StreetEasy is a really good website for finding a place to live. I found my current apartment on there more than 5 years ago, and I'm using it again now to look for a new place. You can search by price, neighborhood, and different things like if there's an elevator or a doorman. Most of the listings have pictures, the exact apartment number, and a map to show you where it is (which is really important in New York City). The website also tells you if the apartment is a condo, coop, or something else, and if there's a fee you have to pay to the broker.
Sometimes the listings aren't totally accurate, though. Some of them are for apartments that aren't really available anymore, and they're just there to get people to call the real estate company. (If a listing has been up for a few days, it's probably already rented out.) But I've found that I get more responses when I use StreetEasy to contact the real estate agents than when I use their own websites. Sometimes I even get multiple agents calling me back about the same apartment!
