Bugs, Problems, and More Bugs
I have been using Wattpad for two years now. I love the app and so many things about it but there are so many problems with the app. First of all, the new update. I think everyone here agrees that the new update is crap.
The layout is confusing and super annoying:
The layout for this app is so bad. After you read a story and want to go back to your homepage, you have to keep pressing the darn arrow on the top left hand corner. Maybe Wattpad should include a button where is can take you back to the homepage without pressing the back button repeatedly. At first, it wasn’t so bad. But after a few months, it starts to get super annoying.
The ADs
Don’t get me wrong. I understand why there are ads on this app. The developers need to earn money to give us the ability to access free books but...the ADS WILL NOT LOAD. I don’t know if it’s just me but when it says that an app is loading, I have to sit there for 5 minutes waiting for the ad to load. When it doesn’t load, it doesn’t let me continue on the book so I have to refresh the app. I have done this countless times and the new update has just made this problem a lot worse
Stories will not load:
I have my own stories in Wattpad but I am not able to access them. Which is really bad because in Wattpad, you basically write or read. If I can’t write, then my readers can read...so I think you see the problem here.
Search Engine:
Holy mother of god, do not get me started with the search engine. The search engine on this app is crap. It’s really crap. Even after applying filters to the search engine, you still have to sift through hundreds of stories just to find the one you are looking for. It doesn’t matter how popular the book is. The Wattpad search engine will not let it show up. For people experiencing this problem, I recommend to search (Wattpad...story name/author) on safari or on the google search engine. It works sooooo much better than the Wattpad one. It’s kind of funny that these search engines work better than Wattpad’s.
In conclusion, these new “updates” Wattpad has continuously had over these past few months have made the app so much worse. The layout has changed several times confusing many people. Instead of decreasing the amount of bugs on the app, the developers have some how found a way to increase the amount. These bugs are at slowly piling up creating a mess and destroying the user’s overall experience. I’ve come a long way with Wattpad. It has helped me go through many things and I am always grateful for the developers who take the time to make this app but I am also extremely disappointed. What used to be a place to escape has become a messy heap of bugs and problems. These problems will only add on overtime until the app finally collapses. I hope the developers see this and take this all into consideration. Thank you for your time and I hope you fix these mistakes!
Elitist Alienation of your users
So where do I even start?
Paywalls?
ARE YOU SERIOUS.
This is the beginning of the end for wattpad readers. They are alienating there core user base with paywall and coins. Not only do they want these mostly young people to pay upwards of $7 for these books but they are peddling it was this great new idea.
The first thing they say when you tell them that this is a bad idea is that there are “hundreds of millions of other books that are free on Wattpad.” Only problem is that if this whole beta program succeeds then they will do more and more and more until this app is no longer free and is just another book store. They will probably even charge people write their books for “priority” views. This is just beginning of the end I’m telling you guys it is over. What wattpad and the writers who participate in this program don’t get is it’s the principle of the matter, it’s not how many books are being charge for, it’s about the fact that we don’t want to see degrading coin systems on our front pages when we open our app and that we don’t want to see that something cost money to read when all we want to do is escape this horrible greed filled world.
I have been on Wattpad for years both as a reader and a writer. I understand that writers want recognition for there works but this isn’t the way. I would be happier throwing my money into a fire than to support this program. They are not warning readers in the description that 5 chapters into a book there will be a paywall. It feels like a cheap trick and is disheartening that the writers would stoop so low.
If a donation system was available for free books for everyone that was fair I would be happy to give them support but this is uncalled for.
Not only are you asking for people to pay but you are charging book store prices if I wanted to pay for a book I would go to Amazon. These writer who signed up for this program are feeding into elitist ideals. If you want to publish a book officially do it but don’t have a Wattpad account.
Most of the people on this app don’t have the funds nor means to pay for nor access books outside of Wattpad and other free programs. This classism will separate our community into rich and poor and will make kids steal money from there parents just to read books that were previously free. Wattpad was not only book source but a safe space and they are ripping it away.
Its disappointing that you couldn’t find a way to help your writers while also keeping the integrity of the app.
Also you’ve completely screwed up your notification system I get tons of notifications that I do not need nor do I want, I can’t even see if someone has liked my writing or has left me a comment because I’m too busy scrolling through all these meaningless bulletins.
To all reading this. This is the beginning of the end of free content. Youtube did it, hulu did it, now Wattpad. So basically if you are poor or young sorry but they don’t care about you.
wattpad is just digging their own grave
in regards to the new “wattpad” beta program.
please bring old wattpad back
i’ve been using wattpad for about 4-5 years now and i love it. it’s a great way to read stories from people all over the globe and give your own advice to the authors so they can grow, and not having to SPEND ANY MONEY BY DOING THIS. recently wattpad has been trying to use ads to give writers income, which i believe is false because i am a writer of a book with a fairly good amount of views; and i have never been contacted for anything about being payed. now wattpad has the genius idea of now making readers pay to read a book. and even if they some how were i know that they are taking majority of the income. having to pay to read on a FREE reading app is frustrating. like the ads were annoying but whatever i can live, then the notifications of people posting on their activities and then this crap. ugh i just want to go back to a couple of years ago were you could read offline, there were barely any adds, and you could actually read a book in its entirety. they better change this soon cause they are making a really bad decision and people aren't gonna read others books then.
like okay i’m reading this information that wattpad has posted when you go to your profile. basically it’s saying that the readers should pay the writers to help their growing careers, which personally think is bs. if someone posts writing on a free writing app, then readers should be able to read it. like no one was complaining when writers were growing by writing and sharing their works out to readers, without having to pay for publishing and without the readers having to pay.
not just this but in the writer section they state, “Readers have long been requesting a way to support their favorite writer” which i think is a good idea, but there are other ways to do it. making it an option to support a writer is amazing. like for example, you don’t have to pay to subscribe to a yourtuber. but you can show your support in income by buy merch or donating. but let’s be honest this is going to extremely decrease the amount of readers on books. i know wattpad is going to be taking that majority of that money. just go back to the bs with the “were paying the writers by showing this ad on their book” or something. this doesn’t benefit anyone expected wattpad, and they are soon gonna realize that they made a bad choice cause people are going to be tired of spending their money that’s not even going to go to the author.
oh i also want to add if you are a writer and you are thinking about/have already set up coins on your books, please reconsider. many are going through financial struggles and won't be able to read your books. if you want a lot of feedback on your writings then please think about possibly making a patreon, or some sort of place that readers can willingly donate to. i understand that it is the writers choice but please understand it is frustrating for the readers to not be able to read you books and enjoy them.
thank you and i hope this mistake is changed soon :)
Please stick to your audience
Let’s start with the good: Wattpad is a free app. It lets you publish stories to be discovered, an interesting feature to young writers. It lets you read stories for free, amazing. It has a pretty good user interface and is relatively easy to use (except one small issue mentioned later). My favorite feature has got to be the demographics feature when you’re writing to see what countries people are reading your book, the gender distribution of your readers, and how many comments and ‘favorites’ or Wattpad likes each chapter has. I really like Wattpad in general, but it has really gone downhill lately.
Look, I don’t normally complain about paid subscriptions or even ads in reasonable numbers, but Wattpad is seriously money-grubbing at this point.
I understand paid stories. I get it. It makes sense. What doesn’t make sense is your sudden desire to get me to subscribe to a service that wasn’t even available a year ago. Wattpad premium is not too expensive for someone who has a job... it’s 5.99 USD/month. It is expensive for the majority of your audience, by which I mean literal children. For Pete’s sake, I used to be able to read an unlimited amount of stories offline, an amazing feature that was removed. Look, I don’t exactly have regular internet access or data connection and I don’t need unlimited amounts of stories offline either, because I understand where people will just turn off internet to read without ads. I still would like to have more than TWO, though. That’s not enough for anyone. And I’m not paying 6 bucks a month to someone who thinks otherwise.
I don’t know what kind of moderation you have on this app, but I’ve accidentally stumbled across some very interesting sights that shouldn’t be shown to the kids who make up your target demographic. There’s also excessive swearing. When I say excessive, I do mean EXCESSIVE. And lots of it is done and read by 13-year-olds, or people even younger because Wattpad age restrictions are barely followed. Normally I care very little about swearing but when there are so many curse words that if the book were a movie it’d be too much to even be rated R and it’s not flagged as mature, I doubt very much that you check your content at all.
I’ve recently encountered a little issue with the actual interface, as well. When you show me an ad, which is WAY more frequent than it used to be, I have a hard time closing it out without accidentally scrolling to the beginning of the book. Please fix this.
And it’s also nice when every ad isn’t worms (“nicotine”) crawling into someone’s brain in an anti-vaping ad. Yeah. That’s been way too frequent for me. Just show crummy mobile games like everyone else and leave the anti-drug PSAs to someone else, like YouTube. I don’t need to be horrified by worms traveling through someone’s bloodstream every other chapter when I’m trying to read a book.
Look. Your main audience is teenagers who are trying to read error-ridden, fluffy fanfiction or romance written by other teenagers. Stick to your audience with the ads, the paid subscription stuff, and the content moderation.
Love it, read if you want to download
If you’re new and considering downloading Wattpad, read this for some info. To start - I’ve had this app for a few months, I remember coming across it while looking for a reading app. After tons of different tries, I couldn’t find an app that I liked. After reading a bunch of reviews, I downloaded this, and haven’t ever regretted it.
This app is AMAZING, it doesn’t just let you read stories, it lets you comment on them, ‘vote’ on them, react to them, and write your own. Not just that, but I’ve met SO MANY nice people, and made TONS of online friends.
Usually I don’t make friends like that, but I’ve noticed where normally online I can’t be myself, but on Wattpad, everyone’s also a bit weird, just like we all are, and people are SUPER nice, and aren’t afraid to be themselves. Just look at the comments! Voting is to show you loved a certain chapter, you can do that by pressing the star at the end of the chapter. Reactions is how you felt at a certain line. Keep in mind: these things are all optional!
Another thing, which I mentioned before, is you can comment, ‘vote’, and react to stories and certain lines. You can comment suggestions or just plain reactions, and make tons friends in the comment section, just like I have. I’ve come out of my shell after downloading Wattpad, so much so that I’ve even started writing my own book. After seeing so many people reach their lifelong goals, I thought I would too.
And that brings me to the next thing about Wattpad: the stories. You can write your own, and read things from fan fiction (my personal favorite, I’m a proud Slytherin), real, published books, ones made just for fun, and explore tons of different generes. The best thing is that there are SO MANY different types of books on here, I LOVE how I ALWAYS find different types of stories everyday.
And for writing books: the app makes it SUPER EASY to organize your chapters, name them, and has a ton of fonts (I don’t know how that helps, I just like fonts), and it’s not that hard to get your story viewed. I’ve been writing since I got this app, and even though there have been a lot of reviews about the app crashing, I haven’t had that problem.
This app is honestly addicting, you’ll end up both crying, laughing, shouting murder statements, dying of laughter on the floor, and so much more (that’s what reactions are for).
I would HIGHLY recommend downloading this app. If you’ve come across this, DOWNLOAD IT. YOU WILL NOT REGRET IT.
And now a suggestion: It’s about liking comments. There are a lot of these, saying that there should be a feature that allows you to like comments, and I couldn’t agree more. The only thing I disagree with is I would NOT recommend sorting the comments by the most liked. I find that when you do that, only the top two comments are seen, and you can’t meet people like that.
But liking a comment is a DEFINITE suggestion. It’s nice to just like someone’s comment if you don’t feel like replying, or don’t have anything to say, if you like their comment.
Ty if you made it to the end, I wrote way too much (I have no regrets though, there’s a lot to say), but idc

WATTPAD HACKED
I know this is late but in about July , my wattpad was acting up. Nothing too serious though so i thought it was my phone being wack as usual but then i got an email from wattpad that ‘some of their user data has been improperly accessed’ or whatever nice way you guys tried to put it. I was hacked, y’all. Hacked with a capital H.
I did a little investigation of my own and I found out my email was compromised. Have you no shame wattpad. Framing it as some kind of minor issue but anyways not the point.
I changed my password did some more stuff to protect my email and all was cool again in the world of wattpad. Except-
Yes, plot twist.
I wasn’t allowed back into my account after i logged out! Can you hear my cries of frustration from wherever you are. This happened on both on the app itself and the website.
Now at first I thought it was me being dumb and forgetting my password for both my old accounts so i cried about my lost accounts, made a new one and moved on. Rest in peace old accounts.
But you know what i didn’t forget my password, wattpad! Because recently my friend told me the same thing happened to her account. Locked out after logged out! And her account is about as old as mine! Logging in was perfectly fine until you got hacked!
Another friend with an account confirmed that he went through this struggle too!
Now in that email y’all sent, you said you were m ‘taking immediate actions to fix all the issues’ and i’m not an english expert or anything but 6 months without fixing this issue is not immediate!
And I know you saw other people complaining. Y’all are one of the best reading apps and you better sit up and live up to the name we’ve created for you or you’re gonna lose it.
Since last year everytime i come to the reviews section m, it’s people expressing disappointment after disappointment.
I’m a wattpad veteran and i just want y’all to know that all of us on wattpad just want to read. That’s all we want. That’s why we downloaded the app. Not because we want to admire all these style updates you’re making to the app. I want y’all to know that we don’t care if we can change our wattpad theme to purple or yellow or green if we can’t read :/
Updates are supposed to make an app better but it only makes this app worse. I remember crying after my phone updated my wattpad to that only two offline books update. Y’all were cruel for that. Y’all are cruel for keeping that.
It still hurts to think about it. My friend swore never to update her wattpad after reading the reviews here of that one update. Is this who y’all have become?
Trying to squeeze money out of us.
Have y’all realised that if we had the money to buy books half of us wouldn’t be using a free reading app?
But that’s besides the point, i know y’all don’t care. It’s all about the money these days.
If you take away our books and our privelege to access books what even is this app.
Anyways, I’d really appreciate feedback on how to access my accounts that got hacked again if that isn’t too much trouble, thanks.
Follow me @jodstarlove y’all i can’t access it but maybe wattpad will work some magic.
The New and Improved (or not) Wattpad - Bots used for Support
Update 9/13
Since when did you feel it was okay to send notifications ads to me. The only notifications I should ever have is ones on my stories. But you sent a notification on a “New LGBTQ+” story. I don’t like those stories let alone want to get notifications on new ones. You’ve crossed a line here.
Luckily, I can turn you off through iPad settings and plan to do the same with your newly underhanded platform and business model that is sucking the life out of Wattpad. It’s a disgrace what you have done to the members and readers at Wattpad. You replaced loyal readers for writers that can bring you money. Shame on you.
*Update8-31-20
So I’ve been trying to get back into writing and I thought maybe it was me that was holding me back. But it’s not, it’s you. I opened this Wattpad app and what I see is everything that made Wattpad special, gone. I warned you (see original post below). You have become an unusable platform, unlikable app, and alienated many, many people. You are progressing this website and app out of what made Wattpad the place for anyone to go. You are now officially selling books by authors who have already published their books in multiple places like Amazon. Congratulations, you are not a free reading and writing site or app any more. And soon, just like Ellora’s Cave and other publishing houses, you will no longer exist.
Ads are atrocious now. No one’s going to pay for this. And I feel extremely put off when an image I used gets flagged and removed because it was deemed offensive. No nudity/violence or gore but it’s flaggedand removed without a conversation about what’s so offensive about it.
E-mails are sent to me but when accessed, something goes wrong with it. It’s font is blown up that it won’t completely appear in the e-mail. So that means that it contains no actual e-mail but one extremely large WA. This also goes for the MESSAGE section in the app. I tap on the person who sent me something and it gives me no message at all, only a black/gray nothingness. All the messages are like that.
And on another note. Bots used in support is dumb and noticeable. I asked a question multiple times and got the exact (word for word) reply back that didn’t answer the question. You’re product is a piece of cr*p now. Way to go, you’re brilliant. Needs new management with common sense.
Hard to navigate the app now.
*** Original ***
I’ve been with Wattpad for 7 years so I can honestly tell you that your current Coin program is shameful. I am also a Goodreads member so I can tell you that your new system will not go as you may hope. Whoever did your newest “Business” model needs to be fired because if I know one thing, readers HATE serial stories. Just look at them on Amazon. Read the millions of reviews for those stories that people peddle out three chapters at a time. 2.) No one, and I mean no one likes paying for incomplete books. Self publishers often forgo the money for an editor and it shows. NO ONE likes to pay for something that needs assembling and I can promise you, the stories here are not edited by professionals.
I’m very disappointed with you. You’ve become the Angry Birds’ crony, money grabbing, company. You’ve gotten to big for for you ego. Your once loved app for those who just wanted to write and be heard has become the Stephanie Meyers of free expression.
Shame on you. Shame on you. I curse you. And I hope your Progressive greediness comes back to smack you in your faces.
Beta program, poisoning Wattpad
So I’ve been on Wattpad since my friend showed me it in middle school-which makes me a member for over 8 years now. I read my first book on here in one sitting and got like 3 hours of sleep that night because of it. I’m a reader, I love it, it helps relieve some stress, and helps me not focus on my own life for an extended period of time. I was so happy when I found Wattpad because I enjoy reading so much but never had the money to read to my hearts content to buy books all the time. To this day my friend has an immense amount of satisfaction from the fact that she showed me this app because she knows how much I’m on it. There are a lot of stories on this site and it’s become a place where writer can be successful, as we’ve seen from the movies and tv shows that have been made from these stories. I’ve witnessed it all; I’m pretty sure I’ve read half of the content on Wattpad. I’ve navigated through the app when it didn’t have ads anywhere and I don’t mind those now since they pay the authors that write such good stories. I’m aware that there is an upgrade that you can get to avoid those that you have to pay for, which is fine because you can continue on with the experience just fine and NOT HAVE to pay. It’s just an option. But now there are so many stories that are being placed under the Beta program where you HAVE TO pay for coins in order to read the story. This is my issue. This is a platform that is completely based on FREE stories. FREE. I understand the want to pay authors for their work. I’ll watch all the ads for that if I think the story is good enough and I don’t have to pay anything. I am continually disappointed when I go to look for more stories to add to my library and see beta program in the description or in an authors note with chapters locked after the first however many. I’m sure wattpad programming is pushing those stories as recommendations in order to make money, which is one of the reasons why it’s so annoying. I’ve seen so many stories that have that posted in an authors note with hundreds of comment saying they won’t be reading that story anymore because it’s in this program and they’re not willing to pay for it. That’s cutting the authors reading numbers down so much but I’m sure they probably don’t care because they’re getting paid for it. This program has been in place for a while now and it’s really pissing people off, but I guess that doesn’t matter when you’re money hungry and reaping the benefits. Never mind the fact that you probably have kids on here who have no way of making money to pay to read stories other than asking for money from their parents. I could pay for it if I was dumb enough but I know not to waste my money on that because you’d have to continue buying coins in order to read stories on a site that was based ON FREE STORIES. Plenty of people who’ve written on here are getting published and are getting paid for their work, there’s no need to make the people who’ve made the site and stories so popular pay in order to use the app for something that’s always been free. I think I’m one of the ones who is more annoyed because I’ve had the app for so long and have seen the progression, but I know as a fact that other people are mad about it because I’ve seen the comments with hundreds of people complaining about it but Wattpad has done nothing to fix it. I’m sure I could come up with more to say but this has turned into more of a rant instead of an actual review. So congrats if you’ve made it this far, prepare to have lots of patience if you want this app. It probably won’t get any better.
Had It For A Long While Small Minor Problems
Let me tell you that this app is addictive. I love reading and writing, and I love funny people. When you put these two together, you get a loud, but technically silent library of internet. I really have enjoyed seeing the comments of other people, some make me laugh, some give me information and good opinions about the story, and some are little stories of their own. There are hateful people on here, (as someone who is apart of the LGBT community it’s been hard dealing with these people sometimes) but everyone is mostly great writers and hilarious comedians.
I have learned the tips and tricks of the internet here, it was like a librarian and a library as the same being. Sure the ads get annoying, and the people get annoying, and some books aren’t the most kind, but you can really learn and grow as a reader, writer, and more on here. People has been so active fandom wise, and I’ve met good friends on here.
But here are the minor issues. No app is perfect, but I’d prefer to mention these to future Wattpadders.
-Announcements, comments, you bio, and story descriptions are restricted to 2000 characters. This feature has its reasons, but maybe bump is up to 2500?
-You cannot copy and paste things into your comments. You cannot pasts things into your comments, learned this when I tried to paste something on a story I’m quite fond of.
-Teenfic. Wattpad hasn’t been protecting it’s writers from the notorious Teenfic. Teenfic is a site with tons of bugs that has been outright copying writer’s hard work without Wattpad or the individual writer’s permission.
-You cannot respond to comments with swearing or bad words. This app is rated 17+ and has a viewer discretion. Why does Wattpad consider comments with cuss words, “Not safe”? I get that people are uncomfortable with cuss words, but there should be a censoring feature if that’s why the comments are like that.
-The image restriction. You can only post so many images, which makes me kind of sad.
-Your private messages to people get erased if too many are sent. Not all of them, but the earliest messages are deleted. None of these are archived, or stored, so you can’t get them back. I’ve lost so many roleplays to that, and it’s frustrating when I try to find old OCs.
-Wattpad is very glitchy. From random followers, to comments not being sent. (Not internet issues, your connection is fine. Wattpad has to get used to you before it registers your comments.)
-No collaborations. This means that you can’t write with other accounts on this app. I know it’s probably because you can’t trust everyone on the internet, but what about people you actually know? You can’t just hand them your email or something. Or you could make it very careful, like make it so you know who wrote what and make hosts or team leaders, and the entire team have the ability to kick people, but the host has to have their complaint pass. It would be a lot of fun. There would be some bumps, again you can trust anyone on the internet, but I think if you put safety precautions then it could be an amazing feature that not a lot of other social media’s have.
-The emojis. Please I want to write a smiley face without having an emoji pop up.
-Ads. Ads are everywhere, period. You can also pay for premium, (which isn’t too expensive) but most people on here can’t.
-When you get a notification for your announcements, it doesn’t automatically take you to that specific announcement. This one made me scroll forever.
I will update this when I remember more problems. But other than what is above, it is an amazing app for socializing and reading and writing. 5/5
I love it, but it changed and isn’t ideal.(?)
I love the app and I’ve been using a lot.
So I write on both my phone and my iPad. And this isn’t supposed to be like a bad review. I love the app and all, it’s just like, something’s changed and there are things that would be cool, or nice to add.
So, when I was writing on my iPad, I had full screen and all, right? But ever since the update, when I write on my iPad, it’s just a small box. A small screen to write in, and I’m not too fond of it. Also on my phone when I write, with the new update, when I scroll up to review my work, do some edits, check the last save time, I accidentally slide out of the writing/chapter. Like it just slides me out and I’m no too fond of that. It gets really annoying. And I understand it was probably added for efficiency , when exiting the chapter or something, but it still messes me up and annoys me.
But, things I think would be neat to add, are something like a grammar and/or spelling check for the writing. So, I’m not a writer who’s at a pro level, so sometimes when I write I mean one things than another, or I’m thinking too much on what I’m trying to say I miss typing some words or I don’t finish typing the word out. Like “playing,” I end up typing “play” and don’t realize that I have forgotten to add the -ing ending.
So when I’m done writing, I skim back and preview it, seeing some-several mistakes of all sorts, so if there was a way, or a program to look over your writing and then point out spelling and grammar mistakes, run-offs, suggestions, etc, that would be awesome.
Something else I wish was a thing, is the ability to see who commented what, where they commented, and be able to reply and such, without having to be notified by an email. Like getting notifications on the app is fine, but when I’m writing or looking over the writing as a ‘reader’, it’d be nice to see the comments on the side, where, and be able to read them and reply.
There’s also something with the text, or font, that every time I write quotes with quotation marks, the quotation marks are changed after the chapter is save, exited and then re-edited. So, like the quotation marks are the ‘fancy’ and more detailed ones, when writing, ya know, because of, and to fit the, font the writer chose to read their stories in—the ones that look like filled in 9’s and 6’s.
But after I’ve written, quoting the quotes, and exit the chapter, they change. Once I re-enter the chapter to add some new edits, new ideas, or reading it, etc, the quotation marks change to these kind of quotation marks {“”].
Also, I don't know if this is something you can fix, or just has something to do with the reader or not, but when I go to edit my stories, I look at the “read[er]” count, and they are all jumbled up. For example, if a chapter were to have 11 readers, the next chapter has 6 readers, and then the chapter after that suddenly has 21 readers!
Like, I don’t know what that’s supposed to mean for my writing. Are people accidentally missing chapters? Are they skipping chapters? Are they starting at a chapter other than the first? I don’t know.
Anyways, this review makes me seem pretty obnoxious or picky or something, I don’t know the right word, but I’ve had these things on my mind for a while and I never really thought of making a review, until now that is. So I’m sorry if it’s too much and too sudden, but please, maybe think about my thoughts and opinions, maybe compare them with what others think.
But thank you for the app, because if it weren’t made, or didn’t exist, I wouldn’t have, have, the inspiration to write, especially since I originally didn’t like writing or reading.
Going Downhill :(
I’ve used wattpad for about five or more years now and I can’t explain how much I’ve loved it. On the premise of the idea of the app and my enjoyment of the stories, I give it 5 stars. However, what used to be a happy and safe place for me has now gone downhill and I don’t even want to be on it anymore due to some of the changes. Like most people have said, I understand how a company needs to make money, but what I don’t understand is how the types of changes being made to try and swindle money from readers are necessary. The wattpad team do not write the stories for this app. Yes, the ability for writers to publish on here and for readers to read is thanks to the site and app created by the company, but I don’t see how there could be any reason to demand money now when nothing has changed. I understand if an author chooses to have a paid book or to have ads on their story, but nowadays there is an ad after every single chapter and every book (even fanfiction that don’t have many reads). Also, I am choosing to comment now because the most recent update with the limited number of offline books is absolutely outrageous to me. I’ve always loved how if I want to read something offline I can simply download to my library. I went in today to update thinking that the “new organisation features” for the library would be helpful to me, but instead have had something I love taken away from me and the only way I can get it back is to pay 5.99 a MONTH. That is way too much and although I do know people need to make money, I think the return benefit is low for the amount of money and I think this entire premium change has shown how the world is only ever about money. Wattpad used to be a place for people to express themselves and for people to lose themselves in their imaginations and feel happy. Now, it is just another money trap and privilege for those who already have the funds. I want the old Wattpad back and I think that if no changes are made to revert back to how it was before I will be very upset. This is ridiculous. As a reader and an author, I don’t even want to be on the app anymore. Please listen to the actual audience of the app and work for the benefit and happiness of those currently paying your bills through incessant advertisements and overpriced subscriptions. Sorry for the complaint, but I have had enough and want the wattpad I know and love to come back.
edit to add on:
I’ve just looked at what the most recent update says and it writes that there is a “new library management experience that lets you seamlessly add and remove stories for offline reading” — this makes us seem as if there is now the choice if you want to use storage to save and download a story to your phone and that you can easily find the ones that are. In no way does this let a reader know that there will now be a 2 story limit to reading offline. This feels like such a scam in wording and obviously traps readers into thinking this update benefits them. I am outraged at this. Also, it goes on to say how the home page is now more catered to the reader — I just checked my home page and the first column is “top paid stories”. It then goes on to have a section of stories picked for me. Every single one of those stories are paid for. I have never before read a paid for book on wattpad or even an original work (not fanfiction). This so obviously goes to show the current intentions of the app. Yes, this is a paid story section, but it is the most highlighted and first shown recommendations. If I want to see books actually suggested I have to scroll far down, and even then there tends to be paid stories placed first.

Aysia POV
I walked in my Apartment tired and all , I massaged my head and untied my ponytail letting my hair hang over my face . "Only 5 more months and I'm getting my degree".
I went in my room and ran a bubble bath. Then lit some candles and turned the lights off.
I hoped in and closed my eyes .
I heard my tv on maybe it was just my app alerting me.
"好吧,我会在那里".(okay I'll be there )
"But why would I be watching some Japanese show", I thought.
Grabbing my sliver silk robe I peeked through the hall way I was still dripping water from the bath.
Thank god it was just Angelo. He's my boyfriend we've been together since high school.
"Hey baby".
"You know you could've just knocked Ange ".
"Yeah I know I just really wanted to scare you".
"Ha ha very funny".
"So I was thinking since our anniversary is coming up , you know august 18th".
"Of course Angelo I wouldn't forget , but I do have class on the 18th"..
"Aysia its are anniversary"!
"I know but I could get my degree early if I worked hard enough ".
"I promise you, your so stubborn I mean what was the last time we had a date"?
He pulled me close.
"When was the last time we kissed baby".
He always had this charm that would make me give in but I have to save my virginity for marriage it was the christian way.
I sat on his lap changing the subject , "you know my bath water is cold now".
"Aysia I'll go rerun it then I'll put on a movie when you get out".
"Thank you baby". I cheesed and he replied , "Mhum".
I sat down on my leather barstool then I seen a shadow out side on my balcony.
I tried squinting my eyes so I could make out the figure it looked like a man but when I went over there it was just Angelo's grill .
"Hm that was weird".
"babe "!
"Yeah Sia "!
"When you came were your watching some Japanese program on TV"?
He came in the hallway.
"No Aysia , I watch bet , vh1 and basketball. "
"Oh okay I guess".
"Your probably just stressed just go lay down after your bath and I'll bring some soup okay"?
"I may be stressed , but I'm not crazy ".
I walked back in my bathroom then relaxed in my bath.
Shang POV
"That was close". Wait what am I talking about I'm shang li the worlds best capturer and son of the most wanted assassin.
Tomorrow I really gotta get ready to take this lady for my father I've been watching her for about a month learning on what she's like and rampaging through her mail.
She's the sister of Naomi who is the wife of Lemar Canon CEO of the mafia. And strangely No Mercy Corporations ( N.M.C. )had killed several of our members.
Anyways I've been on this balcony for hours its 8:00 right now I'm waiting for her and her boyfriend to go to sleep.
Normally she would scream at him or yell because he'd tried to sleep with her but I mean I don't blame him she's freaking sexy I would... Nvm I have a girl why am I lusting over some black girl.
My iPhone vibrated "Hello ".
"Sir , Brother we have to go tonight to the meeting".
"Yao you can just call me Shang ".
"We are brothers you know".
"Sorry shang I was trying to respect you".
"Yeah its okay".
"How's the mission "?
"I uh I've gotten somewhere".
"Mhm look she can't be that ugly to look at".
"Actually Yao shes better looking then her sister way better looking".
"Shang this is a mission just kidnap her tomorrow no feelings for the prey".
I hung up.
How could he think I had feelings for my- the prey .
Like no way I don't even know her , okay I do know her.
I guess you can know somebody without even talking to them .
I went to my car and pulled off.
Wattpad is my home
I've been on wattpad for almost 3 years now, and my little account is starting to get fairly popular. I love wattpad for many reasons, the first of which being the community. Within your first week of using wattpad, you will notice its vast arrangement of communities, these wattpad communities are so very different from one another, however the amazing part is how they come together because of people like you.
There are so many differences between these communities from size and shape to generally what holds them together, however there are also many similarities because some of the fact that they are full of so many amazing people that are very welcoming and very open-minded. These communities often times will contain friends (or more) that you will make on wattpad, that you otherwise, probably would have never met. You're so very friendly and very open-minded making the community what it is; a wonderful environment. The wattpad community is so amazing and welcoming that it never fails to make me feel at home. I love it so very much and I hope that you enjoy it too.
Another reason why I love it is the feedback that you get from your readers after you publish story. You can update and change the stories as much as you like, gain followers, "favorite" (or like) a story or even just a chapter that your really enjoyed (this will help the writer know that people like that chapter and that they are doing something right), comment on chapters, keep track of how many people are reading your stories, and talk to people through wattpad's direct messaging system.
The all-around niceness and feedback is what really makes wattpad what it truly is; home. I cannot stress this enough, honestly when I don't feel welcome anywhere else wattpad is where I turn. The open communities, the kind words from readers, and the occasional fan makes wattpad feels like home when nowhere else does. Wattpad is truly the only place where I can truly be myself without worrying about being judged or bullied.
Also something else that I love about wattpad is it's vast arrange of stories. From fanfics to original stories to original poems and more, though there is one thing that they all have in common, they were written by every day people which to me is probably the most amazing thing about wattpad. That it is made up of real, every day people who enjoy similar things you do, making the community even more like home.
Though there are select few on wattpad who are official wattpad authors. These authors started on wattpad, until they were either hired by wattpad to write stories and publish them on wattpad or they won a contest and they published their books and became official authors. Some of these authors are very famous now, and you probably would never expect that they got their start on wattpad. Making wattpad an even better place for possibility. Creating the magical place that is wattpad.
As I mentioned before, you can participate in and possibly win wattpad contests. Wattpad employees will post regular contests on their official "wattpad" account. These contests are official contests directly from the wattpad base, in Canada. This allows young authors to submit their stories into any amount of contests for the chance to publish their stories with one of wattpad's partnered publishing houses. The stories are manually read and handpicked by official wattpad employees and the heads of the publishing house. The winner of these contests, often times will create a contract with the publishing house and will become an official wattpad author.
I truly enjoy wattpad, and I hope that you do too. And when you join, which hope you do, feel free to follow me @Bat-Attack or Pheonix Slade, and I will help you get started. I'm so very confident that you will love what had just as much as I do.
Not really good
Just to set the stage, so to speak, I have an iPhone 6, so some of the issues I’ve been experiencing could be due in part to features my device lacks. Nevertheless, I am not impressed by this app in the slightest. For the most part, things work as they should, but when it glitches, it goes all out.
I’ll hit you with it straight off: the messages. I swear it’s like the app completely looks the other direction with messages. I’ll check my notifs, then click the DM tab and it’ll reload...and show exactly the same thing I saw before. Nothing new. So I assumed, in the beginning, that I had no messages. Not anymore. I know now that you can go for a week, checking EVERY DAY in hopes that someone sent something, and about when you’ve decided all your friends have abandoned you, it’ll show different words in the preview of the message. But will it notify you of this change? My god, no! That’d be too useful. Only after I answer the message that I saw just because I was really looking for it does a red dot appear. And then it won’t go away until I enter and exit the message multiple times.
It’s not just that, though. I said it’ll show different words, yeah? Well, it’ll show that on one or two messages, and the rest of them? Nah. How do I know there are more? I have to log into my email and consult a provider that’s actually capable of telling me the facts, and tell me it does.
This brings me to the next issue: the update. I think it’s part of the Wattpad upgrade that makes this happen, and in any case, I hate it with a passion. In my email, something I check once every thousand years or so, I just so happen to see that someone tagged me in a story or on their message board. Oh! So I check back through older emails, and guess what? It happens regularly. Does the app bother to mention this? Of course not. Too much work. The old Wattpad used to tell me every time this happened, which was lovely, and it even told me when someone tagged me in their profile. Maybe this was annoying for some, I dunno, but this only contributes to my irritation with the app.
Then there’s this thing it’s been doing that no one in the community has been able to explain to me: for no reason at all, my friends accounts will disappear. I mean, I click on their avatar in my messages and their account doesn’t exist. Wattpad tells me the page I wanted just isn’t there. So I wait, check again later. Nope, still not there. And I know these people wouldn’t leave without telling me or at least someone, so what’s up with that? One person changed her username and then the app could no longer tell me she existed, but the others? No. Later their accounts will become available again and they act as though they don’t know anything happened.
Other minor issues that may be easily explained and/or incapable of being fixed:
I can’t type my bio in a different font without the word count complaining that I’ve gone over, when all I’ve done is replace the old text with new...in a different font.
Books I read when I first got Wattpad (about four years ago) no longer have my vote on them, in other words, I know for a fact I voted on them way back when and now the vote isn’t there anymore.
In other words, the app isn’t that good. The online version is much more reliable and you can skip the ads too, if you do so desire (even though some of them support the authors...might not wanna skip them all the time). I’m using the app because my phone reloads my web browser a lot and I don’t want to find myself logging back in to my account every five minutes, but other than that I’d absolutely stick to the website. And I wish we had the option to use the old Wattpad or something because so much about it was better than now. Never miss what you have until it’s gone? Yeah. That.
Anyway, I’ve never made my own app and I don’t know how difficult it is to keep up this sort of thing, so I can’t exactly be openly and unreasonably angry about all this. There are probably a lot of more serious problems going on with it, but still. Y’all. Please send help.
Always Room for Improvement
For what this app tries to be, it succeeds in every aspect. I'm mainly writing this review in hopes of a developer hearing out some of the majority's requests for improvement.
1) Less genres. More sub genres. The current genres seem to conflict with each other. For example, "Vampire" and "Werewolf" are supposed to be sub genres of the "Fantasy" genre, however they are listed as genres of their own. It would be nice to install sub genres as a way to organize and refine stories so readers don't have to drudge through hundreds of stories in a single vague genre such as "Adventure" (little to none of the stories involve adventure, they're all soap operas behind princesses and super heroes at this point.) As a side note, fan fiction shouldn't be a genre either. You guys should install a fan fiction filter, such as the mature filter, that people can select when creating their stories, then allow them to select a regular genre such as "Romance" or "Fantasy" so people can sort through original stories and fan fictions.
2) Feature stories each week! I'm not talking about the preexisting feature tab, I'm talking about a little notification that pops up when you open Wattpad that says "Hey! You should check out these cool uprising stories! (About five or ten stories listed below with their cover and summary)" It's a little boost that helps aspiring writers get the recognition they need, as well as incentive that motivates them to write more. While the feature tab is cool and all, not many people bother to check it, especially on the website given how it's hidden entirely unless you click on the minuscule tab at the top. Plenty of successful webcomic hosting sites do this, and it benefits them and their creators greatly. For greater incentive, you could add a side note at the bottom of the pop up that says something along the lines of: "Next week's featured stories: the best superhero stories!"
3) Reward constant updates, punish lack of updates. As others have said before me, a book that has not been updated in 60 days or so should not be recommended to others and should be removed from the hotlist. It's a shame when you stumble across a book, add it to your library, and wait another five years for it to be updated. While the hotlist is a good way to reward constant updates, something like the suggestion above where you feature stories should also have the updating factor. For example, one of the challenges to be featured that week would be to update your story on specific days of the week.
4) Install an auto correct gadget. Similar to Microsoft Word's autocorrect, when someone types something, it should automatically correct the spelling errors and underline grammar mistakes. Wattpad is swamped by stories filled with 10 year old's poor spelling and grammar; the least you could do is install a gadget that helps their writing. This can be turned on automatically by default, however it can be turned off in settings or a button in the menu bar on the writing page.
5) Add ratings for stories. I mean this both ways-- add the ability to rate a story with one to five stars and the ability to rate a story G, PG, PG-13, etc. In the creation studio, allow the writer to choose a viewer rating for their story. This will give parents more control over what their kids read by banning certain ratings. By default, Wattpad should allow anything below M (anything higher would be grouped in the mature category which is already turned off), however this can be changed in settings. Viewers who have completed the story should be given a mandatory pop up that doesn't close until they rate the story one to five stars and if the story was rated correctly or not (however this only occurs on stories that have been marked "Complete". Work-in-progress stories can offer viewers to rate and/or report the story optionally at the bottom of each chapter.) If a story is reported as being incorrectly rated a number of times, the Wattpad staff would have to review it.
That's about it for now. I hope you take these points into consideration at the very least.
2017
It's 2017 people, turn your phone on airplane mode to turn off all ads.
Awesome app!

Wattpad’s changes caused it to lose at its luster
Wattpad’s changes caused it to lose at its luster.
About 3 or so years ago I sent a review with 5 stars, which I could add more with this
”
“Majestic fantastic absolutely good awesomeness marvelous out of this world app”
”Basically what the title says ⬆️.”
”
Yet, now I’ve had to come to the realization that after 5 years of Wattpad as a comfort, I’m thinking of getting rid of it completely.
I would always delete apps for extra space, but never once did I contemplate Wattpad. I would go to places without service and be completely fine since I had access to books without having to worry about making sure they were downloaded or not.
Now? I have to have an option of 3 books download or pay money? I disliked the app symbol change at the beginning, but ‘whatever, lots of companies do it’. Then the coins. Sure I understand. I would like to support others, but I’m trying to get to college here. I came here to not worry about that stuff. There isn’t any that you can pay to not wait! Here’s what I’m thinking:
My best friend should me this app 5 years ago. The app he used to write stories down to finally get more people to read it, other than us of course. 7th grade after working on assignments, he’ll show me the comments people have, the likes he gets, the followers that he adored. He got my dyslexic, story-loving, ADHD self to write here.
Awful? Yes. Uncompleted? Definitely.
we would write comments to each other’s poem and stories(he’s much better than mine, I was more social). I even made a friend in another country from those comments, we still talk today! We both had a poem dedicated to us. He had to delete his stories because of his parent's rules within a year( I still had more followers in the end than he did much to his annoyance).
I still used the app for so much more. I read stories that opened my mind to more possibilities. I read books that made me sit and ponder. I had books made me why I was reading it. I had books that I never wanted to end. This app help built me to who I am today. This app help me when that friend from before committed suicide.
This is all I have left of him. I have memories and discussions here that can never be replaced. This app help with my grief. It helps me when I was nervous or having panic attacks or when I could barely continue on. And yet I stay. I fought hard to continue with life. When I fell I come here.
This has been true all the way up today. I can rant and let things off my chest that I would never be able to tell people in real life. People here care for one another, it’s like an extended family. People help one another, willing to help others so that they don’t suffer alone. That’s the only reason I can’t bring this score any lower. It’s not the people of the community’s fault. It the fault of the additions and taking the spirit of the site away.
I was fine with the ads. It was just 15s, or 20s when the dang thing wouldn’t load. Periodically after wait for it to be over, it’ll take me back to the chapter I just read instead of the next chapter.
The app would freeze and I had to refresh it about 10 times. The new design I hated and just avoid looking at it.
The new layout almost made me feel like I was on a completely different site. It’s awfully designed to be compatible with iPhones and iPods. The new layout made it harder to find stuff.
No other reading/writing books have the book-covers with that obnoxious humongous size. But I stayed because I’ve been using this for 5 years and prefer it to other apps, yet here we are.
This paying to do things that don’t require money on other apps brought about wattpad lose its uniqueness. By this faulty new format/design is awful compared to others. Take a look at other apps and see what works and doesn’t.
Coins? Perfectly okay with.
Ads? Inconvenience, but understandable and livable.
Design? It matches Radish and Inkitts. It is more faulty generic rather than unique. At at least I can spell RIW or RIW. Don’t know what that is but cool with me.
Format? Looks like it’s more design to be computer and tablets compatible rather than mobile compatible. You took a step backward rather than a step forward.
The download thing? Doesn’t freakin’ work. That’s the last straw. I can’t even read the nondownload books even connect to the dang WiFi! The poor decision, programming, and planning have made this app more infuriating than necessary. I hope no other apps take these awful ideas and designs as the way to go.
I truly hope you can fit the app better to be more phone compatible Please, I don’t hate the coins, just don’t force us to pay to ‘download’ books. Or to pay to read books that aren’t stated to be paid. Take some time to rethink this, please. I understand that company’s and business try to make stuff different and new to stand out, but this ain’t it hun. This ain’t the way to get more money through the app. If all else possible get people to test it out or maybe ask users this [protected]@m: the question of what they think. I could help y’all out to make it better if that’s what it takes.
But don’t make me lose this place to go to or make me part with memories that can never be replaced.
This would’ve been a zero star if it weren’t for the community and those personal attachments. Thank you for your time.
I Love The Concept, But.That
Okay, so here's the deal. I like this concept. I really do. Wattpad has this nice logo going on. They have their Wattys, they have their genres all laid out, they have their featured works...but this all needs a little more touching up.
Here's my main objection, and it doesn't have anything to do with the website and it's developers themselves--okay, maybe it has like a little nugget of blame hidden deep deep deeeep down in the sand on a deserted island no one knows the name to or bothers to visit anymore, but hey, maybe I'm just on the wrong side of the net.♀️ It could happen.
I came to Wattpad to get feedback. Tons of feedback. Literally, that's the only reason I'm here. I write roleplays on g+ communities and to my own collections a lot. Sometimes I even share those with my friends, but those websites only have a platform that makes it comfortable to write one or two pages at a time before worrying about clicking outside the window and losing your work. I came to Wattpad because it looked promising. It's a community full of authors and readers. Just..that! That's amazing! I was so excited! I could write pages upon pages, as much as I want, and writers and I could highlight particular sections of our works and feedback one another as much as we dared! Ta-da!...Aaaand there comes the problem. Don't take this to heart, guys. I know I'm judging the ocean by a puddle, but this is from what I've seen these past few months: writers on Wattpad treat critique like venom. I understand that! Unwarranted pokes and prods can come off as offensive. You never know what another person intended their words to mean over the net. But I can't even point out a typo without being confronted. A typo! And I see this happening all the time to a number of different people! Like any part of the internet, I decided I just needed to find my own comfort zone, a place to call home. I wanted to critique. I wanted to be critiqued. I edited my story covers and my descriptions to be something that would draw myself in, as much as I possibly could without betraying the contents of the story itself. Club regulations are so strict. It's hard to get in touch with other authors you don't already know. I cannot find other authors who are here for the same reason as me. When I asked for critique on my profile one day, I soon changed it in fear that those words would actually scare readers off.
Okay, enough with the downs. Do I have any suggestions? Yes. I have many suggestions, bwahaha~~~
2.5 LONG REVIEW BUT WORTH IT!
I love the app don’t get me wrong but lately the app has been crashing terribly.
TECHNICAL DIFFICULTIES:
I have two accounts (one is strictly for books I write and the other is personal) so when I logged out to log into the second account it said in order to get into my account I had to change my password. I never requested to change my password ever. I use the same one for literally everything but because I didn’t use that particular account as much it wasn’t that big of a deal to me. I changed the password through the linked email they had sent and logged in... everything was fine.
When I was done I went to log back into the other account and it literally told me the same thing! Because I use the same password for everything I had to make a separate password for this account and it took me ages to remember it by heart so I 100% DID NOT want to change my password. I tried everything to login through the same user and pw but it wouldn’t let me. I tried deleting the app and reinstalling it and even restarting my phone but the same message would pop up. After some time I finally gave in but this time the app was having “technical difficulties” and wouldn’t send the emailed link through. It was infuriating. After hours of waiting and using customer support (Who were so patient and helpful) I was finally able to reset my password and login but now I’m scared to log back out...
MONEY HUNGRY - 3 Main Issues:
1.) ADS-
The other issue I have with wattpad is how money hungry their app seems now. I remember using the app before they even had ads on it (or maybe they played them so rarely I just can’t remember) and I’ve been a loyal user through all the updates as the apps evolved over the last couple years and man can I say... now it seems like every five seconds they’re asking you to pay for something on top of all of the ads. The ads are in between nearly every chapter and it can get annoying when people only post 4 page long chapters because you end up getting them more frequently. Let’s not forget to mention it seems like they choose to only play the same ad for the entire day so as someone who uses the app for long periods of hours seeing the same minute long ad between long or short chapters get annoying quick...
2.) Wattpad Coins-
Now as for what I came to do this review for in the first place... wattpad of course is an app where you can read books as well as write books. Well, some books cost “coins” virtual wattpad coins. To see that some of the books that used to be free (some I’ve even read before they became paid stories) now cost money is crazy but that’s not what bothers me. It’s that the coins are so expensive! For .99 cents you get 9 coins (+6 extra if you have premium) yet when you go to read a chapter and finally get past the preview part they tell you
“in order to finish this book pay with coins or try premium”
Of course you’re probably thinking... what’s the issue? You have coins... the issue is that to unlock 1 chapter it costs 4 coins (some books vary but it’s alway 3 or more) the fact that you payed a dollar to read three chapters out of an ENTIRE BOOK is INSANE! Let’s keep in mind for some odd freaking reason... every chapter cost a different amount? So in one chapter they’d ask for 4 coins and in the next they’d ask for 6 in order to continue. So spending a dollar yet never really knowing what you’re getting out of it boggles my brain... that’s not even it though because on top of all of that...
They had the GULL to do this...
“PREMIUM”-
They had the gull to ask for 10 dollars a month for a premium the LITERALLY GIVES THE BARE MINIMUM IN RETURN!
“Premium” Offers:
-No Ads. Period.
-Unlimited Offline stories
-Your Wattpad Coins Go Further
-Exclusive Theme Colors
-Unlock any 2 paid stories per month
Looks like a great bargain, huh? NOPE! Here’s why...
No Ads - That’s gonna be your obvious attention grabber. Nothing special here.
Unlimited Offline Stories - First off that feature used to be free but after seeing so many people love that they took it away and limited the offline quantity to 2 book at a time in order to draw more people towards going ahead and getting premium. Fine whatever, but 9/10 times people are reading wattpad online anyways and if they aren’t they won’t need more than the two offline slots available anyways.
Exclusive Theme Colors - When opening the app you get your basic layout with the original black, grey, and orange color scheme. The locked color theme options are a muddy green, grayish/brown, pale red, a blue with a hint of barely noticeable green, a sea green but more on the green side, a teal like shade, black, a more vibrant orange, a pale purple with a brownish undertone, a crayn blue shade, and a navy blue mixed with grey... so as you could probably guess they aren’t even appealing shades and it’s not even like they give you this big color wheel to choose from. (I swear I’m not being over dramatic. Like. I wish I was exaggerating the truth.)
Point is there’s no bang for your buck heck not even a tap for a cent...
You’re Wattpad Coins Go Further - First of all this ties into the last “feature”. Your coins should be unlimited...like 6 coins extra? Seriously? 10 bucks A MONTH for six coins extra? Also if I’m paying $10 a month the fact that you expect me to put down more of my money on top of that for paid stories that should automatically unlock at my monthly purchase is ridiculous!
Unlock Any 2 Paid Stories Per Month - 2 Stories only? 10 DOLLARS A MONTH should make the app got back to the way it use to be. Ad Free, Unlimited Offline Stories, And Free Books ALL THE WAY AROUND meaning the app should allow me to read as much or as little as I want. You’re asking for $120 every year and you’re telling me I can’t read more than two paid stories a month?
OVERALL: I really love wattpad and the fact that I begin to dislike the app more and more every time I use it makes me sad...
Wattpad - Read & Write Stories Complaints 18
What’s wrong with this app now?
I love Wattpad and all of my followers. When I log in to my other account, I do my description and stuff, then all of a sudden it says either ‘User not log in’ even though I am logged in or something like ‘The server isn’t working. Please log in again’ over and over again. So, I log back in then all of my stuff has like question marks with that letter ‘a’ in a box, basically all of my emojis are gone. Sometimes I click ‘save’ then it pops up the error, log back in, and then all of my stuff is deleted.
My second problem is that when I go other account and go to read my original account description, the description doesn’t pop up, all it shows is the location I put down.
Wattpad, I love you but, I wish you didn’t, technically, update it. I wish we could have the last update instead of this one...it’s starting to get a bit annoying now

new update???
ok I want to say I’ve loved this app for years and I’ve even written a few of my own books. My favorite feature was that it was free! I never minded watching a few ads to support this app and it’s writers, but this coin system isn’t working. I feel that there could be a better system for this. One of the books I started reading let me read 3 chapters, and then the rest were locked. If I wanted to read the rest of the story, I needed 9,999 coins to finish it. NO ONE has that kind of money to spend on one book if 3 coins are $0.99. Maybe Wattpad can do something else, like a log in reward and you get a few coins for the day, and if you watch an add you get 3 coins. I, and many other broke teenagers, really don’t want to pay $0.99 for one single chapter. Please please pleaseeee fix this so many readers can get back to reading quality books :)

Coins:(
I have loved Wattpad for years, but I hate the coins. This platform was supposed to be a FREE and easy way to share your writing and enjoy others’ work. I understand that this is to help pay others for their work, but I think the coins is not the way to do it. Now just because people don’t want to/ can’t pay the ridiculous price to read their story, people just are not going to read it, which is a shame. I think that the use of ads to pay the authors was a good idea, and I read someone else write about a way to pay authors as patron. Readers could have the opportunity to donate to their favorite authors. I liked that this app was free, that is what sets it apart from iBooks, or just buying your own books, but now it is just another “free” app on the App Store that the minute you open it, you must pay to use it. Very disappointed with the new update.:(

Coins? Ads? Offline stories?
I loved Wattpad but seeing the coin system (something many comic apps are adapting) is getting very annoying. Wattpad already has it’s annoying ads in between reading the chapters but NOW it has ads and coins. It’s a poor choice and it’s sad to see. If this continues I’ll delete the app. I remember when Wattpad was an ad free place and everything was free and there was no premium subscriptions. I miss that, it made the app more genuine. On top of that, the offline stories is a rip off. This makes it 10x harder to read stories. I loved Wattpad because I could read it anywhere with or without WiFi. I suggest people who like to read and write to go to Archive of Our Own because this is a disgrace to writers/readers who’ve been here since the beginning. Wattpad is destroying what readers loved about the app one by one. It’s the equivalent of Netflix having ads.

What The Heck
i have been on wattpad for several years now but now i think they’ve crossed the line. this update is absolutely ridiculous. i am still very young and do not even have a job! i do not earn money on a daily basis to be able to freaking PAY TO READ the books in my library. reading has been my escape for as long as i can remember and now i can’t even do that! one thing i suggest is that wattpad makes those prices of the stupid coins cheaper or let us get more than nine coins for a dollar. to unlock one freaking chapter costs three! that’s ridiculous! i read on wattpad for several hours everyday. i am not going to read the first couple chapters of any book and then be forced to pay to read the rest. i also am a fellow writer on wattpad and i do understand that it is supporting writers to continue writing because they are getting paid, but please just make the amount of coins you get increase and for a cheaper price.

Frustrating
I have been signed up on Wattpad for 5 YEARS! That’s a long time. I’ve pretty much seen all the many stages of wattpad, heck I had a Beta version back before I even had an account. That being said this app is getting awful. Just recently they have where you have to buy coins to finish a book. Seriously!? I use this app because I want to read a lot of people’s works and not pay for it. If I wanted to buy a book I’d go to Kindle or another App Store. Disappointed it’s all about money with them now. However, the books and authors are amazing and the suggestions tab is linked to me perfectly for what I like to read. BUT, and I seriously mean BUT, for the past 8 months I haven’t been able to find books I like because wattpad keeps suggesting the SAME 7 books to me over and over.
Update: Also, has anyone noticed that they only comment on things about formatting or font size? NOTHING about glitches or bugs. Very annoyed.

Disappointed in the app issues
I’ve read on Wattpad for about 10 years now. In the last 2 years or so I have noticed some irritating issues with the app. First I should mention that I paid for the premium but I ended up canceling recently. The reason why is simple. The app kept crashing. I kept getting logged out. Even now, every time I open the app it says I need to log in about 5 different times before it finally lets me into my library. I’ll already have been logged in and it will still do it. It says I need to re-connect to Facebook and once I press “cancel”, it’ll pop up again 2 more times. Then it will say I need to log into Wattpad. I press “cancel” again 2 more times and it finally lets me in. I’ve tried deleting and re-downloading and it still does it. The ad’s never bothered me much because I understand that writers deserve something for their amazing works. Unfortunately seems like ever since they were added, the issues with the app are insane. As a paying customer, I shouldn’t have these kinds of issues. No one should.

The Big Change
I’ve always loved Wattpad, I’ve been using it since 2011 and I’ve always been a fan of the idea they were basing it all on, writers being able to spread their work for everyone to read and to gain some exposure and experience without having to be published, because getting published isn’t the easiest thing to do. But recently they updated their app, which locks books, forcing you to unlock chapters using these Wattpad coins and the only way to get these coins is by spending money. This turned me off of Wattpad and I’m no longer reading the books and supporting the reader. I’m sure I’m not the only one that’s not willing to spend money on coins to unlock chapters. I’m a supporter of rising authors, and I think previous Wattpad was amazing and I would give it 5 stars, but unfortunately the whole dynamic of Wattpad has changed. I’m not longer able to share the books with my friends and read them for myself. Instead I have to spend a dollar per 3 chapters. It’s ridiculous and I’m sorry to say but I will rarely be using Wattpad now because it feels like a gimmick.

Coins
I’ve been with this app for over a year and I love it but I hate this coins thing. I’m only 14, I’m not old enough to get a job, I don’t have money to spend on coins! I get that this is a way to support the authors but why not just do patrions? People will willingly support their favorite authors and pay a certain amount of money every month to the author to show their support. It’s what Webtoon does and it’s a good idea! Because it doesn’t force readers to pay to read but lets them to support in a different way. I think taking down this coins update and adding a new update to become a patrion to your favorite authors would be better. I hope you take my idea into consideration because me and a lot of other readers don’t have money just laying around. I understand you want the authors that are taking their time to write amazing stories to get credit for their work using the coins system but in my opinion it’s not the best system. I think adding the option to become a patrion instead of paying for coins is a better option in my opinion. Once again, I hope you take this idea into consideration.

Just nope
Ok, why- why are you changing EVERYTHING?
This premium stuff is insane, I’ve had Wattpad for a long time but this premium stuff is getting out of hand.
Oh, don’t let me forget about the new update.
When I update on my “conversations”, I can barley see the text! It’s light grey and not it’s original black color!
And in messages, when someone chats with you, it’s the same thing! I have to squint my poor colorblinded eyes.
This was a fun app, everything about was fun but now it’s just getting worse.
It’s insane! When new parts of the story come out, it’s no longer it’s original blue color, now it’s some orange brown, looks like the parts where I’ve read the book! Stop making the colors so close that nobody can’t see it!
And why is it a problem that I can’t read my books offline anymore? I’d like the read original books at the beach without buying them :|
And the coin thing, what’s with the coin thing? “To help people”, it’s not going to actually give them REAL money to continue at their book. The coin thing makes no sense, paying money to get fake money.
Just wish it was better instead of turning upside down :’(

even worse than before
i love wattpad, that’s undeniable. I enjoy both reading and writing, so this app is a great outlet for me to relax with. unfortunately, since the past few updates, the MANY glitches of the app seem to have worsened; this last update is no exception.
since the update, i have been unable to open any of the books i have written on my phone, whether it be to preview it or to just edit it. it’s so annoying.
to go on, what’s with all the ads? like what the hell? when i first started using wattpad, there were definitely not as many advertisements as there were now. even more so, the ads are often delayed, making it even harder and the wait even longer for me to be able to continue the stories i’m currently into.
and while i’m mentioning delay, i just have to complain about the notifications. i will sometimes receive notifications about pm’s or comments on my story as much as an hour late than they occurred. this has been a problem for MONTHS on this app, and wattpad still has not fixed it.
unless these problems are fixed quick, i will not hesitate to delete my account and use a better program to entertain myself and my readers.
sorry not sorry, wattpad.

Now we have to pay?
I’m thoroughly disappointed, Wattpad. Since when did this app turn into something you had to pay for? These aren’t published books, most people do not have editors, and we have to pay for coins and purchase by chapter? Newsflash: these are not professional authors! While I 100% agree that some of these authors do deserve some form of payment it is so easily done with ads. Give us ads between chapters, don’t make everyone pay for unprofessional, unpublished works. I’ve been using this app for years, writing and reading my fair share; so when I logged on today and began a story only to find out I had to pay to finish it—I was, to say the least, confused. Bring back the old Wattpad where we were all free to read and write without having to pay to do so. Bring back the ads and get rid of these ridiculous coins. Many sites and apps like YouTube with millions of creators pay them using primarily ad revenue so this system would obviously work for Wattpad. Think of all the loyal authors and readers on your platform. Many of whom can’t afford to spend money to pay for these books (since that’s the entire point of Wattpad in the first place; free literature/entertainment).

Coins
I truly enjoy the concept of wattpad- it’s my favorite app so far in regards to writing for fun and I think it’s a great way for authors to get their work noticed! I’m obviously a big reader, and I’d possibly chose wattpad over my library apps Bc of the interaction. I enjoy being able to express my thoughts to authors and read what others have thought about certain scenes and characters. When the ads came out supporting authors, I loved it! They spend so much time and energy and I love that now select authors can be rewarded for their efforts. I have bought several books after being recognized through wattpad and published. However, I see zero point in paying for an entire book, much less simply chapters at a time, without any promise that the book will never be removed or taken down. If I pay for something, I’d like to ensure that should it be taken from me I get my money back. Which is why if I had the money to pay $1 per update on a book I still would never. Make it an option to pay the author through a safe and WILLING channel, without using it as bribery toward the reading. This is not an original idea, specifically two other free reading apps are set up to pay indirectly per reading. Those do not have nearly as many active accounts as Wattpad does. This is not a coincidence. I would and have willingly paid a small contribution to authors through their personal arrangements off wattpad, and I support a non-demanding program using suggested coin amounts, while still MAKING THE BOOKS AVAILABLE TO ALL READERS FOR FREE.

I love Wattpad but
So I’ve been a member of wattpad since 2013 and I’ve absolutely loved it I’ve read so many stories over the years and have even been encouraged to write a few of my own. But now with this new program and such I have to pay good hard earned money that I don’t always have to read stories. I feel that although it’s great your trying to encourage future authors and let them know that what their doing is paying off it’s not easy or accessible to people who were looking to download the app, maybe make some friends, and read about what they love when they can only read three chapters because the rest is locked. What if other people don’t have money and the whole reason they downloaded this app was because they couldn’t afford to buy books and couldn’t get out to a real library. I understand that this might never end and the program will continue so if it does then I feel like Wattpad should make easier less expensive ways to earn coins like watching videos to earn them, or little mini games or something, and if you want people to pay for coins then make them more worth buying like either add more coins or lower prices a bit. I feel like me trying to read and enjoy the material on this app is completely lost and that’s what the app was originally made to do and I now feel that I’m being ripped off. I understand not many others might feel this way but something about this needs to change because me not being able to read content that I love is upsetting and it makes me mad and some people might feel the same way and might consider deleting the app.

Pay Attention to the Reviews
This app was one of my favorite apps! I’ve been on wattpad for like about 1-2 years now. I joined new fandoms and talked to creative people. But now, I can’t even access my own books just to reply to someone’s comment. And all I see is “Premium this.” And “Premium that.” So I don’t have the money to pay $60 a year just so the bugs can be fixed.
What I also have been noticing is that you aren’t actually fixing the app itself. There are so many crashes and bugs, but nothing changed over the pass week with these. You shouldn’t be focusing on the premium which most people can’t afford, but at least try to make the app better. Bc I have a lot of comments that can help my stories, but I can’t access them due to the update. All I want is that you stop paying attention to the small part of the community and focus on the rest because you are treating others like they don’t deserve at least a good quality of an app.
May I also add, I have to go online just to reply to the comments on my story or actually reread my story. And all I could say is that the creators aren’t paying attention to these reviews because I bet you have gotten a lot of emails complaining like me, and you aren’t doing a thing.
Wattpad is like a community. You guys are the branch of the government while the readers and writers are citizens. If you aren’t listening to the complaints, the wattpad community will be horrible and more people will delete than download. What I’m asking is that you fix this because it’s unfair to the people lesser than premium.
Update August 3,2018:
I still can’t access my own stories even with the new update. EXPLAIN
Edit Aug.6.2018:
Wattpad has been failing to load A LOT lately. Focus on your app and not on the premium PLEASE

A few problems
I love Wattpad! It's an amazing app, and has a very welcoming community for aspiring writers. I love mostly everything about it! Except, I've noticed a few problems that need attention. Firstly, the app isn't letting me follow people anymore. I'm only following around 200 people, and since then it hasn't let me follow anybody else. After I follow somebody, when I reopen the app it's said I hadn't followed them in the first place. I asked the people I attempted to follow about it, and they said they hadn't even gotten a notification that I'd followed them. Another problem I've noticed is that the private messages are rather--in lack of a better word--glitchy. It takes many attempts at refreshing the messages before any of them come through. Also, a message appears that says an error had occurred, when it is still continuing to load. The last request is that maybe if the messaging glitch is fixed, perhaps you could add an option for group messaging? It would be a great way for groups of writers to chat and discuss each other's ideas if writing a group story, or just to have a chat.
Another issue that’s started recently is that is a reader comments on one of my stories and I try to read the comment, it doesn’t load. If I click view as reader on one of my own stories, it doesn’t work at all, of it taken over five minutes to load. Please fix this!
Additionally, I HATE THE MESSAGE BOARD UPDATE. Nothing is more frustrating than seeing I have 20 notifications only to see that they’re all notifications from people commenting on their message board. It’s annoying.
Also, comments on stories are weird now? When a reader comments on my story it doesn’t show up on that paragraph they commented on, it only shows up at the end of the chapter and I can’t tell where they commented.
I love the app! It's my absolute favorite! I hope these things are fixed to make it even more amazing! ❤

Disappointed
I don’t know if I’d consider myself a long-term supporter of Wattpad or not, but I’ve been on the app since 2013, six years ago when I fell in love with this amazing free app/website that not only lets you read stories but also publish them. I can’t speak for other authors, but personally, publishing stories on Wattpad has been about getting my work seen and distributed, not about getting payed for it. I was quite disappointed with the new update that changed this and now requires readers to buy coins and use them to read the more popular stories on the site. When did Wattpad change their views? Advertisements were enough, understandably, a large corporation such as this can’t continue to grow without some sort of revenue. Yet I can’t understand why they have changed the basis of Wattpad’s purpose, at least what I believed its purpose was; and that’s to circulate and promote new and upcoming authors so that they could find a publisher, not become the funder of professionally unedited works. I’ve seen a lot of changes happen to Wattpad over the years, one of which was the creation of Radish specifically for this purpose; authors who wanted to receive payment for works posted their stories there for fans to pay and read. I read a couple of reviews that were previously posted and have to agree on one thing stated, the majority of Wattpad’s audience are young readers who either can’t pay or are having their parents pay for them. Not only this, but the cost of coins is exorbitant and paying $8 to finish a book that, like I mentioned earlier, isn’t even published, is ridiculous. Now, not only am I waiting for advertisements between chapters (bearable) but I’m also paying to reread my favorite stories. I guess it was bound to happen but I’m still disappointed in Wattpad because the support I like best for my unedited, unpublished stories and from my readers isn’t payed for, it’s free to enjoy and critique so I can improve my writing.

I am so disappointed in the the creators
I’ve been on Wattpad since I was in the seventh grade, which was about 6 almost 7 years now. I’ve gone through years of updates and after awhile they have seemed to get worse and worse. You want the readers to support the authors and we do by voting on the story, leaving comments, and buying the books we love when our favorite authors get the chance of a lifetime to be published.
This new update is really it though Wattpad, you finally did it! You have finally managed to make the most dedicated readers such as myself change their review and possibly leave the app forever. So congratulations on that one I applaud you, I really do!
The fact is, it’s so hard to find books on this app anymore that I want to read and have proper grammar, spelling, and are actually interesting. This is because when I push on I don’t know let’s say a vampire option, and a list of things like rapmonster, thevampirediaries, possessive, dragon, and countless other irrelevant options pop up. And once I finally choose which stupid ‘filter’ I want to look through today I get everything but what I’m looking for. By the way to those who have decided to read my long overdue rant, those are actual filters.
Another really fun option you guys added (this is sarcasm for those who can’t tell) is the message board notification center. I don’t care if someone commented on a comment I made from two months ago let alone two years. I don’t care about what people post on their walls and what other people like or anything of that nature. So that’s another feature you guys can take away when people finally get fed up with every unwelcome thing you have added and people decide they don’t want this app anymore.
Now let’s get to the real kicker yeah? The part where people have to pay money to buy imaginary coins to give to authors so that they can read an update. As hard as it is to find a good story with quality writing now on Wattpad, I have to pay for it too. You realize that the majority of the people that are on this app are either young teens that don’t have jobs yet and actually want to read. Or college students that love to write and read but can’t really afford to be spending money on something like this. There is also the fact that between every two chapters you have to watch and advertise about annoying games, some product that no one wants, or a movie, and the only way to not get those ads is to pay money to be a premium member. Which is $5.99 a month or $59.99 yearly. This is ridiculous.
