I've been shopping at Kohl's stores now for many years in all the states I've lived in. My experience on October 14, 2021 at this particular Kohl's store located at 5241 McFarland Rd, Durham, NC was quite strange. I posted a complaint at www.kohlsfeedback.com a few days later. I am still not sure what happened to that complaint.
I went to the store looking for a few items including an electric toothbrush and wireless earbuds. The earbuds in the electronics section of the store were locked behind a glass window. I notified a passing by store associate that I wanted to get one of the earbuds behind the locked glass window. He called another store associate for assistance.
Shortly thereafter, a store associate showed up with the keys, opened the window and picked up the $39.99 earbuds I wanted to buy. But she would not hand me the earbuds. She asked me to head straight to checkout and pay for the earbuds. I explained to her that I was not done shopping and that I needed to pick up a few more items before I head to checkout. She then told me she would take them to checkout herself and the earbuds would be waiting for me there when I'm ready to checkout. I asked her if she thought I was going to steal the earbuds because I am Black. She responded that it was the store policy, even though the policy was not posted anywhere near the electronic items. In any way, she would not hand me the earbuds. I found this strange because in the past I have bought many electronics from Kohl's stores and was never subjected to this strange treatment. In my previous experiences, the store associate would unlock the window and hand me the item I am interested in. And I would then keep on shopping and head to check out whenever I was ready.
This was an upsetting and frustrating experience. If this is indeed a policy specific to this particular store, why then isn't it posted next to the electronics items so customers know what to expect next when they want to buy a merchandise that falls under the policy? I believe that the store associate was guided by her own personal bias in her interaction with me.

I know this is an old complaint but.. I hope they notify you when a reply is made. Please don't continue to believe this is a racial biased thing.. It's happening more & more in many stores. It happened to me in Walmart over guess what? Dog flea medication! I am serious and it was only $29.99. I have a Walmart credit card and had a cart full of groceries, probably $200 or more when the associate got the flea meds out and said she would have to walk them up to the front check stands. I was livid and said; "I don't need it that bad, you can keep it and in fact; keep this entire cart full of stuff." I walked out.. I can't tell you how furious I was..
Looking back on it, I overreacted.. I was insulted and angry but... I don't believe she profiled me as a thief and I don't believe your store believed you were a thief either.. But there are FAR TOO MANY thieves out there now costing us all money. We pay for those losses with higher prices. The stores have little they can do to combat it, this is one of the only things they can do.
Just know that it isn't about race.. It happens to all of us and it will continue to happen until we get the shoplifting under control.
Many Blessings.. Pika
I believe you gave money to BLM, and got ripped off by them based on your attitude. Or maybe you are from CA, where it is legal to steal less than $1000 from a store.
The policy you experienced is getting more standard in retail, even see pay first at gas pumps. This is because theft is becoming rampant. In the end the cost gets passed on to consumers. So before think it is a black issue, think of as a cost savings to you and everyone else. Not trying to put you or anyone else down, just educate. I don't think the shareholders of Kohls cares where their money comes from, as long as it is green
Have great day.
