On April 30, 2022, I made a $1,000 deposit and signed a written commitment with Coeur d'Alene Honda (CdH) to secure the purchase of a specific vehicle. It was made clear that a portion of the deposit would be non-refundable if I changed my mind. After waiting for 2-1/2 months, the vehicle finally arrived on July 11. However, to my surprise, CdH suddenly refused to sell it to me.
On Friday, July 15, I went to CdH to sign the necessary paperwork and take possession of the car. While in the middle of signing, CdH informed me that they were unable to provide the interest rate that had been guaranteed to me. This interest rate was documented in a pre-approval letter from ***. CdH stated that I would need to pay an additional percent. Unfortunately, it was too late to resolve the issue with the Gesa underwriter as they were closed. I requested to postpone signing the remaining paperwork until the next day so I could sort things out with Gesa and return to pick up the car.
The following morning, on Saturday, July 16, I contacted Gesa and they assured me that the pre-approved interest rate was available to CdH. They provided two options for CdH: (1) to contact the Gesa underwriter for access to my pre-approved ***% rate, or (2) to provide a purchase order that I could send to Gesa, who would arrange for me to pick up a cashier's check for the loan by 1 pm that same day. With either option, the financing could be completed and I could pick up the car on Saturday. I immediately called CdH to inform them about Gesa's response and requested to return and pick up the car that same day.
However, CdH informed me that they had decided not to sell the car to me after all and advised me to find a car elsewhere. This would mean a much longer wait and a higher price, putting me in a difficult situation. It is important to note that on Friday, when I mentioned returning the next day after resolving the interest rate with Gesa, a CdH employee unexpectedly approached me with a piece of paper and informed me that they had refunded my $1,000 deposit from April 30. They wanted me to sign for it, even though I had not requested a return of the deposit and this went against my wishes.
