Exterior House Painting
Sharper Impression Painting of Kansas City is untrustworthy, uses deceptive practices and performs unconscionable acts under the direction of their District Manager, Zach Atwell. We advise that you never use Sharper Impression Painting and hire a much more trustworthy and reliable paint contractor.
First, Sharper Impression Painting marketed and contracted their service to apply two-coats of paint to our house exterior. Instead, they provided one-coat of paint claiming it is “their” two-coat process. “Their” process does not meet industry or the paint manufacturer’s standards. Sharper Impression Painting manager stated “the two coat process . . . is a heavy first coat . . . followed by a light top coat/touch up.” This light topcoat was applied while the painter remained on the ladder and within 30 minutes of the first-coat. “Their” two-coat process disagrees with the paint manufacturer‘s technical data sheet and technical staff recommendation; “The coats should be uniform at the same film thickness for both coats. It would not be recommended to apply the first coat heavy; the product could possible not dry correctly.” Also, four hours drying time between coats is typical and recommended by the paint’s technical data sheet. Sharper Impression Painting does not apply two-coats of paint. Deceptive!
Second, Sharper Impression Painting applied the lowest grade paint possible while claiming that they apply a mid-grade paint. While trusting their District Manager as being an honorable person and not knowing the paint manufacturer’s name for their mid-level paint, we signed the contract with only the paint manufacturer stated. Sharper Impression Painting claimed the contractor grade paint (Benjamin Moore, Ultra Spec) fulfilled their quality standards and contract requirements. Misleading and Cheats!
Third, Sharper Impression’s Painting crews are sub-contractors, they are paid by the job and they have their own business and customers. (They took four-weeks to complete a one-week job.) Since Sharper Impressions Painting gets 50% of the contract price and provides no material or labor to perform the work, they will under estimate the job to get the contract. This leaves sub-contractor to adsorb the loss by short cutting work or performing inferior work to make a reasonable earning. For example, their charge to trim windows was very low compared to other contractors. This is in contrast to Sharper Impression Painting claiming that their painting crews are their employees. Liars!
With all of the Sharper Impression Painting deceptive practices, what is the quality and satisfaction of the job’s planning, repairs and painting? Mediocre!
No communications! While we provided the same information to the District Manager/estimator, the color coordinator and the project manager, the paint crew leader, who performed all of the project’s tasks, never received this information. Thus, tasks were done wrong, for example trim colors in several locations. Other tasks had poor workmanship, for example brick molding and sliding repairs. Several issues could not be resolved with Sharper Impression Painting management. To fix some of the poor work, we decided to hire other contractors with more competency and talent to end this nightmare. There was no project management oversight of the job or their sub-contractor paint crew. Without Sharper Impression Painting communicating, planning and overseeing activities led to bad experience and second-rate result!
The painters took an excessive amount of time and had no respect for our property. The painters took four-weeks to complete a one-week job (painters worked five hours, 3 days a week for several weeks during mostly nice weather (2 – 3 days of rain) and never more than 3 days a week, probably had another job). During this four-week period, they left fixtures that they removed from the house (i.e. exterior house lights, hose reels, down spouts, etc.), construction and waste materials and their ladders laying in the yard causing lawn damage and a junky appearance to the property. After picking up some items and informing them that we were going to hire someone to cleanup their mess and charge them, they removed the construction trash and their equipment after the second week. No respect!
The finished product was run-of-the-mill if we discount only one-coat of a commercial grade paint was applied. Windowpanes, air conditioner, wood deck and other items that were not to be painted were not covered and paint spray spots were left on them. We were promised these items would be covered. The windows were scraped but not washed and spots of paint spray remain on the windowpane. We paid for a first-rate paint job but received a second-rate job that will show the inferior work in a few years and requires additional cleanup work involving our time and cost. We will never permit Sharper Impression Painting on our property again! At completion, cleanup activities required!
Misleading service
I own/run a small house painting company. My business was slow so I subcontracted a job for Sharper Impressions. They find the jobs and bid them, then hire painters to do them. Their take is 50% of the bid. Of the other 50% I paid for materials and labor, and the balance would be mine. Outrageous, but I needed work, so I signed their contract and took on a job.
I bought materials for the job on their accounts. The contract stated I would be using Sherwin Williams (a high quality product that I use exclusively) paint, but they said they had switched to Porter paint (an inferior product). Because of this I had to use 16 extra gallons of paint (at $23.00 a gallon), I also had to pay extra in labor because of the extra time it took to triple (!) coat the house, but I stuck with it and finished the job.
When I got paid, I was shorted $246.35. This was in addition the the extra I had to pay for the above mentioned paint and labor. It takes a week to get their checks, and in the meantime I had started another job for them. When I called them about the shortage, they said they would make it up at the end of the current job. They did not. And they will not return my calls.
Since then (about 2 weeks) I have spoken to one other subcontractor that was also shorted over $300.00. I have also discovered that they advertise using Manor Hall Timless Lifetime paint (a good product) and are in actuallity using lower end Manor Hall (inferior product). This is flat out false advertising.
So, to sum it up, Sharper Impressions is not only shorting their subcontractors, but misleading their customers.
I also used this service. They told me they would do a base coat and then paint the walls with two coats. They did not do anything they told me they would do. The paint in one room looks great, until you look really closely.
house peeling
Salesman presented the job well. On the other hand the crew that showed up were not the type of people I prefer on my property, you know foul language tattoos from head to toe that type. There were several problems throughout the project. It has been 18 months since the job was completed and my house is peeling all over. When I called them to get the painting corrected they explained that the warranty would not cover the problem. Since then I had to pay another contractor to repaint the house. Spend your hard earned money elsewhere unless you want to pay twice.

Dishonest; low quality work
I do not know where to even begin with the horrific business practices of Sharper Impressions Painting. They do not do the painting! Sharper subs the job out to a rag-tag crew, which does horrible work. I was promised a powerwash with trisodium phosphate and bleach; yet the powerwash was only water. (I had to show the guy how to start his powerwasher.) The prep workers did not fill in voids, nor did they scrape loose paint. I was also promised the downspouts would be removed for painting, again, not the case.
Moreover, I am a month-out from the promise date of when my home was to be painted. It's always excuse after excuse. (Sick crew, family emergency, paint store problems, paint problem, etc.) Often, someone from the crew (never Sharper) calls and says they'll show-up and then they don't...and you don't hear anything for days. It's a nightmare with this company all around. Lies all around with this company.
I will be filing complaints with the Indiana Secretary of State as well as the Indiana State Attorney General's office.

and they don't pay us some times
I AGREE, LISTEN THIS IS FOR ALL THE CUSTOMERS OF SHARPER IMPRESSIONS PAINTING DON"T TRUST THIS COMPANY THEY USE SUBCONTRACTORS ALL THE TIME AND THEY NEVER HAVE A REGULAR PAINTER, THEY NEVER PAINT THEY ONLY KNOW HOW TO DO SALES AND EXIT. BECAREFUL THIS SUBCONTRACTOR COMPANY HAS TO GO BECAUSE THEY ONLY USE WORKERS FOR ONE O TWO JOBS N FIRE THEN. SOMETIMES THEY DON" T PAY THEN.
did they ask for a deposit?
House Painting
Sharper does not employ any painters. They have several IT staff to make a nice looking website, and competitive bids to win jobs. They often don't even meet the folks they hire to paint your house. Many have never painted before. The folks that came to my house (3 different crews) didn't have the proper equipments or know that scrapping before painting was a good idea. (I'm now waiting for my 4th crew a year later)
You may notice ankle bracelets on some of their painters. There are no background checks done on these folks. They could be rapist and molesters. They are completely unchecked.

Horrible - Unhonest - Rip-Off
I don't even know where to start. I would never do business with them again. I was lied to over and over again. My job turned out terrible. I would NEVER deal with them again. They are not honest. I feel like I was scammed.

I just got scammed by sharper impressions. It is amazing that this company can have the same pattern of behavior since 2009 and still have a good rating with BBB?! I guess they realize that most people won't "google" them ...until its too late.

That's what happens when consumers a fooled by a well dressed salesman, a nice graphic lettered truck, a fancy laptop printed estimate...and then after they have your deposit money that's when the "painters" show up. Unscreened sub-contractors that only get half of the total amount to paint the entire house, and they have to furnish all paint and materials. Needless to say, they will take whatever shortcuts necessary to get the job done as quickly as possible. Good Luck, you'll need it
UNPROFESSIONAL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Well the whole thing starts out with a salesperson showing up at your door. He promises you whatever you want to hear. He says that he will be painting your house. He makes you feel warm and fuzzy. HE SELLS YOU. Then the fun begins. Now that you signed up the circus comes into town. Four hispanic fellows that spoke NO English now are at my door. They have no clue about what my salesperson and I talked about. There is NO WAY that they were legal. Now they start on the house and I don't think they had any clue what they were doing. I asked them to leave before it was too late. They did not put TSp in the power wash as promised. They tried to paint before the house was dry. They didn't tarp everything off as promised. They did not scrape the paint that was flaking. They were going to paint right over it. They did not caulk as I was promised. Now I am going to hire a professional painter. I wish I had checked Sharper Impressions Painting out on the internet before I signed up. I am not the only person that has had a problem with them. I do not recommend that you sign up with this company. I feel like I was tricked. STAY AWAY.

That is the problem with this "type" of painting company. They have a great marketing machine, great presentation, nice looking well dressed salesman, and a laptop and printer that give you an estimate complete with a picture of YOUR house on it. Notice that they never talk about their painters in specifics, or mention the word employee. That is because they subcontract ALL their work to guys who only need a pulse and a van with ladders to get a job. Be very careful who you hire!
Screwed Over

hahahahaha SHARPER BAD IMPRESSIONS IS A BAD COMPANY THEY USE SUBCONTRACTORS WITHOUT EXPERIENCE, AND WITHOUT INSURANCE, IS NOT 50/50 SPLIT THATS A BIG LIE, THE SUBCONTRACTOR HAS TO PROVIDE OPERATIONAL MATERIAL AND BUY THE PAINT
THAT LEAVES THE SUB- WITH 35% OF WHAT HE HAS TO PAY EMPLOYEES THATS A JOKE, THE SUB ISN'T MAKING ENOUGH PAINTING A WHOLE HOUSE FOR LITTLE MONEY, IS NOT FAIR, THAT'S THE REASON WHY SUBCONTRACTORS MAKE SLOPPY JOBS AT PEOPLE HOUSES.. ADVICE FOR HOME OWNERS DO NOT HIRE SHARPER RIP OFF COMPANY
This company does not stand behind what they advertise. They have District Managers that are un-qualified and then pass the additional costs on to their customers when the Job comes up short and they cannot deliver on the contract. Their customer service is horrific - they do not return calls or address issues in a timely manner. Stay away - it is not worth it.

I have worked for Sharper and Jeff Sapp off and on for 5 years. And for the most part they are a good company.Hell i jus finished a job today that had a customer that seemed like he was looking for any thing to [censor] about. Some customers you just cant please. It is a 50-50 split, THEY HAVE TO MAKE MONEY TOO!IF YOU DONT LIKE IT GO FIND YOUR OWN JOBS.They have never encouraged me to cut corners at all.Its business, sometimes there are going to be problems but as far as i know And what i have witnessed with my own eyes they stand by their word.
TREY
Sharper Impressions actually operates in 10 regions. They are crooked from the top to the bottom. Indianapolis is the area that I know of. Danis has it right...they are [censor]. I hope that Geoff Sharp cannot sleep at night knowing how he has treated people.
Sharper operates in two places. The group in the Kansas City area takes a great deal of short cuts and does not stand by their work. They often hire inexperienced painters with no insurance.
They do not have any painters on staff. All are sub-contracted and it is a complete roll of the dice who and what type you may get. Most are no good.
They usually have one good crew that gets tasked with fixing the mistakes and sloppy work of the others.
The real problem is Ty Johnson. He tells these contractors to cut corners. Look at the BBB complaints and you will see.
What out for their contract. In the past two years, all the contracts I've seen claim that they are BBB certified. While that was true until August of 2008, they are no longer certified and they can be sued for misrepresentation and false advertising.
Do not use SharperImpressions -- Stay away
I hate Sharper Impressions, they are like pit bulls who have been treated badly. At first they are cute then you give them a chance and they will get you. They are the most dishonest and money hungry company I have ever came across. I know they don't treat their customers right and the way they treat their sub contractors is shameful. I'm telling you they have no respect and all they want is your money and they don't care about anything else. The people who were happy with the job that was done must have been because they had good painters because Sharper Impressions are ###.
I have been doing subcontracting work for this companey for the last 6 monthes, and yes it has kept me from starving. But in the same time it has also caused me to do some of the most short cutting and sloppy painting I have ever done, because of the 50%split after subtracting materials.I have a new born baby to feed, so I gotta do whatever it takes. This company is designed for illegals who find the pay to be good enough for them. You also dont have to really have to have insurance or workmans comp.Anyways they are a dishonest company with far from 100% paint jobs.Isn't life grand...
I just typed a thorough rebuttal to Greg's comments, and it got deleted. I don't feel like retyping it. Just know that there are more than a few customers/contractors who are excessively unhappy with the unethical and dishonest dealings we've had with this company. Most customers assume that this "professional" company is doing a good job, and they don't evaluate the work. The company bends over backwards, but it's not to help their customers (at least not after they take your money).
Just consider yourself forewarned. If you want to roll the dice with this company, go for it. But you'd probably be better off hiring some neighborhood kids. The honor this company exemplifies is as reliable and useful as a flat tire in the middle of the Mojave.
I have worked for Sharper Impressions painting for 8 years and they have always treated me with respect and i have found them a very good company to do business with.
With a large Company and alot of employees to hire, occasionally you will have a painter who is not efficient and has a hard time finishing a job in a timely manner and thus feels the need to complain about whatever it might be to make him feel justified. From my own experience in dealing with hundreds of their jobs over the years the claim of any kind of "inferior" paint is not true.
If Sharper does have a problem with a painter or a specific home the management team has always bent over backwards to rectify the problem, although there are some people in this world who you couldnt make happy even if God showed up to paint their Home.
In my opinion for every complaint (and every company around has to deal with them in the best possible way) There are probably 1000 very satisfied customers.

Rip Off
There is nothing good about this company. They do not even paint. They sub out every job they trick homeowners into. They run out a nicely dressed salesperson. Then, once you sign with them, they send out whatever un-screened painter they hired that week off of craigs list. I would not recommend dealing with them. They will scam you. Name another painting company that does not even have a painter on staff. STAY AWAY
The complaint has been investigated and resolved to the customer’s satisfaction.
They send out a salesperson who says they will be doing the job. Then, after you sign, they send out an un-screened sub-contractor to do the work. They are not professional. They are a rip-off. Stay away! There are too many honest companies out there. Companies that WILL back up their work.
Please submit complaints to www.bbb.org, where it will make a difference.
i have a neighbor that used to sub contract for them and tbrown is correct. they will promise more coats of paint then they actually use. they also will charge you for high end paint and then get you the cheapest possible paint. they are ususlly very dishonest people(i know not ALL of them are) that are just out to make a buck
This complaing is unfounded and most likely filed by a disgruntled contractor.
I worked for this company and yes they use sub-contractors for all there jobs. The sad part is they dont even care about who they use. They dont have a painter on there staff. I had to wait for months to get paid by these cowards and they still owe me over eight hundred dollars. The subs do all the work, but sharper get s all the credit. Another thing is they underbid the jobs by at least 1000 dollars because they make the subs pay for all material. This place is a joke, every house i did for them which was about 35 jobs, the homeowner would ask me if Im a sub and they said if they knew that they used subs they would of never called them. they all lie and say they put on two coats well its really only one..Because the sub is not going to spend that extra money for very little pay. They spend all this money on advertising, get all this work then sub everything out to druggies, alcholics, criminals.. They should at least do background checks on the people they use. I wouldn't want a criminal that just got out of prison inside my house.. I hope you find this helpful... Terry Brown from columbus ohio says thank you...

Myself
This company does not even employ a single painter. They send out a nicely-dressed salesperson to sell you on the job. They even say that they will be painting the job. Then they run out un-screened "professional" painters to show up at your door. Alot of the sub-contractors do not speak English. Quite a few are not even legal aliens. Stay away from this company. It is not worth it.

Zack for Sharper Impressions came out 11/12/15 to provide an estimate to paint my one story ranch house. I had already painted the front. It slopes slightly to the back and I wanted someone to paint the two sides and the back. In the back is an aluminum awning that covers a basement door. I told Zack I had purchased enough paint to do the whole job with two coats of (quality) paint. Zack said he would not feel comfortable having someone up on the awning. I told him that what scaffolding is for. Zack said he doesn't have such scaffolding and refused to do any of the work at all. The house has been painted before, and I paid someone to paint it several years ago, and they had no problem painting over the the awning. I think the reason may be that the job was too small and I was providing the paint, so the room for potential profit was small. I do not recommend this company.
