Hello,
I was at the Food Lion at 104 Highway 54 today in Carrboro and felt I was the victim of racism by the cashier. I am a white man and when I walked to the checkout the young girl, who is black, was gabbing it up with one of her friends, also an employee. When I started putting my groceries online I said hello as I always do but got only an ugly look by this young kid. She never said a word to me, not one. And usually when groceries are rung up, clerks normally say the amount even if we can see it. She said not a word, and I looked at what was owed and inserted my card. When the receipt was printed, she very reluctantly handed it to me.
This upset me to no end as I have never and I mean never been treated like this before, especially in a grocery store. I went straight to the manager of the store and told him the same thing I am writing here. All except the racist comment, which I totally believe was the reason why this young girl was rude. Not just rude, but almost like she hated me from the moment she saw me. I should have left everything there and just went to the manager when she didn't tell me the amount. I could have let her know how I felt about her attitude and let her know that I was prejudiced against. This incident is very disturbing to me and I may ask for some compensation by Food Lion for her utterly rude, ugly behavior. She doesn't know me, nor have we ever laid eyes on each other, and may never again. This child should be fired from her position and taught some customer service if she ever decides to go back to work in a reputable store such as Food Lion. Lucky for me, there is Harris Teeter and Publix.
