Yesterday, Monday 26th 2022 I was shopping at Ross in Tupelo, Ms 38801 for after Christmas deals and clearance. I did see on TikTok that all boxed slippers would be.49 cent so I wanted to verify it. I went to the men’s department and found a pair of boxed slippers on clearance for $6.49 (or close to it, not sure the actual price but this is close). I didn’t see anyone working in men’s so I walked over to the displays in front of junior ladies between the register and saw an associate scanning and marking down wallets. I politely asked the young lady to scan the boxed slippers for me and she said she could not scan an item from another department in the department she was in. So I asked her would she walk 2-3 feet over into the men’s department and scan the boxed slippers and she said no she couldn’t stop or leave what she was doing. So I asked to speak with a manager. When she got up she walked to the aisle right beside the men’s department so I asked her if she would just scan the item and she said no and proceeded to get the manager. When I saw her back scanning the wallets I asked her did she get a manager and she stood up and pointed to the register and said there she is. When I explained my issue with the manager she said her associate was following her strict orders and could not scan the items for me. She said she had instructed them to not assist customers with needs from other departments and to rescan something with a price already was not necessary. When I mentioned the TikTok advertisement, she looked at me and said well that’s TikTok and not Ross in a rude tone. I asked her if she would scan the items for me and she said no and turned away and started talking to the associate close be her. Feelings hurt and in disbelief, I just started for the door to leave and she looked back at the associate she turned away from me to and told her to get the buggy I had to return the items to the shelf in a loud enough tone for me to hear. I spend a lot of money at Ross’s stores and I look for them in every city I visit. I have never been treated so poorly with such rudeness it just a a Ross store but at any retailer. Customer Service is just that Customer Service, and for a manager to instruct associate to tell customers no to simply scan an item when the scanning and marking down items anyway is just unethical and wrong. To say she couldn’t scan something from another department other than the one she was in was just a bold face lie or an insane rule her or the manager made up. Like the scanner know what department it’s in. I know by yhe attitude of the manager this can not be the 1st and only complaint on her and this was the first time I’ve seen the associate that had been instructed not to assist me with an scan request from another department but she didn’t look happy or like she wanted to be at work when I approached her. I know it was the day after Christmas and all but to instruct associates in such a manner is just not the American way of good healthy business. The scanner was small and fit on one finger and would not have taken but a second to assist me because at that point I only had one item to be scanned.
Desired outcome: I would like an Apology and for the Manager to undergo Customer Service Training, with Ethical Management, and Leadership Training so she can properly train her employees.
