Maddening bugs in local play
Don’t see a Developer Response on the bottom of this post? Don’t waste your money.
Sometimes, the app crashes immediately when you start a game in any mode. Local Games are the worst, though. Playing one is like walking into a field of land mines—you never know when or why the app will crash.
Beyond all the crashing: If one player leaves the app during play, even for a second, the app has trouble noticing when they return to the game. When that happens, you wait and wait. You leave again. Come back. Close the app entirely. Come back. Did that kill your game? Maybe. Maybe not. Should you “Please wait” another ten minutes or roll the dice on your evening?
When it actually does register that both players are present again, it forgets whose turn it was and locks up indefinitely for one player.
(We’re playing with two up-to-date iPhone 11’s over the same Wi-Fi and Bluetooth.)
If these bugs had been fixed within the last few years and/or it were easy to submit bugs, this would be a five-star review. The gameplay is fun and the expansions are great. For that reason, I can’t give it one star. I really want it to be as fun as it could be.
However, the Local Game bugs so consistently crush our fun—and it’s so convoluted to figure out where to go for support—that we’re fixing to check out for good.
Will I miss it? Yeah. But our tabletop version is waiting with open arms.
Was my favorite, now unplayable local but ok solo
Just revised my review from 1 star to 3 for new version because solo mode is still good and the bugs are not insurmountable. So...1 for local, 5 for solo, and the other modes I don't play so can't comment. Will happily return to original 5-star review if you bring AI bots back for local play. I hope to see more maps, too! India is a great addition.
I was so excited to see the release notes for the new version - new map, multiplatform, universal version for iPhone and iPad. Unfortunately, I updated all of our devices before seeing the new version. It is a complete disappointment. TTR was our favorite app, one of the few board games that could be played locally equally well with as few as two players supplemented by AIs (our usual mode), yet expandable to more when friends visited. Now we no longer play at all - it isn't any fun without mixing in the AIs to allow sharing of paths. The game doesn't even look as good as before, and it is also buggy. One star for destroying a great implementation of our favorite game. I'd rate this version zero stars if I could.
My Original version review:
Great Implementation (5 stars)
I play Ticket to Ride on the PC and the Xbox 360, too, but the iPad version is my favorite implementation. I love all the maps, the interface, and the variety of methods to play alone or with others. Great job! Please add more maps. Can't wait to see the iPad implementation of Africa, Germany, India, Nordic!
Best boardgame on earth now available on iPad - BUT
Being a huge fan of TTR in boardgame format, it was a no-brainer for me to purchase TTR and all the additional maps available through in-app purchase. Naturally, the playing experience is different.
I find that there are several UI shortcomings on the iPad version and some can really detract from the game:
(1) There is no pinch-and-zoom feature for the playing board. Some fonts and indicators are quite tiny and difficult to read.
(2) It is cumbersome to look through your destination tickets. A feature should be added that would expand out all the tickets so you can see all of them at the same time.
(3) There is no undo feature.
(4) You cannot save a game in progress.
(5) Once train cars are placed on a route, you can't see what the original color of the route was. A feature should be added where you could lift up the car during a long press and see the underlying route color.
The graphics and sounds are smartly done and actually enhance the game. When a game is over, the scores of each of the players is tallied in a very informative manner, and you can go back and look at the board as it looked at the end of game, including what destination tickets were played by which player. The computer opponents are competitve with different strategies employed.
Though really in need of UI improvements as listed above, the playablity of the game is outstanding. I still recommend purchasing TTR, and look forward to additional expansions being added.
Nasty chat spamming is out of control! Good game though
The train game is great especially in multiplayer mode. I have regular friends online that I play with. Have been playing for a few years now and enjoy it. You get 4.5 stars for the game play! There are glitches now and then, but for the most part the game works. However, there has been so much nasty chat spamming in the lobby and it seems to of increased lately. Mostly someone who creates an account and doesn’t play the game, but then sends very nasty chat to all in the lobby. This has been going on for quite awhile and I don’t see the developers doing anything to resolve it. If this is a family friendly game, then this must be addressed and soon. The in-chat reporting system doesn’t seem to work. I was told that feature doesn’t work since Asmodee took over. I was also told that the only way to get your attention is to write a review, so here it is. My suggestion is that you disallow the use of chat until at least 50 games are played. That will give an incentive for users to be nice in chat or be reported and lose the account. That will eliminate the majority of the nasty chat in the lobby. You can ban an account, but they just set up a different one and do the same thing over and over. 50 game minimum to use chat in the lobby is an easy thing to implement. I’m a developer and know this, so please for all the families and kids who play this game, get that implemented ASAP! I will then and only then come back and give you a full 5 star rating. Please do this!
Gets boring
The game is, for the most part, fun. I own the bored game version and play it frequently, which is why i purchased the app in the first place. For the price though I expected a better game than what it is. The bots when playing in solo mode are completely useless; it’s not any challenge to win whatsoever. The bots rarely ever make more than two tickets, which is in no way realistic. Their moves are also sporadic and make no sense half of the time, making it more frustrating when they randomly place in a spot that blocks a path you need. It changes the game dynamic from one based on skill to one of random chance.
Online mode is scarcely better. It takes several minutes to find an appointment at times, which wouldn’t be a problem if you could exit the game and wait until someone is found. You end up waiting with this screen until someone picks on your game. If you want to pick someone else’s game instead of making your own, you need to have a certain level of “karma” that the created chooses. When almost all creators choose the karma level restriction, how are you supposed to build karma? You can’t even play a game!
There also is no option to unlock other maps through gameplay. Almost everything requires in-app purchases and none of them are cheap. The quality honestly doesn’t match the price. If they wanted to make it better, they should at least add difficulty to the bots or create a form of levels with varying maps. The game just gets boring after a certain amount of plays.
Close, but not as good as the online version
I have been playing TTR through DoW's downloadable app for a long time, and this was the first thing I bought for my new iPad. It looks beautiful, but the gameplay is not as good as the DoW version. First up is the way you are put into games. You hit play and then wait to be seated. This makes it impossible to play with friends, and brings me to my next issue.
Blocking players, or lack thereof. There are a few players who I prefer not to play with. In the DoW version, you can block them, and they will never see your games again. Out of sight, out of mind. This feature does not exist on the iPad version, and I have found myself playing against the same jerk a few times.
Additionally, the chat is all weird and stunted. If you type more than a few words, it is cut off, and there is no chat log to allow you go back and read what was said.
My last gripe is a small one, but in addition to having 4 versions of the board game in my home (USA, Europe, Nordic Countries, 1910), I own every map that was available through the DoW app (USA, Europe, Switzerland, 1910, MegaGame). And now I am expected to buy them again for iPad? There ought to be a way to at least discount DoW users for maps they have already purchased. I'll likely buy Asia, since I don't have it elsewhere, but I think I'll continue to use th DoW app to play the other maps. It's just a better experience.
If I had never played the DoW version, I'd likely give this one 5-stars, buit I have. And I know how much better it can be.
Nag screen WAS replaced by an even more annoying banner screen
REMOVED by new update: Previous update placing huge banner across the front of the board deleted. Apparently they change major game play features then use us to play test after. The issue the update introduced left below for historical reasons.
Please, please never ever slow down game play with an update. It feels like you are stealing form our life when you do. If you have to put one in, note that we have a button already with three different speeds. Never ever implement a slowdown on someone playing at max speed.
1. This banner stays for about 4 seconds unless you click on it. Just what we don’t need, something else to click on and slow our game down. I know it is my turn. I want to do it a quickly as possible. The solution is worse than the original problem. This screen may make sense in pass and play but ZERO sense in
The game industry is pretty mature. This is a flagship board game. Treat it as such.
Addendum: I played it 15-20 more times just to make sure I had not changed my mind. The fact that you can place a route when unseen, still covered by the player turn banner, is very bad. The more I played, the more annoyed at this seemingly DELIBERATE slowdown of game play. When playing solo, you feel the tempo and know when it is your turn. This is just a lazy and crappy solution to replace the continuous nag banners every time you took more 3 seconds to choose. You wanted speed then, now you slow the game on purpose.
I will no longer play this until it is fixed. I deem this game unplayable as a solo game.
Decent Game, SOO Many Quirks
12/24
I'm only playing solo (vs. computer players) at the moment so I can't speak for the rest of the game, but here's a list of bugs that need fixing:
1. When you end the game (versus a computer player ending it), the game freezes & eventually when you try to get back in it after force quitting the game, your solo game is lost.
Additional requests to make it a 5-star ⭐️⭐️⭐️ game:
1. Total # of cards in hand
2. Optional warning at a specified number of trains left by an opponent (set to 2 to have the behavior as it is now).
3. Better zooming options
4. In the solo game for say a set amount of time (3 seconds would do) or in a multiplayer game before the next person's turn, the option to undo the move you just made because it dropped on the wrong tracks. Maybe limit this to 3x a game but sometimes it can mess your whole route up when this happens.
5. Have the option to select a ticket with one click and then the available routes you can play with that color ticket plus your wilds are highlighted & the rest of the board is darkened. This would allow for easier strategy
6. Have the ability to put the game in colorblind mode. I don't know what colors to say but look at the game "Two Dots" & its colorblind mode & you'll see what I'm saying.
I'm sure there are more & while I really like the game, there's so much room for improvement on the app it's crazy.
PS- I only bought the app because it was on sale for $2.99 but until all left the bugs people are talking about are fixed I wouldn't pay normal price for it.
Great Single Player; Lack of Local Multiplayer and Annoying Sound Design
I'm a big fan of Ticket To Ride. The board game has replaced Monopoly as our go-to family game night game of choice. I was excited to give the iPad version a try.
Overall: Well done and worth the price. Fun single player, and a great conversion of a loved board game. Fans won't be disappointed with the notable and glaring exception of a lack of local multiplayer.
The Good:
Faithful representation of the board game; fans won't be disappointed
Great art; glad to see one of the best things about the board version carried over
Quick gameplay; a typical single-player game comes in at about 10 mins
Overall, very well done and highly enjoyable single player
The Bad:
Lack of table-top mode or even pass-around local multiplayer means families can't play together; there simply is no way to do this. I'm baffled by the decision to ship without this ability since it is the essence of the board game experience.
The Ugly:
Oh my god. The sound design couldn't be more annoying. Between the cheesy voice-overs in the menu screens that can't be turned off and the attention-grabbing train whistle that goes off every few seconds in a fast single-player game, I have to mute my iPad every time I play the game. All it would take to fix this are expanded options in the settings menu screen that provide the ability to turn off voice overs and the replacement of a much more subtle bell or chime that signals the end of a turn.
Conclusion: Buy if you're a fan of the game. Buy if you're looking for a fast, fun single-player experience. Pass if you're looking for a family activity.
Oh my poor wallet
This guys are killing me. I saw Ticket to Ride pocket for 99 cents. Having been to GenCon many years in a row, I've seen TtR all over the place but never tried it out. Now here was TtR pocket for a measly buck, so what the heck.
Ouch...because I loved it. So I bought the iPad version. And look...Expansions! Bought them. Oh...they make another game called Small World? Looks interesting...bought it. Now my kids want to learn to play TtR, and even though we all have iOS devices, it seemed more fun to do it with the real thing, so I bought the board game. In the meantime, I've become addicted to Small World and have convinced my wife to buy that (with almost all of the expansions) for me for Christmas. So thanks to a silly little 99 cent app, I'm now out a couple of hundred bucks.
LOL. OK, so maybe, to be fair, for all that money I've now spent, my family and I (and hopefully quite a few of my friends) are going to have years of enjoyment so maybe it's not all that unfair after all. But still, I thought I was only paying a buck originally!
In all seriousness, Days of Wonder has produced some very high quality and excellently designed games. TtR was also easy enough to learn that my even my 4th grade son picked it up very quickly on the first play through. My kids can't wait for me to get my copy of Small World come Christmas morning. I have a feeling some of their new toys are going to get neglected that day
My hats off to all the folks involved in getting the original games to print and the iOS copies up. You have all done an amazing job and provided the world with some excellent entertainment.
Some issues
First, I am always very upset when I find ‘isms in a game. It is appalling that out of five game avatar choices there is only one (white) woman and the rest are white men. In this day and age, seriously?! You couldn't do better? I will not be spending money to buy any of the boards while the company shows a complete disregard for representation. I get that you are setting this during a particular time period, but there were people of multiple races and both sexes traveling by train during that time period. I have daughters, they should be able to chose from a selection of female avatars, and there absolutely should be options for POC.
Second, I tried the solo option, but I am not at all interested in a game of cutthroat. The bots are programmed to deliberately block players from achieving their goals. The bot I was playing had two of the three possible routes to Los Angeles. As soon as I turned to take the middle route, which required two track placements, the bot took the other. It had all three routes, and the third route it placed led nowhere, since I had already placed my track in the other half. Nope! I am not interested in playing a game of deliberately inhibiting other players. You need an option for cutthroat or simple strategizing. I have children, and I buy mostly co-operative games because I am trying to teach my children that winning is not about destroying others but is about working towards your goals. I know there are people who enjoy cutthroat, but make an option for those who do not.
A number of people had recommended this game to me. I thought it would be a fun addition to our game library, but not as it is.
Online Ranked Multiplayer - But disconnects alot
Thank you so much! Finally we have a worthy Eurogame that has algorithm based online multiplayer game rankings. This is a great achievement and sets the bar high. The game layout and design is perfectly implemented. My favorite game right now! I havent even tried single player and dont care about that at all, or pass and play either (which doesnt exist anyway which is fine). After playing a bit though I have encountered disconnects and difficulty and delays getting back into the game I was in. My internet did not go down at all - happens about 1 one three games - perhaps you could have a network status bar or connection status and show when folks are disconnected, trying to reconnect, and have some turn timers and connection grace periods. Also when you log back in if it crashes the game you were in earlier should be prominently displayed so you can try to connect manually right away, rather than wait for a message that pops up. Its not clear to me also how quitters are penalized - maybe call it a quit if you play less than 60% of the game and you get extra penalization for that, but are granted one quit a month with no penalty. If you play game you only earn ranking prorated for the time you actually played the game, assuming it at least 60% and not a quit. Non quitters earn extra points if they finish the game. There needs to be additioanl coding to implement a fair system for honest reconnecting due to a unforeseen network failure - it happens, but I think there might be some bug issues as well here. Look at the asobrain game for online explorers implementation for a good model of how to do quitting ranking and reconnect coding. Also, change one of your iPad screenshots to show more trains and such, perhaps a route getting completed, show the end game results screen which is cool, remove the one that shows the picture of the train station, and show more games in progress and the game you are trying to join - that is empty.
Do not update, Do not buy
This developer updated Ticket to Ride AND Pandemic within the last 2 days and now both are unplayable. Ticket to Ride is flashing a huge banner for no reason every single time it’s your turn and then you have to touch the screen to get rid of it. The banner has no words and obstructs your view. There is absolutely no reason to have this banner, the game was perfectly fine before.
The developer doesn’t seem to understand that putting this banner in may please one or two irrational people who asked for it for whatever reason, probably because they are stupid, but it will totally ruin the game for almost every other player. The developer should stop and think before making changes like this. It shows they aren’t thoughtful or careful. They should be careful this a very valuable flagship game. They will lose a lot of money. I don’t understand why they would intentionally break their truly great and impressive games.
Then for Pandemic it’s even worse, they overhauled the layout, game mechanics, setting options and nothing is working right. It’s absolutely atrocious what they did to Pandemic because the old version was extraordinarily slick and impressive - everything just worked wonderfully. It was a practically perfect copy of the actual game. The same for Ticket to Ride until this banner glitch which is so annoying it makes the game impossible to enjoy.
This falls far short of my expectations given that I paid not just for these two Apps, but also for each of the board games; and board game expansions; and in-app expansions.
There doesn’t seem to be a way to go back to prior app versions after upgrading, unfortunately. Thanks, Apple.
Why is the developer releasing updates without proper QA testing? TTR and Pandemic were great apps because they were nearly perfect copies of the actual games and were completely glitch free, at least in my experience. Please devs if you read this do the right thing and Make TTR and Pandemic Great Again!
Good for New Players, but OK for all others
What is Ticket to Ride?
If you’re not familiar with Ticket to Ride, it’s a modern classic in tabletop games. Forget Monopoly, Life, Sorry, and Clue. There’s a new era of games, and TTR has sold over 3 Million Copies — and for good reason. It’s a great game.
If You’ve Never Played Ticket to Ride - the App is a great introduction to the gameplay. It gives you a good overview of the game, and there are several maps to purchase as IAP.
If you HAVE played Ticket to Ride - the App is OK. The AI’s are generally predictable, and the development team seems to be more excited about putting together more maps than updating the AI, or improving the servers for those who like to play online.
Further Thoughts:
Remember when iTunes was first released? It was amazing. A music-software with a store where you could purchase music. Fast forward many years, and Apple has added feature upon feature upon feature to a base-code that wasn’t intended to be what it is today. It does what it does OK, but it’s not at all great.
Such is the Ticket to Ride app. When it was first released, it was one of the best (if not the best) modern gaming apps available on iOS. It expanded to other platforms. And expanded with more expansions/maps. And expanded some more, and some more, and some more. As a result, it’s “OK” at what it does, but it’s not great.
In the same way Days of Wonder made a “Small World 2” app, it’s time for a Ticket to Ride 2 app. Having it redesigned and rebuilt from the ground up is a tall order, for sure. But for those with any decent amount of TTR playing experience, the App experience is only getting worse.
So if you’re new to TTR, it’s worth getting the app. Really, it is. But for those with a good bit of TTR experience, the app is OK, and needs some pretty serious tweaking to make it an app that you’ll go to regularly. With Better AI’s, better servers with cross-platform play, etc., TTR could take the top spot in modern tabletop game apps once again.
Gotta agree with everyone.this update blows.(a little less)
Update: some improvements. Decks of cards are separate, and the auto-zoom in gone (but can zoom manually). Interface still seems clunky compared to the original. Please add the option to have the conductors voice. Also, add a "replay" button at the end of a game instead of going back to the lobby (especially annoying on a vertical map...having to switch to horizontal just to push play and go back to vertical. Actually, all menus should have a vertical version, so you only have to switch formats with a map change.
Was 5 star, then 1 star, up to 2 stars. Keep working guys, there is a lot of damage still to repair giving everyone a new map for free in the next update may help (England? ;-) )
Original Review:
Adding vertical...cool (but I should be able to stay vertical on the menu screens until I select a horizontal map...having to switch to horizontal just to play the same map and res witch is annoying).
Adding asynchronous play...cool. But it sounds like you screwed up everything about online play in the process.
Adding an India map. Cool. New maps are long overdue.
But so many big and small changes were made just for the hell of it...and none of them are welcome. The conductors voice, the music and sounds effects, the flow of the play, the graphics...have all taken a massive turn for the worst ant made this game so much less enjoyable.
I agree with almost every negative listed here, so I won't rehash it. One that I didn't see is the placement of the two stacks of cards in the vertical play field...right next to each other. I am constantly hitting the routes cards instead of the other pile.
So, trash all of the bad graphic and sound "fixes", make some vertical menus, keeps the couple of good things mentioned above, redesign the layout of the vertical board, re-install all of the old data and leaderboards, and work on adding things that players want...like new maps with new game elements, and quit trying to destroy one of the best apps on my iPad!
Fantastic game with some glitches in the app and poor chat system
Overall Ticket to Ride is a great implementation of the game. The touch interface for playing the game is well thought out and really, really good. It's a pleasure to play. There's 3 DLC additional games available and they are worth buying. The vs. CPU play is good, though I wish there was some difficulty level setting/different opponents of different skill.
The online play is excellent, but the chat system they've implemented is overly cute and not so functional. I hope they'll drop the cute speech bubbles and instead give us a normal chat system. As it stands messages appear for a short time and then disappear and can't be seen again, and anything longer then a short message is cut off. Moreover, after the game ends it appears to be impossible to chat within the game, which is a real bummer - the scoring card overlays the main window and the only thing you can do is tap the quit button and quit out of the game. I really hope they change that.
In addition I've run into what I think is a glitch while playing online. At one point it was my turn by their was no deck to draw from. The only things I could do was to draw face up cards or claim a route. Perhaps I didn't understand a rule, but I really didn't think it was supposed to be the case that you would have no deck to draw from. After my turn the deck reappeared and the next player was able to draw from it.
Lastly, while I realize that pass-and-play would not be ideal, I still think it could be done and it's a bit disappointing that it isn't there. We're taking a real train ride this summer and it would have been great to be able to play TTR with my family while on the train, or in general while on vacation, without having to lug the board game with us. So while it would require some compromises, and wouldn't be perfect, I still think it would be a valuable addition to the game and I hope they'll add it in an update.
But don't let the above discourage you. This is an excellent game and well worth the asking price. The DLC is definitely worth picking up as well, especially if you get them while on sale.
Someone must have fired the UX team??!
As a 15+ year UX designer and architect, I feel qualified to say that someone must have fired the entire UX team. The new update that is mandatory has very little that is positive about the experience. It is, truly, night and day from the original game...and not in a good way.
From the clunky buttons to the inconsistent fonts (Times Roman? Really?) and spacing to the interactions that don't match throughout the game, what the heck happened? I am still trying to understand why an upgrade was even put out? Upgrade to what? Did nobody test this?
My assumption is they were trying to abandon the support for the native app by building a game that could be responsive and play on either mobile or iPad. The result is, literally, an almost-unplayable sad relic of a previously-amazing online game. this was a favorite of mine. I played online -- enjoying competing against people around the world. I also played local and pass-and-play with my son and husband when we went out to eat sometimes. Now, nothing works. Nothing. Games freeze. Games quit. What used to be easy about placing trains on track has caused me to miss and place trains incorrectly. The icons are horribly ornate and minuscule. I can't tells hat they represent at all. The numbers are incredibly hard to read and the other icons are meaningless. Hardly anyone is playing. Chat must not work because every game I have been in -- no one can talk to each other. What I type in chat doesn't appear.
The old maps looked wonderful. They were so easy to work with. The new maps don't feel like the same game, plus they zoom in and out and literally make me dizzy.
I am shocked that they could make such an intensive, radical change to this game without user experience designers. It truly appears as if backend developers put this entire new design together. No design thought or intelligence. You didn't think to test it out on focus groups made up of existing players/users?
Was looking forward to India, but not purchasing anything else. This game, sadly, will probably not be around much longer. Oh well, back to the board game version!
LOVE this game. Hate the app
Ticket to Ride is one of my favorite games, but the app is completely inflexible. For instance, there’s no allowance for rules variation. In other popular board games, people have developed house rules etc. which they want to be able to play, and many of their digital versions accommodate some degree of this (I know Risk, Monopoly, and Catan do, off the top of my head). I never enforce the rule that, if there are fewer than 4 players, two of them can’t both build on a double track (the digital rules don’t let you customize this!) but I have to abide by it on digital and it’s terrible. All the expansion maps are great, for instance, but they come with all kinds on new rules that my family, friends, and I don’t want to have to play with and usually ignore in-person; we just like to change it up! But in the digital version, the rules are hard and fast and frankly I can’t enjoy the expansions at all... we’re trying to play online while we’re all separated in the Coronavirus pandemic, but this is really wrecking our usual dynamic.
This game is great. If this stuff isn’t going to bother you, please enjoy it on digital! But I’ve been really frustrated that I can’t make even minor settings adjustments... there’s no flexibility at all and I’m definitely playing this app less than I want to. DEVELOPERS! Please give us a LITTLE bit of power to adjust the game rules! Would make this app SO, SO much better!
I would personally love:
-Ability to adjust amount of trains you have to build with (with fewer players, I wish I could try longer, more challenging roots. More trains would be great).
-Ability to turn on or off restrictions on double tracks so two players could build on them, even with as few as two players.
-Ability to choose whether or not locomotive (rainbow) cards are wild
-Ability to adjust whether you can only draw one Locomotive per turn, or if they draw like any other color.
-Ability to choose AI aggressivity (sometimes they cut you off from completing a Route on purpose, for example. This is a valid strategy, but sometimes you might just prefer a more friendly game).
Honestly, any of these little abilities would be an improvement in my opinion - but I hope the developers just get the message that SOME flexibility would be GREATLY appreciated! Please add some tweaks!
Macworld just posted an article talking with the CEO about this new update
Macworld just posted an article talking with the CEO about this new update.
It provides such gems as : "We think -and the data in the app shows we are correct- that people play differently on the iPhone than they do on the iPad" Oh really!? I never would have guessed...
"They tend to play longer sessions on the iPad than they do on the iPhone" Never mentioning that those numbers are completely skewed. The iPad users paid more for a premium package and are more likely to be avid boardgamers, while the iPhone version has been made free twice. With more users and a high likelihood that users purchased it with only a passing interest in the game, the numbers can't be an accurate account of their target demographic.
Oh and they speak about how async was put into the iPhone version because of a "vocal minority" and that few people use the feature. Perhaps that's because most people that want async are the iPad players who are stuck using the convoluted DOW system to find and play games? or maybe it's cause I currently have both versions of Ticket to Ride on my iPad so I can use one for async and the other for offline play.
Personally, I think it's unfair to limit functionality of an app (especially a higher priced one!) because the developers think they know what's best for us. I seem to recall them saying the same thing about Ticket to Ride never becoming universal because the maps just don't work at the iPhone screen size... Looks like they were wrong there too.
Look at games like Carcassonne and Summoner Wars to see how great async can be. Speaking of Summoner Wars, it is a game that is NOT ideal for the smaller iPhone screen yet the developers made it universal because that's what the fans deserve and is still completely playable.
There's also no mention of the huge price difference in iPad expansions versus the iPhone sizes either. We have to pay double for the same maps while iPhone users get to pay less AND get Game Center async?
Now Ticket to Ride does offer some GC integration but it's woefully inadequate. If you go into the online lobby you can see all your Game Center friends in a separate list... Not the ones that own Ticket to Ride... ALL OF THEM.
So if I want to coordinate an online game I have to find out if they even own the game, search their user name, invite, then play a live only match.
I won't pretend for a second that it will be an easy task to retrofit their existing system for a sync play but I don't want to use their system. The iPhone versions use full Game Center integration (that's why push notifications come from Game Center instead of the app) so why not side load that system in the iPad app so I can choose the best system for me?
Good with minor flaws
The Good: If you’re a fan of the board game, this one really captures the look and feel of the real thing. The art is gorgeous. The interface is easy to use and fairly intuitive— tap and drag and drop— easy peasy. Solo play is a nice feature, although the opponent AIs quickly become fairly easy to defeat— though winning with ticket cards that require the cities in the middle of the board remains very hard to do, especially the low value routes. The ability to speed up play in the Settings options also makes the app great as a time killer when you only have a few minutes to spare.
The flaws: Alas, you can’t choose your own player color (or at least I couldn’t figure out how to do so) or player image in solo play. Minor quibble, but sometimes you just get tired of being the Yellow Girl.
Also, the game constantly reminds you that it’s your turn. Again, minor flaw, but it can get a little irritating.
Of more concern is the app’s “reshuffle” mechanism for the Train Card deck. When the deck gets down to mostly Locomotive cards, this triggers the “reshuffle” when three or more Locomotives are placed face up— and the app continues to do this, even when it’s not possible to produce five face up cards that won’t include three or more Locomotives. It takes time, and it’s annoying to watch it “shuffle” a deck for which shuffling serves no purpose. Eventually it stops, but the app should be “smart” enough to realize there’s no way to shuffle five Locomotives and two train cars and come up with five face up cards that don’t include three Locomotives.
But worse is what happens when you draw a single face up “normal” train car and only Locomotives remain, and there’s no longer a face down deck. In a real game, you’re stuck with the one card draw, and the next player goes. But in the app, the game basically freezes in place. You can’t draw a face up locomotive, you can’t draw from the deck (there isn’t one), you can’t give back the color card, and you can’t pass the game on to the next player. Instead the app just keeps reminding you to draw a second card when there’s no possible second card to draw! The only thing you can do is back out of the game and start a new one. I’ll call this one a “major quibble,” even though it will only happen on rare occasions.
Finally, occasionally I’ve had the app crash when starting a new game— sometimes before hitting the board screen, sometimes when dealing out the initial cards. Clearing the open app and reopening it usually solves the problem in one go, but sometimes it will crash multiple times in a row— though fortunately never in mid game.
Cleaning up these objections and improving the various “bot” players for smarter play (and a little less card-hoarding) would boost this review to 5 stars.

Online game
Frustrated with waiting 30+ minutes for fello players timer to count down over and over again before robot takes over. Please fix this program now. Like 'Catan', robot should take over within 2 minutes and give player 2 minutes to resume game. Also, while waiting for player before me to take their turn, it's actually my turn without me knowing, then I'm put out of the game. If these bugs aren't fixed I'll be demanding a refund.
This Game is AWESOME! but
Loving this game even after having owned the previous unsupported version years ago. Finally repurchased the newer version and my previous 1910 America expansions still came over! Only problems I have is that I am out of the app doing something else and am notified of my turn. I tap on the notification and it switches over to TTR and the app crashes. EVERYTIME. This Is annoying.
Next issue is, I was playing the classic 1910 edition and the game thought I did not complete St. Louis to Miami when I blatantly finished it as I had one long train that the game counted through those two cities. Please fix these issues!

I just updated and am sorry I did
I just updated my app, and agree with the many MANY other comments on here that the huge banner is incredibly annoying! Not only that, but when I go into the settings to increase the speed of each turn for solo play, it resets back to slow every time. I can’t make the fast train setting stick, and this makes the game drag. I have been recommending this app to friends and family for years, but unless these two issues get fixed, I will be deleting the game off my own device. I sure wish there was a way to uninstall an update! And I wish I would have read the recent reviews before assuming an update would be better. Major bummer!

Online Play is Super Buggy!
I love this game, but I’m constantly booted from online play which is odd because I’m on Google fiber and have a super fast connection.
Each time I was booted during the last two or three turns of the game and I had plenty of time left. The common cause of booting was when I selected a train car or reviewed my routes. It always happened immediately which is very suspicious of a bug when data is imputed. I’ve contacted support, but never heard back. I’ve also tried hitting resume, but it says a game doesn’t exist?
The board game is 5 Stars. The app is one because every few games your game will be wiped clean like it never happened.

Added feature ruined everything
I played this all the time until my turn started producing a banner across the screen indicating my turn. Blocks the view and is unnecessary. Please get rid of it. It makes the game annoying to the point I don’t want to play anymore. Would be a 5 star game for me otherwise.
Response to developer: Your reply is ridiculous. No one needs that banner. Everyone here complaining about it was new once and had zero trouble navigating when our turn was up given the constant reminders that were there previously. Unless your target audience is in the 3-5 year old demographic, you may want to reconsider this as your explanation. It’s insulting.

V. 2.5.11
Don’t update if you’re trying to play on an iPhone X or XR. The maps aren’t centered & you can’t place tickets on some of the vertical maps (like Germany & the UK) b/c ‘grabbing’ a ticket makes the whole game move. You can’t get a ticket to put on the map without hitting the bar at the bottom that minimizes & switches between apps. And with the France game you cannot see the whole map on your phone at once. Games of Wonder should have not released this with so many problems. Also at least in Germany if you complete your routes & don’t take new destinations the app selects 4 (!) for you. Not what I needed when I had one train car left.

Did someone hack your code?
Please fix one of my favorite games! As a player of 7+ years electronically, I’m incredibly frustrated with the latest update. What happened?
Today I had 4 orange cars and a wild card and tried to place them between Atlanta and New Orleans. I was told I was putting the wrong color down. Tried several more times. Gave up, drew more cards, got another orange card and it then let me play them on that route but then it took all five of my orange cards. Nothing like this has ever happened before!
It never used to crash, you could easily play the game without any issues and now I don’t want to play it anymore. If you don’t get this fixed and quickly, you’re going to lose me as a customer!

Ok implementation
Great game ok implementation… right now chat has been disabled for months because they don’t have a solution for people being vulgar - how stupid is that on both counts! Sometimes you buy expansion boards, then they disappear as if you do not own them. UPDATE Chat is still disabled 6 weeks later, removing a mostly fun social aspect and illustrating how little development effort this game gets … they should just turn chat on if they don’t have time to fix the spam problem. Update: a few months more and chat remains disabled, downgrading to 1 star Update 6 months later still no chat how stupid
Update still no chat after a year I think they have stopped development as there have been no updates

No chat monitor
Played for years, asmodee takeover lacks the support response and is getting worse by the month. So many game bugs…games do not start when you join and points lost..game ends and you have to exit app to start another game..scores on players screens are varied showing different outcomes for each player in the game. Worst of all. There are sexual deviants who join the system, rarely play a game and insert rude filth for all to see. Comments of sexual acts, pedophiles, encourage players to kill themselves. No admins monitor this and players keep changing names to continue abuse. Even player names are sexually perverse. No longer ask younger family far off, to join and play online for family fun.

Still buggy after the May 3 update
iPad 6th Gen, iOS 12.2 (16E227)
I am a fan of the board game, but I am rapidly losing my patience with this iOS port.
The game crashes a lot less now, so thank you for improving the app stability.
I wonder if your in-house testers even like this game that they work on. If you play 2 or 3 rematches, the game will start acting weird. Animations will get a little janky. Then cards sometimes go missing from the sideboard. Then the deck intermittently disappears.
Once, the game refused to let me place 4 trains on a 4-space track section which was gray (meaning, a wildcard target). That’s a new bug.
Please nail down these bugs. They are not difficult to find. Just play the blasted game with a more than perfunctory level of effort.

Game constantly crashing when trying to restart
I’ve tried twice to have this resolved with no success. In solo mode when trying to rematch or simply start a new game after completing one, the game crashes. It started happening every once in a while a couple years ago. Then got worse, to the point it does it more times than not. I have to open the app 3 or 4 times and try to start a game before it will go forward without crashing. I had an older iPhone but I got a 12 pro earlier this year and same problem. Always current on iOS and updating app. Tried many times to delete and reload app. I stopped for months at a time hoping it would get resolved but just tried again and same problem. Nothing works and no help from creators to date. It’s a great game but unplayable like this.

A new season of crashing
Over the years my husband and I and sometimes the kids have played this game on our phones and iPad mostly with ease. Sure, there have been seasons of bugginess as with any new and expanding apps, but apparently tonight we have entered a new season of bugginess. Tonight 4 of us on phones/iPads tried starting three different original USA map games and experienced problems within the first 20 minutes of each game. Each glitch that happened also denied at least one player from reentering the four player game and we had to ditch each game. We spent an hour plus of our lives starting, crashing and attempting to rejoin three games with no success. When we would rejoin, none of the cards or scores would populate. Turns became stuck. It was so frustrating and absolutely no fun.

Sorta ridiculous
So I just got this game the other day. I love the board game and have two variations. I had high hopes for playing this game online with varying opponents and I had two successful games and enjoyed them quite a bit.
So, this brings me to my complaint. I was playing a game with 3 players total. We were playing with an 8 minute timer. As I waited for my turn my timer seemed to be counting down normally and I patiently waited for opponents to make their move while watching their timer count down. Here’s the kicker, my timer would lose a significant amount of time when my turn came about. Eventually after 3 turns which took less than 3 minutes, I lost all time and was removed from the game. Inijvestes time in the game, and a glitch of some sort booted me out. Extremely frustrating for an fame that I paid for.

PLEASE DO NOT BUY-APP STOLE MY MONEY
I really loved this game and the online features especially given that it allowed me to play with friends online during this quarantine. I paid $6.99 and it was working up until the update. I updated the game two days ago and now I can barely open a game. The game will blink and glitch whenever it’s my turn. I have to exit the game, restart, log back in despite having automatic login, just to see that the clock’s kept going so I lost a minute. But then, it keeps glitching so I redo the process and now I’ve lost another minute. Sometimes it’ll glitch where I will have to put my card down 3-4 times because it didn’t register then I’ve lost more time. This was a good game but now I’m trying to get a refund because the frustration and anger isn’t worth it. If anyone can comment suggestions for other games, I’d greatly appreciate it!

Lots of bugs
There are lots of bugs with this app. The biggest one happens when you play with friends. Most of the time when I’ve played with different friends, the computer just takes over for the friend. It happened to every game that I was playing with a friend. The friend would just somehow become the computer and we couldn’t ever finish the game. It got to the point where none of my friend games were every being completed between me and whichever friend I was playing with and so we stopped playing. Second, the bonus 10 point card isn’t rewarded based on the rules of the game. This has also happened most of the time I’ve played the game. It seems to just be handed out arbitrarily rather than what the rules state. Too many bugs for a rating beyond 2 stars. And it’s only 2 stars (and not 1) because I would actually love playing this game if they would fix it.

Latest Release Is A Step Backwards, Again
Europe 1912 Mega was working great until this last update. It has slowed down noticeably with dead times, particularly when the game is over. It will sit for a while before it starts scoring the game. The graphic animation speed adjustment is a nice addition.
Dropped cards on routes often persist blocking the view of that section of the route. I can’t see which players cars are on that section. Other graphics persist, also blocking view of the map. (NOTE to developers: To reproduce these errors: Play the game 10 times in a row.)
Trying to drag cards to a route drags up control panel very often. It never did that before. I was much better when the train cards were horizontal on the bottom.
It now crashes and freezes frequently which it never did before, either. It’s very annoying. Don’t upgrade! I wish I hadn’t. I have Version 2.5.8 on an iPhone 5 and it runs perfectly and way faster than the current version on my iPhone 8.
The latest version now will start selecting train cards without me touching the screen! I always play solo against the bots so if the developers would like to duplicate this error, play the game this way.

So frustrating
Let’s start with what I liked...the game was easy to navigate and made me excited because it corresponded well to the tabletop version. My problem is the GLITCHES, and there were many. My opponent was a friend of mine, and after the game was over I checked with her and she confirmed that she also experienced them on her side.
-The game force quit SO many times.
-I would take 20 seconds to play a turn, and then suddenly I’d be missing 2 minutes of play time on my clock. I guess we were freezing up, but it was happening repeatedly on my end. It looked like her clock was running out, but then it would unfreeze and my time would be missing and hers would be given back. So by the end of the game, I had 4 minutes left and she had 30.
-When I completed my first route, I had to play the same turn 4 times because it would say I completed it and then restart my turn and wipe away the turn’s progress.
I’m pretty upset that I spent what I did on that app. I’m not usually one to spend money on apps, but I love the table top version and wanted to play with my friend in another state, so it would’ve been well worth it to spend that, but I don’t know if I’ll want to play again after the hassle.

New Tutorial does not teach the game
Version 2.6.3 - A new tutorial was added. The old tutorial is gone. The previous tutorial was good at teaching how to play the game. The new tutorial has a floating hand pointing at places. The explanations are not clear on what is happening or what your doing or why your doing it. The game board is blown up out of proportion. Half the screen is blacked out, Making it difficult to see what’s going on, and what your doing. There is no way to exit the tutorial except by playing it out, or closing the game. I previously did the old tutorial before I told a friend he could learn the game from it. And I felt it would teach him the game. He had trouble understanding this new tutorial. We ended up not wanting to play. Please bring back the previous tutorial.
When we tried to play the game we found it is an annoying game. When we are picking our tickets there is a sign that drops every 8 seconds that says, “Please choose some tickets.” And then there is a sign that says “It’s your turn” that keeps dropping down every 10 seconds. I know it’s my turn. I only need to be told once. Can we turn these annoying signs off? We are playing “Pass and Play” Even if we were playing another way; there is no need for these signs to drop over and over again.
These annoying signs drop down even in the solo game. They are useless annoyances.
