mistreatment and death of my chihuahua
I recently took my little 8 lb Chihuahua dog to Roanoke's Banfield Hospital, she was mistreated and roughly handled. She had a heart murmur and all they could do was make her more uncomfortable, when I saw what they were doing, holding her up by her back legs on anesthesia, oxygen tube and an IV, shaking her to get fluid from her lungs, I left the room they came out and said her heart stopped and asked me if I wanted to revive her. I said yes, I was told that during heart massage the Dr. may have broken a rib, I believe the anesthesia stopped her heart and the shaking of her body upside down. I told them I wanted to take her home when she came around, they advised me to take her to a hospital. They brought her back for a few minutes then they told me she needed to go back on oxygen. They said it looked grim and I should do the right thing. No attempt was utilized to treat her with care, or discuss putting her on heart medication. I was in the room 3 different times and I am traumatized by what they allowed me to see.

prescription not written correctly
My son took his very sick puppy to Banfield Pet Clinic in Kildeer, Il because of vomiting and the dog was not eating. They ran blood tests, etc and he was diagnosed with Parvo. The care at the clinic wasn't necessarily the problem, although the Vet accused my son of "nickel and diming" the Clinic. The veterinarian (Thomas Johnson) wrote an Rx for Bactrim, 480 mg. I took the Rx to 2 pharmacies, and they could not fill it because it was written incorrectly. Of course the Clinic was closed at this time, and there was NO number that I could reach the Vet. And wouldn't you know it, the following day that particular clinic was closed. I called another Banfield Pet Clinic (in Sdhaumburg, IL). At first I was told that there was nothing they could do, since they did not write the prescription, and they were unwilling to help me unless I brought the dog to THEIR clinic. After much insistence, the Vet there, got in touch with Dr. Johnson, and was willing to write another Rx. Then we had to drive to pick up the Rx. It wasn't until I threatened a lawsuit against Banfield Pet Clinic, that I finally got some action. The lady at the Schaumburg clinic said they had nothing to do with the Kildeer Clinic. I reminded her that the " Banfield Clinic " is a corporation as a whole, and that should the puppy die from not getting the medication he needed, someone would be held responsible. They were able to pull up the records at the Schaumburg location, so I couldn't accept that they could not do anything. In summary, I can't believe that no one was willing to over step the line to help me. They would rather see an innocent puppy die, rather than try to communicate with another Vet within their "corporation and network of Vets". I will NEVER bring any animal of mine or my son's to Banfield. They are unprofessional, and care more about making money than they are about animals. Shame on Petsmart for allowing Banfield to operate from their stores. I will no longer shop at Petsmart as long as they are affiliated with Banfield Pet Clinic.

Not all animal hospitals carry large amount of medications in their pharmacies. Regular human doctors offices don't even carry drugs and have you fill your own prescriptions at pharmacies. There aren't vet pharmacies like that that exist. It's against Illinois regulation for a veterinarian or regular human doctor to write a prescription for a patient he has never seen before . The doctor could loose their license if they did. People should not be bringing animals home if there aren't able to prepare themselves for a long term commitment that requires hundreds of preventative care a year let alone any costs medical emergencies.
killed my dog!
I took my 2 dogs for the very first time using the insurance plan and all the paperwork I had for both of them. One of them had a dental procedure and both just general check and vaccines. My younger dog had some of the vaccines couple months ago and they gave them to my dog again! I swear if something happens to my dog they wont have anywhere to go! I will...

On April 30th, 2013, my family rescued a cat from our local Humane Society. As part of the adoption process, I received a coupon book from Petsmart which included a coupon for a free office visit to the Banfield Pet Hospital, which is located within Petsmart in Alcoa, TN. I scheduled an appointment for May 6th and brought in our new cat to take advantage of the free visit. While there, numerous issues were pointed out as being wrong with her including a dire need for a dental cleaning ($180) and a few tests were performed and medications were prescribed. In the middle of this appointment, her records came in from the Humane Society’s vet, and I then learned that she had FIV (feline AIDS). The lack of informing us of this fact prior to adoption is a whole separate issue that I have addressed with the Humane Society, but I mention it here so that everyone has all of the facts. We had just found out (mid visit) that our new cat, that we were already attached to, had FIV. We knew little to nothing about it and it was a very stressful discovery. With this new revelation and all of the expenses that the vet had mentioned she needed, I made the decision to sign up for their “Wellness plan”…thinking I needed it and it would save us money. This plan would cost a one-time membership fee of $37.95 and then $24.95/month for 12 months. It would cover various items including office visits, a dental cleaning, vaccines, and a 15% discount on medications and some services, etc.
After leaving that evening, I went home and did some research and had various conversations with Humane Society volunteers and other veterinarians and decided that I did not feel comfortable with the plan or Banfield and decided to cancel it. According to their contract, I had four days to do so. When I called the next day to cancel the plan, I was informed that I owed an additional $69.60 beyond the $138.23 I had already paid. I knew that I would have to pay the full price for the medications that I had received a 15% discount on since I was no longer on their plan, and had no problem with that. But here is where the deceitfulness became apparent. They refunded me the membership fee and the first month payment, but because their “plan” included a free office visit ($37.95) and a Comprehensive Feline Exam ($45), I had to then pay for them. There are two huge problems with this.
First of all, I had the coupon for the office visit, which was the only reason I made an appointment with them in the first place. ( I have a local vet I have used for 12 years…I was just looking to save a little money with all of the other expenses we were incurring with having a cat for the first time adding up quickly) According to their office manager, that coupon is now null and void due to the fact that I signed up for the plan. Poof…it has vanished!? She informed me that she could hit her computer screen with a bat and there was nothing she could do about it.
The next day is when I learned about the $45 “comprehensive feline exam” they were charging me was in ADDITION to the office visit ($37.95). Once again, I have somehow committed to this charge when I signed the contract that I am now cancelling. For one, I was not informed that they were doing a “comprehensive exam” which included a 5 second glance at her teeth, ears, eyes, and rectum. I would have never agreed to this and was not informed it was happening or of its charge if I decided to not do the plan.
Second, I have had pets for 17 years and I have NEVER taken any animal to any vet for a well check appointment and been charged $82.95 to just look the animal over, nor do I know anyone else who has had a fee even close to this amount! This didn’t include any tests, meds, nothing at all…. but looking at her as I mentioned above.
When I contacted Banfield Corporate office, they just refer everything back to the actual hospital location and back to the same unhelpful office manager. When I contacted their advocate team, the office manager received the email and informed me that it all defaults back to her (which she seemed to enjoy this fact). In another words, there is NOTHING I can do for these ridiculous charges and the only one you can work with is the in- hospital unhelpful office manager.
I then let the office manager know that I would not just accept their inappropriate and unacceptable charges. I said that I may seek legal counsel if this couldn’t be resolved and would also contact the BBB to help make other pet owners aware of Banfield’s business practices. (She also then informed me that the BBB would still defer back to her and it would be of no consequence). They then refused to speak to me and the corporate office even hung up on me when I asked when my balance was due by and told me to contact their legal department ( because I had mentioned the option of seeking legal counsel they will no longer speak with me )which you can only do in writing!
We currently have a fungal culture in process ($33) whose results will not be back for 2 weeks, which they refuse to send me the results of due to the fact that I said I may seek legal counsel. They can’t put the results in the mail on a piece of paper for the test I have already PAID for. Again, this is completely unacceptable.
I paid the balance due today, before the 4 day cancellation period expired as to not be turned over to any credit agencies and to be officially out of the “plan”. But what has happened here has SCAM written all over it in my opinion. I can’t believe what I consider as a reputable company such as Petsmart would be associated with such a business with such terrible practices. All over the internet you find hundreds of complaints against Banfield and the improper handling of both pets and money that they have. (Of course, unfortunately, I didn’t find this information out until afterwards) I would highly suggest that Petsmart disassociate ASAP with Banfield before it brings down their business by association. I will say the Petsmart manager was extremely helpful in trying to aid me in the situation the best she could and did give me a $37.95 gift card to Petsmart to try to compensate, although she continually reminded me that they are two separate entities and she could not do anything about their actions. She also facilitated the cancellation of the contract when I went in to the store when I requested her help since they were no longer speaking with me…I thought I might need assistance to pay the balance and cancel.
I feel obligated to bring this to the community’s attention so people can make informed decisions. I know there are a lot of others like me who are a sucker for a “good coupon”. This is definitely not the one to try to take advantage of! This was certainly not a savings and going to my current vet would have been better by far. And come to find out, my vet performs first office visits for adopted cats free of charge also! (When I originally called to make the appointment before I knew about the Banfield coupon, the girl who answered the phone had made a mistake and told me it was a full $39 charge!)
Thank you for taking the time to read of my ordeal. I hope that having this information helps prevent this from happening to other unsuspecting families.

Banfield Pet Hospital is a major rip off. The same thing happened to me when we brought our two beagles in b/c they both have ear infections. The dr. went on about all the things they needed done that had nothing to do with their ear infections. She had a bill for us to sign for $872.14. What the hell is wrong with people? We live in Henderson NV & have a great vet out there not a Corporate/Petsmart store. They charged us for an office visit & we never got the rx's the boys needed for their ear infection. NEVER EVER TAKE YOUR ANIMAL THERE.
neglect
My dog stopped eating and drinking and lost alot of weight so I took him to banfield on a Friday! He ended up having diabetes, Cushing disease and an large liver! Dr Stacy was optimistic about his recovery! We got him on insulin and pills but he was not eating or drinking and they had him the whole day that Saturday! They said he drank alot of water himself but when I took him home he did not drink anything! He passed away that Sunday night! Dr Stacy never called either to say I'm sorry! Will never bring another pet there ever again!
negligent death
Lola Terrell our sweet Maltese killed by Dr. Charles Overstreet and Banfield Pet Hospital in Grand Prairie, TX
Saturday morning my wife dropped off Lola at Banfield to have her teeth cleaned and some teeth extracted at 8 am. We went on with our day. I took Pugz Lee our foster Puggle to an adoption event at 11. I was pulling in the driveway to pick up Lauren, Jax and Sah Dee to go to agility training when Lauren called to tell me that the clinic called for us to go up there asap. I thought maybe they couldn’t safely subdue her to put her under or they found a tumor in her mouth. Lauren was frantic and called them back. They said I thought you both were coming. She said not if you won’t tell us what is wrong, we have a 2 year old. So I ran inside and said “what’s wrong with my dog?” I was told to wait my turn and then taken into a room. Dr. Overstreet whom I had never met before and was NOT supposed to be doing the procedure and the office manager walked into the room.
He said “what makes you think this dog is only 4 or 5 years old?” I said that was the estimate the shelter gave but 3 other vets have said based on her overall condition that the estimate was accurate. Then he said “well her spay incision is very old”. Really? Did you not look at her paperwork? Because she was spayed one month ago today and she still had stitches when we adopted her. “well I don’t know about all that but she had a reaction to the anesthesia?” So I said to stop talking in circles, is my dog dead? “yes. We will be happy to an autopsy and cremate her”. I said what is the point of an autopsy when we all know that you killed my dog? Why did she do fine a month ago when she spayed but now she is dead? No response. I left before things got ugly. I told a client up front not to use them because they kill animals. The girl working the front rolled her eyes at me.
When I got home my wife called the vet. He started off with how he has 40 years of experience and this was a really old dog and the incision was very old from her spay. My wife asked him why he didn’t use the same anesthesia as her spay? He then admitted to never looking at her paper work. Then he said he did not like to use Ketamine which the spay clinic used. She said he kept avoiding her questions and going back to his 40 years of experience. She finally told him to stop and answer her questions. He also noted that her platelet count was high but he thought was okay to do the procedure anyway (even though according to him AFTER she died, Lola was very old). Then after stating numerous times that her spay was very old, he asked if she was spayed at a low cost clinic. My wife asked what that mattered? He said it was probably something they did. Keep in mind she had been seen by 2 vets since then that said and I have documents that aside from her teeth, she was very healthy. He also said she did not come from a puppy mill and was never used for breeding (even though her female parts looked very tattered). He also told my wife that he was having another vet come in to perform a necropsy even though I did not authorize it.
A little later in the day I received a call from Dr. Guerra who identified herself as the chief vet at the clinic. She heard what happened and wanted to here my side. She was in San Antonio at the time. One of the questions I asked was why Dr. Overstreet was performing the procedure when I was told the week prior that the younger Hispanic vet that I actually met was going to do it. Well she was bitten by a dog on Thursday which broke her hand. But I SHOULD have been told this in case I wanted to reschedule. SHOULD HAVE would have meant the difference of my dog still being alive.
So now she, excuse me, her remains as the clinic stated today are being sent off to a 3rd party pathologist to a necropsy. I am sure there is a 99% chance there will of course be something wrong with Lola and not that she was overdosed or beaten to death at which point I will have my vet do another necropsy. We knew Lola needed her teeth worked on and in case she had an infection we did not want to wait till we could save the money for our normal vet to do. Instead we signed up for the Wellness Preventative Banfield plan which he have not been reimbursed.
It just happens that amongst my 2800 Facebook Friends that one of them used to work at this clinic and knows both vets. Her quotes on Dr. Overstreet were:
“Dr Guerra does all she can to assure things run smoothly..atleast that's how it was when i was working there. But ### always seems to hit the fan when Overstreet is there..or anywhere for that matter. It doesn't surprise me that they didn't tell you unfortunately”
“He's a horrible vet. I wouldn't even let him look at my pets for anything other than shots when I worked there”
“The Dr that was there today is one that I used to work with when I started in GP several years ago. Honestly he should've retired a very long time ago..
I remember being so thankful when Dr Guerra took over at that location. I'm sorry again for your loss. These are one of those moments when I'm so glad I don't work there anymore.”
So my wife has filed a complaint with the Banfield Board of whatever. I expect nothing but more lies. I will be filing a report with the Texas State Board of Veterinary Medical Examiners. I am also going to talk to some attorneys. Honestly I do not care if we get a dime back. I would rather see it all go to some rescues or even an attorney. Nothing can bring Lola back but I can prevent this from happening to over animals. When I went to VCA today to get the record of her exam there, they had her spay paperwork on file. They made copies when I took her up there just to get her on HW prevent. So why was this vet not given or bothered to read the paperwork that I provided Banfield before knocking her out?

I am very sorry for the loss of your dog. Anesthetic deaths can occur under even the best doctor's care, no procedure is without risk. I have worked in some top-notch emergency and specialty practices, and with some of the best vets in the country, and every one of them has experienced patient death at some point that was beyond their control. I cannot comment on the competence of the doctor in question, and I have known capable and caring Banfield doctors, but myself and other veterinary professionals that I know generally do no recommend them for anything other than very basic care such as vaccinations, wellness visits and deworming. Any sick visits or procedures we refer people to more traditional and progressive clinics. Banfield's serve a very important niche of low-cost basic care, and offer more, but their M.O. is low pay and they typically do not attract highly skilled staff. One of the biggest drawbacks is typically minimally- to marginally-trained support staff, and these are the people often monitoring a patient under anesthesia. Again, even the most skilled vet techs that I know, both registered and not, have had patients arrest under their care. Even the most skilled and observant anesthetician is limited by available monitoring equipment, which many times at clinics such as these consist of only SPO2 or ECG, but not continuous blood pressure and ETCO2 monitoring, which can be much more accurate indicators of impending arrest or other complications. Not knocking Banfield, but in medicine as in many other things, you get what you pay for. I have no problem getting my young, healthy animals spayed and neutered at low-cost clinics, but I always pony up the cash for state-of-the-art clinics with well-educated, highly trained support staff to perform any other procedures or diagnostics. You know, the ones that aren't located inside of a pet store. Would you go to a surgeon located in a Walmart? Probably not. But it is just fine for having your eyes checked.
In short, you had a horrible experience. No one is contesting that. Could the staff have handled telling you better? Probably. Is it difficult to juggle a client who will be distraught along with your other clients in a tiny space? Absolutely. Did the vet ramble on about things that you felt didn't have any bearing on the situation and was this not helpful? Sure. But does that mean that he killed your dog? No. He was probably searching his brain and his medical knowledge for a reason why your pet passed, too. He was probably just as upset as you were, but coming from the other side. He may not have handled it very well, but he is human. Veterinarians are not in it for the money, the glamor or the prestige. They have the same student loan debt as MDs, but make a teacher's salary. They get bitten, pooped on, urinated on, vomited on, clawed, generally beaten up and also furred by their patients, and very frequently yelled and and accused of horrible things by the very people that they are trying to help. All of this is because they LOVE animals and want to help them. Many of them are not great with humans as well. The job can be thankless. You take it home with you. You never forget an animal that you lost. Or the people who scream at you and tell you that you killed their dog. Never. But you keep doing it anyway, even though you will never get rich, never be on the cover of a magazine, and will always have people who are mad at you. Why? Because someone has to. Even in your darkest hour, try taking a moment to have compassion for others in the situation, even if you are certain that they have wronged you. In all likelyhood, they are having just as hard a time as you are. Be kind to others. Heaping scorn upon this man will not bring your dog back. Ask questions, get answers. You may not get the answers you seek. Sometimes we never find out a reason why an animal was lost. Sometimes you just need to grieve and heal and move on, gracefully.
obscene price gouging
Banfield Pet Hospital is the biggest rip off corporation! They prey on animals and their owners! Banfield literally rapes the wallets of people, who are concerned for their pets. They charged me eight times over what a pharmacy would for water pills for my pet. Banfield charged $49.00 and Target would have charged $14.95 FOR THE VERY SAME MEDICATION! And even this web site charged less than Banfield...http://www.drsfostersmith.com/product/prod_display.cfm?pcatid=9619 BANFIELD COULD USE GENERICS TO HELP SENIORS AND THE POOR...BUT THEY RIP OFF THE PUBLIC AND COST ANIMALS THEIR LIVES, DUE TO THE OBSCENE HIGH COST OF MEDICINE AND UNNECESSARY LAB WORK AND CARE! READ THE COMPLAINTS ON THIS SITE AGAINST THIS SHYSTER CORPORATION.
There needs to be a class action lawsuit for MALPRACTICE against this evil corporation. Contact me and we'll get the ball rolling. Read these complaints...OBSCENE, THAT THESE SHYSTERS HAVEN'T BEEN SUED!
Please someone give me any info in what to do i want to take action and get my money back..my dog was diagnose with allergies and it turned out to be thyroid for 1 and ahalf yr..i canceled my memebership immediately called the company and when i mention lawyer she got quiet...we need to get our money back..i left a message for the manager n still waiting for a call back
Also, what one vet, or doctor even, charges for services has no bearing on what another charges. If I visited a doctor or a vet that had the nerve to bad mouth another over price, I would leave. I would never give my money to someone who bad mouthed another's prices. One business has no idea what another business' costs are.
Melissa, if Banfield had neutered your dog and the stress of the anesthesia caused him to have a heart attack, you would be here accusing them of killing your dog and malpractice.
i feel Banfield pet hospital is a rip off and they have inexperienced vets their, not confident at all, wouldn't neuter my pet due to a heart murmur that increased in number when my cat had a viral infection, brought Milo to a REAL vet he agreed Milo needed and ultrasound of heart but did not refuse to do the neutering, he said the vet at Banfield wanted to use waayyy to much anethesia where Dr Weed said he would gas him and would be in and out, he said that he has done this before and the survival rate was 99 percent, that showed me he was sooooo confiedent, i agreed to sign against medical advice form and the inexperienced vet still wouldn't do it. I will say Milo is neutered and very healthy thanks to Dr Weed, he is expensive but is knowledgable cofident and answers all questions fully where Dr Holmes was like a child out of her playground
Walmart charges $4 for some antibiotics, Publix gives them for free. Walmart charges $25 for Humulin insulin, CVS charges $75. Get the picture? There is no law that says any two stores must charge the same or close for the same product. Price gouging, like bait and switch, is used often with no understanding what it is. If there was a natural disaster, and the store charged $10 for a bottle of water they normally charge a dollar for, THAT is gouging. Charging the same price for products they always charge is not.
Maybe the Federal Trade Commission should get off its butt and look into this area. Or, write your congressman. They jump at any and all chances to "regulate" business. Veterinary "medicine" is a business. I think it qualifies.
Vets know whats in your wallet and appreciate greatly, the highly intensified dedication that such people as seniors, as well as nulliparous women, the usual dog or cat fancier, and those who have spent a grand or more for a pet have for that pet.. So what have they gotten into?
Playing doctor... with no insurance company, no government agencies to look at what they charge, and for goodness sakes, no ObamaCare to get in the way! And man are they having a field day. Just think up a price and write it on the bill. God forbid, why did they stop at 8X the price when they could have just as easily charged ya 10X the price. Why stop at 8X? The average doofus wouldn't question it. Just have less to eat at the Bob Evans later that day.
It's a perfect storm for vets...super expensive prices for purebred dogs, a population that emotes at any chance, and credit for days for everybody! Let's face it. Nobody who has bonded to their 1000 dollar pet is gonna stop short of MD Anderson treatment, It ain't gonna happen and they know it.
In the old days, fido got old and eventually got sick. He found a corner to live out his final days in as inconspicuous a manner as possible. A courtesy that your friend reserved to ease your pain of his passing. He knew you'd miss him...but living as a handicap is not in their genes.
So its all about vets who now have developed a business model that is an MBA's dream.
I hope your pet isn't seriously ill. And I am encouraged that a store carries an OTC? remedy that can help him/her.
my cat suffered because of them
I don't even know where to begin, I adopted a cat from Grapevine Animal shelter in Oct, Took her in to get checked out at Banfield was diag'd with Kitty herpes.. When I sent Snickers, my six year old Yorkie to Banfiled Pet Hospital in Ann Arbor, they found that he had bladder stone and needed surgery. Dr. Kate Martin unblocked my dog and put in a catheter. But I had to take him to Animal Emergency Center, a 24 hours pet hospital for overnight stay, because Banfield doesn’t really have a hospital for after hour care. Dr. Martin told me to send my dog to Banfield next day for the surgery.
Almost midnight, I received a phone call from Animal Emergency Center, they told me something was wrong because they saw too much blood in the catheter, and recommended to have the surgery done right away and said they could have a look to figure out what was wrong. They did the surgery, but couldn’t figure out what is wrong. Animal Emergency Center suspected a urethral rupture and did a test, the test detects nothing. But after that Snicker’s situation kept deteriorating, two days later, the veterinarians at Michigan States detected three ruptures! After a major surgery at MSU, the situation looked better in the beginning but didn’t last. I had to put Snickers to sleep.
The attending veterinarian at MSU wrote "The events leading up to his urethral and penis necrosis are unclear. This is a highly unusual complication and likely resulted from a number of factors. I'd speculate that there was some urethral trauma at the time of the original unblocking, which was complicated by infection and subsequent thrombosis".
I went to Banfield Ann Arbor asked the detail medical notes, but there was no detail on how the unblocking was performed. I requested Dr. Martin to provide in writing on the procedure done. She told me that Dr. Karen Johnson, Benfield’s VP of Client Advocate recommended her not doing it. When Dr. Johnson herself called me, I asked her why she made that recommendation, while not denying my right to the medical record, she said telling me orally was enough and she made the decision not in writing “because you can post it in Internet!” She told me that in her 23 years as a veterinarian, she had seen so many tragedies from cancer and accidences. And Dr. Martin has done an “excellent job!” helping Snickers. Snickers did not have a cancer, nor did he run over by a car! This was insult after injury.
At the end I told her that what she was trying to do was unethical and hang up. Somehow she left a message on my phone next day and said that she told Dr. Martin that Dr. Martin could write down the procedures. And here is what Dr. Martin wrote:
“Pet was placed in R lateral recumbency. Wearing sterile gloves, and using Sterile technique the distal 2-3 inches of an 8 fr red rubber catheter was coated with sterile lubricant. An assistant exteriorized the penis, and the catheter was advanced approximately 5-6 inches prior to meeting resistance. At that time, the catheter was backed out approximately 2-3 inches, and flushed with saline in a pulsating manner. After flushing the catheter was again advanced. Resistance was met a second time and the pulsating flush repeated prior to enter the bladder without further resistance. Immediately upon entry of the catheter, very bloody urine (180-200mls) flowed passively out of the catheter. After urine stopped the flowing the catheter was again flushed with sterile saline, which was draw back out of the bladder.”
Another veterinarian advised that though flushing first is the best, but “the timing of flushing is not the concern rather the method of unblocking they used (not occluding the pelvic urethra). Resistance during catheterization is usually an indication of either a stone or a large amount of sandy gritty material.” Later in Animal Emergency Center, the veterinarian found “Pure blood coming from urinary catheter.” And when she removed the unary catheter, the note said “Very gritty and bloody”.
Later I contacted Banfield, they denied any liability and said, “our team of veterinarians who evaluated the medical record are all in agreement that Dr. Martin provided excellent medical care for Snickers”.
Snickers ashes are in an urn in my house. Many months have passed, and I have a new dog now; but the pain is still sharp and the feeling of injustice is still strong. Yes, injustice!
Snickers, rest in peace.
BANFIELD PET HOSPITAL OF HORROR! This obscene corporation has to be shut down! Look at the death and maiming on these complaints! Not to mention...raping of wallets!
misdiagnosis and useless meds
Two vets/vet techs examined my dog. She had a strange sore on her back. They fumbled around for about 30 minutes and came up with ringworm. They sold me antibiotics, antifungal medicine, and a shampoo. They also took a lab sample. Totaling almost $200, I left broke but relieved to begin her recovery. A week later, the sore worsened, and burst open. I took her to my usual vet, who found a deep tissue infection. She was put on a stronger antibiotic. There was no ringworm evidence. Another $200. She recovered nicely. I called Banfield and asked for a refund. I was told they would review and get back to me. I haven't heard from them since. This has been aprox. 1 1/2 months ago. I still plan to pursue this.
They wouldn't refund. Offered only to refund unopened shampoo IF I signed off that the issue was resolved to my satisfaction. HELL NO. Not only did Banfield lose a customer, but I also stopped buying ALL my pet products from PetSmart. Guilt by association.
The complaint has been investigated and resolved to the customer’s satisfaction.
Banfield Pet Hospital of Horrors! This OBSCENE corporation is responsible for killing and maiming animals...read the complaints. Plus they rape wallets!
Poor diagnosis. I would also ask for my money back and let them know you will take it higher in the company to get satisfaction.
@tasha12- that was a nasty, uncalled for comment.
taking advantage of pet owners!
I refuse to use any Banfield Pet Hospital ever again! I had been using them since 2009 simply because it was convenient after I relocated to another state. At check in staff are using personal cells and texting making customers wait. Then techs try and sell you invasive procedures even if you already pay for wellness plan then act rude to you if you don't consent to get the procedure, then receptionist checked me out but didn't charge for medicine so I assumed they billed it to my payment account that I pay for the wellness plan but after leaving another receptionist called screaming on my personal phone telling me I'm a thief and sending me to collections and hanging up on me. I went back and paid bill but woman who called was too chicken s%^& to come out and take my money so I had to call a manager to process the bill. Vets stay for very brief time frames so not sure about credibility of staff.

I worked for Banfield and it was the worse job I have ever had under the tutalege of Dr. Graham Heuchert.. who basically could not get a job as a real vet... worse company .. so glad I am not there anyore... Bellevue Washington
vet recommended unnecessary tests
On 10/08/2012, I took my 16 year old Yorkie mix to Banfield - Orlando to be put to sleep. After listening to her heart, Dr. Tess Turner recommended that I have her chest x-ray'd. I tried to explain the other ailments my beloved dog had, but Dr. Tanner told me that if my dog was in congestive heart failure, she could be treated. After listening to Dr. Tanner try to make me feel guilty for a few minutes, I left with my dog. I feel that Dr. Tanner behaved unethically by trying to increase the cost of my visit. I will never step foot in a Banfield or Petsmart ever again and I recommend that you do the same.
The complaint has been investigated and resolved to the customer’s satisfaction.
THIS HAS NOT BEEN RESOLVED! The closest it came to being resolved is that the Chief of Staff at Banfied admitted that Dr. Tanner's behaved unethically on the phone the night of this incident.
I was the person who posted it in the first place.
Veterinary "medicine" has become the" honey pot" of those who either eschewed the medical profession because of imminent socialism or couldn't get into medical school. Either way, like dentists and lawyers, its the battle to the top of the feeding chain.
When I go to the vet I only allow immunizations and anything beyond that I figure its lights out for my beloved Boston Terrier. I dread that day, but heck, he's a dog, he's my buddy, and he will only live for 12 years or so, so I know I will likely outlive him and thats it..
People need to realize that a dog is nothing much more than a fish in a fish aquarium who comes up to the surface when he sees your hand. Most dogs and cats may live a lttle longer then a well adjusted gold fish...its the "little longer" thats important to those vets.
So, I say, why line the pockets of a horse doctor who now has the average dog owner by the nuts because 80 percent of their training is learning to use "owner guilt" to pump up even the most simple visit for some shots, or make a big medical miracle out of the impending death of a large breed at 11 years old or a small breed at 15. Sit down, think it over, and act accordingly. But remember, its your wallet; not mine, nor the vet's.
rip-off
I have Banfield insurance and get a "free" dental cleaning once a year. It is not free, never has been free. Every cleaning the vet said more teeth needed to be pulled. This time it is $440 for three teeth. I don't have it but felt too guilty to say no. I said yes and then talked to people here at work about it. They said if the dog had not been showing any pain and had been eating all right, there was no reason to pull the teeth. They convinced me to call back and tell the vet not to pull the teeth. Within 20 minutes I called back and those teeth were already pulled. So I'm paying $440 for 20 minutes of work? I feel so taken advantage of. I'm cancelling the insurance and never taking my dog there again. I would not recommend Banfield to anyone! I honestly believe that the whole free dental checkup is a scam so they can find something else wrong and bill you for it. $440 for 20 minutes of work? That doesn't include the surgery or anesthesia -- those are provided as part of my insurance contract.
I have had banfield care for my animals (three cats) for 2 years. I had them all on wellness plans and paid my monthly fees on time. I moved to denver when I got out of the navy and was not happy with the banfields here. I called to cancel my wellness plans and the lady at the hospital said it was no problem and they were cancelled. 4 months later I am getting calls from a collection agency saying I owe banfield nearly 600 dollars! I am supposedly liable for the rest of the plan even when not using the services! I can't even use them for vaccinations even though I am now paying off the plans! horrible customer service at the call centre! no attempt to help a long time customer at all! the vets here treat animals like a car to be worked on and then shoved out the door! do not use banfield! use a vet who actually cares!
This banfield pet hospital of horrors needs to be shut down! everyone should get together for a class action law suit for malpractice!
Why don't u read the agreement before u sign it!
Once u renew u r responsable to pay the whole amount for the whole year wether u go and use the services u paid for or not, we always send reminders and call to let u know u r due for services.
stay away from banfield
Please do yourself a favor and stay away from this place.
I took my puppy here for dehydrating because of a stomach virus. My dog has been throwing up for 3 days with a diarrhea.
I went to the clinic at 10 am that morning putting my dog in hands that I trusted.
The clinic called me back at 3 pm telling me they ran a blood work him and said he has a virus. When I told them he was severely dehydreded they have told me he wasn't dehydrated one bit. (anyone in their right mind would know that a dog that has been throwing up for 3 days and has had a diarrhea would be dehydrated.
Yet that haven't given him any fluids..
When I asked Jennifer to give him fluid to hydrate him, she told me it was not necessary. I begged him to give him the fluids that he needed and she informed me that the clinic was going to close in two hours and that wouldn't provide him with them. When I asked how he was doing she told me he was not doing any better and that he was ready to be picked up due to their closing time and told me to take him somewhere else if I wanted anymore health attention for him.
Once again I begged her for his fluid due to his dehydration.
She called me back 30 min later telling me she has given him a shot of electrolytes which quickly she has informed me about the price of it.
I asked her what the total price would be of my bill since I was on my way to pick him up. She told me it was 347$
When I got the clinic I was informed that my bill was 499. Even tho the shot they have just giving him was 40$. I wrote a check and waited an hour for my dog. After a hour went by they told me they would not give me the medicine because my dog bit Jennifer in the process of the shot. When I asked Jennifer to show me the bite she refused to show me the bite and argued that she was bleeding and was going to the hospital instead.
Afterwards the manager of the clinic refused to give me the medicine and warned me that the Animal control with the police was coming by.
My dog has been in this clinic since 10 am without any treatment. If it wasn't for me he would not even get any fluids at all. Not to mention they didn't give him any water which they admitted to.
I told them that my dog needed to go home and get rested but they still wish to threatened me. I gave them my vets number, my address and my phone number Nd told them if anyone wished to contact me about my dog they were more than welcomed to.
When I called the clinic back and checked on Jennifer she was very rude and hung up on me. I don't even have the heart to tell about her rudeness or how I was spoken to me from her. I can't even believe people are working at an animal shelter such as this person.
Conclusion to this story is that I came for help to this clinic. Trusted these people which "help the animal when the health is needed" instead they didn't do anything to help him until I begged them to at least give him the fluids. Now I am at home with a "still sick dog"
I have paid 500$ instead of 347$ plus 40$ and at the end I left with nothing but a heartache.
I really hope people will research their vets before they put they beloved pets into hands as these people.
wellness care plan is a scam
Banfield Pet Hospital is there to sell you a wellness plan - keep your money regardless of whether you cancel due to poor quality of service for your pet which is your family member. I have noticed that there are over 800 complaints here and I wish I had read this site before putting down payment for a 1 year plan. The "plan" here is to collect money and provide substandard service. I was not properly informed by the vet what the recommended period between bordetella vaccine is and boarding however I did tell them when I would be boarding my puppy. My pup became sick several days after boarding at PetSmart but when I returned to Banfied and saw a different vet and went over all of his symptoms in detail, the exam was quick (save time and collect $) and the treatment was not effective so that 2 days later my puppy was quite a bit sicker. Having no faith in Banfield's ability at this point so I took my pup to a local vet who diagnosed both illnesses correctly (at this point his fever was 104) after giving him an extensive exam and then explaining the course of treatment which was not at all what Banfield's treatment was. The puppy was feeling better by that night and is now fine.
However, despite calling corporate 3 different days and getting transferred back and forth, disconnected, and put on hold endlessly I still do not have a refund that is confirmed, realistic or fair. Jenn, the manager at the Commack facility was rude, condesending and made it clear that the pet was not the priority but protecting the MONEY was.

poor service, over charged, plan is a scam
I had just received a coupon for a free exam at Banfield. Within a few days my cat was showing some signs of difficulty urinating. I scheduled an appointment and of course was very concerned about my 14 year old baby. I have had him since he was 4 months old. I filled out all of my paperwork and waited and was finally seen by a vet. This vet tech was very good. And, I felt that the first vet I saw was also good. They said he needed blood work and I could save a lot of money if I bought the plan because the blood work was included in the plan. I was in such a state of fear that I signed up for it. they drew the blood and it returned as being low blood count and their exam showed he may have a blockage in his urinary tract. The gave me antibiotics and an RX for food for urinary tract infection that can only be purchased in Petsmart. They also needed to do an additional test; but used blood from the same draw. This test was for feline leukemia but it cost $40.00 but it was not covered by the plan I just purchased. This test came back negative. I was schedule for a follow up in a week. When I went to that visit a completely different situation. The new tech was not capable of taking care of a mop. She said she needed to do a fecal exam to check for worms and during that exam she hurt my cat so badly he made a sound I have never heard in 14 years. I ordered to stop. I KNOW BELIEVE SHE DAMAGED SOMETHING IN MY CATS RECTUM BECAUSE HE IS NOW SPOTTING BLOOD WHEN HE GOES TO THE BATHROOM; BELIEVE ME WE ARE GOING TO A DIFFERENT VET TOMORROW. She then came in and gave him some oral meds before I got a chance to stop her and/or ask what they were and what about any side effects. She then told me it was a worm medicine. Still not sure what is going on as after that he did not have a bowel movement for 2 days and when he did it was most unusual. When the vet came in she said he had fleas and I told her I just put his flea meds on.in our area, we are a beach front community and fleas are here year round. She asked what kind I had used; I told her I had used Sentry purchased at Petsmart because it is made from natural ingredients. The vet said I should not use that because it was dangerous and I needed to buy flea meds from them and she said I had to purchase Revolution for $14.00 each treatment and since she had already had that on my cat I was forced to pay for that. I was quite upset because ALL flea meds state to use every 30 days; and he had two does in two days. She then said he needed another blood test and that would be $40.00 and again the plan did not cover that. I told her my Social Security did not come until next week and she said to get my finances in order and come back next week. I again ask why this was not covered and she would not answer. I went home and went through both the booklet and the contract and nothing said about what is or is not included in blood work. They both say diagnostic blood work is included. YOU SHOULD NOTE AFTER I FILED MY COMPLAINT ABOUT THIS BANFIELD HAS NOW CHANGED THEIR CONTRACT. The day before my next appointment the receptionist call to remind of my appointment and during that conversation I was again told to make sure I had the money ready for the blood test. Within the next 2 hours they called back and said they needed to reschedule my appointment because the vey had to perform surgery the day of may appointment. I said I would have to call them when I got home; but did question how this change came about so quickly. I was told they had a new appointment system and it did not catch the double booking. When I got home; and before I could call them to set a new date they called me again. This time I was told the vet would postpone this surgery and see me first. Now they are letting someones pet wait for surgery that was supposed to be a minor emergency to see me. I told them not to worry about it. I want everyone who reads this to: file all of your papers and complaints with your local state attorney general, the BBB, and your state's vet board. These people have to be closed down now!
Banfield is by far the worst vet I have ever been to. The wellness plans are a total sham - every visit, I've had to fight to get the vet to perform the most routine tests that are promised in the plan and even then, they find loopholes to charge you... They charge several times the regular rate for meds ect. so you end up paying for that you would have if you'd gone to a reputable vet. All of the doctors at Banfield are inexperienced and incompetent. They are clearly only concerned about getting as much money from you as possible. I worked at a vet for over 5 years and know a little bit about what a good vet should do. I recently took my Great Dane into Banfield in Palm Coast and paid a lot of money for a complete senior wellness exam with a full CBC blood panel screen. The vet barely looked at my dog and did not even notice 5 large lipomas until after I pointed them out to her. She spent LESS THAN 3 minutes examining my dog! She did not ask to review his records nor did she carefully listen to heart and lung function. It was very clear to me the whole exam what just a sham to get money and she did not care at all about my dog's health. She seemed annoyed that I asked questions and did not have informed answers for any of them. They supposedly did a full CBC panel which (miraculously) came back in about 5 min. However, they did not give me the results and when I came back it to pick them up, I noticed there was an abnormally low level platelet count (148) The doctor had not even noticed it until I pointed it out and then made excused saying it was "normal" A reputable vet would have ordered a manual check of this to confirm. A low level platelet count can be very serious. I now have to go to another vet to have this checked. The CBC panel itself was not nearly as inclusive as most panels done at regular vets.. yet they charged me 3x what most vets charge! I told her about my dogs cognitive decline and the doctor said she had never heard of Anipryl which is the most commonly diagnosed prescription med for this... nor did she know about choline or Cholodin; which are the most commonly used supplements for canine cognitive decline! Remarkably uniformed! She did not seem to care at all and did nothing to check him for this... She also said no adults canines can get ear mites which is a lie. She pretended to briefly look into his ears.. (this is not the way to check for mites.. you have to take a swab at look under a microscope) When I worked at the vet, I personally treated at least 30 adults dogs for ear mites. Finally, they charged me twice what they originally quoted for Rimadyl and only gave me 10 days worth with no refills! I had to go back in to get the Rimadyl because the vet forgot to add it during the first visit! When I finally got it... It did not have the full amount and most of the pieces were broken up. Two years ago, when I took my Great Dane into Banfield on the "platinum plan" for a complete yearly exam and screen... they left him in a small cage all day long and when I picked him up after work - 9 hours later, he could barely walk and had feces and urine all over him! They told me they did not do anything for him that day.. no tests.. NOTHING! They had forgotten he was there! The doctor refused t come out and talk to me and they even tried to charge me for that! They also gave him 6 month supply of bad heartworm med that was recalled! They did not want to reimburse me nor did they apologize for their incompetence. If you care at all about your pets, I would avoid this place at all costs! You are going to get much better care going to a real vet.
taking advantage
I brought my cat into Banfield Pet Hospital in the morning to see what they could do for his teeth. They put him under anesthesia to check his mouth. They called in the middle of the day and started telling me all the problems with his teeth and how it must have been and is so painful for him to live with. They mentioned how it could lead to heart problems and possibly death if not taken care of. Then they say its going to be $1215. I was completely stunned. it was like a car just hit me. I felt light headed and sick to my stomach. I didnt know what else to do but say yes. They had my cat under anesthesia! No way would I have brought them into the vet if I had know it was going to be that much. I said yes, because I didnt know what else to say. I was so in shock. to ask a person to make a decision like that while their pet is captive. and then to make me feel guilty if I didnt go along with the precedure. They said it would be 1215 at the most and that the amount generally goes down. What a hard sell! I am so angry right now. The shock is wearing off and im realizing how much they took advantage of me. not only is it $1215 but they signed me up for a "wellness plan" to reduce the cost. they said the cleaning would be 300+ already so signing up for a wellness plan would save me money in the long run. So I signed up for it. That gave them license to do alot more tests called for under the plan. to a whopping amount of 1800+. so Basically if I dont choose the plan and pay them $1215 at that moment and an additional 25 per month they'd charge me 1800+. I cant believe they take advantage of people like that.

staff inexperience
I took my small, happy comparatively healthy senior dog by appointment for his teeth cleaning, a few hours later i was called by the Banfield vet and told that they were unable to clean his teeth due to complications. I came to hospital to retrieve my pet and found a confused, unhappy dog suffering greatly. I was told that they attempted to locate a vein in one of his paws to inject anesthesia, but were unable to find his vein, so they tried again on a different paw and that failed so they went to the third paw, but that also failed. So they blew out three veins and subject the poor animal to extreme pain. They also caused my dog to dehydrate.
When my dog came home he suffered with loose bowels and uncontrollable urinary problems.
Today I was called by Banfield and was asked to pay my current monthly fee, they didnt want to know about the dog that they mistreated, just give me money. Shame on them
