I am so disappointed in this company. We are a military family that lived on Little Rock AFB, and our only option for phone and internet was this company. 7 months later, we had to move because the government told us. First, I was on hold for over 30 minutes. I realize many companies do this on purpose to deter cancellations in hopes that customers will get frustrated being on hold and give up. I am disappointed CenturyLink engages in that practice.
When I finally spoke to an agent, what did said agent say after I told him why we had to cancel? "Oh well, it's standard practice, everyone gets charged this."
I think it's generally a terrible practice to charge a fee like this in the first place, but to charge military families this fee that are disconnecting because we HAVE to move is ridiculous and a poor business practice.
Sure, it's "only" $12.00, but we "only" have friends all across the country and you better believe I'll be spreading the word to every single one to avoid Century Link if possible. Why would any member of the military want anything to do with a company that has a blatant disrespect for them and the job they are doing? So very disappointing.
Here's one family you can count on never doing business with again, CenturyLink. I hope it was worth your $12.
Century Link has also tried to charge me $12.00 by sending me a final bill after I requested that they disconnect my service. I telephoned Century Link customer service at [protected] and asked why the charge. They said it cost $12.00 to disconnect. I told them that if they did not credit me with a new bill in the mail I would file a complaint with the US district court. The supervisor was put on the line and they quickly agreed to provide a credit for the $12.00. I guess more and more people are having their phone service disconnected and going with cell service that Century Link see a chance to rip off their customers. I suggest that everyone call and get a refund for their charge of $12.00. If there is an attorney out there that would like to file a class action law suit against Century Link please email me at ordas@comcast.net. They should be made to pay back everyone.
Thank You.
I absolutely agree. They should NOT be charging a $12.00 disconnection fee or any fee for that matter because I read on Centurylink's actual website and it clearly states when you type in the question: How do I change or cancel my Centurylink Services?
"There is NO CHARGE to disconnect your phone service. You will ONLY be billed for charges PRIOR to the date of disconnection. I have attached a copy of it below. So, Centurylink tell us why you continue to charge a disconnection fee? Because you have charged me for disconnection. And when I called to ask why you all are still charging this fee when it says on your website that you will not charge anything NO ONE had the same answer. Centurylink is the WORST Company EVER!
Agree, just like everyone else said. Don't roll over and accept it. Call Centurylink customer service. They'll tell you its a disconnect fee. Tell them you never agreed to it and weren't under contract so there should be no fee. I would also direct them to their own FAQ page where it says there is no fee to disconnect service. Finally, mention the state Utility Regulatory Commission and that will usually shut them up. It took all of about 2 minutes on the phone with them to get them to take it off the bill. Basically, just call and be polite but firm. I'm sure the CSRs think it's a dumb fee too.
I wasn't as lucky as Tom H. I've sent a complaint to the Utility Regulatory Commission.
Thanks Tom, I just received the following:
This is in response to your e-mail to the Public Utilities Commission of Nevada (“PUCN”) regarding your billing dispute with CenturyLink.
Please be advised that as of 2007 with the passage of AB 518, the PUCN no longer regulates rates, pricing, terms and conditions of basic network service provided by competitive suppliers, therefore we have no authority in matters pertaining to your dispute.
As a courtesy, your complaint was forwarded to CenturyLink Regulatory Affairs for resolution. CenturyLink reported that they waived the disconnect fee leaving you with a zero balance on the closed account.
Thank you for taking your time to contact the PUCN and express your concerns. Your comments and concerns will remain on file with the Consumer Complaint Resolution Division of the PUCN for three years.
Sincerely,
Lisa Scott

In same boat here, I wanted to cancel Centrylink months ago but they wanted $200 to break my contract, so I kept them until the last day of contract, canceled my service on the last day of the billing cycle so not to carry over to the next month, and today I get a bill for Disconnect Service Order, not only 12 bucks but taxes to for a total of 13.27 I am tempted to not pay it
