I went to the Cloverdale Shell yesterday to see about getting a new bulb for my headlights on a 1995 Ford Taurus. I have had problems before with this station where they price things differently if a woman brings a car in for repairs, but what happened yesterday was truly egregious and above and beyond. I have had headlight bulbs replaced in this vehicle before, and am aware that they run $7.00 to $8.00 per bulb at Advance Auto parts, and take less than one minute to install. They installed two bulbs and informed me that the price would be $54.00 before tax. I stated that I was aware of the price of the bulbs, and the owner looked at me and lied and told me he was only making $3.00 profit per bulb, which was outright fraud. I then asked (since I had already had estimates from two different service stations) what it would run to replace the headlamps themselves. These headlamps are $40.00 per lamp, and both estimates I got at other service stations were approximately $100.00 to replace both lamps. I was told by the owner of Cloverdale Shell that it would be $170.00 PER HEADLAMP, not including labor, so it would be approximately $500.00 to replace the headlamps. This is 5 times higher than the estimates I was given at two other service stations. While I do realize that some service stations inflate their prices whenever a woman comes, since they know women are not aware of the prices of auto parts, I was shocked and dismayed that a local Winston-Salem business would inflate the prices by 5 x's the going market rate.
