Our 18 yr old daughter inadvertently signed up for a McAfee Antivirus (reoccurring annual fee) when she received a computer for Christmas when she was 14 years old. The PC died a year later and was replaced by a MAC. We (her parents) didn't know she signed up 4 years ago for a $129.99 annual software agreement as a minor, and she wasn't mature or savvy enough to know what she was committing to. She's now in college and I just noticed a reoccurring fee hit her checking account for $149.99 as it had apparently last year (all in retrospect). I called McAfee who was insistent we keep the newly minted (11/24/23) purchase to use on any device in the household. I stated the original purchase was made by a minor, who was unaware until today the charges have repeated for 4 years (the most recent being while she was 18, and a freshman in college). They didn't budge - offering a 50% discount on a 2-day-old plan we do not need. Eventually, they relented and issued a credit for the two-day-old transaction. How can any reputable company enforce subscription charges made by a minor without parental awareness, for in this case an antivirus plan on a device that hasn't existed for three of the four years in question? Shame on McAfee for preying on minors and not appropriately addressing the issue when sincerely brought to their attention.
Claimed loss: $309.[protected] and 2022 charges)
Desired outcome: Refund for the amount paid by my then-minor daughter from her personal checking account without her parent's knowledge
Welcome to McAfee. Of course you were in the dark. I dont put this tybe of behavior by McAfee. Believe me, they knew exactly what they were doing. Im sure they knew she was limited & a minor. this is what they do. Generate money with as little knowledge as possible. ive heard of alot worst. Stay with Norton & all will be fine. McAfee is corrupt, theyre liars & majority of employees donot kno what theyre doing. Get ur money , screw u around & more if they can.
