Kars4Kids review: Got more than I expected

I see that there are some complaints about this organization. I know that the donation goes to Orthodox Jewish Kids Camps. I am a physician and take care of a lot of people from their community. They treat me with respect so I have no problem donating to them and the process is easy. I looked into donating to other organizations but they wanted more information and appeared critical of the car being donated but it was much easier to Kars4Kids. They came and picked up the car. I had just fixed up a 15 year old Infiniti that I was the original owner and it was driving great. The book value was between $6500-$8000. I felt a bouncing in the back of the car and took it to a reliable repair shop that I had used before. They told me that the entire back axle had rusted out and broken and that it would be about $4000 to repair and could not guarantee that they would not find something else while fixing it. He was honest with me and said that it was a 15 year old car with a lot of rust on the bottom and suggested that I not fix it. I realized this would be difficult to sell so I decided to donate it. I did not hear from them for a long time and was wondering what happened. They finally were able to get in touch with me and they said that they tried to email me but my emails kept bouncing back to them because I had somehow blocked their emails. I had gone through my emails and blocked a lot of junk emails and I must have accidentally deleted and blocked them too. To my surprise, they sold the care for $6100. Much more than I could have sold it for. Maybe to a mechanic who could fix the axle because otherwise it was a great car. but not worth spending $4000 and possibly more to fix a car that would be worth $6-$7,000 after being fixed. Now I have a $6100 tax donation if my accountant is able to itemize my deductions and the money went to a kids camp. Like I said, the Orthodox community has treated me with a lot of respect and I don't mind doing charity work for their community as long as I get a thank you. It worked out for me. I am sure that some of these cars are sold for a lot less than blue book value but that is the way it goes. This did not happen in my case.

Recommendation: You only get the tax deduction if you itemize and you only get the valuation that they sell it for, not what you think it is worth. If you think it is worth more then sell it yourself.

Forget about using the voucher. It is not worth it.
