puppy
I recently purchased the third Newfoundland for my family from this breeder. The puppy was shipped to me with an umbilical hernia that had not been disclosed. It requires surgical repair. At 4 months this sweet puppy started limping badly. At 5 1/2 months she underwent a painful elbow dysplasia surgery. She had bone fragments in both elbows. I sent all surgical reports and x-rays and cat scans to the breeder. Their only concession is that they will pay for the hernia repair. In lieu of giving me back my money ($2500) for the cost of the puppy or $4000 for the cost of the surgery, they said that I could send the now 7 month old family member back to them and they would send me another puppy. Who in the world would give up a puppy that they love and have invested time and energy and money into back to a breeder? That feels inhumane and cruel to me. Every single other breeder with whom I have spoken have told me that their way of handling this situation is to refund the cost of the puppy or the cost of the surgery….especially as this is a return client.

This is sad since the women has been breeding since 1977. Years ago we had an English Springer Puppy that was high strung. We had agreed to co-own the dog while the breeder showed her and then the first litter of puppies would be the breeder's). The puppy lived with us and we trained her. We moved into a home without a fenced-in yard (part of our original agreement) and therefore temporarily gave her to the breeder for conformation showing. After a couple weeks the breeder called and said the puppy was too high strung for our young children (4 & 5 yrs old) and did want to return her to us. She also said she could never breed the puppy because of high strung temperament. She kept the puppy which was almost a year old (we had never paid anything towards, just agreed to co-own and train along with 1st litter would be hers, then she would sign off on the dog to us) . Instead, she let us have pick of her next litter for free. It was the best puppy we have ever had. I appreciated the breeder holding to a standard.
Since I posted that complaint, the Newfoundland Club of America has removed Watchbear from their recognized and approved breeders list due to several other complaints to their board. They are no longer a recognized breeder by the NCA. Beware.
