Hi, my name is Robin Kannel and I have been the Asst. Manager at store #21568 in Plum City, WI since July of 2022. I feel I was wrongfully let go on Monday, April 24,2023. I was put on suspension on Tuesday, April 18,2023 with out any paperwork given to me or was not given a date I could return to work. I was told I was being suspended for marking things down that were discontinued or clearanced out. After I had tried reaching out to several people on Friday, April 21,2023 and left several messages. Surprisingly I finally got a call from our District Manager (Michelle Thalman) and she told me I could not return to work.
This last big 3 day sale we were suppose to have, we were unable to as our store was closed down for 5 days due to our register system totally crashing due to condensation getting in the wires from a leaky roof which I had turned in a repair order with ERC way back on January 22, 2023. It kept leaking and I also updated that on the ticket and still nothing was fixed till the system totally crashed. If ERC would have sent someone to fix the leak the system would have never crashed and the store would have not lost 5 days worth of revenue and we would have been able to have that big three day clearance sale and we would have been able to get rid of alot! This store is not even three years old and we were going to be on manager #9. To me that should speak volumes that there is a problem. For the longest time there has been pretty much only two of us employees that were there every day to keep the store open for the community. In our handbook it specifically says that we are to get our breaks, take our lunches and never to close the store at night alone. Well we haven't been getting breaks, lunches and having to close by ourselves for a very long time. Our Dollar General lights on both sides of the building and the big one by the highway have not worked for a very long time. The other regular outside lights on the building are on during the day instead of at night. So it is very dark and unsafe for one person to be there alone at night. There has been a work order put in for that since January 22,2023 as well. Being one of the two main employees for how long that have tried reaching out several times to our District Manager Michelle and the Regional Manager Bob with no call backs ever. We were pretty much left on our own to run the store. I have tons of proof on my phone that I have texted and called Michelle on several occasions with no responses back. Then I have called the Regional Manager and left messages and no call backs were ever made.
Michelle had stopped in one day and I specifically asked her if our store could extend that sale as we were not able to have that sale due to the negligence of upper management not keeping on them to fix the problem that caused us to be closed for 5 days. She said she was going to look into it and ask and get back to us and again we never ever heard back from her. I also asked if us employees could still use our 30% off that we were unable to use due to the store being closed down and never received an answer on that either. I can't emphasize enough how Dollar General was my life. I worked so hard in the time I was there to try and get things cleaned up, priced right and get it organized. There is probably 40 plus totes in the back room that are full of discontinued and clearanced items that alot of them have been there since I started. I'm sure there is even expired items in there that have to be thrown away now instead of it getting sold. There is also approximately 8 roll containers of $! items that have been there since I started. It was frustrating as us two employees were going totally out of our way to keep the store open and making revenue and never getting the calls back that we deserved but yet are getting repromanded for doing what we thought was right. Now the fire marshall has been visiting the store and the store was closing during the day for awhile to get stock put away so it's not a fire hazard. There is sooo much more that the owners of this company need to be aware of. All I was trying to do is better the store and keep it open for the community. I appreciate your time and would greatly appreciate a call back. I think every employee deserves to at least be heard. If you need other employees are willing to voice their concerns as well. Thank you!
Desired outcome: I would greatly appreciate my job back. I enjoyed my job. There was just such a lack of no communication from upper management and I think in the end the employees/stores are the ones that end up suffering from it.
