1800GotJunk Review: Secrets They Don't Want You to Know About Hiring or Working with Them
This company, 1800GotJunk, is not a good choice for anyone looking to hire or work with them. There are several secrets that they don't want you to know about. Firstly, their call center is located in Canada and their representatives will tell you low prices and offer free estimates just to get you to agree to their services. However, once their truck team members arrive at your home, they will make up their own price and charge as much as possible for daily revenue goals and profit sharing reasons.
Secondly, they give you a 2-hour window for your appointment, but you might end up waiting around all day as their drivers don't care about punctuality. Thirdly, they claim to donate or recycle items, but in reality, they dump 95% of them in the landfill and only sell the other 5% to thrift shops.
Fourthly, they pay minimum wage and hire 95% of people who were just released from prison with dangerous felonies and/or are on parole. This means that you need to be very careful who you let in your home as they are known to steal and rob. Their motto is "we will make our money one way or another."
Fifthly, the price is supposed to be based on how much space you take up in the truck, but their truck often has items already in it or is filled with garbage bins, dollies, ladders, and other items they use to fluff up the truck. If you can look at the truck from an overhead view through a window or by climbing up on a truck, you will see all the empty space you are paying for.
Lastly, the company will always try to tack on extra fees when they are not necessary or are not explained. Labor fees, bed load fees, and even additional extra time fees are all ploys they use to bump up the price.
In conclusion, it is best to save your money and time and do your research before picking a company that will charge a lot less and do the same job. 1800GotJunk is not a trustworthy company and should be avoided.
My Experience with 1800GotJunk: Mixed Bag of Problems and Honesty
I never used a removal company before, so I didn't know what to expect. The first problem I encountered was when the first scheduler gave me the wrong pick-up date. Luckily, I checked my email and caught the mistake. I understand that errors can happen, so I didn't think too much of it.
The second problem arose when I called to correct the mistake. The second scheduler had me waiting for at least 10 minutes while she updated the information. She promised to send me an updated email, but she never did. Again, I was glad that I double-checked everything.
I had to call a third time to get everything sorted out. This time, a manager answered the call and set everything right. I was relieved that someone finally took charge and fixed the problem.
The third problem was the worst of all. On the morning of the scheduled pick-up, I received a call from the driver or scheduler saying that they weren't going to pick up my items that day. I had to reschedule all the other professionals who were working that week. It was unacceptable!
The fourth problem was that none of the three employees who scheduled my order disclosed the extra fee for a mattress and box spring set. I had told them exactly what items I needed to move, which were a king mattress and box spring (without a frame), about 50 hangers, less than 10 cardboard boxes no bigger than 25"x25"x10 with some clothing and miscellaneous items, and a swivel desk chair. When the delivery guys arrived, they said it would cost $350.00, which seemed a bit high considering there wasn't much to haul out, and they weren't there for more than 45 minutes. However, I agreed to the price because I needed the items moved out as soon as possible. But then they added an extra $70.00 for the mattress and another $70.00 for the box spring. It felt like a scam, and I was stuck.
After the move, I called and left a message with a supervisor named Heidi. To my surprise, she returned my call within 24 hours! She apologized and admitted that I should have been told about the extra fee for the mattress and box spring removal. Within a month, I was refunded $150.00. I appreciated Heidi's honesty and transparency.
Overall, my experience with 1800GotJunk was not great. I encountered several problems, and the extra fee for the mattress and box spring removal felt like a scam. However, I appreciated Heidi's honesty and the refund. This experience was in Rhode Island.
Review of 1-800-Got-Junk: Late, Side-Stacked, and Scam Artist Stephen
They showed up three hours late, which was a bit frustrating, but the first two guys who arrived were decent and took everything I asked them to. They loaded things quickly and things were going well until Stephen showed up. I think they sent him in to do the "dirty work". He's a scam artist, but not a particularly good one.
They loaded the truck by standing stuff up on the side and then put other stuff flat. I've read on other reviews that they try to fluff up the stuff. Side stacking makes it hard to estimate how full the truck is. The initial estimate was 1/2 to 2/3s full. It was just about 1/2, but Stephen insisted that I had to pay for 2/3 because that was the original estimate. In the end, he said he would only charge me for 5/8s (split the difference). I wasn't pleased, but the guys had worked hard, so I gave in.
The cost was $447. However, Stephen wrote $477 on the slip. I assumed he made an honest mistake, but when I pointed out the difference, he immediately took offense. He got loud and insisted he wasn't trying to cheat me. It was over the top, and I hadn't accused him of trying to cheat me. I figured he just wrote it down incorrectly, but he seemed to have a guilty conscience.
I was paying by credit card, so he handed me his phone to sign. As I did so, I noticed the amount on the screen had now jumped to around $580. Again, I questioned the amount, he snatched the phone from me, punched a couple of keys, and handed it back. What I find odd is that I think he had added in a tip (a hefty one considering I'd already agreed to pay for a bigger load, and they were three hours late). But instead of saying, "Oh, that's for a tip" or something to that effect and giving me a chance to tip them, he just snatched the phone from me.
When he left, my son, who was outside, heard him say to the other two workers that "I didn't fall/go for it". One of the other guys said, "but I thought we were supposed to get the 580".
I won't use 1-800-Got-Junk service again as I feel like they tried to cheat me, but they did take everything, and it only took 20 minutes to load. If you do venture to use them, be prepared for them not showing in the time window and check everything before you sign.
1800GotJunk: Misleading Name, Terrible Service - A Waste of Time and Money
This company, 1800GotJunk, is not the solution to your junk removal needs. Despite their name, do not be fooled. When they send their workers to your doorstep, you will be greeted by two young men who fit the Ken doll description - one blonde and one brunette - to cater to all preferences. However, they will only take your junk if it is spotlessly clean and disinfected, regardless of what was promised during the initial phone call to set up the appointment.
I had a terrible experience with this company just yesterday. They showed up at my house and refused to take most of my junk, claiming that it was not clean enough. This was the exact opposite of what they had promised on the phone. If you need to remove old furniture or anything else before moving out, do not hire this company. They will waste your time and charge you at least $300 plus tax and fees for stuff that bulk pickup would gladly take for free.
Moreover, they will not come into your home to remove any furniture or items that need to be removed to avoid fees unless they are in pristine condition and disinfected. Even if the home is due for a complete remodel and the new owner will not care about dirt, they will not take anything that is not clean enough.
If you have any time restrictions, do not expect them to complete what was promised during the booking appointment call. Their work ethic is terrible, and they do not want to work. I would never recommend this company to anyone. They have made my move a huge setback due to their lack of professionalism.
In the end, if you turn your back, they will leave your property without advising you that they cannot take any of the junk, even the stuff outside that could easily have been moved to the curb for bulk pickup. These employees should be fired, and the company should be ashamed of their misleading name and terrible service.
Confusing Pricing and Subjective Estimates: My Experience with 1800GotJunk
I recently used 1800GotJunk and I have to say, I won't be using them again in the future. Their pricing is really confusing and not very clear. I live in Central NJ and I think their prices might be different depending on where you are in the state or even the country! It's really hard to tell.
The crew that came to pick up my stuff just looked at it and decided how much it would cost. I wish they had a set price list that they could send out ahead of time. It would make things a lot easier. But I guess they don't want to do that for some reason. I'm not sure why.
I watched their video commercial with the CEO and it didn't really explain anything. So I did some research and found out that the minimum charge is $185. I'm not sure what that includes though. For 1/8 of a truckload, they charge $225. They told me I had 1/6 of a truckload which would cost me $285. A 1/2 load was $505 and a full load was $735. So the more you have, the more it costs. That makes sense, I guess.
You can always say no if you don't like the price they give you. But I didn't like how they just looked at my stuff and decided how much it would cost. It felt really subjective and not fair. Also, I made the mistake of taking the drawers out of my filing cabinets to make it easier for them to carry. But then they charged me more because it took up less space. I tried to explain that to them but they didn't care. So my advice is to just leave everything as it is.
If I didn't need my new furniture delivered the next day, I would have said no to their services. But I didn't really have a choice. I just wish they were more transparent about their prices and didn't rely so much on subjective estimates. I won't be using them again until they change that.
Terrible Experience with 1800GotJunk: Poor Management, Late Arrival, and No Discount Offered
I had a really bad experience with 1800GotJunk. The guys who came to move my stuff were good and professional, but the management was really poor. I scheduled my junk removal three days in advance and got the standard confirmation, which said that the time was reserved and I would get a call 30 minutes before the scheduled time. But then the manager for the Chicago region called me the day before and asked me to confirm for the following day. I called him back and left a voicemail saying I was still on, but he didn't have a voicemail message recorded indicating he was with the company.
The day of the move arrived and I waited and waited. Thirty minutes AFTER the scheduled time I called the main customer service line and asked what was going on. She called the Chicago area manager, who told her he wouldn't be able to honor my appointment. I complained because I had scheduled my whole weekend around this appointment, so she "escalated" the call and put me on hold. Ten minutes later she told me I would be receiving a call from the manager who would tell me when the movers would arrive. He said they would be there near the end of the two hour appointment window.
It will come as no surprise that they did not show up and I had to call again. The customer service rep said I would be getting another call from the manager to explain why they were so late. At this point they were three hours late. I never heard from this manager again, but got a call from the movers telling me when they would be there.
They arrived, three and a half hours late. But that is not all, they arrived with a truck that was about 1/3 full. I gave a very detailed rundown of what I had in my appointment and it should have been clear that I had very near a whole truck of water damaged items. So they had to fill the truck, go dump it across town (which took 1.5 hours), then come back for 5 larger items. By the time they were done it was seven hours after my scheduled time. Had they arrived on time with an empty truck it would have taken about 30 minutes. No discount offered for my inconvenience and the total cost was $720.
Then after all was said and done, customer service contacted me via email and said that I would be receiving a call from the Chicago area manager to discuss the situation and all the failures, but I did not receive that call and informed this customer experience team three times that I have not received a call.
Overall, just a very disorganized and careless group of people. The movers themselves were great, but everyone else involved just doesn't care about the customer. I went with them because I thought they would be more reliable than cheaper options available in Chicago, but I was wrong. I wouldn't recommend them to anyone.
Terrible Experience with 1800GotJunk: Damaged Door, Poor Customer Service, and No Resolution
I had a really bad experience with 1800GotJunk. I needed them to remove my refrigerator from my kitchen, and I left a hammer and screwdriver with the item to remove my door in case it didn't fit out. My brother was home to show them everything, but he's in a wheelchair and couldn't help. A man named Herman called me and I explained that I had left the tools in case he needed to remove my door. After the job was over, they called me from outside to take my payment over the phone. I specifically asked at that time if they had to remove my door. Herman then told me he did not have to remove my door, and then everything went well. I paid the $123 and change with my card over the phone and expected that to be the end.
When I got home, I found that they not only dented my door but gouged my $400 and change (more with installation) door in multiple areas. I called right then and there, and I was told I'd hear back within 24 hours. Three days went by, and I called back. I was told they were sorry and that they would send a message to Herman, who is apparently the manager, and have him contact me. Another week and a half went by, and I heard nothing. But I received an email from a woman who told me the case was going to be closed because no one had heard from me. I replied to the email that no one had contacted me, and I answered every call due to my business. Then I called the woman and explained everything to her. To my surprise, Herman said he contacted me multiple times, and I did not respond to him.
Surprisingly, he contacted me in the morning, but then proceeded to tell me that the screwdriver and hammer I left were not enough to remove a door. He got mad during the phone call when I told him that I have pictures and I want it replaced or I want the money to pay for the door and installation. He proceeded to try to say that my brother, who is in a wheelchair, told him he could not remove the door, and then hung up on me. I called back to 1800GotJunk flipping out on the way he handled things, and then I received a text message from him asking me for the door price and what it would take to fix it.
I sent all the information back, including a picture of the door with the price, and told him it needed to be installed as well. He said OK, somebody would come measure the door and get back to me. No one came, so I texted him again asking him when they were supposed to show up. He told me they already came and no one was home, but my brother, who's in a wheelchair, never leaves because we don't have a wheelchair ramp. He is always home! I explained that it was not even possible as somebody is always at my house, and I have two very large trained watchdogs who will alert the home to anybody there, especially that close to the door.
I then got a phone call later that night that somebody was on their way to come take a look at my door. I told them I would like them to leave the measurements they found with my brother and to let me know what's going on. The gentleman said OK and left. I had the measurements when I got home, and I was expecting a call to let me know when it would be done. Nothing came for about a month, so I texted Herman and asked him for an update. He ignored the text. I called the main number at the beginning of this week and was told that the franchise did not answer, but somebody would answer me by Wednesday at the latest. It is now Friday, and trying to sell my home and explain that I have a banged-up door because of idiots is not the easiest.
I have to contact the comptroller as well as an attorney to be able to get this fixed fast enough that I can sell this house and not be charged way more than needed for the door replacement! If I could give them zero stars or negative, I totally would, not just for the original experience but for every proceeding experience after that. This place is absolutely the worst company I've ever done business with!
Deceptive Pricing and Poor Service: A Review of 1800GotJunk in Columbus, OH
This company, 1800GotJunk, is a complete sham in the Columbus, OH area. I did some research on them and found out that many people have had poor experiences with their deceptive pricing practices. Their truck sizes are also very small, only 10 feet long x 5 feet wide x 5 feet tall. So when they quote you the "1/8 truck, 1/2 truck" thing, they are talking about a very small space.
They will quote you a price over the phone and then try to increase it significantly when they arrive by claiming that your junk takes up more space than they thought. They also show up with trucks that are already full of other people's junk, tell you those trucks are "only 1/2 full" when it's obviously nearly full and then try to charge you for 1 and 1/2 trucks when your junk doesn't fit in a whole truck.
They toss everything in, which means not only does everything get broken, it fills up the truck very quickly so you're paying for a bunch of empty space. Imagine if warehouses or airplanes were packed that way! They claim they "sweep up" after moving the items out but they don't. In fact, they'll dent your drywall, doors, scratch your floors and driveway but will get very angry if you point it out.
They DO NOT RECYCLE OR DONATE the items you have which is the sole reason I even chose this company. Instead, they'll deliberately destroy the furniture, dishes, toys, framed prints, etc by throwing them into the truck.
We had 22 years of items to get rid of as we were moving. We threw out everything that was unusable, broken, old papers, etc. before contacting 1-800-got-junk. We chose them over other similar services because they claim to sort through the items and donate/recycle anything that's usable.
We packaged up everything carefully, labeling items that were glass, framed art prints, toys in excellent condition with all the parts, books, CDs, DVDs, vinyl records, dishes, pots & pans, garden tools and furniture in good condition. Normally we would have donated these items to local charities but due to the short amount of time we have to get our home on the market, we called this company.
They told us that they charge by the amount of truck space your items take up and they quoted the highest amount would be $638 for a full truck. We agreed to a full truck and that price, stating anything that didn't fit, we'd take care of ourselves. They also said they'd sweep up after they were done and would recycle/donate any useful items.
When they arrived on Thursday, October 13th they had TWO trucks! One was 3/4 full and the other had a refrigerator in it. They told us we'd be paying for 1 and 1/2 trucks because "we don't get to tell them how many trucks they use". I told them I don't care how many trucks they use, but I am only paying for ONE empty truck, as agreed. The audacity of showing up with other people's junk, that they've already been paid for by those other people & trying to charge us for that AND our own stuff is a huge red flag.
The main guy began sulking and literally destroyed the furniture we had by tossing it as hard as possible into the truck. They don't pack the trucks neatly to provide more space, they toss everything in & charge you more (or try to). We had 1/2 a garage full (one layer) of usable items, a pickup truck amount of yard junk and 15 trash bags full of clothing, linens, toys, household items, working Xbox, Playstation, games, DVDs, CDs, kitchenware, small appliances and a few boxes with framed art prints.
All destroyed. They threw everything into the truck, glass breaking & it's clear it was all headed to the dump. Sulky guy (I will update with his name later) was on the phone with his boss after I called to complain about the pricing scam and he was told we'd only be paying what was agreed.
When they were finished, they left. No sweeping up, no checking if we were satisfied and, sadly for the other guy who just did what he was told, no tip.
Kyle was supposed to call us about our complaint, but he did not return our call. The local "corporate" manager - Rob Mitchell - laughed when we called to complain about the deceptive pricing, the broken items and lack of service, basically saying he couldn't care less.
Thankfully I paid with Amex so I'll be disputing this breach of contract.
In a day when we're told to care about the climate & environment, companies who do this should be fined heartily for taking perfectly good items that could be donated & sold to help others and filling our landfills with it.

Misleading Pricing and Inconsistent Service: My Experience with 1800 Got Junk
I recently contacted 1800 Got Junk to get rid of some household items as we were moving and downsizing. I made sure to mention the amount of stuff we had, including a twin mattress and box spring. The representative on the phone informed me that this sounded like a minimum load size and quoted me a price of $150.00. However, when the guy arrived to evaluate the amount of stuff we had, he quoted me a price of around $458-$488. I was shocked and reminded him of the $150.00 quote I had received on the phone. He laughed and told me that the $150.00 quote was only for one mattress and a plastic bin. He said that he has this conversation with people all the time and it's frustrating.
He also informed me that when you call the Canada call center, they will tell you anything to get your information and someone out to you. I understand that the price can vary when the guy comes to evaluate in person, but this was just reckless and a waste of everyone's time. I could have had the stuff gone a different route while waiting for my appointment. I was extremely frustrated with the whole experience and have been telling everyone I know that this company is shady.
Overall, I would not recommend 1800 Got Junk. Their pricing system seems to be misleading and inconsistent, and their customer service leaves a lot to be desired. If you're looking to get rid of some household items, I would suggest looking for a more reliable and transparent company.
Terrible Experience with Unprofessional Junk Removal Company: A Complete Bait and Switch
So, I had a couple of guys show up at my house without any warning, but luckily I had already prepared my garage for them. I moved my car out of the way so they could park their empty truck right up to the garage. I have a small garage, but the items I needed to get rid of only took up about a quarter of the space. I had five contractor bags that weighed less than 20 pounds each, an old push lawnmower, an old plastic filing cabinet, 10-12 empty collapsed boxes, a few old ceiling fan motors, two iron security bars, a glass and metal car door, and some old car exhaust parts.
The two guys just threw my items into their truck without any care, allowing the items to fill up the bottom of the massive dump truck bed. After only 4-5 minutes, they were done and tried to charge me almost $500 because they claimed the items I had almost filled up their entire truck. What a joke! If they had put the items in the bed properly, it would have taken up less than an eighth of the space.
I would not recommend using this service. The experience was nothing like what the website promised. The two drivers were even adjusting my price based on how much I tipped them. The more I tipped, the less I had to pay for the items being removed. It's a complete bait and switch. This company is terrible.
Beware of this dishonest company - they didn't finish the job and asked for a tip!
This company is not very good. My husband called them to come to our house and take away some stuff we didn't need anymore. He told them to send an empty truck, but when the two guys arrived, they said the truck was already 2/3 full. They said they had to go empty it and come back. They said it would cost between 800 and 1000 dollars. When they came back, they asked for a tip, but we didn't know we were supposed to give them one. My husband said to give them 50 dollars, but when I tried to do that, the lowest amount was 93 or 98 dollars more. I was surprised when they left and we found out they didn't finish the job. They said it was more work than they thought it would be. We called them several times, but all they said was they shouldn't have asked for a tip and they would give us the extra money back. Now we have to find another company to finish the job. This company is not honest. Don't use them.

Disappointing Service from 1800GOTJUNK: Overcharged and Poor Customer Service
Last August, we decided to hire 1800GOTJUNK (Louisville Metro location) to remove our shed. We got a quote of around $500 over the phone, and we booked an appointment. On the day of the appointment, two men arrived, but they were not prepared to do the work. They gave us a quote of $1200, which was way more than what we were expecting. They also mentioned that the call center shouldn't give quotes over the phone. We were frustrated, so we called the manager to complain. The manager also said that the call center shouldn't give quotes over the phone. He gave us a flat fee of $1000, which was based on filling two trucks. He also said that he would adjust the price if the job was easier than expected. We agreed to the price since we needed the shed removed before the new one arrived the following morning.
On the day of the removal, the first truck was only half full when they finished. The second truck arrived on site, but it had someone else's stuff in it. It was only 1/4 full when they finished. We called the manager to ask for a price adjustment, but he refused to give us a refund. He didn't even respond to our calls. We tried to resolve the issue with customer service, but they were not helpful. They even ignored our BBB complaint. We provided the BBB with all the photos and security camera videos from the job. We were also disappointed that they took our landscape bricks, which we asked them twice to save for us.
We feel that we shouldn't have been charged for two full trucks when neither one was half full. The company's call center gives you a bogus quote over the phone, but the local company doesn't really care or bother to do anything about it. We were disappointed with the service we received from 1800GOTJUNK. We hope that they will improve their customer service in the future.
Unreliable and Unprofessional: My Experience with 1800GotJunk
I gotta say, I wouldn't recommend 1800GotJunk to anyone. You book with some big shot in a fancy office, but then they hand the job off to some local franchisee who doesn't seem to care about customer service. When I hired them to clear out my late brother's Manhattan apartment, I made sure to list every single item that needed to be removed. But when the truck arrived, it was already mostly full and the guy told me they couldn't take everything. I had to make another appointment and pay for another week of rent in the apartment because of what they called a "miscommunication" between the booker and the franchisee. And when we complained, they didn't seem to care. One of their bookers told my husband they'd give us 20% off on the second date, but then they lied to American Express and said they never promised that. And their workers damaged the elevator door and the apartment door, but then lied about it and wanted "proof" that they did it. It's just one lie after another with these guys. I wouldn't recommend them to anyone. Any company is fine if you don't have a problem, but since there are often problems, I wouldn't use this company ever again.
Terrible Experience with 1800GotJunk: Late, Unprofessional, and Overpriced
I gotta say, my experience with 1800GotJunk was not great. I mean, if I could give them a negative star review, I totally would. They were like, 6 hours late and didn't even bother to call me and let me know what was going on. I had to call customer service like, 3 times just to get some kind of update, and every time they gave me some lame excuse and told me the truck would be there in an hour. What a bunch of baloney! And seriously, isn't it like, their job to keep me in the loop about when they're gonna show up? I didn't get a single call from them. Not one!
So, when the truck finally did arrive, 6 HOURS LATE mind you, the driver was a total jerk. He tried to pull a fast one on me and jack up the price, like I'm some kind of sucker or something. I mean, come on! I finally agreed to a price that I still think was way too expensive, but I had no choice because I needed to clear out my mom's apartment that day. And to top it all off, they were super careless when they were loading the truck and ended up breaking a glass top that shattered all over the parking lot. What a mess!
Honestly, if you've got all the time in the world and money to burn, go ahead and hire these guys. But if you're like me and you actually care about getting good service and not getting ripped off, look for a company that actually gives you a contract before they do the job. Because with 1800GotJunk, it's like, no contract, no responsibility. They just don't care. And let me tell you, I am one seriously disgruntled and non-returning customer.
Beware of 1800GotJunk - A Total Rip-Off!
My name's Marcia, and I recently had an experience with 1800GotJunk that I just have to share. I called them up on July 13th to get a quote for picking up an old TV and stand that I needed to get rid of. They gave me a quote of $130+, which seemed reasonable enough, so I made an appointment for the next day.
I made sure to tell the representative that I live in a three-story townhouse, just to make sure they knew what they were getting into. They assured me that it wouldn't be a problem, so I felt pretty good about it.
The next day, a three-man crew showed up to take care of things. I took the guy in charge upstairs to show him the TV and stand, which were both pretty old and heavy. He took one look at it and told me it would cost $600 to take it away. I was shocked - that was nowhere near the quote they had given me!
I told him as much, and he asked me how much they had quoted me. I said $135, and he said he could do it for $500. I told him I couldn't afford that, and he asked me how much I could afford. I said $200, and he said he'd have to call his boss.
He left for about ten minutes, and when he came back, he said his boss had said $500 was the best they could do. I said no, and he told me that if I could get someone to take it downstairs and put it on the curb, they would come back and pick it up for $200.
I was pretty upset by this point - it felt like a total rip-off. After they left, I called my handyman and asked him to come by. He and his friend took the TV and stand to Goodwill for me, and I gave them each $50. It was money well spent, in my opinion.
I have to say, I'm really disappointed with 1800GotJunk. They're a big rip-off, and I wouldn't recommend them to anyone. If you need to get rid of something, call your local handyman or even the guy on the street corner with a sign - anyone but these guys.
Mixed Experience with 1800GotJunk: Polite Service, but Vague and High Pricing
I recently gave 1800GotJunk a call to remove a few items from my sister's home. I was informed that the minimum charge would be $179, but the price could go up to around $750 depending on the tiered system they have in place. Apparently, there are 13 tiers in total.
The next morning, they arrived at my sister's home bright and early, and we were their first call of the day. Everything seemed to be going well until they provided me with a quote. The initial quote was very vague, stating that it could be as much as $750. I was taken aback and asked if they were going to charge me the top rate for just a few items. They responded by saying that it could be the maximum amount, but I insisted on getting the exact amount so that I could make an informed decision. They had to call their supervisor to review the pricing, and I was given the phone to speak to the supervisor on speakerphone. The supervisor started at $650, which I felt was too high, and he began to give me another number. I finally told him that I didn't have time to play games and asked for the final amount. The price they gave me was $350, which I didn't accept because I had received a better estimate the previous day. The supervisor wasn't willing to come down to my number, so we didn't make a deal.
The two men who came to my sister's home were polite and punctual, but I felt that the pricing was too high. If you're considering using this company, make sure you get a good quote before they start. It's important to know the exact amount you'll be charged so that you can make an informed decision.
Poor Customer Service and Late Arrival: My Experience with 1800GotJunk at Lake George/Queensbury Location
I recently had an appointment with 1800GotJunk at the Lake George/Queensbury location. Unfortunately, my two-hour window was not met and I received no notification. I called four times from within the time window and after, but was told by the main number that the franchisee would contact me. However, I did not receive any call. It was only after my fourth call that the franchise finally contacted me. They explained that anyone can put in an order for any time and a local Marshall's store put in the same time with more trucks. Marshall's business is clearly better than my single truck, so why honor the appointment that was made a week earlier?
They also stated that there was no cell service from the truck, but somehow the truck could notify the franchise that they were running late. However, the franchise couldn't reach out to me to keep me informed. The truck arrived one and a half hours late and offered a $50 discount on a $750 truck. The haulage fee for a TV was $50 each and a mattress was $50. A local competitor charges $25 for each of these, so clearly another money grab from 1-800. I refused the service.
My time is as valuable as any customer's, even a Marshall's customer. So, the commitment to customer service is minimal. The franchise also agreed that not contacting a customer is poor customer service, but so what? I wasted literally a day travelling out of state to arrive on site at the agreed time, with no communication and a 5.5% discount offer on a $900 fee. Clearly, there are other options, and clearly, 1-800 Got Junk from the franchise level at Lake George and corporate level needs to improve their customer service. I needed to call them four times and got no assistance until almost one hour after the timeframe expired.
Mixed Experience with 1800GotJunk: Friendly Staff but No-Show and Frustration
I called up 1800GotJunk for a Saturday appointment and was greeted by Jesse and Andrew, who were both very friendly. They took a small load that day and promised to come back on Monday for the rest. I was impressed that they didn't try to take more than they could handle. On Monday, they arrived at 9:15 and filled up the truck twice. However, they had to stop because the dumps were closing early that day. I spoke to the manager, Sam, and we scheduled another appointment for the following Friday.
Unfortunately, Friday came and went with no call and no show from the crew. I tried calling Sam and Andrew, but couldn't get through to either of them. Feeling frustrated, I had no choice but to call corporate to get some answers. Sam eventually called me back and apologized for the no-show. He explained that they were understaffed and had run out of time due to the early closing of the dumps. We rescheduled for the following Wednesday and I made it clear that I needed them to be there when I got home from work.
Wednesday arrived and I waited patiently for the crew to arrive between 2 pm and 4 pm. When they didn't show up, I called corporate again and spoke to Sam. He promised to send his crew over right away and they finally arrived at 4:25 pm. Sharkeem and Will were the ones who showed up and they worked quickly to get the job done. By 5 pm, they had finally finished clearing out the rest of the junk.
Despite the setbacks and the high quote, I was disappointed that I didn't receive any discount for the inconvenience and frustration. I'm not sure if I would use this service again in the future. While the gentlemen who came to my house were all very nice, the no-call, no-show was really upsetting and made me feel unimportant. I think that no matter what the circumstances are, someone should have called to check on the job and make sure it was getting done. Overall, I wish I could have given a better review, but unfortunately, I can't.
Pricing
Arranged for BBQ grill hauling from my house. Spoke with Mesa on June 5, 2022. She quoted $68 flat with no hidden fees. Offered $13 same day discount but no delivery available. Ethan picked up grill and insisted pricing $80 though minimum is $99. What a scam.
Complaint by: Ozzie Arroyo. They know my mobile.
Desired outcome: Honor pricing with promos.
junk pickup
On February 20 at 2 pm, a two person team we hired via GotJunk overcharged us and your advertising misled us. Your ads say prices begin at $129. We arranged the job via your 1800 line. Your franchisee, who introduced himself as DeShaun, said they begin at $275. They were hired to dispose of plastic tubs and other small furniture underneath our deck. They looked at the job and gave us an estimate of $475-515. We thought this was outrageous and tried to call your main office. DeShaun said, "They're just a bunch of guys in Toronto. You won't get them."
We had believed your advertising and as a result did not contact your competitors and now were under the gun to get this done. Despite our misgivings, we went ahead. The job took less than half an hour. They billed us $515. And they were nasty. I know I could have had this done for at most $300 by our handymen. We got taken.
Mr. Scudinare and Mr. St. James, I will await a rapid response from you before I decide whether to share this experience acorss social media.
Desired outcome: Refund--and corrections in your future advertising
treatment of employees
Most of these complaints are about their services, but I have to address the way the employees are treated. They work 12-14 hours a day without being allowed any kind of break. The trucks have GPS so boss knows if you do. They are forced to drive unsafe trucks that now have cameras in the cab so they can watch and hear everything while the drive. The worst is the employees are forced to remove carpet and mattresses that are crime scenes or from a suicide. Covered in human blood, feces, bones and brain matter. Because of this, they dont keep employees long enough for them to be trained and the ones who stay, are treated horribly. I'm sure with a new boss, the company could have loyal, caring employees
unacceptable time management
Made reservations on 8/30/19 for removal on 10/11/19 between 8:30 am - 10:30 am According to my email appointment confirmation I will receive a call 15-30 minutes before my promise time to let me know the trucks expected time of arrival. The first call from the truck team (Michael) at 8:13 am. Second call with the truck team at 8:22 am to notify me that the current job their on has caused a delay therefore my ETA will now be 12:45 pm - 1:45 pm. Im not understanding with a big company to have only one truck for Orange County, CA?!?! Now its 1:50 pm, After several calls made to both the company, no resolution just numerous apologizes. Tried calling the truck team cell, No response straight to voicemail. Its now 2:30 pm! After cancelling my appointment the truck pulls up. Your company is horrible! I took a day off work for my appointment (lost a day wages). Its already stressful when moving with a family and senior parents, your company added more stress. Your company's time management and services is unacceptable. I have filed a customer complaint (case number [protected]).
removal of a shed/building
1800Got Junk was hired to remove an old shed/fishing shanty, a project that they accepted without qualification but proved incapable of doing professionally.
The building was torn down using a sledge hammer which broke all of the windows, leaving shards of grass scattered about the site. It also resulted in the shingled roof being pulverized into too many small pieces.
My wife and I spent an hour picking the shards of glass and shingle pieces before we noticed they had thrown cinder blocks (from the base of the building), stove pipe and large sheets of wood into an adjacent swamp area.
A call to the company resulted in a visit from a supervisor and then an employee who picked up the swamp.and made a futile effort to rake the small stuff from the area.
Days later we found the 6" X 8" beans that were supporting the building were thrown into a different area of the swamp. The irony of this is that it took two men to carry the beans right past the waiting truck and thru some thick brush to get to the place where they were left.
A second call to the company has not been returned.
We trusted the company and the employees and did not inspect the sight before paying the bill. Our mistake.
couch removal
They showed up in a tiny truck, told me my sectional and coffee table would take up half the truck $445! Really? Thats if it was set up as if it was in my living room maybe. Oh and it was in a garage. So no hassles moving into the truck. I felt scammed. Waist of my time off of work. I was furious. They told me it was a 10 foot truck. Thats funny I moved in my whole 1 bedroom apt ( with that sectional and coffee table on board) in a 15 foot truck. I was quoted on the phone $150 -$175.
1800 got junk removal
We had a house to clear out, 1800GotJunk came out and charged $1600 to clean out just the kitchen (1 table and then cupboards content and miscellaneous) the men said it took them 3 loads. We confirmed with new owners of the house that only one load was taken and when we called 1800 Got Junk about it they stated it was because it was heavy so it counted as three loads and we were charged accordingly. There were no appliances to move and mostly food garbage or dishes. And their website clearly states it is charged based on how much of their truck is filled.
They quoted $9, 000 to finish the job and were going to come back in a few days. Instead we brought our own trailer and took 2 loads and had another junk company come and take the entire basement (Rec room, and two large storage rooms) so probably 4 times the amount of stuff that was up in the kitchen that 1800 Got Junk took and they completed that job in 2 loads and charged $1100.
We were ripped off by 1800 Got Junk. They lied about their pricing layout.
Spoke with owner. Cleared up misunderstanding with pricing and she investigated the situation to find there was an error in our fees. Refund was issued. I am in the process of trying to have this complaint removed. Complaint board does not make it easy to remove a complaint, which isn’t really fair.
trucks, 6 hour delay
I was in a position that I needed to clean up an apartment I cannot do it myself. I had no idea that the one 800 got junk has tons of franchises in the area. I called the main number they sent it to the one close to the area and then I got calls from three or four different individual franchises and they were all coming at different times. the main number didn't even put it in the first time that was a two hour delay and it turned into a six hour delay but it was too late for me to call anyone else because it was late at night and I needed to get it done. Their charges and surcharges are usury and were not initially part of the deal. I was told it didn't matter how long it took us . It would be a set amount to fill up the truck of $600 and I received a fee of 1000. Disputed with my credit card company. 1 800 got junk lied and said I received $100 credit that was not a credit that was a surcharge which should not have been on there to begin with. Don't ever use them before for their tricks. I'm taking it to the next level.
junk removal
Customer Service could not provide me with an accurate estimate despite me providing the cubic volume of ways to be disposed of. I informed customer service of all the contents to be disposed of including scrap pavers.
When the truck arrived the driver could not provide me with an accurate estimate as well. However they then informed me that the pavers would be a surcharge due to the weight however I was expressly told by customer service that the cost was based on volume in the truck only and weight did not matter. The driver kept changing the price throughout the loading process as he kept referring to his sheet yet his back pocket and trying to "guess" what he wanted to charge me.
I spent the time to break down the waste into small uniform sections so that the truck could be loaded efficiently. However all three workers were tossing the waste in the back of the truck haphazardly from a distance wasting significant room in the front of the bed. I honestly feel this was a tactic to use as much space as possible as it look like a giant heap of firewood by the time they were done.
After arguing with the driver about taking the small stack of bricks driver finally agreed but want to still charge an extra amount. Ultimately I paid the driver to remove the bricks however all they did was toss it into the back which I ended up filling the gaps in the heap anyways.
Throughout the process there was a significant disconnect between customer service the driver and even the other workers as each person was telling me different prices along the way. At one point I asked one of the workers to take a couple extra bricks I had around the corner and I was told that would not be a problem however the driver then told me we can't do it and I would have to pay for another trip.
junk removal
I called 1800GotJunk to remove a queen bed and couch from a 500 sq ft apt in Miami. I was told pricing for that will start at $138. The lady then asked me if there is anything else I'd like to add, and I listed a handful of other items, but said the most important thing is the bed and couch since it's difficult for me to handle myself. The men arrived to my apartment and told me everything would be $600. I said i'm sorry, but that's too high. I said let's just get rid of the big items like the bed and couch as originally discussed. They then told me that the bed and couch would be $300 and showed me a sheet with itemized pricing. I told them sorry, but i can't and wish I was told that over the phone when I called originally. I then called the company to see what happened and the agent on the phone was rude and argumentative. All I wanted to know why I was quoted $138 when the total price upon arrival was $300. The agent's only answer was that I'm wrong and they're right. To be honest, I've never been spoken to by anyone in this manner before in my life.
Either give me pricing or don't, but telling someone pricing for a queen bed and couch starts at $138, when it's really $300, is deceptive. This company LITERALLY has an itemized price sheet with things like bed, couch, table, etc yet doesn't tell you on the phone. There's no excuse for this type of bait and switch. Instead they say $138 so you book them and then hope you'll pay the extra after you've taken time of your day to meet their workers. Skip these guys and go with a company that's more transparent with their pricing and also workers that don't argue with their customers.
