Attention residue has the best description where low-quality work is produced along the lines of shifting attention or focus from one task to the other while some of the load is unshifted. It results in a self-inflicting exercise strain which could be mentally taxing and annoying as well. For example, if you try to open a new document, then it wheels around re-engaging the brain such as switching ideas from the first document to the second which is not easy therefore, it shifts back to some remnants of the previous document. It is advisable to only work on one project or one task at a time so than a person wouldn’t leave a torn shred on the project which in turn means that only one project would get full attention. Therefore only one perfect project would get completed instead of multiple average ones. If you still find it difficult to abide by the advice, don’t panic. It would just take you time to usethe advice like a pro!
I was an accountant, worked solo to keep mistakes at a minimum, i wouldn't open more than one book if I didn't have to. What i found is that if i got stuck, being able to take a break from it it would help me find the numbers to balance it. Its not always my fault, usually the data was in correct so i had to clarify. I would usually finish my work before lunch and dedicate the rest to help my coworkers to finish.
I agree that definition of productivity has been more or less confused with activity, though in fast-paced jobs like sales or team leadership I am unsure as to how this will translate. Knowing about attention residue is one thing but trying to minimize it is another!
I had direct reports once, and I never interpreted "looking busy all the time" as a sign of being productive, actually, it was a sign of problems. I am Ok with my team planning a trip as long as all daily jobs are complete, and they support our customers wholeheartedly. It is the results that matters, not being busy.
On an Operational System class at college, more than 20 years ago, while teacher explain multi process with just one processor I asked:
"But this context change between two or more process will add time at the end and take longer than process being made one after the end of the previous".
Professor replies:
"You are right, but the user wants longer time to accomplish since he has the feeling of things being made same time "
