappointed because this app had great potential. I’ve given it 2 stars because I can at use it like a free app. Don’t waste your money if you want more from this app!
Free" Books? BEWARE
How is it 'free' when I have to pay for the audiobooks 4.99 and have to pay 9.99 to remove ads? This was an uncomplicated app prior to this version...even though I paid for the audiobooks, I most likely will remove...not going to use my metered Internet for annoying ads! Very unhappy!
Update: CRASHES...now it doesn't work at all...loads only a splash page with something about their servers being overloaded...none of the buttons are working...only thing I can do is close the app and re-open it...very bad...fix this soon...by the way deleted my books, said my internet wasn't working either, it is
Hideous - Keeps Crashing
This ap crashes every other time I try to download a book. In addition, there is no way to search other than by genre so if you want to browse you have to scroll through the several thousand titles of your genre. Even if a title catches your attention, there is no information about the book other than title, date and authors name. There is not even a one line description. This ap is supported by ads, but I could put up with watching the occasional commercial if it would quit crashing every time I use it. I am using a brand new iPad so, I doubt my system is the problem. At a price of FREE, this is too expensive.

Highly recommended, but caution will not hurt.
Absolutely love this app!
With the NEW version and with ALL the older versions, did you know you can't login properly with email, or we can't recover the password from the all. ( recover option doesn't work)
I have been giving 5 stars, but just to get your attention to this matter, I have one or no star for now, not because the app isn't awesome
Especially the later version combined ebook and audio book into one, this is a great contribution to all mankind, thank you so much for making this a better world with or without realizing it !
I have the Windows desktop version and iOS versions as well! Utterly love the design interface of this app!
Ruined
This used to be an easy to use app but in an effort to get people browsing the content they've made. Analog interface that appeals to an altered sense of intuition, but not one a modern user will be familiar with.. When downloading "complete pg edition" winston churchill works it wouldn't download book, and could not read book. Purchased audio books portion but recalled I'd purchased it before, they must have rereleased the app or something. Maybe their heart is inthe right place but they better fix the app. I'm sour'd in my perception of their app and will probably not download it again remembering just how poor it was this time around.
Crashes on every attempt
I have used this app for years, mainly on long, cross country flights. And I would have given a 5 star rating at that time. But 6 months or so ago (maybe longer, I only use it when flying) I can no longer use it. The app loads with no problem, and I can browse my library with no issue. I can tap a book and read the info on it, but as soon as I attempt to open the book itself the app crashes to the iPod main screen. It is still running in the background, but every attempt to open the book kicks me back to the iPad screen. I have it on my phone as well, with identical results.
I miss having these books available, and it appears I need to look for a new app.
Love the titles, not accessible
I love this app. Started reading Count of Monte Cristo. Loving it. Wish I could bookmark my page and know my page number. I was at one point able to open the app. After a few minutes to several minutes it just quits on me and will go back several pages, which can be frustrating when you realize you’re re-reading the story. Since the most recent update, I can no longer access this book. I deleted the other books I want to read in hopes that would help with my connection to read The Count of Monte Cristo. I am going to delete and try to start again. Please fix the automatic quit glitch, bookmark, and the glitch where it quits and brings you back several pages.
You have ruined my favorite reading app
First, this app has little relationship to the previous version. My library is mostly missing. Authors works are broken up into chapter books. Ridiculous. Links in settings mostly go to porn sites. No direct way to communicate problems and issues to the management of this service. Commercialization of site is not appreciated and may be illegal. Reverting to old format in settings doesn't really work and my library in that setting is still decimated. Hope you developers who are patting yourselves on the back saved the old app and database, because this one is junk. Hope you are reading your reviews. They are mostly angry like me and somebody needs to take responsibility and straighten out this mess.
My library problems
I have had various versions of this app for years. In the past it has worked very well and i like being able to read classic titles. The newest upgrade however seems to have significant problems. For example, books get added to My Library i did not pick. The last time i opened the app around 100 titles were dumped in and more keep getting added. I did not search or pick any of these. Its time consuming to delete them and it makes it difficult to find the books i do want to read.
Sometimes when i click to exit a title it exits the app. While effort was made to make the app look more attractive, the functionality seems to have gone down from previous versions. I miss the old versions of this app. Please fix the problems.
Frustrated!
I really enjoy this app and would love to give it 5 stars but I can’t. I agree with some of the other complaints such as no way to mark your page, etc. But my bigger issue is that this app crashes about every 10 minutes! I even deleted it and reinstalled the app. Still the same. Do you have any idea how frustrating it is to be reading a story and have the app crash so often? Not only that when I reopen the book I literally have to flip through almost 200 pages to get back to where I was just reading! Ugh! It seems to me that it needs more frequent updates. The last one being 5 months ago and no one has addressed these complaints yet? I’m going to look for something different if this isn’t resolved very soon. It’s just ridiculous!
Never loads
Or at least, takes forever to load. When I first downloaded this app, I was very happily reading all these classics I've never read before, and then one day I tried to open Jane Eyre and that loading screen you usually see with the loading symbol in the middle just stayed indefinitely. I was upset and eventually deleted the app. Recently I tried re downloading it and was sad to see none of the books I had previously downloaded were saved. Well, whatever. I redownloaded Jane Eyre and finished reading it (thank goodness for that at least), and now I'm getting the same problem. I don't know what could be wrong - maybe I'm not waiting long enough for the app to load but if it takes more than a minute.. Well, I shouldn't have to wait that long!
Terrible update!
I used to really like this app before the update. I bought the full old version for like 3.99, and everything was going great. However, just last night, I updated it to this version; and even though they apparently added more books, they've also included some really annoying ads and the format of the app is more confusing. This was a total ripoff and very dirty of them because I paid full price for the other version so that I would not get ads. Now, in this update ,they're asking for 10 dollars to get rid of the ads; and if they think I'm buying that they're crazy! I was so upset that I deleted the app because I hate this new version so much. I wish they would either refund my money or give people the option of getting the old version back.
NEW UPDATE.WHY!?!?!?
Pulling my hair out over here! Lost all of my saved books, AND now it reads as a scrolling, never ending page...as if you were reading a web article.
I LOVED the layout/page turning function of this app in its previous version! Felt like reading an actual hard cover...or the closest thing to it in the digital landscape anyway.
BRING IT BACK PLEASE!
I will get over losing my library/bookmarks but I will find a new page turning app if I must...don't like reading a novel as a scrolling web page. There's something tactile about turning a page...and a feeling of accomplishment when you get to the bottom of the right page and turn to the next set of pages...why wouldn't this still be left as an option? You can make the browse interface retro!
Free Books?
I’ve started to read three different classic books. When I’ve read three to five chapters the book is no longer available, when I return to continue. So, I open another book.
When I try to contact support I receive “403” or “404,” unavailable. Same with asking questions. “Unavailable.” For the past ten days to two weeks the phrase, ‘we are trying hard to ...’
Well, I don’t believe the app. will ever perform as designed. This is extremely disappointing, considering classic literature has provided so much enjoyment in the past. The lack of an explanation is mystifying. I would not recommend downloading or using this app. at this time.
I can only hope whatever problem exists will be solved. The loss of such treasures is truly disheartening.
Does not function
This was a passable reader which used the Gutenberg project catalog as a source. After the last update it ceased to function on my ipad. Books were downloaded but not necessarily stored so that once loaded it was anyones guess as to whether it was still in the IPad. I made the mistake of loading about fifty books prior to a trip into the Australian Outback for reading and discovered I needed a WiFi connection to read them. I books or Stanza are much nicer apps. Additionally, there was an audio book connection for Librivox's free files. The charge was $4.99 US and it now also will not work. Do not buy the Audiobook service. For these I recommend using your computer and downloading the file to your IPod - this program wouldn't save any of my downloaded files.
Missing critical components
I’ve only had the app for a couple days and I was really happy about the “pay once” that was relatively cheap for all of the audio books. Having only gotten half way through one audio book, I’ve been REALLY frustrated by the facts that
- I can’t pause the audio and can only stop it by closing the app
- I can’t place book marks to save my place anywhere so I’m always shutting the app to talk for half a second then spending five minutes trying to find where I was
- when a chapter ends, the automatic continuation skips a chapter and I have not realized that before and missed big plot points by skipping entire chapters.
Even though those are the only things I’ve seen, they’re driving me crazy. I am NOT one to complain and be negative, but I really want this fixed. Why bother having a pause button if I can’t use it?
Adware
Ads for Audible pop up and interfere with app navigation whenever I reopen or switch back to the app. The ads are Not subtle; not ignorable. The ads take over the whole screen and I have to tap a close button to dismiss them. Maybe I should pay the $10 for ad-free, but the way this app is going makes me doubt the developers.
I agree about the issue of no bookmarking. It DOES have page numbering. But for the classic book I’m now reading, the page numbers restart with each chapter, and there is no index/table of contents listing the chapters. I have not had the crashes others are reporting.
Also, links in this store to the developer website and support do not work.
It offers a big library of free titles and I don’t know of a good competitor. So I’m giving two stars, and still using it.
This app used to be great. Why the disappointing changes?
Quality, not quantity
Imagine my joy at the thought of 23,000 free books! What burst my bubble, however, was discovering the indifferent editing. Entire paragraphs had been left out of Edith Wharton's "House Of Mirth", for example, as well as the chapter breaks, a sloppy at best and disrespectful at worst editing job that leaves the unwitting reader with a mistaken impression of a choppy, poorly plotted work. I am pretty sure I would rather have 230 free books that bear some relationship to their originals than 23,000 which bear none, or conversely, would be happy to pay a few dollars for a library of well-edited books, while a free library of sloppy edits bears little appeal for me. Skip this and pay a buck or two for an app that bothers to include the entire book; the missing paragraphs make for a pretty weird reading experience. Not to mention insulting to author and reader
