My mum takes Tramadol for severe pain from colectomy and is staunchly counterincated to take ANY NSAIDS for any reason. The pharmacy and insurance fought her on filling the tramadol trying to force her to try Celebrex and other NSAID drugs which would cause a bleed in the GI tract...She had been filling her medications as 1941 southern Blvd Rio rancho New Mexico 87124.
The pharmacy team was very judgemental and never filled the prescribed amount of the tramadol- she ended up with 19 and 9 and 6 sometimes without any cohesive explanation. No matter how my mum and I counted it- there were tablets which simply evaporated from the number dispensed!
Finally, we worked it out to obtain all thirty at once for her - but in November and December of 2023- she was filled tablets which did not match the description on the bottle- these pills had a score mark on the blank side- the others did not. After a couple of days- my mother and I noticed that she was vomiting and has cold hands and feet as well as coughing. She complained that it did NOT help her pain at all!
I started looking into these tablets and checked with a half a dozen different drug identification wizards and there was NO MEDICATION that came up with the manufacturer imprints I provided. I was certain that they were a Beta Blocker due to my mother's reaction- the cold sweaty hands and feet and cough was something that came as am adverse event from the blood pressure drugs-- even if they were not beta blockers- it was not what we were advertised.
I brought the tablets to the pharmacy and confronted them with samples of both drugs. I was told that I don't know what I am talking about and that it is tramadol- citing the store pill ID wizard- they showed me that the pill with the score on one side is the same it just has a line through the middle...that's part of the manufacture imprint and it would be indicated. Both pharmacists I spoke with tried to insist I am just inept and were condescending about my prior medical education- I am very familiar with pharmacology and I don't appreciate having some nitwit roll their eyes and smirk disdainfully at me as if I am some sort of drug seeker/addict due to the nature of the medication prescribed.
Walgreens has previously refused to fill my legal, legitimate prescription for a controlled substance because she claimed that I didn't need them and I was going to use them illicitly. It took until I spoke to the pharmacist who knows me and she conceded to fill the medication while chronically apologizing. For the record: the prescription was for THREE 5mg diazepam tablets for seizure rescue PRN. I had not filled a prescription for any benzodiazapanes at ANY pharmacy for over a year. She easily could have seen that in the registry- but she inflicted her bias on me and maliciously denied me out of self-righteous disdain. Discrimination is still discrimination and it's not the pharmacist duty to be the morality police.
Note: the single pill bottle photo was from the last month of legitimate medication.
Claimed loss: Dignity. Functionality. 60 50mg Tramadol tablets- which were fake.
Desired outcome: Replace the fake medication. Issue a one-time respite of 60 brand-name tablets to retroactively compensate for the Dummy tablets.
