I wanted someone to come to my house and replace my SSD drive. I called what was listed as "Converse Computer Repair" which I later found out was just one of the names Karl's uses. They said they would have a technician come the next day.
The tech arrived at 3pm last Wednesday. The job was to replace the existing 128gb SSD "C" drive with the new 500gb SSD drive I had already purchased.
I sat in the room where he was working and ar 3:45 I could tell he was having a problem with something- so I asked him. He said he was having a problem getting a crew out that was holding the drive.
At 4pm he said he got it (one hour after he started) and showed me the drive. I was concerned when I saw what he had so I went and looked at it and told him that wasn't the SSD it was the 1tb data backup drive!
He said his instructions for the job were wrong or incomplete...
He took another 10-15 minutes to reinstall the "D" drive.
Then he started looking for the SSD and couldn't find it even asking me to look. Since I'm not a computer tech I had no idea.
At one point he said he thought the optical DVD/CD drive was the "C" drive and I said no it was the DVD drive. After a while he asked if I would be ok if he took out the DVD and put the SSD there - I said no.
He went back to looking and finally said he had found it - it was a stick (NVMe - like RAM) rather than the 2.5" drive - but it took him 30 minutes to recognize it - in a very small vitually empty pc case.
Then at 4:45 he said he didn't have the adaptor he needed but thought he had one in his car. He didn't.
He said he would leave and go get one and come back that evening. He required that I pay him at that point - and I said for what - all he had done that had anything to do with what I had requested was to take the front and side off the case and identify the SSD. Since my PC was open and nothing had been done I said I would pay it - but that I would be fighting it. He mentioned I would have to pay him again when he came back and actually fixed my PC. He left at 4:50 - almost 2 hours after he arrived - and nothing had been done that I had requested.
At 7:30 I hadn’t heard anything so I called the number he had called me from and got the voice mail. A half hour or so later someone called and asked what I needed and I told him we were sitting there waiting. He said he'd check on it.
No one called back Wednesday evening.
Around 8am on Thursday the tech called and said he understood I had called and wanted to know why...I told him he said he would be back and never did and didn't let us know.
He said the part wasn't there and since it probably wouldn't be there on Thursday he said he'd have to come on the 17th when he got back because he was going on vacation the next day...no apology for not letting me know.
They have a note on their emails saying the customer would have to pay for an hour if we didn't let you know about a change. What about when they don't?
I took my PC in to a local shop and they completed the job in less than 24 hours and charged me less that what Karl's charged me for doing nothing!
I sent a message to Karl's asking for a full refund and they came back a couple of days later saying I had been billed appropriate;y but they were willing to refund 30 minutes of the time if I signed a waiver form - which I refused. I asked them if I contracted with them to mow their lawn, showed up and got the mower out and them left 2 hours later without mowing - would they pay me? They sent me another email today saying they couldn't refund my money.
Recommendation: Don't be stupid like me - no matter what the name of the company says - check them out and if they are really Karl's do not do business with them. Read the reviews - Even the employee reviews on recruiting sites are bad!
They promised you a service, and what did you get? A tech who didn’t even know what he was doing and left you with an open PC and no completed job. It's unacceptable. They should be embarrassed about how they handled your request.
You were right to refuse their pitiful offer of a half-hour refund. They owe you a full refund for wasting your time and causing you unnecessary stress. Your comparison to mowing a lawn perfectly highlights the absurdity of their position.
Keep pushing back and making your story heard. They need to understand that customers won’t stand for this kind of treatment. You deserve your money back and an apology. Stay strong and demand the respect and service you were promised.
