On November 25th I went into the UPS store to return a package using the digital phone label that the company texted. The package belonged to my son who was out of the country and didn't have the time to do it himself before leaving. (This was the last day the return could be made.) The return consisted of two boxes. The clerk scanned the label and told me the return was only for one box. I explained to him that the boxes came as a pair. He showed me where on the bottom of the shipping label that it stated only one package. I tried to reach my son repeatedly (who was in Europe) by cell phone, only to get a busy signal. Considering there was a deadline looming, I decided to ship one box and worry about the other box later. While walking back to the car, I noticed that in the top right corner the receipt said the weight was 90.9 lbs. Although each box was extremely heavy, I knew that one box did could not weight almost 100 lbs. I returned with the other box and brought it to the cashier's attention. The cashier who initially assisted me was a young man. I showed him the receipt at which point he retrieved the package and saw his mistake. He told me that there was a $5.00 charge to tape the two packages together. I assume he was a new employee because an older female overhearing the conversation criticized him (in front of customers) for doing a transaction that he was not trained for. Since it was only 3PM I suggested that I would tape the packages myself. I was told that it was not possible because the shipping label had been attached to the first package and couldn't be removed and there was also a strapping machine that was needed to pair the two boxes together. There were time constraints involved so I paid the $5.00. What annoyed me most about this situation was not the $5.00 charge but the berating of the young man in front of customers. To add insult to injury no one even apologized for the store's mistake. Professionalism needs to be taught at this location. I am also a small business owner and use the UPS facility 5 minutes away from this location. As stated earlier there were time constraints involved and it is usually busy at the facility this time of day and I thought that it would be quicker to use the store.
