Please do not entrust the care of your pet to Petco grooming!
I had taken my Papillon named Winnie to Petco in Seekonk, MA to be groomed. Our usual groomer was not available so the appointment was booked with another Petco groomer.
My dog seemed extremely distressed at pick-up time; she was crying and squirming while being handed over the counter into my arms. When I asked the groomer “Katie” what was wrong with my little dog? She replied: “Winnie is such a Drama Queen!”
After leaving the store and arriving home I discovered that Winnie was in such pain that she was unable to move. I examined her more closely and noticed an enormous bruise covering almost the entire left side of her tiny body!
Since being groomed at Petco Winnie has had to undergo four surgeries. Her blackened skin had become necrotic and a large portion of her left side had to be removed. The veterinary surgeons believe that Winnie’s injury was the result of a thermal burn.
Winnie’s pain has only just started to subside and she will forever live with her scares. As for me; I will continue to deal with the guilt for trusting Petco with my precious little companion.
The complaint has been investigated and resolved to the customer’s satisfaction.

Unbelievable story. Our beloved 18 month old pure bred Australian Sheppard was brought into Petco for grooming by my wife. When my wife went to pick up our dog, her eye looked was red and swollen. By the time she got home, the eye was completely closed. She returned to the store to ask what Associate Christine C had done to her eye, and we were told that the shampoo had gone directly into her eye. Why hadn't they at least warned my wife? My wife then took our dog to the emergency room vet that day, where she had to be sedated due to pain and an inability to open the eye. She was put on antibiotics. Then, this weekend the dog continued to suffer from what must have been a burn in her eye, so we took her to our regular vet. The eye was completely opaque. Impossible to have been shampoo that did this. The vet said she had never seen such a bad corneal burn, of the entire eye. They operated on our dog this morning, trying to save the eye. My kids have been crying knowing that today our beloved dog got her eye sutured shut in order to save the eye, all because of someone who obviously did not care. I am very upset. If anyone has any advice, please write me at medicaldevicesale AT yahoo.com. If you are also pissed after reading this, please boycott their stores. If you are really really pissed, call the store. They have been nothing but rude to us, and even refused to return my wife's payment, stating that they had provide a service. Yeah, what a service indeed. Notice the left eye of our dog which was burned so badly that the light reflects differently. I am sick to my stomach just writing this and seeing the photo.
My dog was injured while being groomed. her hip was broken but they claim that they didn't do anything. I took her to my vet and they confirmed her hip was broken and that it takes a trauma to cause that kind of damage like a fall. They said usually only see with animals hit by cars. They still claim nothing happened.
Had $3, 000 worth of surgery and still fighting 4.5 months later with them to pay the bil. At this time they turned it over to a 3rd party SMS to research my claim. They have transferred my claim and still haven't even done any research or solicited the medical records. Petco self insures and clearly pays this firm to stall claims so customers dont sue.
I was on vacation from the UK in Sioux falls and visited the Petco store there..I have never seen such neglected looking animals in a store in my life. I do not agree with stores selling any animals even in the UK but if our pet stores were to treat animals like petco stores do the would be a civil uprising in this country as we would not stand for it. Petco and petsmart are the main reasons puppy mills are such big buisness as that is where they obtain all the livestock from. They dont care about the health of the stock they are selling to the public or that the inbreeding problems cause untold misery not only to the animals involved but to the people that purchase them.. While the public still goes into the petco store and quite happily hands over money for any purchase..it doesent have to be an animal...then Petco is laughing itself all the way to the bank. Well lisaj109..im so sorry to what happened to your dog..its unforgivable but i think if it had happened to any of my animals i would of ...and this is a brit phrase...punched the girls lights out who did this to my dog. Hope you sued them . Anyone that would like to join in an ongoing debate i have with petco on Facebook is more than welcome. Just go to this link and you will see my posts under the heading Petco staff need training.http://www.facebook.com/PETCO
OMG your poor little dog! I am a salon manager at a PetCo. When I first started working at this store 2 years ago, they had one of those closed drying boxes. I was told a groomer had killed a cat in there a few years prior. I was horrified! I knew already how dangerous they are and I refused to allow anyone to use that box. When the door broke, I ripped it off so there could be no mistake when I was off work.
I feel so bad for your dog. Grooming should be made to be a fun experience for them and if not fun, at the least, safe and tolerable. I would sue them!
JPage, I agree with you about the small animal sales. I wish there was enough pressure to make PetCo and PetSmart stop selling these sad little creatures. It's as bad as puppy mills and both corps encourage adoptions and claim to be so humane but supporting that horrible small pet industry is totally hypocritical!
Peta had a huge reports about rabbits abused at another Petco. Sickening. I reported this petco to Peta and maybe this will put more pressure on petco to treat animals right.
Honestly I think it wasn't the groomer's fault. It was an accident. Accident's happen always. Get it right! Again dogs get stressed out while grooming.
