Worst ever!!
I have ordered a book from AbeBooks as a birthday present for my brother. The book was quite a rare one and when I found it on AbeBooks I was extremely happy. I made my order, paid for the book and that was it. They never delivered my order! My brother's birthday was two weeks ago and he did not receive his present! Since it was a preset for a dear person I ordered in advance to be sure that it will be delivered on time. I'm very disappointed with AbeBooks!
Didn't receive my order
I did not received my order and there is absolutely no way to contact customer service. Yes, they have a phone number and email, but they continue to ignore me! I have ordered 5 books from AbeBooks company and I was shocked when I did not receive anything. I thought this was a reliable and trustworthy company and before I made my order I checked the reviews and there was many positive ones and that is what fooled me. Order was placed about a month ago. Seems like AbeBooks is just a scam.
Dishonest seller - extremely unreliable
Very dishonest bookseller. Ordered a set of books listed on Biblio.com. Books never arrived. I contacted seller who did offer refund or reship. As the price was very good, I asked for reship. They said they had none in stock and it could be quite some time before the books would be available. I said that was fine. They never did reship the books and are now hiding under the Biblio policy of no refund after 30 days of shipping. This was not mentioned at the time when they said it could be quite some time to reship the books. Seems like a way to steal money from honest buyers. I have no refund and no books. These sellers are active on Alibris, Biblio, Abe Books. Beware.

Gives FAKE tracking numbers
This bookseller gives fake tracking numbers. I ordered a book 10 days ago and the shipping information they provided was from Mumbia, India.
I then called the phone number for the company on Alibris.com and I was told that the tracking information was incorrect! I have yet to obtain correct tracking information.
The complaint has been investigated and resolved to the customer’s satisfaction.
I ordered a 7-volume set from them 6 weeks back. They sent only a single volume from the set. I have been trying for the past month to get them to send the promised RMA for me to return the volume. From the comments here, it appears that it will still be a struggle even if they ever do send the RMA.
I ordered a 6 volume set of books from this dealer almost three months ago and received a single unrelated volume. I contacted the company, scanned the cover and isbn and returned the book in its original packing. The post office confirmed the book was received back a month and a half ago. In spite of several attempts, including contacting ABE through whom I ordered the original item, I keep getting the same BS about verifying the returned item and have not been reimbursed my money. It also operates under the names Ergode and ExtremelyReliable and is really a book jacker that should be avoided (http://www.zubalbooks.com/article-bookjacking.jsp).
Extremely Reliable is a book jacker -- an entity that owns no inventory -- simply lists other seller's copies as their own at greatly marked-up prices. They are a notorious outfit among legitimate book dealers as they often submit "not received" claims to obtain free books. Their price-gouging hurts buyers who are not familiar with how to find the lowest item cost online and the buyer often gets a library discard instead of the Very Good copy they ordered. Extremely Reliable goes under many different names online -- Ergode, Amitcj, Fast Media and Daily Deals. Steer clear of this shyster.
No support and books are in bad condition
Don’t buy books from the website www.abebooks.co.uk. The description of the state didn’t match with the real state of books. I believed that they sell books in good condition and ordered two from them, but they sent me terrible books and when I tried to contact them I was seriously disappointed. Their support team didn’t reply and you could send them tons of emails, but nothing. Not recommended website, as well post comments about your experience with them.

CAUTION: I experienced a major price change - without any alert. Chose a book at US$ 80, 00. Price changed to US$ 290, 00 when the item was placed in the shopping basket. No notification - no alert!

Wow. Sounds like flat out fraud to me.
Especially since AbeBooks automatically sorts the books from lowest to highest in price when they are searched, meaning, the cheapest book is the first book that will be listed but then when you put it in the cart it increases more than 300 percent? That's ridiculous.
And very very very advantageous to that bookseller who lists his books at a ridiculously low price in order to get excellent placement on the page, and then more than triples the price when you put it in the basket to purchase it! That's flat out FRAUD.
Never received the book that I ordered on Feb. 5,2012 and it's March 22,2012 They charged my credit card, but I never received the book.
I oredered the book The Man Who Rode Midnight by Elmer Kelton on Feb. 5, 2012 and I was sent a notice with a tracking number by email stating that the book had shipped and I would receive it ON/Before February 26, 2012. Howeve it is now March 22, 2012 and I haven't received it yet. I tried to contact them on the request return/refund button that is displayed on the order details page, but no luck. They did charge my credit card as soon as I placed the order and the bill has already been paid. I am very upset with this so called company. I hope that others will read my comment as well as the other comments before they purchase from them. In my opionion they are a crooked outfit. I shall never ordered from them again and I'll tell all of my family and friends to avoid them like the plague.
Customer Service
No apologies from Abebooks when shipment of books I was selling back in their buyback program was lost enroute. After numerous calls and a couple of e-mails, I was really ticked off and used the words "pissed off" in one of my e-mail correspondences. Apparently, it is deemed by Abebooks as a "curse word" so now you're informed. Then, Abebooks proceeded to tell me, or rather scold me, in their email back to me...still with no apologies! I don't swear, but apparently I did! My friends had a good laugh over this!

Horrible Service
Lost money. Ordered a book which I never recieved, e-mailed the bookseller was told I would get a refund, which I didn't. I called Abe Books and asked for the phone # of the seller, was told there was none (unbelievable). Rip off/scam/ thieves
I m a student and bought a expansive book from AbeBooks.com to try and save some much needed money.I sent an immediate payment and I never have recieved the book or a refund because the seller has resold the book multiple times so that the tracking number I got to track my book noted that my item is already delivered to some other person in Missisippi. I live in Illinois, no where near and have never been to Missisippi. I called the postal office and was told whos name was on the package. This company is a rip off and I will never again buy anything from people like this. I work hard for my money and needed that book, but its ok i wil manage to buy a different one, I just hope that who ever stole my money will need this for his medicine on their death bed. ###!

Rip off
I sold back numerous college text books and received a check in the mail for 1/3 of the amount that should have been given. I was told they only received 5 of 7 books and the two that were missing were the most expensive and the largest. It seemed like quite a coincidence that the most expensive books went missing when they were all shipped in the same box. Nowhere on the website is a valid number to call without leaving a message. I asked numerous times for a phone number to speak with someone and was rudely ignored. Failed to return calls, would only email and supplied horrible and untrustworthy service.
Cancel and Refund Process
This was my second and last time using the abebooks service.
On the 4th of March I bought (and payed) a book from abebooks from the seller WORLDOFBOOKS.COM on a Friday at 20:00H.
However after 40 minutes I find out that I order an old edition, and I Tried to cancel my order. Well here is where this service shows everything, they clearly say this:

Description: This book is in stock and will ship within 24 hours from our warehouse in the UK.
As you can see the shipping will only occurs after 24 hours, however this gentlemen changed the status of my order to shipped after 40 minutes on a FRIDAY! The reason for this status is the fact that abebooks have in their policy that when a seller ships an item the order can not be canceled! At the same moment I tried to contact bought the seller and the Abebooks. I only got a response on Monday (offcourse) saying that the item were shipped and there wasn't anything to do.
Well then, in my ingenuity I waited for the book that took 3 weeks TO arrive! When I received the book on 24 of March I started the refund process and I spent 13 € sending the book (sent in April 13th) in a registered mail (the book cost me 25 €) for tracking the package.
I then emailed abebooks requesting for the seller to pay my shipping cost since it was unfair that I have to pay something that I didn't got a chance to cancel in 40 minutes after my order!
The reply was that it was unfair for the seller! For abebooks the sellers are more important that customers.
Unfortunately the UK mailling service is very bad and only now (07th May) I received the confirmation that the seller got the book on April 17th. Since I didn't know if they got the book or not I didn't requested my money till now.
But I provided the tracking number for the seller and abebooks.
However, they know that I didn't know if the book was delivery so they didn't said anything and not even abebooks.
I HAD TO SEND AN EMAIL AGAING TO REQUEST MY MONEY BACK TODAY AFTER MORE THAN 15 days after they received my book!
So my advice is use other sites like amazon (I never had refund problems with them!) or even Ebay. If you must use abebooks be SURE when buying because when you click to buy you have no CHANCE TO cancel your order.
Deceptive practices
These people are facilitators of fraud and deceptive practices, if not frauds themselves. First order I placed they charged my credit card immediately. A few days later I got confirmation from one of their alleged reseller that the book had shipped and a postal tracking number. Found out that someone hacked my account and spent £650! Thankfully my bank got a refund but trying to contact abebooks themselves has become fruitless. Their "security" is atrocious. No confirmation sent to my email address of a change in email address, just it's been changed. NEVER USE THESE CHARLATANS!
Horrible customer service. Never received book. The seller on their site has a bad online reputation for not completing their orders or sending another product. Abebooks says their sellers are vetted, but this is not true. Go to Amazon where your order will be completed or refunded without going through a month of phone calls/emails.
