I filed bankruptcy in 2023, due to big hits I took during the pandemic. The reason was to get a clean slate but housing companies stating they accept bankruptcies are not. Since my bankruptcy I have maintained 100% payments, no evictions at all(even before bankruptcy), no criminal history. When I spoke with GG, a supervisor, she advised that my overall credit health was why I was denied. I asked did they accept bankruptcies and she stated yes, she went on to bring up old accounts, included in my bankruptcy. Bankruptcy is just what it is, those accounts are gone. She stated I had balances on my accounts in bankruptcy, like that’s obvious considering that’s the purpose of bankruptcy. So in no way is this fair housing if my past, that has since been discharged is being a factor. G also mentioned my husband has limited credit history, I informed her that he just came to the US in December 2023 and what he has accomplished in a few short months here, most don’t accomplish living here all their life. She stated “while I applaud that, it’s still not enough.” He has a credit score in the 700’s, 100% payments, consistent work history and no criminal past. I’ve been on the same job since 2007. So while I filed bankruptcy, stability is there. I feel like if we were a different color and accomplished these things, none of these would be a factor.
