Monday, 11/20/08 I picked up my refill for Zolpidem Tartrate, 10 MG Tabtev (Generic brand for Ambien). When I checked the container later in the evening I found, not the small white pill I usually get but a larger purple pill with MZ2 stamped on it. The pill I usually get is a round shaped white tablet imprinted with 93 on the front and 74 on the back. The label on the refill was identical to the other container. Same description, same brand, and MG. It was too late to call the pharmacy that night so I called CVS Tues morning around 9:00 AM and spoke to the Pharmacy supervisor, Ms Teresita. I explained that I was given the wrong medication and she informed me that the medication was correct but that they had run out of the brand I usually get and gave me a new brand, same potency but larger and a different color. She asked me at the time of pickup was I informed of the change and was there a green label attached to the refill. Neither had happened. She apologized to me for the mistake? and assured me that I do have the right medication.
I informed her that I was still reporting this error and my confidence in CVS was badly shaken. I did learn a valuable lesson. Don't trust the pharmacist who fills your prescription, check to see if all is correct even if the label information is identical to the old container. I hope that whoever filled my prescription is severly reprimanded for their error because this incident could have been alot worse if they had given me the wrong medication. Wrong information is just as serious as wrong medication.
CVS, you have lost my trust and possibly my business for I have 5 precriptions filled at the Glenoaks branch. Your staff leaves alot to be desired.

The "same" medicine from different manufacturers is NOT the same. The active ingredients are the same, but the inactive ingredients are not. My pharmacy (Costco) changed from the white pill to the purple pill (MZ2) and I was up all night for the first time in years. The purple pill obviously has something stimulating in it (at least for me). No doubt, I will have to change pharmacies to get the small white pill that I am familiar with and that works so well for me.
I want everyone to know I'm not a pharmacist. I do take Ambien or Zolpidem and have been taking it since I started getting chemotherapy. I don't know why I can't sleep but I do get a number of different prescriptions of Zolpidem. I assume it has something to do with what's available generically and cost wise to the pharmacy. I believe I've received 2 or 3 different types of Ambien and they all work exactly the same. This has been 9 months for me. I pray for the day I can get back to sleep without taking meds for sleep. It has a tremendous effect on my memory and I hope it's not addicting. I would concur with the pharmacists when they say it's the same thing in a different package. As far as the shot on Walmart I know where your coming from because you're a pharmacy. They are crazy cheap, this is what they do to communities and businesses, but this is America and they have as much right to sell pharmaceuticals as CVS. The fact that you insinuate that the Pharmacists at Walmart are incompetent is ludicrous. They have much more to lose than CVS by hiring an incompetent pharmacy. While I'm on this rant, I've seen CVS selling non pharmaceutical products, (Beer, Wine, Alcohol) at cost which killed me when I was in that business competing with them but I dealt with it. As a couple of you have so eloquently stated "get over it"
Simple explanation about yours schutzme...Walmart does NOT specialize in pharmacy...its a DISCOUNT store. CVS is a pharmacy and only a pharmacy. If you want quick service from a discount store, go to Walmart. If you want real pharmacy service, go to CVS.
Just got a refill for Zolpidem 10 mg @ CVS. Gave them the same discount cards as I've given Walmart.CVS charged $39.83. Walmart was $7.43. Big difference! Since I had transferred it once I would have had to go back to Dr. since it's a controlled substance.Not happy, should have done my research;( CVS is way overpriced! BOOOO
There IS NOT ERROR. Doctor prescribed Zolpidem10 mg, you got Zolpidem 10 mg. END OF STORY. Its only a courtesy to tell you if a generic was changed, but NOT mandatory. Like it has been said, "get over it".
I take zolpidem tartrate 10mg also. I have white round pills but, have two different inprints on my pills some have 74 on one side and 93 on the other side. the other pills in the same bottle suppose to be zolpidem also has inprint of teva on one side and 74 on the other side. the thing is I can't sleep with the 74/93 one but I can sleep with the 74/teva one. I call the phamcey CVS and told them this but they assured me that it was the same medication and same potency.
We change generic manufacturers all the time based on which manufacturer will get us a bigger profit margin. Get over it.
The Technician nor the Pharmacist should be in trouble. Let me tell you how we check to make sure it is the right medication: we check the NDC number on the bottle to match it with the one on the printed label. We then have to scan both the label and bottle of medication. And also, since your medication is a controlled substance, we also have to double count it. The pharmacist then scans the label and opens up the bottle and checks the pills to make sure they match the same description as the one on the screen. We don't always think, Oh Mrs Gloria is only used to getting this size and shape and color pill. We don't because we process 400 + prescriptions daily! Why should the person who filled it get into trouble? Its not like he or she was personally trying to kill you for crying out loud.
Its just like a COKE bottle... they change shapes and colors... GET OVER IT! we have a system that maybe 1 out of every 500 patients may get the wrong medication, but very unlikely. PLEASE... YOU MAKE A MOLE-HILL into a MOUNTAIN...
Did you check the new prescription bottle to see what it said about what the pill should look like? We change manufacturers all the time on generic medications. Sometimes the usual one is unavailable so we order the other one. Some of the manufacturers send us 100 count bottles, and some send us 500 count bottles. It saves us space by using the ones with bigger counts. Some manufacturers are more expensive than others.
Regardless, we can change the manufacturer as we like, and we don't have to tell you about it. It's your responsibility to read the prescription bottle before you take your medications to see if the description of the pill on the outside of the bottle is the same as the pill.
