Roommates.com Review: A Solid Choice for Finding a Roommate
I gotta say, I'm giving Roommates.com a solid 4 stars. It's not perfect, but it's definitely helped me find a roommate twice now - once back in 2005 and again in 2007. My last roommate stuck around for a whopping 14 years before he moved out and got hitched. Now I'm back on the hunt, and I gotta say, the pickings are a little slim. I'm looking for a mature, drama-free dude to share my space with, and it's not always easy to find someone who fits the bill.
One thing I do appreciate about Roommates.com is that they don't make everyone pay to use the site. Sure, I'm shelling out $15 a month to stay on top of new listings and contact potential renters before the scammers and flakes get to them, but at least I'm not having to pay just to see who's out there. And speaking of scammers, I gotta give props to Roommates.com for having a report button and letting me block people from messaging me. It's not foolproof, but it's definitely better than nothing.
Now, I know some folks might be put off by the fact that you can only communicate with other users through the app. But honestly, that's not a big deal for me. I'm a woman, and I don't really want to give out my name and address to just anyone. Plus, I'm not really into using Facebook for this kind of thing. So the fact that I can keep things contained within the app is actually a plus in my book.
Of course, there are some downsides to Roommates.com. Like I said, the pickings can be slim, and it's not always easy to find someone who's a good fit. And yeah, $15 a month can add up pretty quickly. But honestly, if someone isn't willing to pay that much to find a place to live, they're probably not going to be the most reliable roommate anyway. And hey, I get it - the folks behind Roommates.com need to make a living too. It's not like they're asking for an arm and a leg.
All in all, I'd say Roommates.com is a pretty solid choice if you're looking for a roommate. It's not perfect, but it's definitely helped me out in the past, and I'm hopeful that it'll help me find someone good this time around too. If I had one wish, it'd be that they could somehow do a background/credit check as part of the sign-up process. That would definitely weed out some of the less savory characters and make the whole process a lot smoother. But hey, you can't have everything, right?
False Advertising: My Disappointing Experience with Roommates.com
I gotta say, I'm pretty disappointed with Roommates.com. They advertise themselves as a free site, but then hit you with a paywall when you actually want to use it. It's not cool to trick people like that.
I mean, seriously, why even bother calling yourself free if you're just going to charge people for the most basic functions? It's not like they're offering anything special or unique that would justify the cost.
And don't even get me started on the fact that they don't even tell you whether or not someone has actually paid for the site. It makes me wonder if most of the profiles on there are just abandoned because people didn't want to pay.
I did get a response from them, but it didn't really address my concerns. They suggested that I could just put my contact information in the comments or profile description, but that doesn't really help if people can't even see those things without paying.
And let's not forget that you can't even read messages without paying. So even if someone does manage to find your contact information, you still have to cough up the cash just to see what they said.
Overall, I'm just not impressed with Roommates.com. They need to be more upfront about their costs and stop trying to trick people into paying for something they thought was free.
My Experience with Roommates.com: A Review of the 3-Day Trial
Hey guys, I just wanted to share my experience with Roommates.com. I know some people have had some negative things to say about it, but I decided to give it a try with their 3-day trial. I'm definitely going to keep an eye on it to make sure I only get charged the one-time fee (you can email me at ***@roommates.com if you want to know how it goes).
I have to say, though, that unless you pay, you won't really get any benefit from the site. But once you do pay, it's been great for me so far. I've only been on for 2 days and everything I've checked into has been legit and real in Jax, FL. The people I've talked to have been real, we've texted and sent pics, and I think I may have found the perfect place for me.
I'll find out more tomorrow, but I actually prefer Roommates.com over Craigslist. The only thing is that the person you email also has to be paying to use the service, otherwise they won't see your description at the end of your bio. And of course, you won't be able to email messages. But I did get phone numbers with local numbers, which is a plus.
I did get a few messages from Craigslist asking me to go to roommatenext.com (not roommates.com) to inquire about the room, but I ignored them based on other reviews I read. They weren't local phone numbers that texted me, so I figured it was a scam.
The key to all of this is that people have to pay to see the facts, but you get what you pay for. Customer service has been really good to me, too. If you need to verify anything, feel free to contact me. I was actually impressed with how everything turned out, since I didn't have high hopes to begin with.
So, in conclusion, I would definitely recommend Roommates.com to anyone looking for a roommate. Just remember that everyone has to pay for the service, and I'm currently on the 3-day trial. Hope this helps, and I'm pleasantly surprised with how everything has gone so far!
Roommates.com Review: Disappointing Experience, Not Worth the Cost
I needed a place to live, so I decided to give Roommates.com a try. I signed up for their paid membership about 8-9 years ago and I was able to find a great roommate. Fast forward to now, I had a place to rent out and I thought I would use Roommates.com again to find a new roommate. However, my experience this time around was not as great as before.
I posted an ad on Roommates.com and I mostly received emails that were "flagged by their fraud department". I was not able to see the content of those emails, only that the message was removed. I also sent several emails to potential roommates, but I never received any responses. Little did I know at the time, but most of those people did not have a paid membership, which is why they were not able to respond to my messages.
I decided to upgrade my membership in hopes of getting more responses. While I did receive a couple of messages, it was not enough to justify the cost of the paid membership. I was still receiving "flagged" messages often, which was frustrating.
Once my paid membership ended, I decided not to renew it. However, I kept my free ad running just in case. I did receive a few "flagged" emails and a couple of what seemed to be legitimate emails, but I was not able to read them unless I paid for another membership. I thought this was ridiculous and unfair. The ability to read and respond to emails should not be a premium feature.
It seems like Roommates.com is just a scam now. They have made up profiles to make it look like there are more people on the site than there actually are. It's disappointing because it used to be a good service, but now it's just a waste of time and money.
It's been 8-9 years since I last used Roommates.com and I was hoping that the website would have been upgraded by now, but it looks exactly the same as it did back then. It's clear that they have not made any improvements to the site or their services. I would not recommend using Roommates.com to anyone looking for a roommate.
Beware of Roommates Emily Fleur Butler and Chloe Cruickshank: Untrustworthy and Disgusting
So, I gotta tell you about my experience with Roommates.com. I had these two roommates, Chloe Cruickshank and Emily Fleur Butler, and let me tell you, they were not trustworthy at all. I was their landlord and roommate for three whole years, and during that time, they were always late on rent and bills. But, I was understanding and let it slide. I even let them pay less than a month for their deposit when they first moved in.
But, when it was time for them to move out, they stopped paying rent and bills a whole month before they were supposed to leave. They told me that their deposit would cover the rent, and I trusted them. They also promised to pay the outstanding bills, and I believed them.
Then, they stayed longer than their scheduled move out date, which meant they owed me even more money. They promised to pay the difference before they left, but when move out day came, they left without paying me a dime. I've been trying to get in touch with them ever since, but they've been ignoring my texts, emails, and calls. They owe me almost ?1000, and I'm a student without a lot of money myself.
To make matters worse, when they left, their room was a complete disaster. There was mold all over the walls, and the floor was covered in dirt, dust, trash, dirty socks, and press-on nails. It was absolutely disgusting, and I don't know how they could live like that.
So, my advice to you is to avoid Emily Fleur Butler and Chloe Cruickshank at all costs. They will lie to get out of paying, and they are just plain gross. Don't make the same mistake I did and trust them.
Review of Roommates.com: A Decent Site for Finding a New Roomie
I gotta say, Roommates.com is a pretty decent site for finding a new roomie. Sure, there are some fake profiles on there, but there are also plenty of real people looking for a place to live. I've been using the site for a few days now and have already talked to a few potential roommates.
Some folks are quick to blame the site for their own mistakes. Like, there was this one lady who said she was raped by someone she met on the site. But then she admitted that she got herself drunk and that she's an alcoholic. Like, come on now, that's not the site's fault.
The site itself could use some work though. The layout is kinda wonky and there are some glitches here and there. And the info you can put in your profile isn't the greatest. But I do like the smiley system they have for rating potential roommates.
I've been scammed by other roommate sites before, but Roommates.com seems pretty legit. When I had an issue with my account being scammed, the account managers were quick to reimburse me. And they responded to my questions and complaints pretty fast, which is impressive considering how many users there are.
The only real problem I had was that I couldn't upload a photo to my profile. And they don't let you put phone numbers or emails in your profile either, which is kinda annoying. But I get why they do it - they're trying to cut down on spam and scams.
All in all, I'd say Roommates.com is a solid choice for finding a new place to live. Definitely better than some of the other sites out there (cough cough, rommiemates.com and roomster.com).
Roommates.com Review: A Total Waste of Time and Money
I gotta say, I've had better luck finding roommates on Craigslist than on Roommates.com. Sure, Craigslist is full of scammers, but at least I occasionally get a response from a real person who's actually looking for a room in my city. And the best part? It's free!
But then I tried Roommates.com, and boy was I disappointed. I got one person who was interested in the room, but they asked for more "verification" before they would commit. I had to pay $2.99 to Roommates.com to try to verify my ID, but they rejected it and asked for my social security number as an alternate way to "verify" my identity. What the heck?! I mean, worst case scenario, they (or some hackers?) are trying to steal my identity. Best case (?), the Roommates.com website sucks and it now looks like I failed verification. Either way, it's a total waste of time and money.
And speaking of money, I've had several "matches" say that they refuse to pay the cost to read my post. So what's the point of even trying to communicate? It's a total waste of time and money. And now I'm worried that my security, privacy, and identity could be vulnerable to theft. This is an awful "service" and a huge mistake on my part. It sure seems like a scam to me.
Update: I did get my money back after I reported the problem to my bank and asked for a refund. Roommates.com insisted that they're not a scam and paid the refund in full. But seriously, what's up with charging people to "verify" their ID? And please stop saying that the service is free if communication can't be accessed without paying. Just be upfront and say that you can post a profile for free, but you have to pay to access matches if you decide to use the service. It's more honest that way.
Beware of Scammers on Roommates.com: My Experience with a Fake Renter
I gotta say, I had a pretty bad experience with Roommates.com. I mean, I got an email from someone named Kate Jenny who seemed interested in renting my room, but it turned out to be a total scam. She sent me this long email about herself and her dad and all this stuff, but it was all fake. I did a search on her dad's email and found out that it was a common scam that they use to try and rob people. And get this, they even sent me a cashier's check that bounced when I tried to deposit it! I mean, what kind of scam is that?
Anyway, I just wanted to warn people to be careful when using Roommates.com. I know there are some legit people on there, but there are also a lot of scammers. So if you get an email from someone who seems too good to be true, it probably is. And if they ask you to accept a cashier's check or money order, run the other way! Trust me, you don't want to get caught up in that mess.
But hey, maybe I just had a bad experience. I know some people who have found great roommates on Roommates.com. So if you're willing to take a chance, go for it. Just be careful and don't fall for any scams. And if you do end up finding a great roommate, let me know! I could use some good news right about now.
Roommates.com Review: Shady Fees and Fake Listings - Buyer Beware
I gotta say, I was pretty disappointed with Roommates.com. I was in a real bind and needed a place to live, so I thought I'd give it a shot since they claim to be totally free. But let me tell you, it's not as free as they make it out to be.
First of all, a lot of the listings seem to be fake. You'll get a message from someone, but when you try to verify their account, it doesn't exist. And if you want to read those messages, you have to pay up.
Now, I know some dating sites do this too, but that doesn't make it any less frustrating. And what's worse is that both the property owners and the searchers have to pay fees on this site. So basically, everyone's getting charged.
And sure, creating an account and posting a listing is free, but if you want to actually communicate with anyone, you have to pay. As a listing poster or a searcher, you can't even read messages without coughing up some cash.
It's not just Roommates.com either. I did some research on online dating sites and found out that a lot of them use this bot baiting technique. It's all about making money off of software, and it's pretty shady if you ask me.
If you look around the site, you'll notice that a lot of the accounts don't even have photos. And you can't read their bios without paying either. It just doesn't seem right.
And here's the thing: a lot of these sites don't accept PayPal. Why? Because PayPal can intervene quickly in case of a dispute and reimburse your payment. These sites are probably covered by some provision that makes it hard to challenge the charges on your credit card.
It's like that old gentlemen's club in Atlanta where they spiked the drinks and charged people extra. Most people would dispute the charges, but some types of charges aren't subject to dispute. It's a real gray area.
And be careful, because a lot of these sites want your bank account or credit card info, but they're not actually searchable on Google. I've had people send me links from actual roommate finder sites, but when I click on them, they redirect me to sites that aren't even in the search engine.
I haven't paid for message box access on Roommates.com, so I can't say for sure if they're doing this too. But I've found it on over a dozen other premium sites, so it wouldn't surprise me.
Honestly, I think the whole roommate finder industry has given in to bot technology. They're not even trying to be an honest service anymore.
Look, I get it. When you're in a tough spot and need a place to live, you're not really thinking about the fairness of the site. You just want to find a room. But that's the worst part of it all. These sites are built around taking advantage of people's hardships.
So buyer beware.
Roommates.com Review: Great Idea, Poor Monetization Model & Fake Profiles
This website, Roommates.com, has a great idea and a good site design with lots of features that are easy to navigate. However, there are some negatives that I have experienced as a paying member for a few months. The poorly conceived monetization model and fake profiles are the main issues.
I understand that the company wants to get paid for offering a service, and if I end up finding a good roommate, then paying the subscription will have been worth it. However, I have had conversations with definitely real people, and I am sure that I would have found a roommate by now if I had been motivated enough. It's not the company's fault that I haven't yet found a roommate, but the fake profiles on the site have made it more difficult.
It took me a while before I realized that the attractive people with cheap, nice rooms being offered are fake profiles. This probably lengthened the amount of time I have spent on the site. It's frustrating when you gradually have to come to the realization that they have created an unrealistic expectation in your mind of what is possible. Roommates.com REALLY needs to fix this issue for the customer experience to be greatly improved.
Furthermore, the lack of understanding on both people's part of just exactly how to go from interested to moving in is a bit of an issue. If the site could work more on helping users navigate the stretch between matching and sealing the deal, I would think that would significantly improve the value they would be providing to users.
Finally, I strongly encourage the company to consider moving away from a subscription model, to a commission-based model where they only get paid when and if they find a match for the "seller" of the room. The monthly subscription creates a really perverse incentive for the company. If instead the company moved to something like a $150 commission paid by the person with the room once a contract is signed, then it really would highly align the incentives of the company with those of its users.

Roommates.com Review: Sneaky Payment Tactics and Poor User Experience
This website, Roommates.com, is all about paying to message people. The idea is good, but they should make people subscribe before they even sign up. They're using a sneaky technique to make you think you can do something, like seeing someone's pictures or getting a message, but then they won't let you until you pay. It's a cheap trick. Who wants to pay for a subscription just to find a roommate? That's something you do once, not every month.
The site isn't very useful, and the user interface is pretty bad. It looks like an old website, and some of the buttons don't even look clickable. From a user experience standpoint, the site is pretty bad too. They shouldn't use pop-ups for all of their messages. It's annoying.
Overall, I wouldn't recommend this site. It's not worth the money, and the user experience is pretty bad. There are better ways to find a roommate.
Roommates.com Review: A Total Rip-Off Scam with Fake Accounts and Disappearing Messages
This company, Roommates.com, is a complete rip-off. They use bots to trick people into paying for their subscription. Every person on the website is a fake account. They send random messages that magically disappear for no reason. This company is a total sham and will steal your hard-earned money. I recommend that you stay away from this company as far as possible. They will take your money and leave you with no service. I regret paying for my subscription, but it was a lesson learned. I love the internet, but companies like this make me hate it. If you're looking for a room or roommate(s), I suggest you look elsewhere. Facebook and Craigslist are much better options. Don't waste your time or money on Roommates.com.
Roommates.com Review: Lack of Transparency on Free Features and Pricing
This company, Roommates.com, might be alright if they were more upfront about what you can do for free. I spent a whole week anxiously waiting for a response to my messages so that I could find a roommate quickly (I got a job offer in a different city and need to move fast), only to receive a message and find out that I cannot read it or any other message without paying. If they had told me this from the beginning, it would have been okay, but waiting to tell me this after I have wasted a week of my time and someone else's seems really dishonest.
Honestly, I think craigslist works much better and it's free. You can find a roommate without having to pay any fees. It's really frustrating to have to pay for something that you can get for free elsewhere.
*Update*
I give the company credit, they responded to this review quickly, calmly, and in a professional manner. However, in my experience, most companies will provide a checklist of features at each price point upon creation of an account, so the customer is not unpleasantly surprised and forced to upgrade. It would be nice if Roommates.com did the same.
But I am really impressed with how fast they replied to this. Good work! It shows that they care about their customers and are willing to listen to feedback. Overall, I think Roommates.com has potential, but they need to be more transparent about their pricing and features.

Roommates.com: A Haven for Scammers and Con Artists - My Disappointing Experience
I gotta say, I've been trying to find a roommate on Roommates.com for a while now, and it's been a real headache. I mean, I've lost count of how many people I've talked to, but every single one of them has been trying to scam me. It's like they don't even want to show me the place or anything. They're always out of town, taking care of their sick parents or something like that.
But the last one really took the cake. She sounded great, and she even gave me an address, which was a first. So I looked it up, and what do you know? It was a bunch of luxury condos renting for over 5K a month. When I asked her about it, she said her condo wasn't one of the luxury ones. Yeah, right.
Honestly, this site is a total waste of my time and money. I'm not gonna pay another penny to be targeted by these con artists looking for an easy mark. And don't even bother with your canned response, Roommates.com. I know I'm not the only one who's had this experience, and you're not doing anything to change it. I bet there are plenty of gullible people out there getting robbed because of this site. It's a shame, really.
Mixed Experience with Roommates.com: Lack of Support and Inability to Deal with Spammers
So, I recently tried out Roommates.com and let me tell you, it was a bit of a mixed bag. First off, I was a bit disappointed to find out that there was no phone number to call if I had any issues. I mean, come on, I'm a paying member, the least they could do is have a phone line open for me. But, I digress. I reached out to them through written communication and I have to say, they did respond pretty quickly.
However, my excitement was short-lived when I realized that there was no way to block anyone who was bothering me. I mean, seriously, there are so many spammers on there and it's just a hassle to have to wade through all the junk to find the valid replies. And, it's not like Roommates.com is doing anything to help with this issue. They either don't have the skills or just don't care enough to allow users to sort out or block these spammers.
Their response to my complaint was just laughable. They actually asked me to stop sending them messages and that they would request that the spammer stop sending me messages. Like, what kind of response is that? And, to make matters worse, I had to ask them twice because they didn't seem to understand my issue the first time around.
All in all, I have to say that I was pretty disappointed with my experience on Roommates.com. It's a shame because it could be a great resource for finding a roommate, but the lack of support and inability to deal with spammers just makes it more trouble than it's worth.
Mixed Experience with Roommates.com: Frustrating Search, Fake Profiles, and Limited Success
I always check my email as soon as I get it, and I was excited to see that I had some new matches on Roommates.com. I clicked on the profiles for Jess C. and Philip C., but was disappointed to see that the profiles were already gone. This happens to me all the time - I get an email, click on the link, and the profile is already empty. It's frustrating because I'm really looking for a roommate, but it seems like most of the profiles are fake or already taken.
I've noticed that a lot of the profiles on Roommates.com have really strange names, like "Bubbles" or "Sunshine". It's pretty obvious that these profiles were written by people who don't speak English very well. I'm not saying that's a bad thing, but it does make me wonder if the site is legit.
Another issue I've had with Roommates.com is that the search area doesn't seem to work very well. I set my search radius to 20 miles, but I still get matches from people who live 30 or 40 miles away. It's frustrating because I'm really looking for someone who lives close to me.
The only interaction I've had on Roommates.com was with a woman who lived 50 miles away and wanted twice as much rent as I was willing to pay. I haven't had any luck finding a roommate in my area, which is disappointing.
Overall, I'm not sure if I would recommend Roommates.com. My sister did find a place using it, so it's not all bad. But I've had a lot of issues with fake profiles and people who don't live anywhere near me. If you decide to use Roommates.com, just be careful and enter at your own risk.
Roommates.com Review: Overpriced and Full of Fake Profiles
I gotta say, I'm not too impressed with Roommates.com. I mean, I get that they gotta make some money somehow, but $20 just to contact potential roommates? That's a bit steep if you ask me. But honestly, maybe it's for the best. I mean, there's so much garbage on this site. Fake profiles, people who aren't serious about finding a roommate, you name it. It's like trying to find a needle in a haystack.
And even if you do find someone who seems legit, you can't even contact them unless you've paid up. I mean, I get it, they gotta make their money somehow. But it just seems like a bit of a scam to me. I even made a fake email account just to try and get around it, but no dice. You still gotta pay up if you wanna talk to anyone.
Now, to be fair, I did have a few people reach out to me who seemed like they were actually looking for a roommate. But it took like six months for that to happen. And even then, it didn't work out. So I'm not exactly thrilled with this site.
And honestly, it doesn't even seem like a real roommate site to me. It's more like a place for people who can't afford their mortgage to rent out a room. Which, hey, I get it. Times are tough. But if you're looking for a real roommate situation, this might not be the place for you.
Mixed Experience with Roommates.com: Good First Roommate, Bad Second Roommate
My first time using Roommates.com was pretty good, but I had some issues with my second roommate. The first one was cool, no problems at all. But when he got married, I had to find a new one. This guy started emailing me and we talked a bit before he asked for my phone number. I thought it was okay, but then he started calling me all the time, asking me all kinds of personal questions about my politics and stuff. He was really pushy and wanted to know where I lived, but I didn't feel safe telling him. We met up for dinner and it was just weird. He kept saying he could afford the rent, but then he tried to kiss me and made it clear he wanted to have sex. I told him I'd call the cops and he left. Later, I caught him trying to turn on my computer when I wasn't looking. I reported him to Roommates.com, but he was still on the site. I couldn't believe it. Now I only use newspapers to find roommates. It just feels safer to me.
Roommates.com Review: Disappointing Matches and Scams
I gotta say, I'm pretty bummed out about Roommates.com. I was hoping to find a cool new roommate to share my place with, but it didn't quite work out. See, I've got a nine-year-old daughter, and I guess that's a bit of a dealbreaker for some folks. I get it, not everyone wants to live with a kid running around. But even with that in mind, I only got a handful of matches.
Out of those few matches, though, three of them were straight-up scams. I mean, come on. They all claimed to be from the "States," but their writing was terrible and it was pretty clear that English wasn't their first language. Plus, they all had some sob story about a recently deceased father. And then they all sent me this weird list of demands, like I had to sign some documentation sight unseen and send them a security deposit and first month's rent all at once. Oh, and they were all mysteriously unavailable for several months, and none of them had any friends in the area to show me the place. Yeah, right.
One of them even got super defensive when I started asking questions. Like, dude, you won't even show me the place, but you want me to send you money? What's up with that? And then they had the nerve to ask me what was wrong with me for thinking it might be a scam. Uh, maybe because it's a scam?
Anyway, long story short, I had a pretty terrible experience with Roommates.com. I wouldn't recommend it to anyone.
Scammers Galore: My Experience with a Pay-to-Talk Roommate Website
This website where you gotta pay to talk to potential roommates ain't all that great. I mean, you'd think they'd have better security and screening for scammers, right? But nope, 3 outta 4 people I talked to were trying to scam me. And one of 'em almost got me to sign an agreement!
This person sent me fake pictures of the apartment, a long-winded story about its history, and even a picture of an ID that was probably stolen. I almost fell for it, but I did some research and found out that the listing was fake. When I confronted the person, they didn't even bother to reply. And now they got my ID and some personal info, which they could use to scam someone else.
The website tries to act like it's not their fault, that they're just a "billboard" website. But come on, if there's so many scammers on your site, then it IS your problem. You're taking people's money for a service, so you have an obligation to crack down on this stuff. And just deleting their posts after the fact ain't enough. It's like a hotel saying it's not their fault if stuff gets stolen from people's rooms, and that they're just providing shelter. That's some BS.
Overall, this website is trash and doesn't take responsibility for a major issue. Don't waste your money on it.
Roommates website is not safe!
I joined www.roommates.com and soon enough received a message from a person who told me he wanted to rent a room. He seemed quite nice, so we discussed everything and I showed him the room. That guy never paid me and the worst part was that he robbed the room that I gave him! He stole everything what was much or less valuable and disappeared . I already contacted the police. Roommates website is not safe!

As the rating says: "Doesn't get any worse than this. Stay away!". I have been now for days trying to get a refund issued back to my card for a 60 day subscription to their service and they keep on trying to up-sell me...
I've told them many times, but they just don't listen.
Don't waste your time AND MONEY on this site. Now... I want my refund!
I wouldn't recommend this site to anyone
This is the only roommate website I've encountered where I regularly get scammer emails. In fact, the vast majority of my emails have been from scammers in one case from the same one twice after it changed its user name after having been detected. On two occasions after my premium membership expired and I paid the fee again so I could read my email, I checked my email and guess what? Scammers. I really think that in a case such as this some consideration should be given to those who've paid the fee just so they can read their email only to find that it was suppressed by the Fraud Department. This strikes me as highly suspicious. I wouldn't recommend this site to anyone.
Hello,
My name is Jessica and I am one of the Relationship Managers with Roommates.com. This complaint was recently brought to my attention and I wanted to take a moment to address your concerns regarding scammers on the Roommates.com website.
I would first like to apologize for the poor experience you had with the Roommates.com service. Roommates.com strives to provide the best roommate matching service to our members. It is our strong desire to do what we can to ensure that each user comes away satisfied with our service.
With regard to fraudulent users on the site, please understand that our staff work daily to keep Scammers off the site. Our Fraud department works 24/7 in their attempt to locate and ban fraudulent users from the site and we have made many changes to the back end of our service to prevent scammers from being able to create accounts on the site. Unfortunately, because many scammers consider perpetrating fraud as their full-time occupation, they work very hard to appear as legitimate as possible and continuously change tactics in order to get around our precautions. Once a Scammer does make it on the site, it is only a matter of time before we are able to locate and remove them.
With regard to users receiving emails from scammers, when a Scam account is removed from the site by our Fraud Department, any emails they have sent are also automatically deleted. In it's place is a notification that the email has been suppressed by the Fraud Department. These suppression emails do not require payment in order to be read.
If a user does get an email from a scammer or inadvertently pays to read a suppressed email, they can absolutely contact Customer Service in order to request a refund. Roommates.com Customer Service routinely provides refunds to those users who have paid a fee and only received a suppressed email and/or an email from a Scammer.
I was unable to locate an account for you using the information you provided. If you take a moment to contact Customer Service regarding this situation, we would be more than happy to assist you.
Thank you for your time,
Jessica

I was robbed of $2500.00 and there is nothing I can do about it
Scam artist has found the perfect breeding ground for committing fraud. roommates.com is sitting by while honest members are being robbed blindly. I was robbed of $2500.00 and there is nothing I can do about it except to warn unsuspecting people of the scam.
Hello,
My name is Jessica and I am one of the Relationship Manager with Roommates.com. This complaint was recently brought to my attention and I wanted to take a moment to this complaint.
First let me say that I am so sorry to hear about your negative experience while using Roommates.com. It is our strong desire to provide the absolute best roommate matching service available to our members. When an issue arises, we do try to do everything within our power to assist our members so they can leave our service feeling satisfied.
With regard to fraudulent users on the site, please understand that our staff work daily to keep Scammers off the site. I can assure you that Roommates.com does not sit idly by while any type of scam is perpetrated. Our Fraud Department works 24/7 in their attempt to locate and ban fraudulent users from the site. We have made many changes to the back end of our service in order to prevent scammers from being able to create accounts on the Roommates.com website. Unfortunately, for many scammers this is their full-time job and they work very hard to appear as legitimate as possible. They continuously change their tactics in order to get around our precautions. Once a scammer does make it on the site, it is only a matter of time before we are able to locate and remove them. When we remove and ban a user from the site, any emails they have sent to our members are automatically deleted and in its place is a notification that the email has been suppressed by the Fraud Department.
We do understand, however, that Scammers who do make it through onto the website do have an opportunity to attempt to snare an unsuspecting individual. That is why we have a Scam Alert posted on the site. Any member, when logged into their account, can view the Scam Alert by clicking the Scam Alert tab located at the top of the page.
The Scam Alert goes into detail regarding the type of scam being perpetrated on the site and how to avoid the scam. We also provide an email address to contact our Fraud Department if you suspect you have been in contact with a scammer.
Unfortunately, besides our round-the-clock attempt to root out scammers and ban them from the site, the additional programming we have implemented in order to prevent Scammers from accessing the website, the removal of any emails sent by Scammers before they can be read, and the information we provide to our users within the Scam Alert in order for them to protect themselves from fraudulent users, there is not much else that we are able to do.
Again, we ask that if a user feels an individual on the website is fraudulent, to please contact either the Fraud Department through the email provided within the Scam Alert or our main Customer Service email so that we can check the account.
I am sorry to hear of your unfortunate experience and if you have any questions regarding this situation, please do not hesitate to contact our Customer Support.
Thank you,
Jessica

Avoid this place at all costs
The rep from the site said it's free to view and email potential roommates. Untrue. If you've signed on as a freebe, you MUST upgrade to a paid account to view any email sent to you by other members who have attempted to send you emails. My suspicion is that staffers are actually sending emails because the email I received dated 4/20/12 stated in the subject line: "We're a perfect match." Hello? I don't think so.
Hello,
My name is Jessica and I am one of the Relationship Manager with Roommates.com. This complaint was recently brought to my attention and I wanted to take a moment to address the claims made by the complainant.
With regard to your comment that the rep provided untrue information when they said it was free to view and email potential roommates, please let me take a moment to explain.
As a non-paying member, you are able to view profiles of other members, however, certain features of those profiles are only available to paying members. Non-paying members are able to receive messages from other users on the site but an upgrade is necessary to read the messages in their Inbox. If you receive a message from a user and you are a non-paying member, you are more than welcome to view their profile and send them an email. You just are not able to read the email they sent without first purchasing a membership upgrade.
I understand that some individuals may feel this is unfair, however this is simply the way the Roommates.com website is set up. This information is by no means hidden from the public nor do we attempt to confuse people when it comes to understanding what is available for the non-paying paying member versus what is available for the paying member.
If a user has a question about how the Roommates.com website works or what the differences between paying and non-paying members are, they are more than welcome to contact Roommates.com Customer Service and we will be happy to answer any and all questions they may have. Users may also take a moment to read our Terms of Service as this information is contained within that policy as well.
I hope this has answered your questions and if you have any additional questions, please do not hesitate to contact Roommates.com Customer Support.
Thank you,
Jessica

As a paying member, you are subjected to scams
As a paying member, you are subjected to scams. When you turn these scammers in, nothing is done to remove them from the site. Other non-paying members can not view your profile or read your e-mails. If you send an e-mail to complain about the lack of customer service, you will get a rude response telling you to just discontinue use of their service. They will not offer you a refund. They are a waste of money. Don't bother.
