I took my cosmetology state board exam on September 14th in San Antonio Texas.. Because I had a great experience in cosmetology school, maintained a 4.0 G.P. A throughout school, and aced my written exam, I was nervous but calm and confident. There were two proctors. One was okay but the older one raised her voice at us as soon as we walked though the door. You see, school prepared us for the seriousness of the exam, but they never said it would be a bad experience or the proctor should treat us in a mean or bad manner. The testing site was dusty, messy, and cluttered but I put it out of my mind. I notice the proctor seemed very occupied with me alot of the exam. She would stand over me for minutes at a time making notes with each movement. Then she would walk away for a short while slightly acknowledging the others, but make her way back to me and literally just hover to watch every single move I made. Once again I thought nothing of it because I knew what I was doing and knew the material and was completely prepared. While the exam was taking place, she left and went to the bathroom at least 4 times and without telling the other proctor which left us completing the test, but unsupervised as we did so. By the end of the exam she no longer would wait for us to finish the section she just begin to Yell out "ALREADY GOT YOU NUMBER 3", "I ALREADY HAVE YOUR SCORE NUMBER 5". It made me feel rushed but also like I did something wrong by finishing after other people finished. I'll add I never went over my time, but It defintely felt rushed. Fast forward I keep a calm head finish the test and we're instructed to wait outside to receive our scores... and I made a 62%. I was DEVASTATED. How could this be? I was a straight A student, I never made below an 80 on my mock practicals at school and I didn't miss a beat on the real thing? How could I fail so terribly? I didn't fail ONE thing in school, I was in student council! I looked over my score sheet and that's when suspicion set in, I scored 12 out 15 for haircutting service (one of the hardest portions on the test) but got 2 out of 7 on relaxer retouch (one of the easiest) furthermore I SPECIFICALLY remember during the relaxer retouch the proctor disappeared to the bathroom. So how was she so sure I failed that service? Also the scores that seemed higher on my score sheet, about every other section or so, were scored by the other proctor because every so often they would switch and watch each other's testing groups, but only after each 3rd or 4th section. I was there in a group of 10 all Caucasian and I was the only person of color. That's why I believed I was watched the whole time and ultimately failed. This has caused immense distress. I'm working in a warehouse and doing door dash because all the testing sites are filled up for weeks and I can't obtain my license and work in a salon until this test is passed. I lost a salon job that was waiting for me to pass my test, they were deterred from hiring me because I failed. My student loans have just kicked, in I went to school for a year and half and did very well may I add, paid $20, 000 for tuition, paid PSI to take and exam just to not be able to practice my passion/craft because one person who's credentials whom I'm unsure about deemed me unready to enter the work force in my field. Are the cosmetologist test proctors even cosmetologists? Because a true cosmetologist would have known I didn't make any major flaws during my test and actually performed well. The teachers at my school were shocked to hear I had failed. I was a top student in my class and I went to a well known and prestigious Cos. School. It was a major embarrassment. I plan to seek legal council here in the near future regarding the potential for discriminatory practices throughout the PSI testing model and also to help me discover if the proctors that are grading the practical exams are even licensed in the field the are subjectively judging others in. My test ID is 1855437.
Desired outcome: Retest with a non biased proctor. I want my money back from the last exam because it wasn't the experience psi promised. My written test was completely different it was smooth and professional.
