Bait & Switch
This company advertises on the Internet old photo
restoration. I contacted the owner and was told that it was difficult to estimate the cost
without seeing the photograph. However the cost would be between $10 and $100 depending on the condition and the amount of work needed. The shipping was free.
When I called to get the price the cost shot up to $300 per photograph and when I said that it was way higher than I wanted to pay and asked for the return of my photos I was charged shipping to and from Chamberlain
Of $38. Definitely a bait and switch operation . Buyer Beware!
Bad service
Chamberlain Restoration is a complete fraud. He initially comes off as knowing what he is doing, but in reality, he is just a con. He provides you with a pre-paid FedEx envelope and that is where the fraud begins. My daughter found him on the internet and sent him some old family photos to be restored as surprise for me. After he received them, he then gave her the quote for the work. She was shocked at the prices for the 3 small pictures she sent him to be restored. He told her he would not do the work until he received a check for half of what the total would be. He wanted $400.00 to do minimum restoration on one 5x7 with a small tear in the middle. To make the cost more affordable, talked us into a 50% restore. Not knowing exactly what this meant, he said the picture would look perfect just not as dark and crisp as a 100% restore. For this he charged us $200. He also supposedly did a 70% restore of one 4x6 photo for $150.00 and 100% restore of one 4x4 for $100.00 that just needed to be darkened a little as the photo was not that old. The total came to over $450.00 for the most inferior work I have ever seen. After seeing the finished pictures, my son called Mark and let him know how disappointed we were with his work. We let him know that the 70% restore of my mom no longer had any value because he made it look like a ghoulish and unsettling representation of her. My son told him that he uses photo shop quite a bit and it looked to him like he just photo shopped two right eyes onto her face. He admitted that is what he did. He said he did restore the rest of the picture though. He said we only paid for a 70% restore and if we wanted her face to be complete, we would have to pay him $300.00 more and he would fix her face. For him to have restored the rest of the photo and not the face, and then to tell us it would be an additional $300.00 to finish the job is so horrible and unethical. The 50% restore of the 4x6 that had a small tear in the middle was also horrible. He only took a brown marker and filled in the tear so now instead of a tear in an old sepia tone photo, it's a photo with a brown spot in the middle. It looks ridiculous. He did nothing else to the photo for $200.00. I have to question the intelligence of having done anything at all because it would have looked better to simply leave the damage rather than make the center of the image look like an anachronistic cartoonish anomaly. He is, after all, in the business of making photos look better right? This picture is not at all what he explained to us that it would be. Also, he admitted that he took the 100% restore of the 4x4 photo and just took a picture of it and printed it on 4x6 paper. It too looked ridiculous with a one inch white border on both sides of the photo for $100.00. We contacted him again and tried to get him to explain why he doesn't post prices on his web site. Why he doesn't send proofs of the pictures before you have to pay in full for them. We never got to see the finished product before we paid for them. You have to pay by check and he waits for the check to clear before he sends you the supposedly restored photos. You basically have no recourse. We paid a ridiculous amount of money for special family photos that look so horrible, they no longer have any value. I would never put these pictures out for anyone to see. When we took exception to the appearance of my mom in the 70% restore photo, he informed us that if we wanted a full restore, it would cost an additional $300.00. We said to him based on that number, the total restore should have cost $450.00. Now the $150.00 we paid is only 33% of that number, so it sounds like either, you're trying to rip us off now by quoting an inflated price for the remainder of the work or you actually only did 33% of the work up front and ripped us off from the start. He had no response. Clearly, he's not even confident with his own work as he demands money up front and doesn't offer proofs like any other professional would. If you value your family photos and you work hard for your money, don't waste your memories and your hard work on Mark Chamberlain. He is a fraud and a con. Anyone who is proud of the work they do, would do anything to make things right with their customers. He is only interested in your money, not your photos or your memories.
I used Chamberlain Restorations to have a person removed from my professionally taken 10x12 photo. You would never know there was another person in the picture now. They did an absolutely impeccable job and I am more than thrilled with the results.
6 months later and he still has my photos. I believe this man has a mental problem, seriously. He gets a sick satisfaction of holding peoples photos as hostage and trying to manipulate them. The BBB is of no use in helping and they continue to keep his business as in good standing. He uses this to defend himself although he has multiple extremely negative reviews on many different review sites, from people who have experienced the same thing. I believe he is a sick man. At this point I pity him. He probably has some kind of mental disorder. Why else would someone keep doing this? I don't believe money is his motive. He loves to manipulate people and make them feel bad. He loves ending up with the upper hand. I tried to get the police involved but they said it was a civil matter and it was not something they could deal with. Mr. Chamberlain has tried to twist this to discredit me. I believe he needs professional help. Please feel free to contact me at [protected] or giggles60@gmail.com. My name is Terry. There is no legal recourse but we CAN spread the word. Please check out the other websites that review businesses. You'll see a lot more about Chamberlain restoration. He operates under other business names as well. pissedconsumer.com
I contacted them through email and have been receiving phone calls on a daily basis ever since. It worries me that a business is so desperate that they hound possible customers. That is a big turn off for me. I want my old photo repaired, but on my own time and I refuse to be harassed about getting it done asap. Business comes to you ... not the other way around.
Wish I had read these reviews before I hired this company. There are about six different complaint sites about this guy. That has to be an all time record.
Based on what I saw on Mr. Chamberlain's website, I hired him to restore several family photos. He did a good job on the black and white photos, but the work on the color photos was unacceptable. He charged me $186. to reproduce a color photo. The reproduction was blurry and looked like a series of dots on photo paper. Definitely not something you would frame and put up in your house. I sent Mr. Chamberlain an e-mail asking for a refund. He called and told me that the photo was out of focus when it was taken and that there were other problems with the original photo. I had the photo framed in my dorm room in the 70s; there was nothing wrong with how it was taken. If there was a problem with the original photo, didn't he think this information should have been shared with me before he took my money? He admitted that the people who hire him expect him to restore the photos to like-new. If he knew he could not perform as expected he should have told me from the onset. Obviously, he wanted my money and was willing to sell his integrity for $186.
The guy isn't honest and is not going to deliver what he promises. I'm going to sue him to get my money back. Unless you want to deal with the same headache, go somewhere else.
I strongly disagree with this, I know this is old but I must say I've used him 2 times once after my house fire 3 years ago (2011) where he not only recovered 1, 500 pictures that TWO other companies said was "impossible, they where lost forever and I should just throw them out" he got them out and then on top of that restored and reprinted well over half of them to better than they where before! The 2nd time was just last year (2013), I used them was for my parents anniversary he restored some movie reels we had of our family vacations, converted them to DVD they again where incredible! I have recommended them to friends and family who all have had the same OUTSTANDING results, Mark you and your company do beautiful work! Anyone reading this looking to use him should, if he cant fix it he will be honest and tell you or if he can only fix something to a certain amount he will tell you he has been nothing but honest with myself and the people I referred to him, honesty is nice to have in this world, which is why I felt the need to comment on these posts even though they are old, because honesty was most definitely needed here.
Awful, Awful, AWFUL! I wish I had read reviews first -- and the info posted on BBB. AND their terms about when, how payment is due and when should have been a big red flag. Rude staff, the owner is a liar, bully, a cheat and cannot take notes, communicate or follow instructions. Mistakes are the client's fault! My original photos were held hostage and I was asked for final payment BEFORE I was allowed to see the crappy work he did. It was clearly a do-over since he had not followed any of the requests I made when we first met. He said he’d never had a complaint like mine (seriously?); well looking at the BBB and other consumer complaint sites indicates that, too, is a big fat lie. When I cancelled the order he demanded I sign a release saying I was satisfied with his work (say WHAT?). I took a Police Officer with me to retrieve my original photos and ended up having to pay for the full order ($400) for cheap copies I will never use. But at least I got my original photos back. Now I'm looking for any way I can to tell the world how awful this guy is. An expensive lesson, for sure. After meeting the guy, even the Police Officer said she understood why I was frustrated.
I had Chamberlain Restoration restore 2 family photographs for me. They turned out great. I loved the free Federal Express, it saved me money. Everyone we spoke with at there office were very nice & Mr. Chamberlain called me himself before the job started & after I received my final prints to make sure I was completely satisfied.
Hi my name is Mark Chamberlain I am the owner of the company they filed the complaint about.
We emailed finial proofs to the client to review which they did. They approved all restorations which I have copies of there approval emails that I would be happy to forward to anyone interested. I believe the only reason they are complaining is after they received our high resolution proofs & approved all the images they decided they had a high quality digital copy of everything they wanted they decided to start complaining to see if I would give them some of their money back. So when they started complaining & asked for money back I reminded them they approved everything. Then they just started yelling profanity at me & hung up on me & then filled out the complaint on this web site. We have a perfect BBB record & no complaints with the attorney general offices. We are a honest company that does great work. If you have any questions call my cell phone number directly at [protected]. If you notice the people filing the complaint don't list there phone number or email address or anyway to contact them. They do this because they are not telling the truth.
