Practice time
I started the class in March and Newport News, my class ended in June. I had weekend classes. I missed a couple afternoons. I tried to do some make up time, which normally would’ve been time on the range, but they sent me to the classroom for the make up time. I’m not able to get the practice time in timely manner. There’s so much time between my practices that I have time to forget. Not all the instructors have the patience or understanding to explain how to correct mistakes. There are frequently not enough trucks or instructors for the amount of students trying to operate them. The Freightliner, and the International trucks, combined with certain trailers, are difficult to operate correctly. Their mirrors are not good. The Volvo so much easier, but it’s difficult to get use of the good trucks frequently. Because the lot is gravel, they have to use ratchet straps to mark the box. The ratchet straps break, and then the lines for the box are all over the place. Hearing the whistle makes me makes it hard to stay calm. I had the parallel parking down, but because each instructor has a different opinion, and they switched instructors, now I’m confused on some of the things I need to do.
Desired outcome: I really need a good trainer, a good truck (with good mirrors), and a lot of consistent practice time, so I can properly and comfortably complete my test. I don’t mind coming to Richmond. I’ll even go to Chesapeake.
CDL training
My wife and I have completed the school that we graduated from shippers choice but we're still waiting to get tested out which is been already another two weeks it's crazy that they say you can get your license to drive a tractor trailer in 20 days and here it's been over 2 weeks after graduating and still haven't got a test day. The whole time we were in...

Everything
This is a horrible school. The equipment is in terrible condition. Some of the instructors are okay. But, a couple are impatient and rude-not cut out to teach anyone how to drive commercial vehicles. There are way too many students enrolled at one time to accommodate the small number of instructors. After a week of class time, students are required to stand...

Refund and Customer Service
So I was told that this CDL training school was a good one. I was completely wrong!, When I went in to talk to the admission guy he was friendly enough and willing to help out. He stated that there would be carpooling when I started. He would connect students up with people in there area to help out with transportation. I call asking about the carpooling and he said they didnt have it at all. LIES! So I had family issues and couldnt attend the school. I withdrew and was willing to take the fee for withdrawing. It has been about 3 months now and I havent seen my refund. I would call and call and the finance guy is never in his office or answering the phone. So I decided to look up this school through the better business bureau. They have a rating of an F! They have 21 complaints and that is only the people who have complained. I do not suggest that anyone goes to this school and if you are looking to get your CDL class A at this school you should look them up and the finance guy, who I found out is the owner as well, there are some really interesting things about him as well.

Don't make the same mistake that I did. I wished I could have done little research before registering for this illegal school.
I went to this school as weekender student for two months which is eight weeks. I went in with my CDL permit a long DOT card so all I expected was to be trained for skills and over the road training. However, that become my wishful thinking. The first 6 weeks all we did was stand in the lot and watched people who failed the test more than 10 get practice. Six weeks which is 56 hours, we only spend behind the wheel 3 hours in total. This is not to mention the conditions of the trucks which are horrible. By presence there are two truck but one of them never works while the other one runs out gas most of the time. If this school is investigated, it will not operational because of all the safety issues. i have seen people with injuries from the metal clutches that if it gets little wet slips off your feet. Luckily I pass my CDL test and it's not because this school was great but I had to pay extra money outside to just sufficient training.
If you are foreign, please to not attend this school because they are racist and don't like foreign people at all.
Shippers Choice is honest to god terrible. Im trying to get out of my monthly payments. If anyone knows how, please let me know. BUM ### Allen, Crackhead Juice, and Poor pitiful Patrick of Newport News are all sorry excuses for trainers. 8 hours a day and in the truck 20 minutes out of a day. How the F@ could anyone learn something that never drove a truck before. Allen acts like if you listen to him TALK for 1 hour you should be able to pass the test. Allen you gets no respect. Ugly ### missing teeth, bum cloths wearing mid life crisis having dork. ALL FACTS NO FICTION. All the trainers are rejects from the trucking world
I went to shippers choice from December 2014 to February 2015 they never brought me the truck to test in the new instructor was a fool and only cared about showing off Jason was my original instructor he got fired but he actually taught you how to drive the new instructor was a stuck up punk and now they are fighting me over the 6000 I owe them for the bull
All above comments were actually helpful. I am debating about which cdl school to attend. I thought shippers choice would be convenient considering the fact that its about 10 min from my home. Now I have a lot to think about
Shippers choice is completely different now. They replaced most of the instructors, and they actually just want to teach. The instructors actually get upset if you do not pass and show that they care now. This business has basically been overhauled apparently in the past six months according to a couple of the instructors. The only problem I had was all the homework, but it make sense why they had us do it. With my experience it is nothing like what you guys have said, the instructors have all kinds of little tricks they teach to help you with backing. I didn't have any problems with the financial part, and any time I asked an instructor about the money students spend the instructors just said they are here to teach and the finances were not their business. Then they directed me to talk to the people in the office for any other questions about it. Now not everyone passes on the first try but by what I see the students that are always late or off doing their own thing have the most trouble. But that's not the instructors fault because we are adults and shouldn't need teacher keeping track of us all the time.
I went to Shipper's Choice back in Oct 2013 to get my Class A license (have had a B since '95), I attended from mid October to 10 January 2014 when I went for my DMV road test (passed on my second try).
It's a 'meh' school, they give you what the law requires but that's pretty much it.
One thing they DON'T mention is NOBODY will hire you unless it's an OTR company (I have 20 years experience driving straight trucks but outside of Shipper's Choice, NO experience driving tractor trailer).
My wife's handicapped and I'm not comfortable leaving her alone for weeks at a time. Also, if you have a felony (like my entrapment felony from 2012, and my ONLY arrest for anything, EVER), very damned few companies will hire felons, unless your felony is more than 5 years old.
Thank you all so much for posting the truth about this sham of a school! I was about to enroll but decided to google a review for this school needless to say I will be looking for other schools. Once again I trully appreciate everyones comments.
Thanks
ATTENTION NEW STUDENTS! AVOID THAT SCAM SCHOOL!
Reasons for not choosing that school!
1. they have 1 truck for 25 students which is 2007 volvo with manual stick shift
2. the school instructors were taught to make u fail on the road test because it brings money to owner
3. third pary that gives u loan for school is controlled by owners himself
4. instructors are just clowns they dont even know how to teach u in a proper way.Actually students teach each other as stated above
5. 75% students fail in thier 1 first trail
All in all i think that The Federal Law Enforcement Officers Association such as FBI should investegate that scam school.
Well to all you complainers. My son went to this school and got a job before he even finished this school. You get out what you put in. If you put in nothing, you get out nothing. They are not going to just hand you your CDL, you have to earn it. Get off your dead hind ends and work for something and stop waiting for handouts.
Wow its funny how people can just blame everyone/everything for the reason they didn't get there CDL! First off I wanna say if you look hard enough you will find complaints on just about any business because that's just the way it is! Also I wanna say that trucking isn't for just anyone so if you attend and for some reason didn't get what you came for it was probably because you were the idiot who just sat there in class watching YouTube or something when you should have been outside practicing or talking to one of the instructors to better understand why your having such a hard time! I was a Veteran and went there and got exactly what I came for and it makes me sick to see all these complaints on why people didn't get there CDL or there money back. If you weren't so ignorant you would see clearly in the papers that you sign(before you pay!) That the refund policy is actually quite fair. If you attended school for a week then you pay for a week, what because you realized trucking wasn't for you, you think you can just say " I want all my money back or "its not fair I'm getting charged"? People are ignorant to think like that. A College is the actually worse but most of the people above complaining wouldn't know that because they know nothing about education. If you put money down for college and quit you owe ALL of the tuition. Shippers Choice only charges for the time you attend unless you complete more the half the class. I think that's fair, more than fair. All my instructors were cool and taught me a lot. I still use the things they taught me to this day. Also the guy "Charlie" everyone's talking about has passed away and his son actually took over and purchased a lot of newer trucks that are way nicer than any competitors in the area! Also department of education recognizes them along with VA services! All I can say is I went to check out other schools and shippers choice is by far the better choice! There's 3 of them and they've been in business for over 20 yes! Hope this review helps and remember it doesn't matter where you go to school for a CDL you have to Learn how to drive a truck!
