I keep getting phone calls from them, telling me I can't cancel and if I don't pay they will send it to collections! I explained to them I am not working and have to feed my children. They said I owe them 825.00.For magazines, are you kidding me? They said I committed myself to five years! Well they kept calling me and calling me, and each time I thought it was to confirm my order,so maybe I wasn't paying close attention to what was being said. There has to be a way out of this mess!

Can someone please help me?

When I agreed to start this subscription I honestly didn't understand what i was getting myself into first off I didn't relize that the payment would be so high for a magiazine subscription. But that was my fault for not listening to them. So to all of you who are having trouble with this company you need to realize that you got suckered because they knew how to word it just right so if someone isn't really paying attention they can sucker you into paying more then you really should be. The only thing I can say is if you talk to them you can get them to lower the monthly payments so you arn't doing so much for each month. When I started out I was paying $50 a month. well i got them to lower it to about $30 dollars a month. I was however not recieving all of the magazines that i had ordered but they called me not that long ago and told me that they realized they weren't sending all of them and apologiesed and said that they would start sending all of them. The thing that does get me about these people is I just set up a landline connection a week ago and they have already started calling it. Since i really dont want to talk to these people thank god i got caller ID along with it too! so i wish the best to everyone and hope you can if anything lower your payments. if you find out how to get out of it please let me know.

I totally agree with all the comments above. I, too, lost my job. It's like they have you by the b#@lls. These are the most difficult people I have ever dealt with. I have filed a complaint with the BBB. DON'T EVER GET SUCKED IN BY THESE LEACHES.

I agree to! My husband did something online and he didnt know what he was getting into! They kept calling and calling and then he finally gave in and we started to pay them. But now my husband is deployed until jan and i have a 5 month old baby and I tryed to cancel them but they told me the same thing! I really need to try to get out of this garbage cause i really dont have the money for it and I need money to feed my baby girl. If anyones knows a way or finds a way out please let me know!

My wife ordered with viking as well. I told them we're not paying them, but my wife paid anyways. I don't know how much, $800 or something. She's on deployment in the Navy and now they're calling up and saying we only have a year and a half left, even though we paid for 5 years. They won't give us a refund! Way to support the troops! I'm sick of their calls. I don't even think she has recieved a magazine from them.

To add to my previous comment. Before paying them the full 5 year payments, we had paid for a few months, then I told them I wasn't going to pay, and cancelled my credit card. After disputing with them, THEY TOLD ME THEY WOULD GIVE US A REFUND, SO I GAVE THEM A NEW CARD NUMBER. After giving them my number they said they couldn't refund the money. AT NO POINT DID I TELL THEM THEY COULD TAKE ANY MONEY OUT OF MY ACCOUNT. The next day I had a payment pending on my account. THEY STRAIGHT UP TRIED STEALING MONEY OUT OF MY BANK ACCOUNT, WITHOUT MY AUTHORIZATION. I cancelled the card the same day. Then a couple weeks later my wife for some reason paid the $800 dollars.

I AM GOING THROUGH THE EXACT SAME ISSUE WITH VIKING MAGAZINE AND I AM COMPLAINING TO THE BETTER BUSINESS BUREAU. BUT THEY HAVE TO BE STOPPED BECAUSE THIS IS OUTRAGIOUS HOW THEY TRY TO STRONG-ARM YOU INTO GETTING MAGAZINES AND NOT ALLOWING YOU TO CANCEL. THIS IS TOTAL ###!

**I worked there for one day** They have callers in Bloomington Minnesota and also Fridley. I started at the Fridley call center and soon realised that they were ripping people off and I never came back.
I never got paid for that day either!
It is crazy to pay that much money for magazines and NO...you cannot cancel. I think if you cancel the card you are using and have a new one reissued it should stop them from stealing your money...call your bank.

Oh, and here is how it works. There is a huge room of callers and if the person does not have a bank account of credit card number you are to tell them that the 'program' is not for them. You are not to mention the price but once and it is all script read. Seriously, most of the kids working there were high and ... it was a crazy environment. They also steal from the workers, I actually sold 2 subscriptions, but they make the manager there finalise it...he said they didn't want them. I called the people back since I jotted the phone numbers down and sure enough they both said they gave their credit card info to my manager.
I decided not to return because I couldn't stomach the fact they are ripping people off or magazine (which you should subscribe to from the magazine themselves). Please beware of Viking Magazine!

I am currently in a dispute with Viking ... They caught me one morning upon waking up after I had only had my phone turned on for 24 hours. They said that they got my number from the phone company. I didn't go with an unlisted number and hadn't put in for Do Not Call list yet so I didn't think much about it. I let them play their speil and the price sounded right in the beginning. I am a single mother of 3 small kids and by the 3rd phone call the kids were running around screaming and I was trying to cook breakfast. Of course like everyone else has stated... the price did go up. I think I paid them the first $30 and then my finances went down hill. I started recieving magazines almost immediately. NOT ONE of them were anything that I would have even thought about reading. For 2 months I never recieved what I had actually ordered. I refused to send them anymore money and flat out told them so. I told them they could give them away to someone else cause I wasn't paying the bill. I finally moved 2 months ago and somehow they got ahold of my prepaid cell number...?... I had a small discusion with them that resulted in them hanging up on me and then calling me back and telling me that there was a mistake on my account and that they were going to refund my money to me. Hence, asking me for more personal info. I had refused to give them my new address and told them that I hope the new tenants at the residence enjoyed the massive amounts of magazines because I did not want them. And I also told them that I refuse to give out anymore personal info and that they could keep the $30 as a gift for their hard efforts. They then had me put on hold and went and got a supervisor or someone else and they told me that apparently there actually wasn't a mistake and that I was still held liable for my obligation of payment. She proceeded to play the recording of the final phone call when the order was placed... I hung up half way thru cause it was eating my minutes. I then proceeded to call them back and the woman was pisssssssed... she proceeded to get extremely irate with me wondering why i hung up on the recording and I told her she was eating my minutes and that I know what was said. And that I still refused the service cause I was not going to pay for something because I had not received anything that I was suppose to be paying for. (I probably made 2 payments with them... I don't remember). They have now supposedly given it over to a collector. The collectors call about 3 times a day and I have fun tormenting them. I even got loud into the phone cause they called at 9:30 at night. I just picked it up and said " You do realize it is illegal for you to call me after 9pm, maybe you'll have a better chance tomorrow!" They hung up directly without saying anything. The next day I told the collector that if the company had done a credit check on me before making me a loan for a bunch of magazines then they never would have got themselves into the position. My credit score is extremely bad from a past marriage and the divorce and I don't have funds to fix it while trying to feed and house my children along with sitters just so I can go to work. I do think that for these types of companies (just as the banks have to do) they should be required to have a hand signature on a document that lists everything about YOUR OBLIGATIONS to them so there is no misunderstanding. Especially with the amount they are charging! I still refuse to pay them and I'm basically waiting to see how far they will go... There has been no activity on my credit reports from them and thanks to this post ... I now have more ammo to mess with them with... Yes I am that bored sometimes...lol I wish everyone luck in whichever way they are dealing with these guys... I should have known better and I did know better and I still fell into it... Another hard lesson learned the hard way :D

I will be getting with an attorney in the coming week to start a class action lawsuit against this company. They are breaking the law. I will post a link to the website here once it is up and running for people to join the lawsuit.

This place needs to be and WILL be shut down.

My husband just got a call from these people, and thought it sounded good. So, he agreed. The guy then said that a supervisor would be calling him, in a few minutes to ask him if he was satisfied. So, while my husband was waiting for this supervisor to call we decided to look at the website. After we saw the website had no information on it at all we decided to look up reviews. Then we found this website. When the supervisor finally called back we told her we were not interested anymore. She asked why and he told her why. Then she proceeded to say that the order was already complete and that there was nothing she can do, and that we would have to pay. Then she proceeded to say that he also agreed to a 60 month commitment. My husband said they never mentioned anything about a 60 month commitment. These people are nothing but big scammers. Luckily they didn't ask for any credit or checking account number. We will also be contacting a lawyer about this tomorrow.

I just got a call tonight from this service. I have had my home phone hooked up for a whopping 4 days so the only people that have the number are my landlord, my mother-in-law, and the phone company. Surely the first two didn't sell my name, so it had to be the phone company. That is another issue altogether but as a former phone rep, I want to remind everyone to do what I forgot and clearly state any time to start a new service (phone, internet, whatever) that you do not want your information shared.
Anyway, the woman called at 8:50 at night. She mispronounced my last name 4 times and then tried to give me a pitch about how she just wants to let me know that I'll be receiving these magazines for six months. I didn't listen to the rest of the pitch. I told her not to send anything, that I wasn't interested, and I hung up. As the phone was going down, I heard her try to save the sale by saying "No, no ma'am" but that's all I heard before the phone went click. Since I was so clear in my refusal, this had BETTER be the end of the calls. I will be instructing my family not to answer anything from this company in the future.
My point is, what this woman said and what "Hank" claims is said are completely different. This woman made it sound like she was just going to have six months of magazines sent to me, end of story. I'm sure if I had stayed on the phone, I would have had her asking for my credit card number and all sorts of things. Not happening!
But it only goes to show that this company IS misleading people and playing on them to try to trick them into paying money. Never, ever give out financial info over the phone and when someone like this calls, just hang up after you tell them no. There is no such thing as free in this life, especially from telemarketers.

I ordered the magazines from Viking (country living, country homes, Victorian Homes, Everyday with Rachel Ray) and I have not received these magazines (except for Everyday with Rachel Ray). I have been paying for these magazines for months. I have been receiving obscure magazines that I have never heard of before.

I called and said that I was cancelling my subscriptions to these magazines and the customer service rep. (Jason) screamed at me that he was going to turn this over to a collections agency. He told me that I could not get out of this for any reason.

I finally got a call from someone else at Viking, who has had some training in public relations, and she told me that she will take care of it and I will be getting the magazines that I ordered. I thanked her and I put the rest of the payments on my credit card.

Today, a male from Viking called and with a very broad Minnesota accent (so broad it was really like someone making a joke of the accent) asked me if I was happy with my dealing with Viking. He also asked me if I would name off the magazines, once again, that I wanted. I hung up on him, because I could tell it was a joke. He called back and asked what magazines I wanted. He told me that I could not hang up on him!

This is so rediculous. Don't these people who work for Viking have anything better to do than to make crank phone calls?

I would say that this is a very unprofessional group of people who work for Viking. I willl NEVER order magazines from Viking again!

They are so unprofesssional. There is a woman in "collections" names Christy, who keeps calling and teleSTALKING me. I told them I did not want their service, I told them I never agreed to pay 5 years worth of magazines that they cannot be certain will even be in print in 5 years. They yell, can't pronounce their words, have horrible grammar and keep calling both my phones number, of which I did NOT give them. I told them they should use their time to sell and call people that WANT their service NOT people that DON"T want it...they are completely nuts, like who would work for such a scammy company. They even called me today, wanted to know my new credit card number, so that they could issues me a refund, IN THE EVENT, that they may have made a mistake! Like I am going to give them my credit card number? They are complete idiots and I have filed a Consumer Protection Complaint against these nutcases...i cannot believe they are in business...They call both my phones all day long...why aren't they calling people who want their service? Highschool dropouts who can't get a better job would only work for such a scammy company...please google consumer protection in your state and file a complaint or call the Minnesota Better Business Bureau and the Police Department in their city...they are completely unprofessional and a scam.

Im glad I came across this site. I too just had my phone hooked up about 5 days ago, and today I got a call from them, I didnt speak to them they left no message, I seen their name on the caller ID. Seeing it was a magazine and I write an automotive related column for an on-line paper I thought someone seen my writings and wanted to talk to me, so I Googled their name seen their page and knew right away they wanted to sell me some thing.
Next time they call I'll know not to pick up! Thanks for the heads up.

Scammers scammers scammers. I was lured into signing up for this service by a promise of a free laptop as a gift for signing up. Guess what? Come to find out "I don't qualify" for some reason or another. I specifically asked multiple times if I qualified, and that I didn't need to take any more steps to get my free laptop. The sales rep lied. Plain and simple. Also, after half an hour on the phone with the Viking sales reps and managers, I'm told for being so patient I'll get money knocked off my monthly subscription. YAY right?! Nope... they still charged me the $59 whatever. So once I find out I'm not getting the laptop I call and tell them to cancel. I was billed only 9 days ago. They take 4 days to call me back, and proceed to tell me I can't cancel, I made a commitment. I say, well I changed my mind, and haven't gotten any magazines yet. After telling this guy for an hour or whatever that I don't WANT magazines I wanted the free laptop I was tricked into believing I was getting, he finally says well I can see we won't be changing your mind. You've already been billed for your first cycle blah blah blah so if you'd like instead of continuing your service I can switch it to your one magazine for 2 years. You've already paid. So I said fine screw it and HOPEFULLY will only be getting that one payment taken out. I still feel screwed and don't want the magazine... I may try calling back tomorrow and telling them I want my money back, don't want their stupid magazine, and if they give me any ### I'll report them. Think it'll work? Probably not worth my time. $60 gone... oh well as long as they don't call me anymore, or take any more of my money. Will be problems. Someone please get these ### shut down.

I am very angry at this company! They talk really fast and don't give you a chance to ask questions... I NEVER received anything saying I could cancel and every time I try to cancel, they say I can't. I am filing a complaint with the BBB, cancelled my credit card and mailed them a letter telling them to stop sending me magazines and stop sending me bills, or I will take them to court. I obviously didn't sign up for this... they are sending me Parenting, Men's Health and Vegetarian magazines... I am not a parent, a man or a vegetarian... go figure... that is one of the many reasons why I know this company is a scam. Also, they kept saying it was a contract... the last time I checked, contracts have to be in writing and be signed by me... none of this happened. This company needs to be closed down and stop trying to scam people!

We spoke to them and they refused to let my son out of what they called a contract when in fact they had NO SIGNATURE for this account, but they continue to take the funds out of his checking account. What a rip off for many people trying to make a living and not being able to have the right to cancel something that is keeping them broke! Screw you Viking magazine subscription service!

Used to work for them. The majority of the employees are a bunch of scam artists, criminals and junkies, which is why I no longer work with them. No desire to be associated with that.
By law, however, they are allowed to call up to 9:00 p.m. in every time zone.
The best thing to do is tell them to put your number on their do not call list, and their main website actually has a tab for you to click on for just that.
Do NOT ever give them your credit/debit/checking account number, and you will never be charged, nor put into collections, despite what they say.

We are also involved with this company for over $800.00 for magazines we never ordered. My husband cancelled the credit card that they used to charge us for these magazines. they are are calling and sending us bills or want another credit card number. I have filed complaints with the BBB in Minnesota and our home state, filed complaints with the State Attorneys General in MN and our home state. We also complained to the National Do Not Call Registery because our numbers are on that list and the Federal Consumer Protection Agency. All of you guys who have complaints have to do the same things. These agencies have been established to protect comsumers from these unscrupulous people. Please file complaints because nothing will be resolved if these agencies don't know they are doing this to people. If they continue to harrass us with magazines and phone call we will take legal action. I would rather fight these people and give the money to an attorney than to give them $800.00 for something we never ordered. Just an FYI, they also do business as (DBA) Viking Magazine Service, VMS, Blue Whale Production and Great American Reader all in MN except for Blue Whale-comes out of FL.

Dear Sir/Madam:

Just like you, I have also been scammed by Great American Readers. It is truly the biggest nightmare. I am still dealing with their harassing calls every day. Mind you, they are calling me every single day around 8:30AM, and multiple times from different numbers during the day.

Anyway, I think the best way for you to do is to:

--- File a report to the BBB both in MN and your home state.
---- Contact BOTH attorney generals from MN and your home state.
---- Close the debit card that you used to make a transaction with them.
----File a compaint with the FTC, make sure you save your complaint reference number
----don't pick up their calls until you have heard from FTC, BBB or your attorney generals.
----If they threaten you with legal actions, or if they say that they will take you to court... don't be afraid because if somebody's going to be taken to court, that would be "THEM" and not "YOU"
--- contact the three credit departments and tell them about the fraud that the magazine posted
--- I doubt that their "collection agency" is a legitimate one, because there are way too many victims of this scam.

Hope this helps.

Please let me know how you make out with this.

Thank you.

I posted 13 days ago (see above). I just received a letter in the mail from Great American Readers and they have cancelled our account. I sent a letter to them by registered mail a while back, filed a complaint with the BBB in MN and filed a complaint with the FTC, Do Not Call Registry (because all of our phone numbers are registered) and filed a complaint with the MN Attorney General Office. They must have heard from all of these companies because they cancelled the subscription. We asked that they keep the money we paid and just stop the subscription and also told them we will sue if they don't. I did hear from the BBB and they told us this company -Great American Readers has an unsatisfactory rating with them and sometimes they resolve the issue or they may not. This scam goes under the names of Viking Magazine Service, VMS, Great American Readers and Blue Whale Publications in FL. Every time they called us it was a different number that came up on the caller ID. So they are scamming everyone out there and it is hard to keep up with the names and phone numbers. I think we are done with them now, I still have to check with the Credit companies. Everyone out there needs to do the same thing and stop these people. Good Luck everyone.

They kept calling me and I wouldn't answer and finally I answered. That was a couple days ago. Haven't made a payment yet but I sent them an email canceling my service. Today in the mail I get mail from them says I'm going to pay $68.96 a month which is ridiculous and adds up to $1034.40 total for the 15 months not worth it. And a release form for the $500 shopping spree. Sorry if I have to sign a release form to get it I don't want it. Kinda fishy to me. So needless to say I canceled it before it went anywhere. I've been sick I have three toddlers 1-4 and have been spacey lately so don't even listen to half the stuff going on when someone's talking to me on the phone. The second lady asked me to lie to the third lady and the third lady informed me I wouldn't be paying the $3.95 a month but rather over $60. When she went through the do you remember this step the only question I could answer was the company's name..yes that's how out of it I've been being sick. If they take money out of my account I will be filing for fraud since it hasn't been 14 days and no payments have been made and no product has been recieved.
Now my question...if you haven't recieved a product but have made payments and if you can change the magazines when eer and as often as you want why can't they cancel your service...in order to change the magazine isn't that basically what they are doing anywyas? Sounds a little iffy to me.

I work for a small mag co. I talk to a lot of pissed off people. I don't blame you for being pissed off, mostly for being treated so badly. Any time we talk to a potential customer, or even a current customer, it's CUSTOMER SERVICE! I don't care how pissed off the person is, BE PROFESSIONAL! It's not that hard. As for getting the calls stopped, the only thing i can say, short of changing you #, just politely ask to be taken off the companies call list. If you get another call from THAT PARTICULAR company, ask for the customer service #. If they are any kind of decent company, you should not have a problem. However, you must remember that there are alot of mag. companies out there, so you may recieve more calls from other companies. Just politely ask to be removed from that companies list. The calls will stop over a short period of time. Please remember, we are not all out to scam. Our particular company PRIDES itself on Excellent customer service. If the person you are speaking with is rude, ask to speak with their supervisor and put in a complaint about the agent. And please try to be polite even though they were rude. This will make you the better of the two. Thank you for your time.

I ordered magazines in Jan.2010 but cancelled by phone before the grace period in Feb.2010. My checking acct was debited in Feb. and again in Mar. and customer service said I can't cancel my subscription by phone. I have to pay the $1ooo for the magazines even though i haven't recieved the first one. I'm out $150 dollars but the main thing is that they are overdrafting my acct which cost $35 each time they attempt to take money from me. Now my only course of action is to change my acct so it won't keep costing me the $35 fee per attemt to collect money for nothing. That is what I received from Viking. Nothing but a "BILL". I am considering contacting my atty because i haven't even received a contract from them. I know it seems trivial. Its only $150 but what do you do when a company wrongs you won't give you an oppurtunity to settle a disbute with them. I'm a professional and I'm glad my co' "New York Life" doesn't treat its clients like this. I know I don't.

i just spoke with these people and they were offering the same basic thing 60 months 3.98 a week and 500 dollar shopping spree. While talking to them i googled the information and surprise surprise "scam" and "ripoff" popped up all over the place. when i asked the woman how to cancel if i decided to agree to their offer she talked around it several times before i changed my tone of voice! Once i became a little irritated with her and told her to stop giving me a talk off she said she wasn't with the cancellation department and that i would have to ask them "AFTER" i enrolled about the cancellation details. I use to work for a large credit card company in customer service and EVERYDAY customers were disputing things just like this which is why i was skeptical! DON'T FALL FOR THIS and if you simply can't help yourself make sure the credit card number you give them is through a bank that has a FREE dispute process and a ZERO fraud liability commitment to their clients or this could end up costing you big!

You can see how to protect yourself and seek help against illegal tactics.

Don't let them push you around. The credit buisness borders closely on harassement.

Here are some common threats made by debt collectors:

"We're going to take your house unless you pay this bill immediately." This is a bogus threat. Unless the debt being collected is secured by the house in question (i.e., a mortgage or home equity loan), the creditor does not have the power to take your house away from you.

"If you don't pay this bill today, we're going to have a warrant issued for your arrest." Nonsense. Failure to pay a debt is a civil matter, not a criminal matter. Threatening a debtor with jail time or accusing them of committing a crime is totally against the rules.

"We don't care that you sent a cease communication notice. We're going to call you anyway." The FDCPA gives you the right to terminate contact efforts by a debt collector. Failure to respect a cease communication notice is a clear violation of Federal law.

"We're going to garnish your wages to recover this debt." A collector can only threaten action it has the legal authority to take, and the vast majority of collection agencies have zero legal authority. Your wages can only be garnished by a creditor after they have won a judgment against you in a lawsuit.

"We know where you live, so you better pay up." Yes, threats of violence still happen in this industry. Nearly 300 complaints against collectors received by the FTC last year cited the threat of violence as the cause of the complaint. This is absolutely illegal.

Aside from the usual bogus threats, collectors also use other tactics that are illegal. For example, discussing your debt with a third party is a clear violation of the FDCPA. Yet collectors routinely call neighbors, relatives, and employers to obtain information on debtors. So long as the collector does not discuss the actual matter of the debt, they still have their toes on the right side of the line. But as soon as they mention or even hint that they are calling about a debt, they have crossed the line.

Thank you for posting your experiences with this company. They called me the other night and the whole deal sounded ok to me. Get some magazines and a "free $500 online shopping spree." It was really just about the magazines all along, I bet I would have never been able to utilize said shopping spree. Personally I thought it to be an attempt at fraud as shortly after learning about the company they wanted me to fork over my credit card info. When I told them I would like to check into the company before going ahead they were understanding, no problem with the agents but I sure am glad I didn't go through with it at this point after reading what they plan on doing after getting my payment info...screw me. Cheers to all of you, and good luck to those of you who have had huge headaches with this company.

I got a call about two days ago from Viking Magazine, it sounded pretty cool and the 500$ shopping spree sounded great of coarse then I went through the whole thing three calls, recording etc. I was genuinely interested but I told them I don't know if I could afford it and they delayed my first payment till next month. Then I got my first paycheck, there is no way I will be able to afford it and then I read all this and I realized that I may be in big trouble I can't cancel my card b/c its my primary 1 and only card, they haven't charged me yet and I haven't received any thing from them (so it Cant be too late to cancel i hope). I then called to cancel viking magazine and got some grumpy girl telling me that they would cancel and someone will call me in 2 weeks wtf should I do?!?!?!?!

Does anyone here know if "Viking Magazines" are the only people who do the stupid 60-month commitment thing? I was just called claiming that I ordered with them, and was locked in to 60 months, but I was so confused and frustrated that I forgot to ask who these people were and their number came up "UNLISTED" on my cell phone. If anyone knows if there are any other companies who do this crap, please let me know...I can't afford this crap I never asked for!
