Dorrance Publishing Company deceives and defrauds
That company isn't as reputable as they seem. They size you up to see how much money they can get from you as they defraud you. They can send you to RoseDog, a lower tier service just to get you in, if your budget is low. Or they can keep you with the Dorrance name to charge a higher fee. They keep changing the project manager on you. The quality you get is shockingly low. During production, they ignore most of your requests for revisions to drag out the process or charge extra. They could frustrate you into not making the last payments by not being responsive to pocket your money with impunity. I have disbursed $2220 to them and got not much back. I had to get my own cover designer. The quality of the type setting for the content is unusable.
Avoid them at all costs. If they send you to the lower tier RoseDog, absolutely get away from them.
Claimed loss: $2220

Breach of contract
Dorrance charged my credit card $322.00 w/out my authorization FRAUD. GROSS MISREPRESENTATION by Dorrance of the services Dorrance would provide and/or their ability to do so:(required me to approve or reject and make corrections,5 sets of page proofs when I had approved the 1st set of proofs). Charged an extra $50.00 outside of agreement for the editor...
Read full review of Dorrance PublishingPublished a book with Dorrance publishing company in 2006 and haven't gotten paid a dime when it's in all the book stores
I worked my butt off for 8 years writing the book 'Streets of Darkness by Susan (los ) Justice and paid $4,200 for Dorrance publishing company Rose dog books to have the book published and it has been selling like crazy since 2006 because my friends ordered it.. my library ordered three of them.. my mother ordered one and I ordered one and I have not gotten paid a dime from this publishing company since 2006 when it was published and I have called and raised hell otherwise and they sent me a statement saying I didn't make any sales... I have found my book in many a bookstores in the country which in Texas is a five-star reading and a bookstore in Cleveland which Ohio is where I lived with a four-star reading and yet doran's publishing company has failed to disclose the actual sales of my book which is constantly on Amazon and getting sold there and yet I have not received a dime of my contract percentage... And there is a class action lawsuit against them by another woman who wrote she leaves of 10 houses or something like that... And I want to know what's going to happen with this complete because I want something done about this.. this is not right for them to do and they have also kept all the profits of the sales of my book and broke the contract... And it is pretty sickening that a publishing company can get away with this...
Desired outcome: I want to be a part of the Dorrance publishing company class action lawsuit against them and I want the actual sales of my book disclosed and I want what is due to me in the royalties
I TOO Have been ghosted by Dorrance-once they got my money, they disappeared and still have not paid me a nickel for my book AND they never did the marketing I was promised. Take it from me, if you want to give away thousands of dollars for nothing, then publish with Dorrance.

Overall publishing experience
Publishing with this company is a learning experience ill never forget. They need to be criminally charged for hiding sales of books sold. There is already a class action lawsuit filed against them.
At first, I felt comfortable with them but my book was supposed to be completed in a 90-business-day period it was not. I never got my social media package and was offered free editing but they still neglected to do that correctly.
I already filed complaints with the BBB and Attorney General's Office no results. I hope the jury finds them guilty and puts them out of business.
Getting back my manuscript
Almost a year ago I sent " no title" manuscript and decided fee was too high. Requested it back via phone answer machine. Could you please send it back. Lost another plus 1200 dollars through Xlibris and would like at least one back. Will reimburse mailing cost if need be

Quality of product and service
I submitted my manuscript to Dorrance Publishing one year ago, August 12, 2021. It was read speedily and I was informed within a few days that Dorrance would publish my novel. I thought $7000 was a lot to spend to publish a 75,000 word historical romance, but based on the positive company reviews I read online, I decided to proceed with Dorrance.
One year later, I still have no manuscript. I have made every payment on time, so cost is not the issue. The author review copies Dorrance has sent to me for review are filled with incomprehensible errors. I was told that once I gave final approval to my manuscript, it would be sent to a quality assurance department for final review and polishing. I would like to know who works in their QA department, because the "polished" versions returned to me are filled with glaring issues and don't match the manuscript I approved. I cannot get a clean, professional document out of them, and at this point, I doubt I ever will.
I continue to submit emails asking for information about the status of my book, but my emails are not returned. Even my email to David Zeolla, the president of Dorrance, has gone unanswered -- but he was very quick to communicate with me before I signed a contract and he encouraged me to contact him at any time with questions.
Here is the essence of my complaint: the company is very friendly until they have received full payment, and then they will ignore you.
I doubt that I will ever get a published book or my money returned from this company, but I hope others will read my review and reconsider this publisher. I am heartbroken because publishing a novel was a big deal for me, and I saved for years to raise the money to publish my book. Dorrance does not care about their clients; they care only for their profits.
Desired outcome: I would a complete refund and my contract torn up so I can proceed with another publisher.
Thank you for your candor, Rhonda H. I just published a review on Yelp. I never accepted their proposal, but it was so different from the information the rep gave me on the phone, it raised a bright, red flag. With the exception of one, the reviews there are all scathing.
I looked at their Facebook page and saw the post of a woman who is probably about to spend the thousands of dollars she admits she doesn't have and told her to read the reviews before she sends any money. I just hope she does.
How they've been able to stay in business after scamming so many people is an enigma. If I were you, I'd consider writing to the US Attorney General. They should not be allowed to continue their charade.
Book Publishe April 2013-Every black mans struggle by Sgt.james Willis
My Book Every Black Man's Struggle was published April 2012 and I have never received payments for the Book Sales or Reports on the book in 8 years. The book has sold world wide and I continue to receive statements with my name on them yet someone else Book sales.I have reported this to Dorrance numerous times in 8 years and get no return explainations or sales reports.I have asked my lawyer to sue Dorrance Publishing Company in June 2022.I think this is a disgrace for a honorably discharged veteran who served in Viet Nam War
Desired outcome: I want the sales reports over 8 years and monies sent to me for sales by your company of my book
Service/Customer Service
I am really upset and frustrated I spoke to someone yesterday in regards to this. Informed her that I left message and sent email weeks ago because in the portal it showed my payments start July and it showed duplicate payment for that month. She told me that was incorrect but confirmed my payment would begin in July. Now there is a email about payment in May. I do not have that and didn’t plan for it because of what I saw on the portal. Not happy with the partnership we have so far, can’t get anyone when I call, error with my name and this inconsistency with the billing. All of this is reason to reconsider our agreement.
I need someone to contact me today.

Liars - rip off
Dorrance was a nightmare. I sent them my manuscript One Child Alone. Dorrance published my book in August 2021. To date, I received no royalties. They said no book was sold. That is a lie. I know of the number of books my boss bought for his daughters, friends, and more. I have a list of the people who bought the book, yet Dorrance gave me no royalties, stating no book was sold.
Dorrance is very disorganized and in my opinion liars. I do not recommend Dorrance to any new author. I have documents to file against them.
Desired outcome: Refund, an account of all books sold in detail so I can check it out.
There was a Class Action Lawsuit filed this year on them. I don't know who is involved but you ain't the only one. Google it
Book
Once they get the money they don't give a damn about you. They put a nonsensical price on your book without any coordination or consulting with you. I would not use them in the future. The worst company I have ever worked with. Not friendly or helpful people. You are on your own, all they do is refer you to the contact they are not your consulting friends in your publishing work. Worst than the worst.
Desired outcome: None
It's hard for me to imagine anyone worse than Outskirts Press. Having read the comment above, I think it might be an unsual situation. I have heard excellent things about Dorrance and I would not recommend Outskirts to anyone.
My Book Dancing the Two Steps was published in 2016 and is being sold on amazon and todate I have not received any royalties.
My book needed NO WORK. I designed the cover did all of the illustrations and gave it to Dorrance Publishing, they made some changes to the bio and the book was "published." They claimed the book had no sales when I would follow up and I needed to market it myself even though I paid them over $4, 000.00. However, I have received calls from buyers of the book.
Michael Knapp would not even take my calls. It has been five years and I have not received any royalties.
Desired outcome: I would like Dorriance to remove my book from amazon so I can!
Yes I have had a very bad experience with them and Michael as well, they are cold cold individuals not helpful. The worst company I have dealt with.
not able to contact anyone
july1 to july19 not returning any phone calls, only a prerecorded message on any phone number I have used.
Desired outcome: return me phone call [protected]
Halloween Colors by Marvetta Y. Clark
I purchased 3 copies of the book. They are incomplete, only contain11 pages. The rest of the pages are blank.

Desired outcome: I would either like a refund or 3 complete books.
Have not received payments.
I paid Dorrance Publishing for their services on 08/19/2010.

In 21 years I have only received $15.08 in royalties and Dorrance Publishing has made no attempt to pay me as per their contract.
In 2013 I attempted to reach them and received nothing but a run around.
I have been told that my book has not had enough sales to warrant payment?
I want detailed records of the sales logs for the last 20 years.
I have records that show sales and have even bought my own book on Amazon therefor I know they are being dishonest and I would like them held accountable.
Sincerely,
Michael S Davis
Desired outcome: I want the money they owe me!
Land of the rivers by charles david poole
PRICE. You have priced my book at $18.00. It is a 244 page paperback book and should be available for a lot less. $12.00 would be high. Why not something like $10.00? After all, if the book sells, you make money. And if the price is made reasonable, perhaps Barnes and Noble would stock it. As it is, nobody will touch it.
Also, after I was assured four times by two different people that my book would be sent to my local bookstore, it never was. I cannot help questioning whether your company ever intended to sell my book, or was your intent simply to get my up-front money and go on to the next writer? I have four more novels ready to print, but I will not consider using your services for them under the present circumstances.
Desired outcome: reduce price and resubmit to major booksellers nationwide.
I just published Ground of the Devil: Book Two and Dorrence Publishing did a terrible job editing and not correcting missed spelled words and not removing corrections and i have no sales yet, How'ever they did a great job with the cover design and back cover but mistakes inside was not taken care of. My first book, Ground of the Devil published by Page Publishing did a great job on my first book and I sold hundreds of copies. It's too early to tell how i rate Dorrence/ Rosedog Books because i just published the second book but so far i rate them no better than a 1 right now.
Payments
I published a book with Dorrance a few years ago and they have not sent me anything kind of payment yet. Every time I call and ask them about this they always say that your book has not sold enough copies for a payment to be made at this point.
What?
I don't care if my book only sold one copy. Pay me for that one sale. I've sold a lot more than one copy of my book and they need to start sending out quarterly payments and a record of the number of sales for that quarter.
They've even sent me false records of sales that said your book had no sales this quarter. That's a big lie because I've had friends buy it and even I bought my own book so how can they say that there were no sales? That's a stupid statement because my friends and I have been buying copies.
If they don't start sending my payments I may have to take legal action.
I also wrote a book and had it published by Dorrance. I told them in the beginning that my spelling wasn't the greatest and they assured me that they would check the spelling. When I wrote to ask why they didn't fix the spelling they said it is an electronic checker or something to that effect and I told them that I also have spell check when I wrote the book. There were some misused words such as "thrown" when I should have written "throne" and "know" when I should have written "no". I paid completely upfront and have gotten the run around ever since. I too have had friends and people from my Facebook group buy my book and they also told me that there were no sales of my book. When I tried to go to the website to check the status of sales for some reason they knew I was there checking and sent me an email saying that I can only get the figures twice a year. Once on January 1st and July 1st. July 1st has come and gone and no response from them. I just sent an email a few moments ago to them asking the status of my book. I will wait to see what they say. I strongly recommend that anyone reading this choose a different publisher.
Published book
I published my book with Dorrance/Rosedog in 2005. Things were going along pretty well until they signed on with Amazon to sell my book. Since then, I have not been paid for ANY of the books sold on Amazon. Rosedog Publishing swears no books have been sold, but I know of so many books being bought, the months they were bought, places, people, etc. I even had a Melbourne, Australia city library buy the book because I saw it on their shelves myself, yet still I have not been paid! When I contacted Amazon, they had no listing of me. Recently I was told the book had to go into its second printing because they had been sold out. I am beyond angry with this publishing company and want to know WHO has been getting the money for all these books that have been sold since at least 2007?
Your company is a scam. You make all the money and tell me I am not selling books when I know 40 people who bought them on line. A publishing company that has an answering machine? Big flag. Mike Knapp and the rest of you have ignored all my calls. How can you sleep at night. How do you stay in business when so many people give you four thousand dollars. All my hard work and my copyright. You have broken the contract. I do not want anything to do with your company and I have talked to the BBB You have not heard the last me.
Book
When I submitted my book for them to publish I was told it would be out on February 17th in my contract. Now they are saying that the process will still be going all through summer. On top of that I was told I missed a payment in which I did not. I had to send a screen shot of my bank statement. This is bull crap. Had I known it would take over a year to publish I would have looked into another Publisher. I am never informed on what is going on unless I ask. I had written a second book but since finding out that this book is going to take longer than I was told, I will be finding another publisher for that one.
As an experienced book seller and editor, who has a book she wants to publish, I think the complaints are good to read. However, knowing how many people overreact to just about everything, I take it with a grain of salt. I won't use this publisher because I know better than to go into something without research. Thanks.
They do nothing!
Dorrance Book Publishing charged me $899 for the publishing package they advertise. In addition they charged me $1320 for editing which was remarkably poor, and another $120 for “gallery editing”, that was so unsatisfactory after more than six months of working with them I went to another company.
Dorrance publishing has a class action lawsuit against them. Sadly I’ve gotten scammed by them to they scam some and are OK to others. It’s who they pick Ashley Augusten knows exactly what she is doing.
There’s a special cast of characters that do it over and over again to people take their money and give them very little profit. You’re at a contract with them and they’re still keeping your money they need to be stopped.
I paid $4, 000.00 to publish my book. In a year and a half I made $130.00 dollars. How can this go on! I want nothing to do with your company. Julie Cubbage Devlin
Fees
When i was a child, I was the outcast of the school, nobody would talk to me and they always ignored me. These terrible memories inspired me to write about it. When I saw that Dorrance will review and publish your book for free, i turned to them. I went through the long process of writing my book. Finally, I got a letter in the mail saying "We will be honored to publish your story. There will be a fee of 6, 000-10, 000$. They say it's free... huh!
Sounds like a bit FAT SCAM! That is how scams function. They tell the ones, who want to work, to pay them. It doesn't matter if it is a publishing company. The author should not be solicited to spend money on a speculation that they, the company, do not care about themselves. In other words, the authors they solicit are their consumers (customers).
i found their ad in are phonebook and its says they will send you a free authors guide. in order for your book to sell you have to pay for it to be published and printed. No company would make money if they paid for publishing/printing.
