I am writing to formally file a complaint against Capella University regarding the unjust hold placed on my account and grades due to an alleged overpayment from my undergraduate institution. I am a Business Administration Doctoral student and have been enrolled at Capella since January 2021.
In July 2024, I was informed by Capella University's Financial Aid Office that I had received an overpayment of $112 during my undergraduate studies at the University of Memphis, which I completed before 2018. Despite this issue originating from a different institution and time period, I was assured that I could sign a reaffirmation agreement and that my financial aid would cover any outstanding charges for the Spring 2024 term.
However, Capella University has recently informed me that I now owe over $4k and that failure to pay this amount will result in my account being sent to collections. This notification comes almost three years after I first enrolled at Capella, which raises significant concerns about the timing and accuracy of this claim.
As a dedicated student who has consistently met all academic and financial obligations, I find this situation both frustrating and unacceptable since my finances are already stretched. The sudden hold on my account and grades is causing unnecessary stress and hindering my progress in my doctoral program.
I request an immediate review and resolution of this matter. I also urge Capella University to provide a clear and detailed explanation of why this issue has only been raised now and why the amount has increased so drastically.
If this issue is not resolved promptly, I will have no choice but to take further action, including filing a complaint with the appropriate regulatory bodies and sharing my experience with other students and prospective enrollees.
Thank you for your prompt attention to this serious matter.
Sincerely,
Michael King
