This app in NEVER accurate - do not use if you are living paycheck to paycheck
When using my debit card, whether I’ve used it as debit, credit, or even withdrawn cash - the chances of any of the above charges posting on my account in the app is completely RANDOM. They could appear up to 5 days later. They could show up pending (subtracted from the available balance.) They could show up pending again (not having affecting the available balance.) They might even show up immediately after making a purchase. Withdrawing cash can be posted as “pending” and not reflect on your balance until days later. You cannot rely on this app for an accurate available balance for your day to day life.
My problem today: I’ve been trying to pay $165 from my debit to my credit card for 3 business days. It would not let me set the transfer date for anything before today. I checked at 2am today to make sure the transfer was going through. At 2am the 165 was back on my debit card and no payment was scheduled out. I tried to make the payment again for today and it was successful. As of 9:30am there are 2 scheduled payments for 165 being transferred to my credit card, leaving my debit card over drafted. I called today and they told me I could not do anything until the payments processed tonight at 10pm. I was told that at 10pm I would be charged an overdraft fee of $36. I was told to call tomorrow to try to get one of the payments back but with that over draft fee I will still be in the negative.
The moral of the story is that the app will do its own thing on its own time AND you can transfer imaginary funds to pay off your credit card.
DEFINITELY SAVE ALL RECEIPTS AND KEEP A SEPARATE CHECKBOOK FROM THIS APP TO KEEP TRACK OF YOUR FUNDS.
Not too Shabby… when it works
I feel torn about the PNC app. To be honest, I liked it better when it was the Virtual Wallet app, but regardless, capabilities and features-wise it is pretty good. The reason why I rate it so low is because of a few app issues that seem to have been there since it became the main PNC app, except for one recent update which I strongly despise.
1.) Login: every few days, the ability to login using Face ID (and Fingerprint ID previously) is randomly deactivated. Even if I try to manually re-activate the feature once I login, it never remains. Over and over again, it continues to deactivate and won’t save. The only resolution that I have found is to completely delete the app off my phone and reinstall… every. couple. days.
2.) Mobile Deposit: The mobile deposit feature is the most aggravating of everything. Now that the app “automatically reads” the check amount, there isn’t the ability to manually enter the check amount. One of my prn jobs as an independent contractor pays me every two weeks via written check. 90% of the time, the app cannot correctly read the amount of the check by a significant margin. I have frequently spent hours-to-days repeatedly attempting to try and make a deposit but can’t because the app misreads the check completely… an error with a difference of hundreds or thousands of dollars. It is angering.
3.) Frequent Crashes: the app consistently crashes or is mostly always “undergoing maintenance”. For an app that’s going through this much maintenance so often, there should NOT be this many issues.
Please, please, please fix these things! I love banking with PNC but at a certain point, it’s too much to handle and potentially annoying enough to cause someone to completely move to another bank.
Fishy AF
Do not use this app and do not use this vile bank. Your available balance, ledger balance, and pending withdrawals are never right. Items that show as posted are changed to “pending” two or three days later. Whenever I pay a large bill, a credit card payment or Verizon payment for example, the money shows as being deducted right after I make the payment, but a few days later the money is “put back in”, no longer shows up as pending or as posted, and there is no record of it being withdrawn at all. Let’s say that I only have $200 in left my account and I make a payment to a Verizon right now for $175. After I make the payment, the app shows the money being deducted from my account as “pending”. My available balance is down to $25. Right? Right. I then spend $20 and have $5 left. Then three days later there is nothing in pending or posted, and my available balance is back up to $200. Then on Thursday, a few hours or immediately as my paycheck is deposited, the account goes negative as PNC claims that I did not have $20 of the $25 that I spent and that I did not have $5 left, and immediately hits me with a $36 overdraft fee. They do this almost every single week whenever I make a payment over $100.
I freely admit that I don’t understand how or why they do weird crap, but I am intelligent enough to add and subtract, and I keep a separate copy of my spending and it’s literally never the same as what PNC claims. Weird, huh. They have stolen literally over $1,000 in bogus overdraft fees from me in the past via their corrupt methods and I’m fleeing from their clutches as soon as I am able.
It is my personal opinion that they are doing this to trick customers so they can swipe their $26 overdraft fee. Bank with PNC at your own risk.
PNC is failing me
Already wrote them a bad review on a survey about a recent phone call and now I have to write another bad review, this time about the new app update. I've banked with PNC since they changed from National City, so, for a long time.
Mobile deposit has always worked great for me. I loved the interface of the app, and everything was clean and easy to read, in my opinion. I will say, though, that I don't have anything but a checking and savings account with them so I'm not one of those frustrated that I can't see my investment accounts and everything with just one app. If I did though, I'm sure that would bug me.
With this new app, it's like you have to work really hard at everything now. They tried to get all deisgn-y with their little icons in gray at the bottom of the login page. As I graphic designer, I can appreciate what they're going for there, however, as a user, just make everything super easy to read and clear at a glance for a banking phone app, as people are on the go, and need to just be able to quickly see everything. I can't tell you the number of times I've been in a grocery checkout line and just needed to check my bank account. With everything just being white background, black text, it's harder to see, and they made recent transactions so small that it's not as easy either.
The animations are terrible. I already don't like stuff just moving around on me for apps and websites, except maybe to open and close, and when it's my bank, whom I've had some issues with lately anyway, it makes me feel a bit insecure. It's almost as if the new app is a reflection on the shifting and lowering quality of their service as a whole.
WHY do I have auto updates enabled on my phone and HOW can I get the previous version back?!
PNC Mobile Banking
There are the normal inconveniences and difficulties with signing in and out with a banking App. In general the APP works well enough with one great inconvenience. If you share your accounts with a significant other the biggest problem is that each of you has to have your own account for use. Your account is linked to your social security number and your debit card. I would prefer to not have a debit card but you can’t use the mobile app without one. Worse than that: while both of your cards are linked to the same account the activity in each is invisible to the other user. Until activity has cleared the bank you can’t see any pending payments. If you go to the individual information for a payee you can’t see any payments made by your partner. It will only show pending payments once they are being processed and within a day or two at most from clearing the bank. If you arrange to pay a bill a week or earlier than you actually want it processed, it doesn’t show as pending. Even worse! You have to enter all the information for each account into each user’s separate sign on. It can’t be transferred in any way. You just have to enter every single piece of information separately. You cannot easily share the job of paying bills because of this blind aspect. However, if you are sneaky and want to steal from your spouse or cheat, this would work very well. Another poorly thought out aspect of bill Pay is: if you agree to get e-billing on credit cards, it will tell you that you have bills that are due but doesn’t give you the total but only the minimum payment due. I have often had to leave the App and sign in to my card account to find out what I actually owe. If you are getting e-bills the whole statement should be retrievable from within the App.
Improve Virtual Wallet Experience
While the app is functional, the new PNC app lacks the user friendliness and great design of the discontinued Virtual Wallet app. If you are a Virtual Wallet account member, you will now find all of your tools at the bottom of each of the individual pages of your Spend, Reserve, and Growth accounts.
For example, you must click your Spend account and then scroll to the bottom of the page to access features like your Money Bar or Calendar. You must click your Reserve account and scroll to the bottom of the page to find your Savings Goals or Savings Rules. The tools themselves must be clicked and a drop down menu will appear revealing limited information. You will need to click the “View More” option to get the tool’s full features. This makes tools like Savings Goals difficult to work with as you will need to go back and enter both your Spend and Growth accounts separately to create goals for those specific accounts. The Virtual Wallet app allowed you manage your Savings Goals for all accounts on one page.
Overall, what used to feel like a financial management experience full of fun tools, now seems like a standard banking app with some extra features. The parts that made the mobile experience for Virtual Wallet seamless have been removed or stripped down. There is a significantly higher amount of navigation needed to achieve to same action that could be done on the Virtual Wallet app with a few clicks. The look of the app is comparable to what you would see with competitor banking apps, whereas the Virtual Wallet app had a truly unique interface and mimicked the full web browser experience.
My hope is that PNC will continue to improve the Virtual Wallet experience within the new PNC app in future updates. The sole reason I bank with PNC over other financial institutions is for their innovative online banking tools.
This service is temporarily—sorry—ALWAYS down
It doesn’t matter what device I use, whether it’s updated or state of the art tech, whether or not I enter the right credentials, whether I’m using the same device—
PNC app, ALWAYS is a waste of 20 minutes of nonsense that typically unfolds like this:
1) You open app to realize you’re locked out until you install yet another update. (Unfortunately old phone can’t handle updates, so you switch to work phone and update that for 3rd time this month).
2) uh oh! Service is temporarily not responding.
3) Try a third device (maybe it’s just mobile access?) and another password. Wrong.
5) Try your thumbprint. Wrong.
6) Check and confirm your original password. Try again.
7) Sorry! Your access has been suspended even though it was the correct password.
Now you are at a dead end... and can’t make educated financial decisions. Or are you?
8) You click the blue letters to “reset your password.”
9)Uh oh. You already used that one! You’ve already used all the passwords in your lifelong repertoire including all of your siblings AOL passwords from 1997.
Please pick a password that in no way resembles a previous password, or uses the English alphabet or contains any of the special characters that are easy to memorize.
So... you create something even more convoluted and update it in your password records AND EVEN click Save User ID.
Haaaaaaaaaa. That one is just funny. I still click it like a fool, knowing it never has and never will work.
Finally I give up and update my whole phone and try again the next day. And the next day.
I truly struggle to comprehend WHO penned these thousands of 5 star reviews. These cannot be real customers, this app has been trash since the dawn of apps. Its probably the same joker who invented the “save user ID” button and decided your phone user ID should be completely different from the online ID.
Decent App
PROS: It has all the features you would expect (balance/transaction/account info, mobile deposit, card controls, Zelle, transfers between PNC and external accounts, etc.), and, in my limited experience, they work reliably. WHERE IT COULD BE BETTER: It is so frustrating that I have to do two-factor authentication every time I open the app. All of my other financial apps can remember that this is my phone and don’t require me to do two-factor authentication after using Touch ID to log in (as long as I told the app to remember my device the first time I did the two-factor authentication). I wish this app worked that way. I also find it annoying that there are ads (or, at least, a link to a page of products PNC offers) on my accounts screen. I am already a customer, I know what services a bank offers, and I don’t need more ads in my life. (I wouldn’t be bothered if this link was a menu option, but it is a turn off when it’s right on the accounts screen). The interface also feels a little dated and disorganized. (The main menu, for example, has options located at the top right, top left, left side, and bottom, all in different visual styles. It seems like there must be a cleaner way to organize all of this. It also seems random that there is now a link to use Zelle on the accounts screen as Zelle already has it’s own option in the main menu. I also get the same couple of alerts at the top of my accounts screen over and over again. I wish I could acknowledge the alert and not see it again. It would just be nice to get a really clean and elegant interface that only shows the information a user really needs when they log on.) NON-APP SUGGESTION: If PNC eliminated the foreign transaction fee on the debit card, this bank would be just about perfect. (I like the other features of my account and have always received great customer service in person and on the phone.)
Mobile Deposit
Quick & Easy mobile check deposit. Not sure why PNC representatives didn’t suggest this earlier as a deposit option.
I keep wondering when, if ever, PNC is going to open a bank location in Grand Blanc, MI. Not all banking issues can be resolved by an ATM. Having to travel to Flushing, MI (20m & 15 miles) or Clio (25m & 20 miles) has finally resulted in my doing minimal banking with PNC. That and their refusal to resolve two other long-standing issues with a pre-paid debit card (an issue with AVIS/Budget, since July 4, now amounting to over $2000 on the card, which is not owed by me, and will NEVER be paid by me). Additionally a $200+ refund from The Guitar Center, which they have shown me an emailed copy of the refund transaction, but it has never shown up on any PNC statements. This is likely due to the fact that the card they transferred it back to was compromised and replaced, but it seems like provisions should be in place to allow returns to a compromised debit card that is associated with a checking account. Nevertheless it should not take nearly a year, multiple phone calls, and messages left to get a return phone call or an in-person appointment to get these matters resolved. Including a recent appointment that was rudely cancelled by a PNC Bank employee in Portage, MI who then proceeded to hand up on me, twice as I attempted to follow-up and question the reason for my cancelled appointment.
In the two years since I have lived in Grand Blanc six banks and credit unions have opened up new locations in Grand Blanc as has Aldi’s. But, PNC apparently still thinks Grsnd Blanc is undeserving of a bank location closer than 15-20 miles or 20-25minutes. Well, as long as your lack of interest in serving me with long-standing issues at hand, as well as continuing to ignore the community of Grand Blanc, with your lack of a location, you will cease to be my primary bank of choice.
useful app for a crooked bank run by corporate pirates
if you like getting your money stolen from a company you’ve entrusted to manage your funds, PNC is for you.
24 overdrafts in one calender year! spent over 12 hours on the phone trying to get my money back.
been with these crooks for over 5 years. last 2 years they've become extremely corrupt and greedy.
about the app? you can deposit checks in your account via your cell phone. Cool...except they dont clesr checks on non business days. put a check in friday night at 9:50? wont get your funds credited to your account until tuesday morning.
in the meantime, while PNC delays clearing your check, they will assess as many overdrafts as they can.
they will tell you that your account is overdrawn. so you go to the actual physical bank during your lunch break to deposit cash. your receipt will show a positive balance. then at 9:59 eastern time, they will decide to post transactions that overdraft your account. why does 9:59pm eastern time mattwr? because any funds you deposit after 10:00pm eastern time wont clear, thus allowing PNC to “assess the correct fee” to your account (ie - steal $36 under the overdraft charge).
honest to god the worse bank I’ve dealt with.
first 3 years good, but the last few years have been horrible.
stick around with this garbage company long enough, they will steal your money. When you call them out on their theft, they will rationalize their crooked ways. They will pretend to attempt to remove the charge, put you on hold, then inform you that - the computer is refusing to give you your money back...get outta here! this aint the terminator lady...robots aint calling the shots! if you wanna give me my money back, you know damned well that you can! its just the bank you work for would rather steal my $36 hours in a crooked underhanded manner than continue to do business with me.
bogus corrupt pirates always tryin to steal your money,
hope PNC goes out of business
Stay Away
From an app perspective, PNC is very buggy. The app randomly resets face id, among other things. I could name more bugs as well as missing features, but first let’s talk about the bank, that is, the service this app provides.
PNC bought out BBVA for those that aren’t aware. BBVA owned Simple, an amazing little bank with no fees of any kind and an amazing app/web platform, including overdraft fees. Once PNC made an offer to BBVA, BBVA shut down Simple and quickly forced everyone onto BBVA. BBVA had fees and a poor app/website presence. Before Simple users could even catch their collective breath, PNC took over and again migrated customers. This time Debit card numbers, limits, routing numbers, and account numbers were forcibly changed. PNC has caused severe disruption to many of us. My rent ended up being late thanks to PNC, for example, and there are a few of us talking to lawyers about possibly filing a class action lawsuit.
That actually leads us once again back to the app. The PNC app is far clunkier, far slower, and far more difficult to use.
If you aren’t a Simple customer and are looking to open a new account with PNC, please note that PNC does not take the security of your account seriously. MFA apps such as Google Authenticator are not supported. They implement MFA via SMS, which is trivial to defeat. To make things worse, they block VOIP numbers from MFA, including Google Voice, which is far more secure than traditional SMS. (also, they use “security questions“ in absent of SMS, which is even less secure.)
PNC literally pushes you into scenarios which have known security flaws. SMS is not secure. Yet PNC makes you use it for everything. I don’t say this as a customer, I say this as a developer with more than a decade of experience that is intimately familiar with infosec. The fact they block VOIP providers, who are slightly more secure than a cell phone, speaks volumes.
I personally am switching to Ally soon. PNC shows that they don’t care about dragging customers through the mud.
HATE this feature
OK so the app has a feature where you can text support if you have any problems when I had somebody committing fraud technically I still do as I’m writing this first person I talk to was 100% helpful they help me get my money back everything they told me that my new card was shipping and because of fraud I wouldn’t be charged a shipping fee for my new card and they should’ve offered me a new account at this very moment all my money almost all my money has been taken out again and I have talked to eight different people and they keep telling me file a dispute the dispute takes a very very long time and the first person I talk to told me to come back to text support and if I had any problems let them know they would help take care of it every single person I talk to said was always File a dispute at this point I was very agitated because I tried it I couldn’t find it I couldn’t find customer support on the app and it was very confusing and I need this money for something very important so technically that means I can’t be waiting months upon months so I’m going into a branch which is taking time out of my day when the people on this support feature should be helping me which they’re not if you just won’t be able to file a dispute you need to take this feature off and just put a step-by-step or tell them to go into a branch it’s very unnecessary and all it’s gonna do is upset people and since this is the second time that they have breached my account and these people don’t want to help me and I have to take time out of my day after I get my money back I am withdrawing all my money and banking somewhere else somewhere that has fraud protection set up this company has nothing of the sort when I had five different withdrawals the first time of the same amount of money I did not get a call I did not get a text I did not get a alert from my banking app my card or my account wasn’t immediately frozen I had to contact somebody I find that very unprofessional they should have some type of fraud system set up
PNC APP and Overall -
Actually liked old version set up better but I am used to this newer version and overall happy with PNC mobile app. I do recommend to anyone with PNC banking. Easy on the go monitoring without having to utilize PC, calling, going to ATM/bank to check. Check deposit is so handy and convenient, so a 5 star rating alone for that. 4 Star overall bc it is great and convenience of it is wonderful but as mentioned, prior version seemed more simple and user friendly without all the silly animations screen switching and so on. Simpler is often times better. I also really enjoy seeing my activity bc I can spot anything abnormal quickly and make adjustments to account funds as necessary.
Three recommendations:
1. I love the point system and offers. I often check prior to purchasing for points alone. Would really like to see more offers come through, especially a way purchase habits and history could be utilized to receive more offers based on places and designed personal use and of interest in order to earn, maximize my points based on personalized purchasing habits. I would use more often instead of using other payment methods based on their incentives and so on if that makes sense.
2. I would really like to see the app updated to utilize iPhone X facial recognition. The fingerprint was nice but is no longer an option for iPhone X users.
3. A live chat professional option would be so great. Calling, redirecting, hold times then not getting ahold of the right person to go through all that again is just aggravating. However, to PNC credit, this aggravation is minor compared to other companies like AT&T, TWC/Spectrum and various other places that I’m certain anyone reading my commentary can relate too.
Thanks for reviewing and hope my honest review is useful for customers and PNC corporation alike; PNC is certainly better overall than several other banking places I have used for personal financial institutions that I have utilized in the 20 plus years I have had banking accounts; and again, this APP is a MUST HAVE for customers if possible. Thank you!
It has Never Let Me Down
If you are a PNC customer and haven’t been using the app, what are you waiting for? An engraved invitation (as my mom used to say)? Seriously, I have done almost every kind of transaction possible at one time or another, using the bank’s mobile app and never, not once has ANYTHING ever gone wrong. That is quite impressive if you think about it. Idk how long I have been using it but I can say I’ve been with PNC over 10 years now and have been using the app pretty much since I heard about it. You can do everything except get cash from your phone. But, although I’ve never tried it and I am not sure why anyone would do this, I imagine if you wanted to take money out of your account, you could probably find a way to have a check mailed to you or you can transfer money to another out of PNC account usin the transfer function. So, I think it’s pretty safe to say if you want to do a banking transaction, with the exception of the cash (as I said) you can do it on the app. How is that for convenience?!? I have even moved from one part of the country to another and there hasn’t been a single issue with seeing the changes in my account transfer to the app and having everything continue to work without a glitch. Not that I would expect to.
I guess what I am saying but maybe going about it in a round about way .. if you bank with PNC, you should definitely be using the app. It is convenient. It is efficient and fast. And I have not had it crash or throw me out once. I can’t think of any other app about which I could say that. Whether it is a game or a store’s app, no matter the type, I have had many issues across the board. Except with this app.
So go ahead—try it—you’ve got nothing to lose and everything to gain.
(Btw, I don’t work for PNC, nor does any member of my family nor any friend. They didn’t pay me for my review. And the only reason I am putting this stuff in at the end is because I could see someone thinking it was a planted review since I had nothing bad to say. I assure you, it isn’t planted and I am just like you. A regular banking customer.).
When it's most important
Banking apps can single handed it be one of the most important that we have on our phones. Honestly, I don't need them to do an awful lot and I think I'm being awfully generous with s 3 star rating of this one.
I need to be able to essentially check my balance, check charges, and be able to login to my account and deposit checks. I need the BASICS. I literally CANT AFFORD the app to totally crash or crap out to the point that I can't deposit a simple check, ever! And especially on the weekend! However, here I am. Unable to even login to either of my TWO accounts that I hold with PNC. So now, I am at a stalemate with my own money and incredibly inconvenienced by the inexcusable malfunction of the PNC app. Now, I am unable to deposit an important check in a situation that I can't make it to a bank, let alone the fact that it is Sunday. These kind of mishaps literally CANT happen! Anyone knows the importance of being able to rely on their bank and in this day and age, regardless of how "spoiled" some may claim we have become from technology, the bottom line is that this is the reality of the situation and the facts of expectations. The inconvenience and seriousness of not being able to rely on technology that other banks have perfected years ago is unacceptable! I have no idea what I'm going to do to make up time I don't have now because a service I have grown accustomed to and expect just stops working at a time that nobody is around to fix it! Great!
I also use Chase bank for two other accounts and while there are reasons I chose to go with PNC for my most important accounts for other specific reasons, their technological advancements, expectations, and overall quality is night and day compared to this! I would never be dealing with a nightmarish technological failure like this under any circumstances and I honestly have no idea what I'm going to do after EXPECTING to be able to make a simple online deposit through what should at very least be reliable enough to access my account. Btw, I can't even access either of my accounts on any level with the current errors occurring with the PNC bank app. Beyond frustrating!
Borderline scam tactics employed
PNV enforced payment through their PNC app and Online Banking System a few months back. They did send notice of this several times, then negated any previous recurring payments set up via Bank Of America, etc. This would have normally been a non issue, if the app worked. The app will not let you set up recurring payments without logging in via desktop. This does NOT follow the mobile-first design approach in software/web dev. Furthermore, not only did they intentionally design the site to not be mobile first, they force the user down a path that increases the probability of incurring late fees by not allowing you to configure recurring payments easily. There is only a “One-Time Only” option if you don’t pay before the 1st, making you go in a 2nd time, via the desktop only, to set it up for “Monthly”. This is poor UX design, why would they force a User to log in twice on 2 separate days to set up payments? It should be able to be done during same session to save the user time. Seems like borderline scam behavior to me. Changing an app to take away ease of payments, when you are a bank whose primary role is to facilitate them. We need laws to protect consumers against these sleazy covert design practices that hurt the customers. I also as a customer don't want to be forced to have a mortgage with this company, we need the ability to change mortgage providers easily, just like we can switch cell phone providers. Part of being a consumer is the ability to have choices, mortgage providers should not be monopolies. This is absurd. I called PNC to get this resolved, 3 service reps later and they couldn’t set it up for me. I have to wait for One-Time Only to change to Monthly, since they negated my autopayments with BoA, don’t allow it to be configured via mobile app, don’t give you an option until after payment is made to setup recurring payments, and won’t change it during a phone call. This seems to be the intent, to keep you off recurring payments to increase your likelihood of making a late payment since recurring payments aren’t easily configured. I don’t know why else the most common use case for a bank i.e. making/accepting payments would be this difficult. Don’t bank with PNC, thats the lesson.
The Virtual Wallet app was far superior
I’ve had the virtual wallet app ever since I started banking with PNC about 5 years ago. That app had a great UI, was intuitive with the way people use their accounts, and had a really easy “snapshot” view of everything happening on the main login page, allowing you to manage the Spend/Save/Growth accounts together, rather than having to click into each account to look at calendars or make transfers.
I was forced to switch to the regular PNC app a few weeks ago when they stopped supporting the Virtual Wallet app and my online experience has dwindled greatly.
Main reasons:
1. Having hamburger menus on the top left of the screen is really outdated UI design. People’s phones are larger than their hands now - it’s a total inconvenience to have to use 2 hands just to hit the menu button to transfer between accounts, deposit, bill pay, etc. If you must continue with a hamburger menu, at least move it to the right side of the screen so that people have the option to still use the app one handed? I don’t even have a big phone. Just a standard size iPhone XS.
2. Not being able to see the calendar of which bills and transfers are going in and out of each account ALL TOGETHER is a major frustration. There’s no reason why that feature needs to be split up into each separate account’s menu. It takes more work, and then separate hand written notes to achieve the same goal. Might as well be on my desktop computer if I have to go through all that just to see what’s coming out of which account at what time.
3. Again, each account doesn’t need to have it’s own separate menu inside of it for transfers, bill pay, etc. If it was just an overall app menu including those items at the bottom of the screen (like it was in the virtual wallet app) that would save steps for the user, and also maintain ~some form of consistency~ between menus within the app itself.
The only positive I’ll give this app compared to the Virtual Wallet, is that it makes it easier to turn on rewards deals for your debit/credit cards. But I’d remove that feature 10x over if it meant that I could quickly manage my accounts again with an app that has intuitive UI. Not sure what their reasoning was for getting rid of the other app, but it was a poor choice to say the least. Especially for Virtual Wallet customers who got those kinds of accounts solely BECAUSE they were so easy to manage online.
Current issues with bill pay
Monday, 26APR2021
Keep getting “This service is temporarily unavailable” when trying to add a payee. I try and try and try and it just continues.
1. If the service is truly unavailable, tell me before I enter all the payee information OR save the entered information for later so I don’t have to re-enter it.
2. Tell the phone support guys to ask what platform and version of the app I’m using before telling me to delete & re-install it. I’ve had the current version for 3 weeks, and I successfully added a payee a couple days ago. Delete/re-install is overkill and unnecessary.
3. Is there perhaps an issue with adding multiple payees within just a few days? Is service unavailable because the first ‘add’ is queued, awaiting verification, and somehow preventing another ‘add’? Just spit-ballin’ . . .
Same-day update:
I was able to add my payee at pnc.com, though not without battling what y’all think are acceptable characters in a payee name. Specifically, I couldn’t use “Jack’s Plumbing” because of the apostrophe; I had to settle for “Jacks Plumbing”. At least the website told me not to use special characters. Now wondering if ‘Add payee” in the app is just missing the appropriate edit/warning.
By the way, ‘add payee’ on the website required an account number, so I had to make one up. The app has no such requirement.
Monday, 30DEC2019
C’mon guys, up your coding game.
I made a ‘remote deposit’ using the app and got the following as part of the ‘deposit successful’ response:
“The funds you deposited will be available Thursday December 31.”
A screen-shot is available.
Early December :
Version 4.13 has apparently removed the ability to put a memo or note on a check issued through bill pay. If this was intentional, why? If not, please correct the omission. When some payees don’t cash a check for weeks, the note helps me keep track.
Also, I’ve had - several times, several app versions - a problem with payments through bill pay simply disappearing. Granted, some had no confirmation number, but I still got the ‘your payment has been scheduled’ message. But also, some with the message and a confirmation number also disappeared.
And it continues with 4.13. I made a payment, got the ‘payment scheduled’ message and got a confirmation number, but the payment still disappeared.
For now, I will screen-shot all payments and keep track of disappearances. If a developer would like to talk or see the screen shots, let me know.
A new low
I wish to share my experience dealing with PNC Mobile, phone and Online Banking services one evening a week or so ago, in the hope that many apparent oversights with these services will be corrected.
My experience started with my trying to use the PNC Mobile app in order to deposit my PNC VISA Rewards check to my PNC checking account. The check was placed on the same dark surface and under the same well-lit conditions that I have always used in my several years of using the app. I tried to deposit the check six or seven times, using the app both on my phone and on my tablet. Each time, the app told me that the photo was not clear enough to deposit.
I went to PNC Online Banking and used chat to get help. Several times, I opened a session with an agent but was cut off before I could even enter a description of my issue. The premature time out seems sometimes to be a matter of the chat session itself. Other times, it seems to be a matter of the general PNC Online Banking session. Apparently, activity in the chat window does not count as activity in the PNC Online Banking session, and the whole session times out. Either way, the chat was disconnected and I had to start again, multiple times.
I finally got a session to last long enough to be told that deleting the app and reinstalling it might help. I did. No luck.
Having no success depositing a hardcopy check, in another chat session I asked whether the PNC Rewards dollars could be electronically transferred directly to my PNC checking account. I was told yes and asked for the last four digits of my checking account. Believing that I could get that info from the accounts tab of PNC Online Banking, I clicked the tab, which refreshed the page and closed my chat session.
I then tried to phone. The automated phone system was no help at all.
I returned to a chat session and asked for an E-mail address to use and was directed to submit my message through the secure message center - hence this message.
Why would the Mobile app not accept a check now when I have used this method, under the same lighting conditions, several times over the last few years, especially as it was a PNC-issued check? Granted, this check was laser printed from a PDF of my VISA statement because PNC no longer postal-mails me a statement, but it was clearly printed, and I had successfully deposited laser-printed checks before. If the Mobile app does not accept laser-printed checks, and PNC no longer mails me a hardcopy check, then how does PNC expect me to deposit my Rewards dollars into my checking account? More basic, why deal with hardcopy at all? Why not just allow me to electronically transfer my Rewards dollars into my checking account via PNC Online Banking?
On a side but perhaps related note - Over the years I have used several versions of the PNC Mobile app and have found each update to be less reliable, less well-featured, and more disintegrated looking than the one before. The images, fonts and layout of the version 4.7 represent a new low. The arbitrary changes among multiple fonts, font styles, case schemes, colors and other graphic elements form a visual chaos. Adding animated visuals is even more egregious when graphics basics are not done well. I find the offers especially intrusive and unwelcome. I just wish to see my account information, not advertisements. The ironic thing is that previous versions of the Mobile app were cleaner and more straightforward than the current version. I find myself losing confidence in the app when it focusses on visual changes that actually make the it look worse while also losing an essential function such as being able to make a deposit.
Perhaps the last insult was when I first tried to submit this message. The message center informed me that I could not use common characters in my message, so I spent another 45 minutes rewriting this very message. If only the chat agent has just given me an E-mail contact address as I asked.
Overall, my several interactions with PNC Mobile, phone and Online Banking services have been a frustrating, time-wasting and unsuccessful experience. Several hours later I still did not know how to do what I started out to do: deposit my check online. Why does PNC throw up so many roadblocks to working with PNC? I wasted several hours that evening trying to work with PNC.
At the end of the evening I posted my story to the PNC Facebook page and pleaded for someone to communicate with me, in writing and in a medium where I will not be cut off and will not be restricted by technicalities like secured characters. While someone replied to my post with sycophantic apologies for my bad experiences, contrary to my request, they instructed me to phone PNC. Nobody, absolutely nobody from PNC responded with any practical help.
Finally, on an off chance, today I tried again to make my deposit, and I succeeded.
PNC seems not to have its technology and customer services together and is too big to deal with. Given how poorly PNC has performed for me overall, I’m considering leaving PNC and recommending that people not use PNC.
I will be most interested if anyone follows up, personally and in writing, as I had asked, or if this message will reinforce my impression.

PNC bank scam/fraud
I recently contacted PNC Bank, President/CEO Bill Demchak Office concerning an online PNC Bank Scam/Fraud in the amount of $700,000. PNC Bank response was: 1.) I was responsible for the Scam/Fraud 2.) PNC Bank refused to apologize for the Scam/Fraud 3.) PNC Bank refused to acknowledge that someone at the bank knew intimately about my checking and saving...
Read full review of PNC Mobile BankingBusiness Banking with them is DREADFUL!
I run a small business and opened an account with them when I first went into business. Anything that I needed done was always referred to a branch. I spent minimum 45 minutes at the branch every time I had to go. They were never able to help me over the phone. They were rude every single time. Absolute worst bank I’ve ever had. Do yourself a favor and go to a bank that they appreciate you at. I chose Citizens and the only thing I regret is not choosing them from the very beginning.
To sum it up, if you want to be treated like trash and have to go to a branch for every single issue, then this is the bank for you.
For normal people, I would highly suggest going to citizens.
This is not a bad review because of one specific occasion. This is a bad review because of every occasion I had to deal with them, they dropped the ball. Although I will say, every time I went to a branch they were able to do what I needed done, but I spent hours upon hours there for stupid things like trying to get my daily mobile deposit raised or something as simple as asking them for my account number because I had misplaced it and it wasn’t online and they couldn’t help me over the phone even though I verified my identity.
PNC desperately needs electronic correspondence support
I’m apart of the BBVA to PNC buyout crowd (and originally SIMPLE to BBVA). First, the reason I decided to move to another bank was simply that PNC checking isn’t truly free by itself and it’s just not for me (they require a minimum balance and will charge you fees if you do not meet that minimum).
Second, trying to simply close this account was absolutely PAINFUL. Why do they not have electronic correspondence? I called their customer support phone number on 4 separate occasions, kept getting forwarded, or waited for someone to simply pick up. I wasted a total of 2 hours of my life to simply get this account closed out only to realize the department I needed operates on East coast time.
Any financial institution in this day and age needs to have electronic correspondence for simple tasks. Having a customer support email is basic. Having an online customer support messaging system or chat would be exceptionally helpful. Using Twitter as your only means of helping your customers online strikes me as odd for a Large financial institution.
PRO TIP if you’re trying to close your account, use this PNC number and dial before 2pm PST: [protected].
Hopefully this review saves someone 2 extra hours of their life.

Y’all stole from me
If I could give a negative star I would . I had a check deposited back in August or September . Can’t really remember exactly. But as soon as it was deposited , pnc placed my check on hold and needed to review thought nothing it but when weeks went by and still no money I called . They told me my check was on hold for suspicious activity . Now I’ve been with simple , that’s who I had started out with no problems but as soon as the switch over . Problems began . So fast forward I let it go , decided to just forget about it and make my money as usual . Randomly check got approved I didn’t notice until I started to get email transactions from the account . So I started using MY MONEY . And when it was gone they took the whole check back putting my account in the negative for “fraud” when they approved it in the first place . Then after that I guess they realized their second mistake (first being placing my check on hold ) they placed it back taking my account out of a big negative balance only leaving me with -11.60 . Then they closed my account without my knowledge after doing all of that . So I don’t recommend this bank to anyone. Go to chase or Wells Fargo or something . Or maybe chime or current . Don’t use PNC
Mobile deposit has NEVER worked
Even this latest update gives me the same result.. When trying to approve the deposit it comes back and says the pictures are too fuzy and must be retaken. This is IN DIRECT SUNLIGHT ON A BLACK BACKGROUND. Same result indoors as well. I have an iPhone 4S with iOS 7.1.2 (won't do 8) and have 1.5 gigs of available memory. Further, it is impossible to line up all 4 corners of a business sized check in the viewer. Perhaps your coders have never seen a business sized check? (Top third of a standard 8.5x11 sheet of paper) This would make sense if your coders are still in middle school and you pay them in video game credits. Oh well... Now that I've moved the nearest PNC is an hour's drive away. Time to change banks...
UPDATE: Since PNC insisted on sending me an email about how "wonderful" mobile deposit is (with a link to a video showing the mobile deposit of a PERSONAL sized check), I must update this review. I've opened a Suntrust account, and installed their mobile banking app to this very same iPhone 4S which is still running iOS 7.1.2. Guess what? I was able to successfully use Suntrust's mobile deposit feature with a BUSINESS sized check on the very FIRST try. So don't tell me it's operator error or that I need iOS 8. It's your app. Period.
Terrible personal & business setup
Unlike the pnc website that has two separate websites for personal and business, unfortunately you only have one app for both. This app also appears to be several apps in one. Meaning there is no flow from accounts to paying bills. Your essentially loading another package of the app which you can see loading. It’s like several band aides put together in haste for this app.
In order to manage both your personal and business accounts you will need to fill out a couple of forms at the bank to “Link” these two accounts to the app. Once linked, you will be able to see all your business & virtual wallet personal accounts including credit cards.
However, if you want to pay a personal bill in this app, there is no way of accessing the payment from account as it is always set to a preferred business account. If you want to change the preferred account, you will need to fill out a form at your bank. Of course, the easiest and most practical way is to allow you to choose which account you want to pay from, like any other bank but PNC decided that a convoluted frustrating UX would be the best way.
So in summary, if you want to pay your personal bills with this app while linked to a business account... you cannot. You must use a browser and do it online. In a digital age, PNC is way behind. This app needs an overhaul.
Mobile Deposit Worthless
When I discovered PNC's mobile deposit feature I thought great! I'm presently staying with a friend out of state while my residence in Maryland is being repaired after Hurricane Sandy.
PNC doesn't have a branch within 100 miles from where my friend lives, so having this feature to deposit checks is a must for me. After 32 attempts to get my deposit to go through I gave up and started driving around trying to find anyone that would cash an out of state check.
That was an exercise in futility. I went back to my friend's house totally frustrated, wondering how I was going to cash this check so I would be able to eat. I said okay, I'm going to try this one more time. Apparently in my case the 33rd time was the charm.
It shouldn't take three hours to deposit a check. My friend who has Wells Fargo is able to get his mobile deposits to go through on the very first try every time.
My life is already stressful as it is right now, my bank shouldn't be one more thing on top of everything else.
After calling customer support to let them know about my issues with the mobile deposit feature, I reached a representative with a very sarcastic tone in her voice, who proceeded to blame me for my issues with the app.
The customer experience is obviously the last thing they concern themselves with. I'm very disappointed with PNC.
Last version had 5 stars
Before this update, I would suggest this to everyone but now I didn't like ANY, not a single one of the updates, except my security picture, I NEED the old version back. I can't see all my accounts at a glance, I have to scroll down, and I don't like that Everyone around me can see my balances because they're X-Large. I loved when the menu buttons were located at the bottom so I could do something with one tap. Now I have to find that stupid menu button just to get to my transfers button. Speaking of transfers, the old screen was perfect, it does not need to be SO LARGE when I put in my amount to transfer, and often times I needed to see the available amounts WHILE entering the amount to transfer. Also, it's not a good idea to have us hit a white submit button and then an identical white confirm button, I see there's a quick slide in with the new button, but all that changed was the word on the button, you could make it like before or change the color to orange, or make a big popup with the confirmation of what you're about to do... To me this app used to be near perfect and such an ease to use. I do not like the interface of this update at all. And I have no use for the graph that shows the high points and low points of my spending, everyone's account is up and down, you don't need to show us! It was cool to see once but then it was really pointless.
Zelle isn’t worth the trouble
When you send or receive cash through Zelle, you are charged fees of $30 which breaks down to $15 inbound and outbound transfer each. Plus, PNC charges a transaction fee for using your own money which isn’t fair. So if you request $50, count on $30+ in fees to be deducted as well. I hate PNC since they took over National City Bank. I never had any problems with National City. PNC on the other hand, blocks my account on a regular basis because they questioned certain transactions which are all legit and made by me. I’ve had to get 4 new debit cards this year alone because they said that it is for my own good they monitor and close my account. Screw them! Every transaction is legit, an automatic pYmetfor bills, purchases I make on Amazon and EBAY and I buy and invest in Bitcoin. It is a pain driving to the nearest branch that offers instant debit card service or else I’d have to wait ten business days for one to arrive in the mail. Also, I have to fight with them to refund overdraft fees when they block my account since autopay rejects. They don’t notify you they are going to block you so you can research it; they just d’obit! I’ve been with them 50+ years with all the mergers and name changes and this is how I get treated for loyalty? Don’t get me started in their non-English speaking customer service agents. Very frustrating. I hate you PNC with a passion!
Too glitchy
I like this app but there’s ALWAYS an issue. Every single week the app doesn’t work for one reason or another. Ive been trying to transfer money using Zelle for over TWO hours and I STILL cannot. Zelle is working fine but I can’t use their app because I have a PNC account linked. You are FORCED to use PNC’s glitchy app that almost never works. Im already concerned about using Zelle to transfer money and now I have to be worried about if its even going to work or if Im going to go through multiple times because of how terrible the PNC app is. I had to call PNC 2 different times tonight to get the account unlocked. Zelle locked me out for entering an incorrect pin number ONE time. It gave me one chance. The atm allows you more opportunities. Zelle punishing its users with extreme security measures because they allow fraudulent activity to occur on their platform and PNC is WRONG for continuing to partner with them. The representative unlocked Zelle and I ended up having to call back because there was a security lock on my transfers that I had NEVER been contacted about. PNC rep told me it had been there for months but no one from PNC ever reached out, I didn’t get a letter, or call. I don’t understand how its acceptable to have an issue with an account and these banks refuse to tell you until you need access to YOUR money. Its ridiculous and the app alone has made me want to close this account and switch banks.
Im surprised at you PNC
I am very very surprised. Its almost like PNC does not want us to use this app. Is it that you prefer for us to use Virtual Wallet (I don’t want that act), PNC Finder (why, there’s google maps), or PNC Total Insight? Does the tech team have to provide a new app every so often to prevent layoffs for inactivity? I surely hope not. I just want ONE (1) quality app that I can go to for viewing my DDA & Investments. I want a PNC Online Banking & Mobile app that uses case-sensitive passwords! Yes I will like Touch ID to be active but I am not going to give you less stars for that. Please however make passwords case sensitive. The layout of the app is not bad and I am not giving less stars for it, but please look at USAA, BofA, and Chase to get a better layout. Also banks like USAA and Navy Federal allow for a 4-digit pin to get into that app. Quick and Painless. If your not going to make the passwords case sensitive you might as well allow for 4-digit pins. I hate that I need 2 different apps to view my DDA and also my retirement account. In all there are 6 PNC apps for the retail side. Are they all being used? Virtual Wallet Im sure is getting used, plus this one that I am complaining about. Please PNC work on updating this app and a few others maybe, but please stop creating more apps. It is not helping me, and Im sure if you did a poll on clients wanting multiple apps vs 1 high quality app you will see others agree with me. Thank you.
PNC Mobile Pop Money - A Dangerous Option
I have been using this app for a while now, but never for transferring money. This was my first attempt at Pop Money from the PNC Mobile App and it was a disaster. I had setup my wife's contact details for Pop Money in PNC Online Banking Website and successfully transferred money to her once from web. I have also done the same for two other contacts and it has always been successful from web. Having used web on so many occasion, this time I decided to go the faster way doing a Pop Money transfer to my wife on PNC Mobile Banking App. As a courtesy, while adding the contact for recipient of this transaction, I did check the registered phone number and mail of my wife and it was correct. She also received the mail that money would arrive in her PNC account within three business days, but the money never arrived. Rather this money arrived in the PNC account of her room mate, whom she transfers money frequently from her own PNC account. I never setup the contact of my wife's room mate through any channel in PNC. Not sure how in the world this happened, but I was still saved from losing my money since I know the person who received it. I would surely have regretted using this app, had it ended up in someone else's account whom I don't know. I generally use the web for transfers and that has always got things done properly for me. I believe I would better stick to the web than using the mobile banking app. Better slow and steady, than fast and furious.
Automate your errors, they are more common than not
Hello,
I enjoy the PNC app and am a digital analyst and previous designer. I'd be looking into the following to improve your app for a quick win:
-automate your errors ; there is no reason why you should have an error thrown impeding deposit (reproduce by take picture of front of check, it loops you to front of check every time no matter if picture was a "success!")
- another error in the same experience: this is the problem too. No world should more than one error happen in a single session. This can be mitigated by communication how to fix or that the enemies system is down , frustrations happen; you should work to decrease them with messaging: all people want is to be in the know, hence knowledge is power.
- implement a changepoint analysis for x times the loops happen to indicate investigation. Don't do it manually it's a waste of time and most humans don't know what to look for that is most impactful anyway
- your voice of the consumer data should be analyzed holistically; your analyst shouldn't be making dashboards, they should be doing topical exploratory data analysis to find out top impact items. I think this is lost is most analysts as people don't know what to do with dashboards and they are usually measuring the wrong KPIs
- the ability to lock a card if lost is vital in this day in age; you are behind major companies such as capital one : to have a bank card you can lock if stolen through app would improve loyalty because no one likes to go through the hellacious call center debacle.
Good luck,
-
Up One Star For Touch ID
5/16 Update: Most every issue still exists, but hey, we finally have Touch ID. Now if they just work on making it look like an app that should exist in the year 2016.
4/16 Update: this app is essentially useless at this point. Its core functionality, as ugly as it may looks, works fine. Assuming you can get the app to open without crashing nearly immediately. Considering the majority of my banking is done with mobile banking, this represents a considerable issue.
1/16 Update: dropping down a star for the continued lack of innovation. No Touch ID, not formatted for larger screen iPhone, not compatible with apps like 1Password or LastPass, etc. Furthermore, I still want to see them implement the ability to redeem cash back or points rewards from within the app. Simple banking tasks remain easy, but I'd really like to see PNC step their game up with this app.
Update: still holding steady at 3 stars. The app itself is fine. It does what you need it to do. That said, I'd still love to be able to redeem my cash back from within the app. Also, Touch ID would be a much appreciated addition.
This is by far the best version of this app. I haven't had a single issue with the mobile deposit, the look of the app is much better. It just doesn't seem nearly as clumsy as previous versions have.
The biggest downside at this point is the lack of functionality as far as PNC Points or Cash Back programs are concerned. It would be great if I could view my points balance, redeem my points and activate cash back offers right from the phone.
WORST BANKING APP, EMPLOYEES GASLIGHT YOU!
Loan transfer from bbva. The due date is the 5th with 15 days grace period. If I pay on the 20th “it’s more than 15 days late”. I pay using their app, and it does “not post till the next business day”? I have unlawfully been charged late fees due to this, and NOBODY at PNC will acknowledge that this is daylight robbery. Looks like the employees are trained to lie to customers other than doing their actual jobs. I have received so many answers to this, from “system error “ the 1st time it happened, to “need to pay by 4 pm” (lies), to the “ 20th is more than 15 days late”- escalation department, to “it posted later than the 20th”- nothing on disclosures about time of day. I have taken screenshots of messages while paying-“PAYMENT WILL BE APPLIED ON THE DATE YOU CHOSE ABOVE”! SO why does it not post on the date I choose? By design so that they can apply the “late fees”? If this was an honest “system issue” , somebody would have corrected the situation. They give you different answers everyday. Absolutely the worst experience with PNC. No issues with BBVA. This is a bank that does care about doing legit business, only acted like a scavenger to me. STAY AWAY from them - you will thank me later. Employees have no clear explanation, and so I hear different versions of the “late fee”- proof that they designed the app to steal.
Update.
Apparently I got 6 late fees- 2 aware of- hard times- both were waived. Thanks. The associate only addressed those 2 in my complaint. What about the other 4? EVERY OTHER PAYMENT WAS MADE ON OR BEFORE THE 20th! Daylight robbery?
Bring calendar feature of Virtual Wallet
I’ve been with PNC for several years after moving and not finding a Chase Bank within a 50mile radius. Love the virtual wallet app with the features and the calendar to input payments and bills. Bring it to this app or bring back virtual wallet app. App seems very outdated compared to virtual wallet app.
The complaint has been investigated and resolved to the customer’s satisfaction.
Misleading Promises
Recently, I was notified in the PNC Virtual Wallet app that it would no longer be available and that I would need to download the regular PNC app to maintain access to my accounts. I was also notified not to worry because “all my favorite features in Virtual Wallet would be available in the regular PNC app.” This was misleading at best, outright false at worst. There are no graphs/charts to keep up with savings progress or goals, the budgeting section is a joke because you can’t even see what the transaction is to be able to assign it to a category, and the app as a whole is more confusing than Virtual Wallet. Would love to see these features fixed and added in the future!
The complaint has been investigated and resolved to the customer’s satisfaction.
PNC mobile always have issue login account every time have to reset PW with first attempt vs able to log in my other bank mobile account with out issue. Have to call to reset PW which sucks .
