As many people stated, I am a preferred subscriber that received a card inside the Readers Digest magazine. I tried to log on per the instructions on the card, but to no avail. Nothing!
Readers Digest has been, in the past, one of the most subscribed and reputive magazine, so for this scam to be associated with this magazine, astounds me. I cannot believe that they do not stand behind whatever it is they are offering.

Misleading Advertising
I ordered a Canadian Music/Artists CD last year from a card that was enclosed with our RD subscription. The price indicated was $28.00 and change on the card plus shipping and handling. There were a few good songs on it and I remember the $28 standing out clearly in my mind because I have ordered maybe 3 things in my life from a mail-in. I do all remote purchasing on line where you can see the shipping, pricing, and have a contract and buyer protection (it was around the time I was spending postage stamps like pennies on the RD sweepstakes contests that I finally got sick of trying to keep up with).
I received the CD which had the expected music, feeling it was a bit pricey for what was offered, but since I'd ordered it knowing that, I'd pay for it. Then I saw the invoice was for over $88.00!
That was a LONG way from $28 and change! Gosh I wish I had the card - there wasn't any asterisk by the price or fine print apparent saying it would be 3 payments of $28 plus shipping. It was false advertising if my memory serves me right.
I wouldn't care HOW good the music was, no CD is worth $88 to me...
So now the collection calls have begun. I told them keep calling.

Information included in the monthly subscription indicating the existence of a website where we are directed to go and enter a special access code provided to enter for a chance to win a specific prize does not exist. The most current example is the prize to be drawn for Nov.30/09 for a Wii sports deluxe package at the www.rd.ca/wiisports . There is no such site and this is not the first time this has happened.
Readers Digest marketing practices are very much misleading. My wife got a letter, saying that she had won thousands of dollars. She just needed to reply to the mail in.
Thinking that Readers Digest Canada as a very old and reputable company, she mailed in thinking that she has won.
They kept sending a ``free copy of their magazines``every month ...
We were surprised to find out later that they wanted my wife to pay for the magazines. We have ignored they invoices.
This is a very dishonest marketing practice and we intend to contact BBB and report the situation.
fooling us
for Gods sake, how can you send us a raffle like thing for a nikon l19 coolfix digicam that we cannot find.this webpage doesnt exist!
As a long time customer of RD, I was expecting to be treated somewhat better than I have been.I am receiving a bill for a gift subscription tha I started a few years ago.My son, the recipient of this gift.has moved from Ont to Alberta..That was a year ago. I spoke to someone in your organization many months ago and cancelled my subscription.I now receive my monthly threat to pay a bill that I DO NOT have. I do not respond well to unwanted correspondence . If you believe that your threats are going to force me to pay, you may have to rethink what you have stated.

Reader's Digest----Bloody rogues! They forced me into buying a book I did not ask for. While they send you(the subcribers) countless letters, tempting you to enter competitions, somewhere down the line, they cheat you into paying for a bk they drop at your doorstep. If you question them, they simply tell you that you requested for it and then start sending you letters issuing legal threats into paying up. they refuse to take the book back. ###s!
I just received my access code but when I went to the site, it said to enter Access Code, I tried but they said that that was an invalid number, what do I do now. Access Code ws 44287

I am sorry to learn that you have been unable to enter the draw but can assure you that the website exists and the contest is valid. The same was true in 2009.
Allow me to explain that, if you are trying to find the link readersdigest.ca/nikon through a search engine (Google, Bing, Yahoo, etc.), it is possible that you will not be able to access the website to enter the contest.
To access the URL provided on the card you received, you must type it in the address bar of your web browser (if you need help locating the address bar, perhaps you can contact a friend or your Internet Service Provider).
You may also click "File" then "Open" in your web browser (for example, Internet Explorer) and type the address in the space provided. Be sure to type the address in lower case as upper case may not work.
I hope this will be of help to you and I wish you the best of luck.

Fraud and lies
I received in the mail a letter from Reader's Digest. The letter came in a plain white envelope, post marked from Canada. It also had a check in it for $3, 481.10. The check was made out from AIG Annuity Insurance Company
The letter said I had won a lump sum payout of $255, 069.00. The check I received was to cover any charges that may be required before I receive my funds. It was singed by Jonathan Walsh, Prize Disbursement. Nice picture of him too.
To receive my funds I was to contact Paul Givon or Erika Cohn at [protected] to activate my claim before I deposit the check in my bank.
When I called the man was very Vague about how I won the money. He said I had to put the check in my bank and then call him back. At that point he would get the information he need to put the rest of the money into my account. Big Red Flag went up in my head.
I looked Reader's Digest up on the internet. Checked for Sweepstakes rip off and found out the letter was a rip off. My big concern is people who would take this serious and not think to look in to it before they put the money in the bank.
The complaint has been investigated and resolved to the customer’s satisfaction.
got the letter in with the same tlephone number and a cashiers Check for $3600.00 and to call the number before depositing the check. verified thru US Bank the Cashiers Check is bogus.
It happen to us same people and details. Normally I would check into but my computer was down. I said if it clears in my bank I know it was real. My bank cleared it and after I sent him the money then they came back and said the check was no good. So we had to pay it back. I made out a police report and the sheriff department turned it into GBI. I am leaving it in God's hand my heavenly Father. I know it will be taken care of.
I got this scam today in the mail as well. I feel better about though. you should be insulted by them trying to scam you for $3481, they were going to use me for the upfront price if $4736. I too worry that this scam will attract people that are financially struggling. It just seemed to good to be true to me so I checked into it. my details are different and they seem to vary with each case, mostly with the names, my required contacts were Peter Gilane and Rhonda Orwood and the check was from Aviva, payable through the Bank of Montreal.
Paul Givon sent me a letter too.I deposited the check and the bank closed my account.reported me to checks systems.not able to open another account. One would know the frustuation.
this guy is a rutless, heartless, coldblooded individual.
DOES NOT DESERVES TO BE CALLED HUMAN.(you know what i mean ?)
false informatio
i have been a long time subscriber to the Readers Digest and also subscribe to Our Canada, having recently renewed my new subscription since I apparently had missed renewing it in 2008. I have been provided with a free entry to FAST CASH GIVEAWAY however it seems that the site which is provided www.rd.ca/ssvault- is not a legitimate site. This is a surprise to me that Readers Digest would provide wrongful information and this disturbs me. Can you enlighten me email address is askarchie @gmail.com

Fake Checks
The letter you recieve Will say it's from Readers Digest but it is'nt It is fake.
The Check that comes with it will be written to you for what ever amount mine was for 3, 797.06 it said to be from their insurance company to use for lawyer fees and so forth so you can recieve your actual winnings mine was $255, 069.00. The check company name said it was from HiLite International Broadway, Carrollton Texas (usa) I followed up on the address through the net this is a automotive tech company. Then I called the bank listed on the check whitch said National city Bank Asland Ohio The bank ran the account number on the check it was not there, then they ran the company name and they have a warning on these fake checks it is under investigation. So Please every one check out the check before you deposite it because these scammers are wiping out your accounts and overdrawling your accounts.
Thanks to Complaint Board I did my own Investigation
before I deposited the check The Bank told me to shred the check it is now recycle.

I just got (almost) the same thing in the mail. It is obviously bogus, upon careful reading, but very well-executed in contrast to the more familiar email scams from displaced heiresses, etc. I heartily applaud your diligence in contacting the bank.
The plain white envelope, no return address, mailed in Canada is a good tip-off that this is not from either Atlanta or Dallas. Here's a wonderful irony: the postmark says "Fraud - Prevent it!" (also in french!) That postmark seems to include a canadian postal code--perhaps V6B 1Z1 which is downtown Vancouver near the public library.
Billing for things not ordered
I keep recieving bills for books that I "ordered" from readers digest, according to them I have 4 books for $29.17 EACH. I have not ordered anything from them, Nor have I gotten these books. I have tried calling and be removed from the list, to clear my account. 3 Months ago now is when I started. Im still recieving bills and I guess still ordering books. Yesterdays mail had another book bill in it. Looking for a way to speak to a manager but everytime you ask customer service to speak to one, they hang up. If anyone else tries I wish you the best of luck. Goodbye Reader's Digest! Im done playing! Keep your books!

After receiving and responding to a Readers Digest Sweepsakes e-mail, I received a Readers Digest "Gift" book in US Mail approximately 1 week later. The packaging read "Your Free Gift". This was not requested/ordered from me and I assumed that this was a thank you gift for participating in their sweepstakes. Shortly thereafter, I received a bill from Readers Digest in the amount of $43.15. After inquiring with their Customer Service Dept, I have their permission to return to book providing I pay for shipping costs. Please be leary of anything Readers Digest sends you labled "Free Gift". Don't get taken like I did.

Collection Harassment for book never ordered
I received a book I never ordered. I emailed Reader's Digest about it and never heard back so I donated the book. I have too many books for my book cases as it is. They sent me to their collection dept. and I am being harassed by them to pay for the book. I canceled my magazine subscription as a result and they had the gall to charge me for another year just recently. They charged me for another year in January and my magazine subscription does not expire until February. I never re-subscribed. I have to go to my bank now and tell them that was fraudulent charged. Yet, I am still being harassed for this book I never ordered and had no interest in. It was a book that contained new writers' short stories, to try and get those writers work out there, or something like that. I don't read books like that. I don't read books by any new writer. There are plenty of classics I have yet to read, history I still want to learn about and this piece of junk, in my view, they want $26.90 for. I'm done with Reader's Digest. Further, I never pay what I don't owe. No matter what.

Won't let me cancel subscription
I've repeatedly sent them back their bills with a note saying I don't want their magazine and now I'm getting a " Third Notice" . I do not want this going to a collection agency and they do not provide a telephone number on their bill so I can contact a real human being to get their attention.
THis is bordering on harassment and not the first time I've had this problem with Readers Digest products.
Hope you can assist.
Sincerely,
Heather Donald

Hi there, I also wanted to cancel my subscription, which was easy enough to do via the telephone. Just give them a ring at [protected] and tell them you would like to cancel your subscription. Their number is hard to find but it is available on the magazine website if you have a look for it.
false free draws
Readers Digest over the past 5 years have always sent me documents that I was in the top 3 numbers in our area. What I find funny is Tahsis only has a population of 450 people. I posted a letter on the bulletin board to see how many people subcribed to the magazine. It turns out their are quite a number and they have all received notification that they were also in the top three. Leading people that they may actually be winners. I have taken it one step further and contacted a corporate lawyer who is also a relative. He is compiling quite the file, not just based on Tahsis but also other communities. Its amazing what he has found. Ive been buying readers digest products for years but now realize they are just a scam. Im totally disabled so of course Id love to win. I figure I have a better chance buying B.C.649 Lotto tickets. At least you dont have to buy products and you do stand a chance to win. I ordered the "free trial" from the book club. I didn't like the condensed version of a favorite author in the 1st book and decided to cancel. I sent the book I didn't want back immediately b/c I didn't want any excuse to be billed. Instead, I've been billed ab $30 for the book I returned. There is no direct contact info. Wasn't able to find anything on-line, either. No one responded to my letter...I just keep getting the ugly invoices. I just got cheated out of $30 for a book I don't even have. (At least 2 books would've been worth the $). Others told me it was a scam. I should've listened.

I am writting in regards to a bill my sister received. She is ill and does not have a computer. This notification says she owes $60.13 but she nver received any books or magazines for that amount. We have no problem paying this but she never received any literature from your company. We would have sent it back as she is not able to comprehend. She no longer reads and does not have the knowledge of receiving any other bills from your company. Thank you very much and I would appreciate hearing back from you on this acct. I keep getting unsolicited mail from these guys. I have told them repeatedly via email and phone that I don't want anything from them. They tell you, "oh that's another department" and things of that sort. I used to respect Reader's Digest but not anymore. Don't ever give them your name or email or anything. They're horrific!
