Great Recipe Manager
Paprika 3 is a great recipe manager. It will easily pull recipes from websites. Categories tags are great. No complaints on recipe aspect as it does recipe management very well.
Unfortunately, the additional Pantry and Groceries features I find are mediocre. I’m going to be that person that points out what I think is lacking, even though I really do like the app.
Groceries list would be much more helpful if there was a top level master buy list that optionally fed into other lists. In my case, the My Grocery List should contain everything that I need to purchase. I have also created lists for Costco and other stores because some items are only available at a specific location. Kirkland products obviously are only available at Costco, and as such a branded product goes into the Costco list. However, an item can only exist in one list, so when I put an item into the Costco list, it is not shown in any other lists. It would be helpful if I can see everything I need to buy together in one main My Grocery List, and then optionally assign items to populate other lists. By extension, when an item is checked off in one list, it’s also checked off in the other lists.
Pantry Item has no Notes section, but the Groceries section does. Moving an item from Groceries to Pantry loses any notes that were added to Groceries.
Recipes pull Ingredients from Pantry only when it finds it as an exact match. For example, the recipe Chiliquiles with Corn Tortillas calls for “Corn Torillas”. If my Pantry item is “Corn Tortillas Mission Brand” then it will not be found as usable by the Recipe.
It would be helpful to have a Pantry item main field to indicate as a generic item (e.g., corn tortilla), but then have Notes field so that I can use it to specify the brand or type (e.g., Mission Brand) that I have in Pantry. Then, of course, that brand or type would carry over to fill in Notes for Groceries.
Pantry Item has no photo. This would be useful for brand specific needs to be optionally shown in the Groceries list. If my partner knows what the wrapper looks like then it’s easier to find item in a sea of shelves.
It would be nice to have a Pantry item field for purchase quantity (to be used in Groceries) and a usable Recipe quantity. E.g.,
a. I have 2 Packs of 10 count Corn Tortillas Mission Brand = 20 tortillas available for Recipes.
b. I have 2 Cans of 10 ounce Stewed Tomatoes = 20 ounce available for Recipes.
Choose Ingredients option (for adding to the Groceries list) in a Recipe does not accurately reflect the quantity available in Pantry. E.g., Corn Tortillas has 5 quantity in Pantry. Recipe calls for 10 tortillas. Within Ingredients of the Recipe shows quantity 10 (because Recipe calls for it) and that I have it in stock and don’t need to buy (unchecked), even though I’m short 5 tortillas.
Overall, Paprika 3 is the best recipe application for me. iOS has more features than Android, but both are sufficient. Desktop app is good too, and all sync quickly. The additional Pantry and Groceries list features are a bit weak, and frustrating because they are almost there in being quite usable.
I wouldn’t use any other recipe manager.
