Mate1 Enterprises review: unauthorized credit card billing! 129

This review was chosen algorithmically as the most valued customer feedback.

Mate1.com placed a $49.95 unauthorized charge on my credit card after I canceled the $1.95 three (3) day "trial" membership. Called to remove the charge. Some "MIKE" at Mate1.com said I was minutes late canceling the trial period (which I was not as I canceled the second day). Refused to get supervisor (probably no supervisors there).

Rouge company that will rip you off!

Mate1 is a Master-Baiter, here's how...

Mate1 .com is a scam and so is Gammahost.com I was searching the internet for home based employment. You know the type of employment where you dont have to lay down a few hundred dollars or even 20.00 dollars to get a job working from home.

In my search I found, Mate1.com Intimate Dating Service. It said something like, Earn a extra 100.00 a week being a online Ambassador just answering e-mails from the comfort of your home.

I thought ok I can do that and the add said it would take only a few hours a day. Hmmmm. 2 hours a day for a hundred a week ok I'll do that.

This is how I thought it was suppose to work, Guys see my profile, send me mail. I reply within 48 hrs and I get paid 100.00 A week. This is how it was explained to me. Below is the actual letter I recieved from mate 1

Congratulations! You've been chosen out of several hundred applicants for the position of Online Ambassador. If you are genuinely interested in the position, please read the attached agreement, sign it and fax it to the number mentioned in the letter. As well, we will need your
mailing address in order to send checks to you. If you prefer to be paid by paypal, we will need the appropriate information. You can provide that information simply by replying to this email. Payment details are in the attached letter. Please specify how you would like to be paid and don't forget to include your full first and last name.

Your job as Online Ambassador is as straight forward as it gets: to reply to all emails that you receive in your Mate1 inbox within 48 hours. You should not mention your Online Ambassador status unless you are asked.

Instead, simply reply in a friendly manner. Your role is simply to make people feel at home on the site and make light conversation via email, What you write is up to your good judgment, and you should be yourself. There are more details in the attached letter, which you should read
carefully before signing it and faxing it to [protected].

If possible, we'd like you to start May 13th for a 4 week period. Because the positions fill up fast, please resond as soon as possible if interested.

If you have any questions at all, feel free to contact me.

Yours truly,

Tina Kissavos

Online Ambassador Guidelines
Last updated 12/15/04

Here's a quick guide to properly handling situations that may arisewhile you are responding to email from Mate 1 members. Please read them carefully.

1. We do not recommend that you mention your Online Ambassador status unless you are asked. However, you must answer honestly if asked.

If someone asks any of the following questions:

Q: Do you work for Mate1?
Q: What does 'OA' stand for?
Q: What is an Online Ambassador?

Answer something like this:

I was a member of Mate 1 and they chose me to be an online ambassador (that's what that OA logo on my profile means). I spend a couple of hours online every day emailing other members and making them feel welcome.

2. You are expected to be yourself, natural and casual, in your replies. If someone writes something that offends you, you are free to tell them what you think.

3. If someone asks for your personal email address, your personal instant messenger handle or any other personal contact info off the site, you should tell them that you feel more comfortable corresponding on the site.

4. You are not expected to communicate with anyone by Mate 1 instant messenger, but you are free to do so if you wish.

5. If you receive more than one message from the same member in between times that you log in to respond, you are only responsible for answering their most recent email.

Now what they didnt tell me was that They would send out an email addressed from me to ALL of the males and lesbian females on the site telling them that I liked their profile, That I wanted to correspond with them and to get back with me by of coarse sendind me an email.

LOL... Do you know how many e-mails I got in one day? about 500 Men who were 65 years old were flattered that I, (really Mate 1) had sent them a letter and that I, (really mate 1) wanted to correspond with them. Ya see men have to pay high prices to mate 1 to be a Member.

Mate one gives them a trial and then ropes them in with the, 'Online Ambassador girls' The guys think, WOW Im gonna meet this girl, This girl is interested in me and I cant lose contact with her so Id better get a membership.

The online ambassador girls are thinking wow all I have to do is answer emails from guys who are genuinly interested in me and I get paid for it! WRONG!

These people are not only scamming guys who are lonely but women too who are trying to make money from home. There is no way that someone can get to all those emails in 48 hours or less NOT unless you live on the computer and Even then I dont think that you can do it. Even if you copy and pasted a generic letter to all 500 in a day you couldnt do it. Why?

Because while you are on the site people can see when you are there and they can instant message you. So you get BOMBARDED with instant mesages, You get BOMBARDED with mail and then the site gets real slow and your computer freezes on the site. so how are you suppose to get to the email? You have to keep logging off and logging back in which takes even more time. Its a scam guys.

None of these girls want to talk to you. They didnt send you the email. Mate 1 sent it on their (Online Ambassadors) behalf and without them even realizing it. I dont think they even plan to pay people a hundred a week. They just let them anwser as much email as possilbe, let them give up and move on to the next sucker. That way the site is always in supply of fresh pretty faces sending out massive emails to lonely men who think they just got real lucky!

Wow what a bunch of shi!

This site is a con, but fair play to them. They lure you with $2 charges for 3 days trial, and then charge you $50 a month... If you read the small print (as I did) you would have realised that they were going to charge you... It took me 2 minutes and I was convinced not to sign up, READ, dont just go around ticking terms and conditions boxes all over the place without checking what you are agreeing to.

I also noticed that you can quit within 3 days, but the only method mentioned is by SnailMail and they will take the date of Postage as the quit date, yes the good old post sytem (unless you are in UTah? where you can fax an unsubscribe). Seeing as I live in England, the letter would take more than 3 days to get there which would result in them charging me the $50 and then having to refund it (or hopefully refund it). It also says that they reserve the right to put a hold on your card (making your available balance $50 less then the account balance on your card), as soon as you sign up. If you get anything wrong or miss anything on your quitting letter, they will simply ignore it and your membership will continue (again in the terms)/ It is a scam, but a legal scam.

Why do you think they are based in Vancouver for christ sakes, the criminal capital of the world!

Hopefully this may help some people

Ya this site SUCKS. Full of FAKE profiles and ugly woman. You'd have better chance of finding a decent woman at an Alcoholic Anonymous meeting than Mate1. Every woman on that site is either fat, ugly, has a TON of a baggage or all three apply. I love talking to Morbidly obese jenny who has three kids, is an alcoholic, lives on welfare and smokes 30 cigarettes a day. HORRIBLE Wouldn't recommend this site to anyone.

Yeah...I came across this site looking for other complaints against mate1.com
I just talked to a customer service rep, and I now realize I should have read the fine print.
I (and most of us) understand that a three day "trial" is just that...you shouldn't have to cancel your membership.
Yes...it's a legal scam...and it shouldn't be that difficult (snail mail) to get a refund.
I just mailed my 3 day refund, I noticed I got billed yesterday...glad I checked my bank account.
In the meantime, I'm going report my CC as being lost so I don't get charged again.
Wish I'd seen this site before my 3-day "trial"...what a joke.

If nothing happens, I'm going to file a complaint with the BBB.

As there seems to be some confusion about our service, we would like to take this opportunity to address some of the latest posts and concerns about Mate1.

First and foremost, our 3 day trial is $1.95, and is not in any way a "lure" or "con" but is simply what it states: a 3 day evaluation period for you to try the service. We don't want members to sign up for a month or longer if after a few days they are not enjoying the service, and so in the interest of our members, we ask that they try the site before they become regular subscribers. We feel that a 3 day period of time (72 hours) is ample opportunity to test the features, access your mail, chat, etc and thus come to a decision about our site. Many members will try it over a weekend when they have more free time.

We also strongly encourage members to try the free features of our site first, such as searches, matches, Hotlists and so on, and highly recommend that members complete their profiles and most importantly add photos to their profiles before they begin a 3 day trial.

Many trial members are pleased with what they see and wish to continue using the service. If for any reason you do not wish to continue, you simply need to cancel any further billing.

The trial offer page clearly states the following, in regular sized font: "For your convenience, if you do not cancel your trial before the end of the three day period, your trial membership will automatically convert to a full membership on the day after your three day trial ends. Your credit card will be automatically billed at the rate of forty-nine dollars and ninety-five cents after the end of your trial and every thirty days thereafter, until you cancel. If you do not wish to become a full member you must cancel your trial membership before your three day trial expires. You may cancel at any time by clicking on the Account Settings button on the Mate1 homepage or by calling customer service"

This information is repeated TWICE more - once on the confirmation screen you get after you purchase (which can be printed AND features a handy time stamp telling you when you signed up) and a 3rd time in your email receipt which all members get sent.

We also strongly encourage consumers to read any Terms of Membership and Terms of Conditions not only on our site, but on any site they sign up with. They are there to inform you, the customer of, among of other things, your rights and responsibilities.

You do NOT need to cancel by "snail mail", in fact we don't normally process any cancellations by postal mail - you can instead cancel your subscription in one of 3 ways - 1) doing so yourself online on our site, 2) contacting us by phone, or 3) by email. Our phone lines are open from Monday to Friday, from 8am to 10pm. That's a 14 hour window of opportunity 5 days a week. Our phone lines are rarely busy but in the event that they are, please try again shortly or cancel your own subscription online or by email. Many online sites, and dating services don't have any form of phone support at all - we pride ourselves in not only having a toll free number but a great customer care team behind it.

The mail-in policy described in a previous post is strictly for refunds, and is in place for members who fail to cancel a membership before any billing date, whether it’s a trial or a monthly rebill. We give our members 3 days of grace after any billing date to apply for a refund, which is helpful is you miss a deadline, forget, have technical difficulties, are ill, etc. Any letters requesting a refund need to be postmarked within 3 days of a billing date - they don't have to reach us within 3 days but be postmarked within 3 days. For more information, please review our Terms and Conditions, Section 4 VII. Please note that we receive very few letters as most members resolve any issues with us by calling our toll free customer care number. We cannot stress enough that we can resolve almost any issue by phone and strongly encourage anyone posting here to contact us if they have not already done so, so that we can work together to reach an amicable solution.

We also wish to point out that, as stated on our site, Mate1 is a dual-nation company with an address in both Plattsburgh, New York and Montreal, Canada. We don't have any offices in Vancouver. Both mailing addresses can be found under Help/Contact Us on our site.

Yours truly,
Mate1 Support.

I DO NOT RECOMMEND USING MATE1.COM AT ALL

THEY SCAM YOU TO JOIN AND PAY AND TO KEEP YOU PAYING EACH MONTH WITH FRAUDULENT MESSAGES FROM ONLINE AMBASSADORS

WHAT IS THE DEFINITION OF AMBASSADOR? 'an ambassador of good will'

What is MATE1.COM 's defitionition of their Online Ambassador? To hire women all accross the United States or World and provide them an exciting 'work at home' career opportunity where they will spend a few hours a week to lie, cheat, steal, scam, mislead, and fraudulently send messages to members of the Mate1 site who join during the 3 day trial, and make them think they are getting dozens of messages from other girls who are interested in them, but these trial members cannot communicate and respond to these messages unless they pay the $49.95 membership fee. And when you do reply to all these online ambassadors messages, you never hear back from them. They just all send you messages to profit, and get you to pay.

Also, if you are an existing customer and member of MATE1.COM, and your membership expires, you will notice that you will start getting dozens of emails from girls who like you and want to communicate with you, and when you pay, you again never hear from them again.

MATE1.COM IS A COMPLETE FRAUD AND SCAM

I have been a member (paying member) for 8 months now, paying 49.95 x 8 months and so far I have lost a total of $400.

But I cannot even count how many hours I spent on Mate1 the last 8 months, probably some 100 hours total.

Recently, I decided to not use MATE1.COM for a month after my membership expired, but when i went back to the site just 5 days ago, I noticed I had 23 new messages. So stupid me I pull out my credit card and pay the 49.95 fee so i can see my messages and reply to them.

When I look at most of the messages, I see very beautiful women, and I can tell they are all fake, because why would a beautiful woman be on a dating website like Mate1? IT NEVER HAPPENS! They would never need or think of using a dating website, because they would not have a problem finding a date where they live. So i know most of the girls are fake.

Another problem, alot of girls that do want to chat online using MATE1.COM, about 95% of them want you to join their WEBCAM site and enter your credit card info. And they send you a link to a website that is NOT secure, and when I research the website they take you to, it is a website that is registered and owned by a company and hosted by a company in Malaysia or another foreign company, so the only purpose of the site is to steal your credit card info.

Does Mate1 do anything about it? No! They will not easily delete users because they need the membership fees to make a huge profit.

I looked at Mate1 on Google, and they have alot of negative complaints about them.

I researched MATE1.COM on the Better Business Bureau website, and they have a rating of F as well as having some 23 complaints on them at /link removed/ site

I am from Arkansas. I signed up for the $1.95 trial, didn't like it, and I thought my membership would just expire. Instead it was renewed for a full membership and I got charged $49.95 for it. It was only a few days ago that I signed up so it should be too hard to get a refund and be done with it, and if they don't it will just prove what scame artists they are.

I've received some "messages" via my email from women in their 20s, when I specifically stated the age group that I'm in and a potential date should. I've also got one or two emails from "ambassadors" girls in their early to mid 20s who said they were also into "girls" and were looking for a wild time.

I mean, ... come on. Give me a break.
