This morning (06/02/2014 at approx. 9:00am) I went for gas to the Shell station in the Montecito area of San Rafael, CA.
As usual, I paid with my credit card, choose the selected grade and lift the pump. As soon as I lift the pump gas gushed out of the pump. There was no way I could stop and an abundant spray of fuel splashed all around the platform, on my car, my clothes, my shoes and on the floor. It took a couple of minutes until I was able to fit the pump into the car’s tank. No one ever came for assistance.
When I finally was able to fit the pump into the tank and went to look for assistance they had me wait for about 10 minutes before getting any assistance. Then an elderly man who would not speak English came out. I had to go back and forth to have the man assist me with removing the pump from my tank, since I would not repeat what just happened.
The man would just not pay attention to me and continued to clean the floor by putting gravels on the spill which was significant and not a small area. There was no closing of the pump, nor any kind of inspection to guarantee safety. No one asked me how I was doing. It was a situation that had a very high potential for serious harm and it was met with absolute and complete negligence.
I went to my work and clean myself. Then I tried to call the station to report my complaint/concern to the management (10:30am) at the listed number [protected]. No one answered and after a quite unanswered wait it went on to a fax machine. I went online to check Shell website but they have no system in place to report complaints.
I called the non-emergency number of San Rafael Police Office [protected] but this is not the kind of incident they deal with. I am concern regarding the lack of safety and the negligent manner at this gas station and would like to have the appropriate regulatory agency check on them, does anyone have any suggestions who should I call?
