Today I received a letter from a collection agency called Afni, Inc. alleging I owed $63.00 from 11 years ago - 1996. Verizon has provided my phone service for the past 10 years and I don't believe I have ever missed a payment. They never once mentioned I owed them a cent from 1996 and even sent me a refund for overpayment when I moved out of Verizon's service area in 2006. When I called Afni, Inc, a particularly rude young female told me she wasn't interested in anything I had to say. I hung up and will be filling complaints with the NYC Dept. of Consumer Affairs, NY Attorney General, IL Dept. of Consumer Affairs, IL Attorney General, and the IL and NY State Bar Associations. If we band together we can stop these gluttons and put their management and employees behind bars where they belong. I also may send letters to the NY Times, Daily News, and Post. I'm sure Ruppert would get a charge out of organizing a national multimillion dollar class action suit.

Please be advised that this company is a junk debt buyer. They buy your account for pennies on the dollar and then try to charge you whatever they want to charge you.

DO NOT under any circumstances pay them any money as someone else also stated! You DO NOT owe them anything.

Write them a letter, tell them that you know that they are a junk debt buyer and that they are on the junk debt buyer list (google junk debt buyers you will find the website with their name on it). Advise them to not contact you again about this debt as you owe them nothing. Tell them that if they do contact you that you will report them to the FTC, BBB and your State AG. I guarantee you that they will not contact you again. We had to do this with a person posing as an attorney by the name of Borak. He never contacted us again. Please be advised that this instruction to write the letter was by direction of an attorney.

Good Luck and definitely check out your State Statutes of Limitations. You will be surprised as to what these bill collectors try to do that is illegal including the ones that are not junk debt buyers.

I too am pursuing this Company tomorrow on a cease and decist letter.

Hi, I was just able to successfully dismiss 2 faulty claims brought on by Afne collection services. Here are the things you can do.
1. I contacted someone at the consumer protection agency directly because I was under the impression that AFNI was getting investigated for misconduct, he told me that they weren't but that he has had a meeting with them and gave me a direct number for a person at AFNI to contact. When I called this person I told her that Consumer services gave me her phone number and that the claim against me was false, she immediately removed the claim against me and sent me a letter confirming so. if you want to try contacting her about your bill here is her information: Lisa Anderson AFNI [protected] (ext.3066)
2.if you receive a letter from Afne with a claim that is not valid them don't wait, you have to dispute the claim within 30 days, respond to them during that time VIA REGISTERED MAIL letting them know that you are disputing the validity of this debt. Check your records to see if you have any documentation confirming your claim, but if you don't it's ok.
3. immediately contact the office of the Attorney General, consumer protection division. Write them a letter stating your AFNI account number and describing the situation. Consumer Protection Division
Office of the Attorney Genera, 500 Second Street, Springfield, IL 62706.

I received a notice from this company for $1377.85 for an account that is 15 years old. I contacted them and received a very rude young man. I stated to him that this account was well beyond the statute of limitation for my state and was told that it did not mean they could not collect. I am pretty sure that this might be a number I had 15 years ago and I'm also pretty sure it was paid however I have no way to prove that I paid the account. I am sending them a letter of dispute and will notify the credit agencies if this account appears as I have been checking legalities of old debt and found that they cannot report an old debt to the credit bureau if you notify them you are disputing the charges as the debt is too old. I too just bought a house and a new van so I would have thought something like this would have affected my ability to do so. This is frustrating as they have now begun to contact me and hassle me for payment. I know that making any commitment to pay this debt will allow them to start the clock over. Does anyone have a suggestion on how to get them off my back. I mean 15 years ago how crazy is that?

I got a similar bill from AFNI for $33. They said it came from Verizon bill back in 2002. However, in 2002, I was not in the country. I left the country in 2001 and does not understand if I owed this bill infact nor if the 7 year statute of limitiatons had already expired.

However, my credit card company (Wells Fargo) has seen this negative report and reduced my account balance and is threatening to close my account all together.

I need help.

GO TO [redacted] .com and tell your story there than go and contact the local reporters at your local newspapers and get them to start a buzz this type of scam can be classified as IDENTITY THEFT as in AFNI has fraudulently misrepresented you and your personal information in an attempt to make $$$ illegally.. contact the ATTORNEY in your state and city and keep writing letters until you crush this bug.. also go directly to their website and contact them... headquarters call the local newspaper in the city they are based in and ask why they get away with this? send all these complains and all the rest you can collect to your local newspaper and to the newspaper in AFNI's home base home city..

I received a Settlement Offer in the mail (mailed to my parent's address) stating that they would take a settlement payment for a bill that I KNOW I paid off over 7 years ago. I called and talked to a lady named Sue at the Afni collections agency. She was nice, but when I told her that I don't have any proof documentation to give to them...she stated that she would put in an inquiry to investigate and that I would no longer need to call back. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE...if you receive a settlement notice or bill after at least 8-10 years after you have paid the bill- call them and demand an investigation. If I have to involve my lawyer I will. I am not going to pay this bill twice. And furthermore, I think this is a total scam- how am I supposed to know to keep records of a bill that paid off when I was 19 years old...with a money order no less. I demanded that if this was truly a bill that has no record of me paying...that GTE themselves must send me a copy of all attempts to receive payment. A settlement bill is usually sent after several attempts to collect the original payment. This is the first bill that I have received in about 8 years...and it's not from GTE. This is so stupid...I don't need this crap and neither should anyone else. Please be aware that I do believe this is a scam to get people to just send their money in...besides when is the last time you ever questioned a collection agency when they asked for payment?

I too have received a second bill from Afni, Inc claiming I owe a sprint bill for $249.14. I've never used sprint in my life. Its shame that we the public have to deal with things like this in america. If the agencies that american citizens pay for don't act and do what they are suppose to, than who can we depend on. I hate to say this but if white american turns its back on its mothers and put up with idiots like bush what do you expect. Now all of a sudden we have to worry about fraud running crazy, everyone’s buying security protection on things that once was protected by the company’s we trusted and vested in, I’m not surprised we have this problem. We have a world that is run by whites, we have a country that whites make the rules, and we have amendments that allow those rules to be altered. Laws that keeps whites out of situations that we as americans should know is nothing but a loop hole for the rich and the crook it . All those agencies mentioned in a comment (NYC Dept. of Consumer Affairs, NY Attorney General, IL Dept. of Consumer Affairs, IL Attorney General, and the IL and NY State Bar Associations) on here should do their part and find these people but remember they don’t want that because it brings them money. I’m with you but good luck. I’m filling here in MD as well and I’m going after Sprint because they are big enough to go after this people once we complain and the count is in the thousands.
PS
I'm not talking about little white people like U who are reading this

Confirmation code is incorrect or too old
this is what i'm talking about 956ca how simple is this
they (Here) just got info on your computer
i had to enter three different codes, why i can read

The same thing happened to us, we lived in New York from 1995 to 2001 and we use the same phone number and the phone line was disconected in April 2001 (we moved to another state) and we never missed any phone bill payments, and we got a letter from afni lately claim that we owe verizon $59.35 in May 1999 and we never received notice from Verizon regrading this amount overdue, and we paid off our last phone bill in may 2001 and account was closed at that time, if anybody file claim against afni, we would like to join you and put this cheating agency behind the bar!

I also received a collection notice from Afni claiming I have an unpaid bill from Verizon. I found a forum where this guy had his whole letter of dispute on the forum. It had alot of legal stuff in it, so I copied the letter, changed some things that pertains to my case and sent it certified, return receipt and a week later, which is today, I received a letter stating that they closed the account, informed all credit bureaus agencies to remove it from my credit report. Also, they apologized for any inconvenience they may have caused.

Here's the letter:

To Afni, Inc.:

This letter is being sent to you in response to a letter I received from your company on January 30, 2008.

Be advised, this is a notice that your claim is disputed.

Under the Fair Debt Collections Practices Act (FDCPA), I have the right to request validation of the debt you say I owe you. I am requesting proof that I am indeed the party you are asking to pay this debt, and there is some contractual obligation which is binding on me to pay this debt. Please be advised that validation is not a request for verification or proof of my mailing address but proper, complete and competent evidence that I have any legal obligation to pay you.

Your legal staff will agree that compliance with this request is required under the laws of New York State and Federal Statutes.

In addition, please attach copies of:

*Agreement with your client that grants you the authority to collect on this alleged debt, or proof of acquisition by purchase or assignment.

*Agreement that bears the signature of the alleged debtor wherein he or she agreed to pay the creditor.

*Proof that the Statute of Limitations has not expired on the alleged account

Please also be advised that this letter is not only a formal dispute, but a request that you cease and desist any and all collection activities. This consists of the listing or furnishing of any information to a credit reporting repository that could be inaccurate or invalidated or verifying an account as accurate when in fact there is no provided proof it is.

I require compliance with the terms and conditions of this letter within 30 days from the date you receive it, or a complete withdrawal, in writing, of any claim.

Also, use this correspondence as a request that no telephone contact be made to me by your offices to my home. If your office(s) attempt telephone communication with me, including but not limited to computer generated calls, calls or written correspondence sent to any third part, it will be considered harassment. Any and all future communication with me must be done in writing and sent via the United States Postal Service to the address listed in the header of this note.

In the event of noncompliance, I reserve the right to file charges and/or complaints with appropriate County, State & Federal authorities, the BBB and State Bar associations for violations of the FDCPA, FCRA, and Federal and State statutes on fraudulent extortion.

I also hereby reserve my right to take private civil action against you to recover damages.

I got a free credit report and on it was a bill from afni for 404.00 I thought it was a mistake and disputed through expedian. They informed me that the bill was accurate and that I needed to contact Charter communications to have it removed from my credit report. I contacted Charter Communications and they told me that they had no record of that account and that I needed to contact AFNI. I contacted AFNI and they told me it was abill from an address that I havent lived at since 1995. I told them that i would contact my attorney and have her deal with this. The date of the open account on my credit report was10/2006 they also said it was in my ex- husbands last name. I told them I remarried in 2005. So this bill could not possibly be mine. I also told them that Charter said that they had no record of this account. Im sending it to my attorney to deal with because unfortunatly for AFNI I also filed Bankruptcy in 10/2006. Sorry ###s but you done broke the law

I'm yet another victim to this ### company. I received a notice from them back in September. It was for over $300, so I figured I'd pay them when I got my tax return. I filled out the check, but something just wasn't sitting right with me about this. While the copy of the bill they sent me was legit, I didn't know why they hadn't contacted me in all these months to harass me whether it me mail or phone. I contacted Verizon about the bill, and they had nothing. I figured this, b/c I checked my 3 credit reports back in 2005, and nothing about an unpaid phone bill showed up. Next, I purchased the three credit reports again, an this Afni company never reported this to them. Now I'm thinking it's a scam. I remember working that summer when I went home on a college break to pay that bill off before school started up again, so I'm thinking the just got hold of am old bill and claimed it unpaid. Naturally, I can't prove this since it's way past that statute of limitations. Finally, I decided to Google it, and bam, look at the hits. With so many similar stories, I contacted a few friends who must know the financial laws for their jobs, and they all told me, don't do anything. Just let it ride unless it gets reported to a credit report. Again, I received their bill back in September, and have received nothing since, and no mark on my credit, so I'll do as they say, and leave it alone as long as it leaves me alone. If it does come up again, with it being almost ten years old, I will use the Statute of Limitations in my favor. This company better live their afterlife in a very hot place along with tow truck companies who tow from tow away zones. But that's another story!

The best thing to do is call the Attorney General Office in your state, tell them the situation and let them know that Afni, Inc. is harassing you, and you'd like them to please stop harassing you. The Attorney General Office in my state contacted Afni, Inc and a week later I received a letter from the Attorney General Office stating that my complaint has been settled. They also attached a fax letter from Afni, Inc. stating that they have closed the underlying account and will cease collections on the same. I do advice you to contact the Attorney General Office in your state, and ask them if they could please contact Afni, Inc. regarding this matter.

I hope this will work for you as it did for me...

POSITIVE EXPERIENCE!
$74 owed on 2002 Verizon Land Line

I was alerted to a change in my credit report and I saw a derogatory account listed by AFNI. I called them and they verified the account with me and said they only received it from Verizon in March. I had them give me the number and address for the Verizon line they were billing me for. It was my old line. Verizon never tried to contact me about payment for this account. The fact that AFNI only recently received it isn't their fault. Blame Verizon for holding onto it for that long (Verizon determines when to send it to collections, not AFNI, and YES, companies do hold onto accounts for 6 years or more, just depends on when they audit their records).

The operator(s) I talked to (I called twice) were VERY professional, identified themselves and stated that they worked for "AFNI, A Collection Agency" they didn't try to hide any information from me. They gave me all the info I needed and after my second call (the first one was just to get info, then I called Verizon who couldn't help me at all!) they agreed to REMOVE the entry from my credit report. They said they did receive "returned mail" from the collection notices they sent.

I give AFNI five stars for information, politeness and helpfullness.

If the account they report isn't your's, by all means, fight it, but if the account IS yours or if it's your old girlfriends, if it's in your name, it's your f**king problem, not theirs.

Last week I recieved a collection settlement offer from this company - it was for a 157. balance on a phone in New York from 1997 (more the 10 years old!) from Bell Atlantic - I never lived in New York ever...and never had a phone there.
When I called the woman who answered the phone after a 33 minute wait was EXTREMELY rude - for no reason - she started with an attitude and offered me a settlement of 75. - then 50. and just ingnored my complaint that this is not my bill (even after saying she can see I never lived in NY) - finally she said ok we will settle for 35. - all they want to do is make you pay something you do no owe.
I did send them a letter - and filed a report with the Illinios atty general's office and well as the FCC.

Please do what you can so this company does not contiune to do these things to people.

I just received a notice from AFNI charginging me for an MCI bill in the amount of $81.17.
I called immediately as I have no business with MCI. A woman by the name "NICOLE" insisted that the account was valid and that I was, in fact, liable and that non-payment on my behalf would cause a credit report blemish. this is the first I've heard of this bill and was never contacted by MCI.

When I asked what and when this bill was, she told me it was for long distance calls made in 2005. This is ludicrous as didn't then, or at present have a phone registered to my name- not even a cell phone!

When asked what address it was billed to and she quoted an address at which I lived for 5 months over excess of 20 years ago! The bill is obviously bogus. I contacted MCI and they seem not to have a notion of what I was asking about.

What concerns me most is that they seem to have my personal data (SSN, birthdate, etc).

Than you for having this information online. I will certainly follow the advice posted. Something MUST be done!

I started receiving calls from this company a couple of months ago. They were looking for a robert montoya. No on by that name lives here and I told them so. They did stop calling but today I received a bill. My address but wrong name. The letter states the bill is from Verizon of CA.

I called afni and told them that I have no clue who this person is and I want to know why they have MY address. He tells me they got it from Verizon. He said he would take my address off the account but I know they probably won't.

It seems to me that Verizon is just as guilty in my case. How else did this company get my info. I live across the U.S. from CA. I have an account with Verizon wireless in very good standing so one would think that Verizon should be more careful when flinging customers info around. The A-Hole I talked to at Verizon told me there is nothing they can do.

There is something I can do, I can find another company to send my $200.00 a month to.

I ordered a keyless remote for my car from Orignal Keyless.com w/o checking out the NUMEROUS complaints that have already been lodged against them which was a HUGE mistake! They sent me a remote that was not compatible for my car after waiting 2 long weeks for it then refused to answer my emails afterwards. There only phone line is a voice mail so you can only leave messages. The website says if the product does not work you can request a mercahndise return authorization code from them for a full refund. Of course they will not provide the code.

AFNI reported me to Experian in 2008 for a $333 MCI bill they claim I owe since 2005. I never had MCI as a long distance carrier and they are saying unless I pay them $333 they will keep my name in the credit bureau. They apparently make a living out of trying to blackmail people!

My wife received collection letters from Afni, Inc. stating she owed for an AT&T (Formerly Bell South) account. They wanted $66.52 to settle the debt. I paid online, then got another letter saying we still owed. That's when I found this site. I am sending afni a letter asking for my money back and I have reported them to the FTC. I have been in close contact with my wife's credit reports and this account does not show on any of them.

I recived a collection notice from Afni. in Feb 08 for a GTE Southwest( that was bought out by verison btw..) disconnect notice for the amount of $126.82 that I know damn well I paid seven years ago! I called Afni. at that time and told the rep that I had paid that bill and of course she got rude I hung up and set the issue aside. Today I recived another letter asking for a third of the amount! GOOD LUCK WITH THAT AFNI!

As an AFNI employee, I suggest you all do a little more reading before making compliants. Verizon sold their old debts to our company, so anything we have is from Verizon, (or MCI or Sprint, ect). We are simply doing our jobs by trying to collect on accounts that have been given to us. Also, if you did a little more research you would find that recently there have been multiple "compaines" posing as AFNI to recieve money. I just think it is very rude for you all to acuse AFNI employees of scamming, or what have you. It is our job..thats all. In closing, if you have problems with any company, it would be the previous phone service provider..not AFNI.

Lay off, would ya?

Check this out: I am currently a 4.0 PhD student, totally commited to my field and outreach. I live off of my loans and tiny teaching stipend. This past Spring those criminals reported me for a 7 year old verizon bill that I disputed about 5 years ago- my graduate school loans have been denied and unless I cough up about $400 (and don't even ask me where the rest of that comes from- fraudulent interest on a fraudlent $162.00 bill? how is this even legal?) I will have to drop out of my doctoral program (I was one of three students accepted from an international pool last year), which means I get kicked out of my residancy which is graduate school housing, and go be a pennyless artist/academic (which I've already done, hence the grad school). If there is a pending lawsuit, I would like to please be involved. Unfortunately I need to pay this total BS bill immediately, or I'm not completing my degree. ###ers.

I am having the same issue but mine says it's from QWEST for a phone number I didn't even own. These guys are a fraud no doubt. How do we prevent this?!

Is this potentially the creditexpert.com site trying to get people to buy new reports to dispute this?

Daniella Vinitski, that is a sad story indeed. Sorry to hear about this and it's really a mess with the internet and stolen SS#s now. Good luck!

Same problem here. Got a bill this week for an account my husband had 8 years ago. He gave them his debit card information, and right afterwords realized this was probably a fraud and canceled his card. I'm glad to know I'm not the only one who thought this was a fraud.

I received a dunning letter from Afni for the grand amount of $8, 897.00 for a verizon phone bill in 1999 that I never had. What is better is that when I called to request validation (yes I did back it up with a cert. letter to them) the man I spoke with informed me that the phone had been in service for 2 straight years with not one single bill paid. This was 50 or so days ago.

Now we get to the "validation" that they sent to me. The only thing they sent to me was the front page of a verizon phone bill with my name, account number, and the total amount owed on the bill. Again, I call Afni and tell them that I never had phone service in my name and ask them where is the rest of the verification that I asked for, IE: proof that the bill is mine, proof that I owe the bill, proof that the SOL hasn't run (which I know it has because the SOL in my state is 5 years from the date of the first unpaid bill. The lady that I spoke to this time informed me that it is not their job to provide me with this information. When I told her what the SOL was in my state she tried to tell me that, that only had to do with credit reporting.

Needless to say, the lady was an idiot, I informed her that without a shadow of a doubt I know what the laws are in the state of VA, and if they pursue this debt or it shows on my credit reports (which btw it NEVER has) then I have no problem suing them in a federal court and having them pay me.

DONT PAY AFNI ANYTHING!
