My boyfriend and I purchased a dog from The Breeders Association of America in Brick, NJ. We automatically fell in love with a puppy and had to take her home. We were offered the "financing" through wags lending. The girl at the store informed us it would be free of interest for the first 12 months and if we didn't pay off the $1, 500 by then then fees and interest would be applied. We would have just paid cash for the dog (and I sure wish we had) but we no interest for a year sounded awesome so we agreed. When we were given the contract we asked about the numbers we saw and she said don't worry about those numbers as long as you make your monthly payments for a year you won't have to worry about those. Excited and giddy to take home our new baby we just signed the papers and couldn't wait to take her home. Fast forward 14 months I notice I am still getting charged my monthly payments and when I called wags to find out what was going on they explained to me I have a 30 month "lease to buy" this was never an interest free financing. And now my $1, 500 "loan" is turning into a $4, 000 one. This means wags is making 300% interest. It still doesn't even make any sense to me. I wish I would have known the correct information because I would have paid cash and wouldn't be out an extra $3, 500. The pet store refused to take any responsibility even though their employee obviously was new or poorly trained. We even recommended the place to my boyfriends mother and she bought a puppy there. What a mistake. We are just so disappointed with Wags and The breeders association of America. We feel completely taken advantage of. It's just unbelieveable a company can do this and get away with it. We've been robbed.

Hi there, I work for the ASPCA (American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals) and we’d love to hear more about your experience. Information like this would be incredibly valuable because it would allow us to help other folks like you who’ve had to deal with these challenges – and help the animals as well. Would you be able to reach out to us at press@aspca.org? Or if you could give us your contact info, we’d be happy to reach out to you. Thank you so much! –Carly from ASPCA

If the ASPCA is of any use, you'd be working to put this company out of business.

This company doesn't finance pets it rents them out. You know there's plenty of rescues of any breed everywhere, that are trying to rehome dogs already, and they are significantly cheaper than a puppy, plus you know they need a home.

I am appalled by this company, I originally financed my puppy through Wags and than Monterey financial took it over first of all my puppy cost $900. than $350. for plane that's fine I'm paying on time I happened to look and I owed $3000. I'm like WTF didn't get any answers so I paid what I paid for my puppy and plane ticket and than I stopped paying and that was the biggest mistake I destroyed my credit they were harassing me I changed my phone number and I check my credit report and it says I still owe 2500. this is ridiculous I'm so aggravated never do business with this company

Hello, Patty. Have any you filed a lawsuit against these two companies? My name is Paul, and I work for 1-800-LAW-FIRM in Southfield, MI. They are a national law firm taking issues like these under consideration for mass tort cases. Your claim, if you decide to call us and proceed, will be seen in court individually. You wouldn't have to travel to court, or pay out of pocket for the legal process either. You could call me toll free at [protected] for more information.

I too was used for this terrible mistake. I fell absolutely in love with a puppy in the pet store and I just couldn't leave because of how bad they had treated him at the store. I was looking for a toy poodle and I thought maybe the pet store has one! So I went and I asked and I got told "oh hes in the back.. I guess I'll go get him." So I waited for her to bring him out and he was so scared shaking, whining, and I held him and he immediately stopped and from then on I knew there was no way I could leave him there! So I didn't have all the money that was needed to purchase him I believe it was right under $2000.00. The sales associate said oh we have a financing partner, as long as you pay your payments and as soon as he is paid off he is all yours. So I agreed at a whopping $250.00 payments a month and long story short from the first vet appt this poor puppy was not in fact healthy. He was severely malnourished, had constant bloody diarrhea and wouldn't gain any weight no matter how much he ate, I contacted the pet store and they told me, "he is your problem now." 6 months fast forward making my payments with no problems, he somehow got out of my yard and ran off and came back with a broken front leg. I immediately took him to an Emergency Vet and was told to take him to a special orthopedic vet that can attempt to do surgery. I paid for both visits which costed me over $1000.00, at the orthopedic specialist I was told yes they can do surgery but if he jumps off the couch wrong it would rebreak. And to try and let his leg heal by itself in a cast with no activity besides going to the bathroom and letting him eat. So I tried everything possible for little to no movement with him for 3 months and his leg was still not healed. It came down to the point of getting his leg amputated or putting him down. Amputation costed $1200.00. Keep in mind I stopped paying Monterey because of all these huge vet bills I was struggling to stay alive in which I contacted them and they did not care to even understand! I contacted them one month later and they would not be understanding only to tell me I need to pay or they will come and get him and I asked what they would do if they got him and I was told they would more than likely put him down. So I made arrangements through my vet for the amputation and currently I get nasty calls from Monterey Financial, I have a balance of 2500 in collections now and I still have a vet bill that's 700. I just can't seem to figure out what else I should do. Monterey Financial is a terrible company and is so rude and unhelpful. I dont know what to do

I purchased a dog at the pet store in November 2016 and financed through wags lending then Monterey financial ended up being who paid my payments to . I absolutely love my dog and would never regret him but never again will I do this they are a rip off. I’m still paying for the dog and won’t be finished till November of 2018 3 more months thank goodness but they financed me more than the cost of my dog and my monthly payment is 137.84 when I have my last payment I have to call in and pay 200 dollars so I can own him she said I’m renting my dog I won’t own him till November this is the biggest bs I’ve ever heard of renting a dog that’s ridiculous to say such a thing he’s part of my family so anyone thinking of doing this do not do it

Game on. I leased a dog through WAGS lending a year ago and made the initial payment in store and have not made any other payments to the company in a year. I will not settle for being scammed and threatened. When/if it goes to collections, they will negotiate the debt and WAGS will, as usual lose in the end. It's been a year and they haven't been on my credit. Game on, I dare them to try to come on my property and "reclaim" the dog, just like people who rent to own furniture. Possession is 9/10th of the law...I am not paying 3k for a dog, I have the receipt that shows what I paid for the dog and that's all I am paying, They tell me the extra is "taxes, fee's" what whatever they want to pull out of their hat, which is crap. This is not up for debate, two can play this game. PS... I am in Florida (If that makes any difference) *** just adopt, Don't shop and regret**

I purchased a puppy from wags and then Monterey financial. I paid all of my payments on time but don't know how to make my last payment of $150.00. If you know who and how to make it I would really appreciate it. My contact email is: debbiefletcher878@gmail.com.
