View all 150 complaintsExtra Space Storage - Illegal 500% rental increase without a 30 day notice: I just submitted a complaint
On march 15th, 2022 I spoke with joe, a supervisor at extra space tel# [protected] regarding the astronomical illegal increase that was applied to my account in the beginning of 2022, without a sending a 30 day notice via email, regular usps mail, nor rrr (return receipt request) certified mail. They were unable to provide me with proof of any 30 day notice to increase. Had they done that, I would've moved out immediately. Currently, my account balance is $520.85, which I have never agreed to, hence the reason it remains unpaid. I found a class action lawsuit against you: "judge approves $5m class-action settlement against self-storage reit extra space" my personal property is not to be auctioned off, since my account is still unresolved. I aslo found that you must follow all federal, state and local statutes as a self-storage company; "new jersey self-storage facility act, n.J. S.A. 2a:187 et seq (the “ssfa”)." I am requesting this complaint to be reviewed by an executive and corrected.
Desired outcome: BRING MY MONTHLY BALANCE DOWN TO $205.00, REMOVE THE ILLEGAL INCREASE, AND DO NOT AUCTION OFF MY PERSONAL BELONGINGS, WHILE THIS ACCOUNT IS IN DISPUTE, NOR AFTER IT'S BEEN RESOLVED

I have rented with Extra Space Storage for about seven to 8 years. I moved out of the space today and will not be receiving any prorated money that was paid on 10-16-23 to the amount of 366.24. I was in that unit for only one day of the payment period. The manager at the storage facility was rude and hung up on me when I questioned him about not getting a prorate for my month that was paid by auto-debit. I could not get the corporate number from him. I finally google the corporate number. I was told that because I did not call and make arrangements for the move that I would not get reimbursed as they only reimburse while I was in the storage unit. So now, I am facing not getting my prorate...No where in my contract of almost a decade ago states that I have to make notice of moving out of the storage, but I talked to someone in the office yesterday before I moved out and they stated that I would get a prorate to come in or call after I move. Now, corporate is supposed to call me back. I am soooo angry!
SNEAKY RATE INCREASE WITHOUT NOTIFICATION
I rented a unit in December at an advertised rate of $85.00. I am on a fixed income and this rate was all I can afford. In January I paid my unit up to April 2022 and left town to handle family business. On April 26, 2022 I received a email that my rent for May is due at the rate of $134.50. At NO TIME was I notified that there would be an increase and as I am not in VA where my unit is located. I am unable to return to remove my belongings. I am dismayed to find that this is a habit of Extra Space Storage and there is a class action lawsuit against the company for habitually doing this to customers. I will be filing a complaint with the Attorney General's Office and Consumer Affairs. This practice is known as "Bait and Switch" and is illegal.
